A Nigerian politician has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling cocaine at Lagos airport.

Nigerian drug enforcement officials say Eme Zuru Ayortor swallowed nearly two kilograms of cocaine (4.4 lbs) in order to fund his election campaign.

Police say body scanners revealed the contents of his stomach as he attempted to board a flight to Frankfurt.

Mr Ayortor, aged 52, is running in the election to the local House of Assembly in Edo state.

Officers from Nigeria's drug law enforcement agency say they recovered 100 parcels of cocaine from the politician's stomach at Lagos' Murtala Mohammed International Airport.

It is understood that Mr Ayortor told officers he needed the money - because his last election campaign, in 2007, bankrupted him.

He was arrested two weeks ago - police are now at the end of their investigation.

They believe Mr Ayortor is part of a wider network.

"The quantity of cocaine we recovered is large," one officer told the BBC. "We believe it may not be his first attempt to smuggle drugs."

Mr Ayortor, a qualified pharmacist, studied at the University of Wisconsin in the US.

Politicians in Nigeria raise large amounts of money at election time: much of it goes on bribing election officials and paying gangs of young men to intimidate voters.

Last month, customs officers at the same airport seized a consignment of military uniforms which they linked to politicians preparing for elections next year.

Nigeria is a major transit route for drugs - from South America and Asia - to the US and Europe. More than 300 tonnes of narcotics were seized in the country last year.

Drugs law enforcement officers in Lagos have only four police sniffer dogs to monitor the airports, land borders and a massive seaport. They privately complain they need many more sniffer dogs to do their work properly.

Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua is dead, a presidential aide has confirmed to the BBC.

A spokesman, who did not want to be named, said Mr Yar'Adua died on Wednesday, although there's been no official announcement yet.

Mr Yar'Adua, who became president in 2007, had been ill for some time, and had not been seen in public for months.

After much wrangling, Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan was accepted as acting president in February.

I am very familiar with this kind of stories, alot of this happens in the UK. My elder sister's case was exactly like this one but my aunt was the one in question.

The normal excuse such people give is that I paid for your fare to the UK and brought you up blah blah. This is emotional blackmail, this individuals are master manipulators, domineering, self centered lazy people who want to use other people to satisy their whims and caprices. Her mother may plead with her to make contributions to the home but she shouldnt outrightly take everything from her, Girls of her age are married with kids and so she she ought to see herself as an adult and independent. Imagine her mother telling her that she wants to finish her house in Nigeria obviously her salary if for the mother to complete her house in Nigeria not for the girls upkeep.

Your GF is obviously scared to death of her mother and that is the grip the mother has over her, Her mother is very domineering. if she doesnt want to end up depressed, bitter and frustrated, she had better leave the mother fast, whatever inconviniences she would suffer in trying to adjust to a new life on her own is nothing compared to the number of years she has being enduring this.

Tell your GF to be very bold and not allow her mother to dominate or manipulate her into being a slave. She is taking her on a guilt trip to manipulate her into be enslaved. If the mother truly loves her she would always consider that those who work so hard deserves to be paid adequately. The mother should be grateful that she has a dutiful daughter. my sister had to escape from my aunt in the end. Poster i find this story very hard to believe, her/your account has far too many holes in it. One one hand i believe it is possible for someone to bring their ward/child in illegally and subject them to abuse similar to what your friend's but hey not in this instance.
It is possible the girl  came into the country illegally and is using someone else's NI at work while pursuing her education. In all this she hasnt told you how her tuition is being paid or if the mum is planning to change her visa status to give her more prospects once her education is over; so personally I wont be hasty to judge the mum until i have the full facts

If u need proof i can give u her phone number and u talk to her urself or i give u her address and go see her mom !

i do no something similar can happen but this in particular is bs-- its common for people to bring younger people from home and use them, they give them visa and papers and colect thier salary at the end--in a situation whereby the person has alot of fear or out of respect or maybe trying not to be ingrateful-- the person should just make an arrangement i.e

if the mom is trying to use her because she looked after her when she was young (like a mother is supposed to) let her calculate how much the school fees and ticket price and wot not were and let her pay the mom back in instalments, herself! when she pays them off she wouldnt be indebted to her----its a shame that some people are like this but its tru--- something else u learn abt life

Very true is impossible to live under £10,well she gets feed at home and her mom gives her transport fare to school,the only thing she wants is the way her mom takes over her salary.

HOW? I'll walk up straight to the Mum and tell her her wrongs. I'll suggest she desist from making her daughter a money making machine, else I'll inform the authority. By doing this, I assure you, she'd never request her daughter's salary again.

However, Her daughter must also take some responsibility in paying bills and helping out with other family needs.

And as regards to her study, she must be in school. She was given that visa for studying purposes and not for full time job (you can't earn 900 pounds by working part-time on a student visa)

And the Mum should stop using her daughter on the basis of wanting to secure a permanent status for her daughter, thereby making her to work like a slave.

@Poster, you know that your girl must be studying at a given college before she could be granted a dependant visa abi?

I don't believe the story especially when the poster said "at this winter time". This is surely no winter time in UK. Working full time and earning 900 quids with a student visa? And the slapping bit and every detail of the conversation, no, this story is not real. I am not saying that such things can not happen but I strongly believe that this particular story is not true so no need to crack my head for solutions to an imaginary story.

Somebody call chico ejiro, this story is got nollywood written all over it. Mr poster, either story this is made up or your girly is fibby. Working 15hrs with a student visa in the uk! Impossicant! Shes 21, a legal immigrant, and it never occured to her to contact social services?

I believe this guys story but I think there’s something fishy.

I think the girls’ immigration status is questionable. This is prolly the reason she is unable to open a bank account in her name. This may also be the reason the wage goes to her mum’s account who in turn only gives her £10.

5am – 2pm then 5pm – 10pm……….This shift pattern is no joke.
If she is indeed a studying student (which I do not believe) how much time does she devote to her studies?

If she’s been here for 2years and working for about same time then her visa should be up for renewal.

Here’s my thought:
The girl’s hands are tied. She has no choice but to stay with mum and live by her rules. This rules out any chance of renting a room or having a life of her own.

Calling the cops is out of the question if everything above is true.
I feel really bad for this girl. I hope everything works out for her.

No she has no issues with Immigration status she is on a 4yrs student visa and her mom is a british citizen (Red Passport) and she is going to renew with dependant,Infact her documents is already are the British home office for renewal. Also she is a very serious student she never miss her lectures if not i wont be bothered.

Its not about opening a new bank account infact she is using her personal bank account for her salary but her mom is with her Bank Card,as soon as she gets paid her mom withdraw her money from the ATM Machine

We would like know how you got the details of thier conversation word by word. Were you your there when this conversation between mother and daughter was going on, or you made this out of what your girlfreind told you.
Am asking this to accertain the fact that your girl is telling you the truth abt the woman being her real mother, or someone one who helped her to crossover on an agreement that she would payback certain amount. A lot of this evil is goign on every where in the world now, where some ladies bring young men and women, force them into labour for some years b4 they can be free to save for themselves.

Is very difficult for a woman to use and treat her biological daughter in such manner.

She was actually complaining to me and i convince her to go talk to her mom,she was scared to but i encouraged her,we were actually talking about it on phone and i ask her no to hang up cos we were on a free weekend calls (Same Network) and i heard every conversation,

But the lattest news was that her mom called her this morning and apologise about everything she has been doing to her and begged her to endure until she finish her house in Lagos (95% complete) and everything will be fine and pending the time,she will start giving her £60 out of her salary and once the house is complete she will never ask her for her money anymore

Those saying she should rent a place where is she going to find first months rent and deposit with the £10 she is receiving - come on get real, the moment she changes where the money is going she may come home from that work on night and find her belongings on the street.
