African entrepreneurs should start looking beyond creating tech start-ups, and begin to explore the opportunities that exist outside tech. I feel it's pertinent to draw attention to this trend, especiallyin Nigeria. We have a follow-follow culture, one which can be a strength, as well as a barrier to success. . The tech revolution, while its a welcome development, may not exactly be the best model to sustain development in Africa. It can help , if we find the right solutions, and leverage on tech to enhance value, but more imminent, is the need to expand the spaces in which we play as African entrepreneurs. These spaces include manufacturing, textile, mining, power, agriculture, education, environment et al. . Let's face it, we are not the west. We are many decades behind, and are forever playing catch-up. That has to stop. Africa needs to start developing, at our own pace, indigenous solutions to our unique challenges. Many young African entrepreneurs appear to be in a rush to become next Bill Gates, or Steve Jobs - a good aspiration if you ask me, but parochial. Parochial because, when it comes to building tech businesses that work, it is about value, about solving a real problem, not creating alternatives that do not necessarily make life better. The logic, that everything is now being done online, hence we must follow suit is flawed. Flawed because It's about structure, and working systems, of which we thoroughly lack in Africa. African entrepreneurs need to focus on creating systems, on building solid structures, upon which we can envisage and create a real tech future. Poor power supply, access to the internet, and cost of data subscriptions, low literacy levels, among others, are some factors militating against Africa's tech revolution. We have a situation, in which tech businesses that add no value are springing up, cluttering the internet and draining resources. Venture capitalists with interests in Africa, are also partly responsible for the tech-rush. You'll hardly hear them talking about investing in Africa, without laying an emphasis on tech. The question is: Is the sporadic "Techifisation" of Africa, what Africa really needs? Lamido Sanusi's rush, to implement the cashless policy in Nigeria, while considerably successful, still leaves a lot to be desired. . Almost every Nigerian, who has a bank account, has had an unpleasant experience with e-banking. Upon investigation, these unpleasant experiences are often not unconnected to a lack of solid and reliable structures and systems. The gross failure of the card readers, during the past elections, is another indication, of our unpreparedness for the tech revolution, as a nation. There was no adequate preparation, to forestall the malfunctioning of the devices, thus the embarrassment the nation faced when it's number one citizen could not be accredited for hours. Instead of rushing to create the next big tech business, we can focus on building the structures that have a direct impact on our developent, as a continent. . Young Africa, is creative and vibrant. Let us begin to harness our energy and creativity, to drive our continent's development, in every sector, let us begin to explore, the opportunities around us, while leveraging on the tech revolution, to enhance value. Let us begin expand the spaces in which we play. . Written by Tchidi Jacobs. Fb.com//peaceafrica |

The movie recommended to me is titled... DRISHYAM It is a Malayalam Movie. I never knew the industry existed until this movie. i rate this movie highly in terms of acting, storyline, direction and all. Its absolutely a masterclass of a flick... It is the story of a man who would do anything to protect his family. Go against a whole police force. A simple family with so much Love and bonding. A family who would put their lives on the line for Each other. A highly suspenseful movie and the last scene at the ending will kill ya. I was clapping for close to a minuete after watchin it and when i remember this flick. I clap again. |
Ever seen a movie so good but somehow it does not have commercial popularity? Some could be as a result of language barrier or for whatever reason. Someone recommended a movie for me to see and it was pretty good. I would like everyone else to see it. If you know any other movie that is pretty good and not just popular. You can drop it here: Movies from all over the world are allowed: Hollywood, Hindi, Korea, Philliphine or any other country. This thread is to celebrate these unpopular movies. Lets get started!!! You saying you dont want to marry a Muslim because he is Polygamous makes you an "Hypocrite". Isn't that a part of your religious belief. Your religion allows polygamy so why the descrimination against a man abiding by the principles of your religion? It goes to show that religious people sometimes do not believe in their own bullsh!t. If you can question some of the principles of your religion like Polygamy then there is absolutely no need to constrain yourself with Religious barrier. You have your answer already, go for the Christian guy. He is a better option than the muslim guy anytime, anyday. The Christian guy is single, has no baggage of kids and a wife that will be your sworn enemy foreva. Let me put it to you well. Religion is man-made and it has no divinity & nothing to do with the truth. There are over 10,000 different religion in the world. Like most people, you are a Muslim because you were 'Probably' born into a Muslim family. Almost %98 of people belong to the religion they were born into. Had they given birth to you in China & you have no knowledge of Islam. You will probably be a Zen Budhist. Were you born into an Hindu family in India. You will be practising Hinduism. So you see, the choice of your religion has nothing to do with divinity or truth. The simple answer is Geography & childhood indoctrination. That being said.. Always use your CommonSense when making important choices in life. Never let religion be a barrier or a factor in making rational decision. All the barriers we are talking about here are manmade & all in your head. There are 2 kinds of people in this world. Good and bad people. These set of people cut across all religion, race, gender, sexuality and all. So open your eyes wella. You can marry a Muslim and your marriage wont last whereas with a Christian you will be happy all your life and vice-versa. Choose to spend your life with a man that loves u, respect u and would care for you regardless of his Religion. My own advice: Leave the married man alone as you are not comfortable with Polygamy. Infact in Nigeria, Polygamy is the worst thing that can happen to any woman. Ask children and women that have lived in polygamous home. You dont wanna go through that kind of stress. Hear their stories & i bet ya, you wouldnt wanna pass through half of the Sh!t that goes on there. If the Christian guy fits the kind of man you are looking for & "Religion" is your only problem. I'd say forget that and Marry him. I am a product of a union between 2 Religion. (Dad's Muslim Alhaji & chief Imam. Mum's Christian) My parents has been happily married for more than 45 years and stil counting and they practise different religions. They had the understanding before they got married. It was never a problem. Like i said, Love and Understanding is all that matters. Talk to your Fiancee and reach a compromise. *** I hear them say it alot that a woman has no Religion. Her husband Religion will be her Religion. **I will say different strokes for different folks.. Do whateva float your boat just make sure in the end. You choose to spend your life with somebody that will love and cherish u foreva. *** Those saying you should wait till you meet a Muslim cuz it worked that way for them doesnt mean it will work that way for you. What if you never meet a muslim till your Biological clock runs out? Dont lose a good man because of something as 'unimportant' as Religion. |

By Titi Odunfa So….you are thinking of becoming an entrepreneur? I’m not sure whether to congratulate you or commiserate with you. Ok, I’m being somewhat facetious, but not completely so. Our culture significantly underestimates the difficulty of building a lasting entrepreneurial venture, one that can be scaled into a large enterprise and run independent of its founders. Hence, many end up chasing entrepreneurial dreams that do not grow to become anything more than a glorified hobby that waxes and wanes based on the founder’s personal circumstances. Building an institution requires the founder to have discipline and focus, and especially the ability to defer gratification. Hence my first question: Do you have nerves of steel? Don’t be fooled, entrepreneurship is not easy. A recent www.inc.com article discovered frequent occurrences of depression, anxiety and other mood disturbances among the founders of new businesses. The mental strength required to persist in the face of uncertainty is often at a level that pushes most founders to despair. This is why 70% of new ventures fail. Most people are not going to tell you the statistics as it seems everyone focuses on what they perceive to be the benefits of entrepreneurship, however, I would like you to know that most of the perceived benefits are not actually true: Freedom & flexibility: In the early days of your new venture, you will live and breathe your new venture, not have time for vacations and your family will complain that they haven’t seen you since last Christmas. Riches beyond measure: Truth is the majority of entrepreneurs fail and run up large debts, thereby ending up with less income and wealth than the average employee. Doing more of what you love to do: Probably the biggest misconception. I also believed starting an asset management company would allow me to focus on my love of investing, however I currently spend less than 10 percent of my time doing that. The rest of my time is spent on business strategy, fundraising, marketing, human resources, administration, technology and especially, ensuring my employees are motivated, satisfied, safe and healthy. So! I hope I’ve established that entrepreneurship and institution building is not all fun and games. Now given all the hassle, why should you do it? You should only do it if any of the below is true: You want to have impact on society, your country or the world by building a company that has the world’s most amazing product or service, for example Facebook, GTB You want to build a lasting legacy for your family for generations to come by building sustainable wealth, for example the Rockefellers, Dangotes You want to solve a key interest, need or problem for the society through the application of your talent or creativity, for example Oprah, Don Jazzy Entrepreneurship is not about you. It’s not about having the ability to wake up at noon. It’s not about being free to do whatever you want whenever you want to do it. Entrepreneurship is about service to your family, your society, and/or your country. And given that high calling, you need to have discipline, focus, the ability to delay gratification, and a host of other attributes that all require a suppression of your immediate desires. All of positive externalities, such as money, success, recognition, eventual flexibility come later as a reward of having achieved the primary mission of service. So back to my question: Do you have nerves of steel? If you believe you do, then it’s worth exploring the next steps which are the practical elements of entrepreneurship. You will need to ask yourself the following additional questions: Are you at the top of your game? So you have nerves of steel, now how much do you know? Building an institution, especially one in high finance, requires you to have a lot of specialized knowledge and experience. You will need to ensure that you have several years of formal education as well as formal apprenticeship at the best institutions you can find. Ensure you keep your grades up so you can get into the best schools to acquire the necessary skills and ensure you have a network of people who are likely to succeed. Same with work experience; you will need a few years of working at top institutions in order to translate your paper learning into practical doing. Strong work experience will also provide you a network in the industry which will serve you well when you create your own platform. What is your financing strategy? Your key take away from this section should be: save money and cultivate your network early. To build an institution, you will need start-up capital, and you will not be able to get this from your bank. As you work to make yourself top of your game, save a large chunk of your income from employment as you will need this to finance your business. The rest of it can come from “angels”; these are family, friends and investors who believe in your vision and are willing to back you early. Identify these people as early as possible and keep them apprised of your progress towards entrepreneurship. By Debola Oni Ladi studied IT in school and enjoyed his work in a Federal Government department. He spent the day attending to people who had enquiries on data, and he was fulfilled. Then, his department folded up and Ladi had to join the IT department in a bank. He was left to his resources in the computer room with only computers for company. He soon became bored and restless. Even though he tried his best and worked the hours, his appraisals were always very poor, and this in turn made him depressed. He was using the same qualifications he used in the Federal Government department, so he wondered why he was not doing well. A Career Direct® session revealed, amongst other things, that Ladi’s personality was highly extroverted, and therefore, he had a need to constantly engage with other people. He was quite unstructured, and the job in the bank was highly structured with routines. He had high computational skills - no doubt about that, but he was a people person. It was the lack of interpersonal activity that was draining his energy, because extroverts draw energy from other people. A good psychometric test opens us up and reveals us to ourselves. We are all wired differently. We have different “DNA”s in terms of our personality, interests, values and skills. A properly administered psychometric test will tell you to the point of percentages, how you measure up on given scales. It’s all about self-knowledge, and knowledge is power. Yes, you may want to work in that organization, but are you suited to work in Human Resources, Administration, Management, Finance or Marketing. Being properly located will make or mar you. I, for one would never work in marketing, because I couldn’t sell ice to someone in the Sahara Desert or hot coffee to an Eskimo in the North Pole. I learnt through bitter experience, what could have been deduced through a psychometric test such as Career Direct®. Why learn through trial and error, or rejection and failure, instead of paying for a psychometric test? “I wish we had access to these things when we were growing up, life would have been simpler for us.” A friend of mine exclaimed, after I carried out a psychometric test for her son, who was considering medicine and chemical engineering. The decision had to be made, so the test was taken. Plato’s famous injunction, “Know thyself,” which has been handed down and interpreted severally through the ages, cannot be more apt today in making career choices. An understanding of your strengths and weaknesses (which by the way I prefer to call non- strengths), cannot be over- emphasized. I call it self-knowledge. In making our career choices, it is imperative that we play to our strengths rather than our non – strengths. Read More Here: http://eepurl.com/_cicj |
