PoliticsReno Omokri On Ffk Defection Back To Apc - "My Principles, Not My Stomach" by hezyfem(op): 3:26pm On Oct 04, 2024
I am not Femi Fani-Kayode. My principles, not my stomach, dictate my words and actions. And I proved it today again. For those comparing me to Fani-Kayode, please read my lips, I will NEVER join the APC. Don’t judge me by FFK’s actions. Judge me by my past. Loyalty and stability are my past. It is extremely ignorant to use the past actions, and reputation of one man to judge another. Betrayal, instability and grovelling are not in my DNA or bloodline, and God willing, they will never, ever, be. In Christ’s Name!

PoliticsYou Can't Clear N30 Trillion—analyst Challenges Tinubu's Remark On Debt Clearing by hezyfem(op): 2:23pm On Oct 02, 2024
An Economist and financial expert Kalu Aja has faulted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s claims that his administration cleared ways and means of borrowing secured from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Tinubu had claimed that the debts were cleared in six months.

Tinubu claimed during his October 1, Independent Day speech that, “The more disciplined approach adopted by the Central Bank to monetary policy management has ensured stability and predictability in our foreign exchange market. We inherited a reserve of over $33bn 16 months ago. Since then, we have paid back the inherited forex backlog of $7bn.

“We have cleared the ways and means debt of over N30tn. We have reduced the debt service ratio from 97 per cent to 68 per cent.”

However, data released by the Debt Management Office regarding National Public Debt showed that the ways and means have not been cleared.

A circular dated September 8, 2024, titled, ‘Nigeria’s Total Public Debt Stock As At June 30, 2023’ which was released by the DMO confirmed that the securitized ways and means from the CBN has been added to the public debt stock.

DMO said, “The major addition to the Public Debt Stock was the inclusion of the N22.712tn securitized FGN’s Ways and Means Advances. The securitization of the FGN Ways and Means Advances after receipt of requisite approvals, has enabled its inclusion in the Total Public Debt Stock.

“This development, which was welcomed by development partners amongst others, has improved debt transparency and led to the reduction in Debt Service costs associated with the Ways and Means Advances.

“Other additions to the Debt Stock were New Borrowings by the FGN and the subnationals from local and external sources.”

Reacting, Aja described the claim by the president as misleading.

He said the president’s Independence Day speech specifically on the economy was ” filled with inaccuracies and falsehoods. Who vetted it?

“How can the President say he “cleared” Ways and Means of N30t? Or “attracted FDI of $30b.”

Aja said the Ways And Means were included in the official debt stock of Nigeria as bonds.

“These are not simple errors; these are gross lies and falsehoods, and it’s pretty straightforward to fact-check these.

“The media and strategy team of the President must realise that when President Tunubu speaks, it is a record, and his audience is also outside of Nigeria. This audience includes investors and multinational agencies.

“How does a Bloomberg trader trust a nation whose President says FDI again Foreign Direct Investment inflow was $30b in 12 months, yet reserves are $37bn and the currency is depreciating to $1:N1700? Not good.”

PoliticsYou Can't Clear N30 Trillion—analyst Challenges Tinubu's Remark On Debt Clearing by hezyfem(op): 2:04pm On Oct 02, 2024
In a recent statement via his official X account, Kalu Aja, a well-known financial analyst and educator, has responded to President Tinubu's Independence Day statement about clearing Nigeria's Ways and Means (W&M) debt.

President Tinubu had claimed that his administration had cleared the N30 trillion W&M debt.

However, Aja debunked this claim and questioned the accuracy of the president's claims.
You can't clear N30t; you don't have the cash or earnings.

You converted the existing W&M obligation to long-term bonds, which all Nigerians will repay.

Then you borrowed a fresh N7 trillion from Ways and Means," Kalu Aja wrote.

He pointed out that the country lacks the financial resources to eliminate such a large debt completely.

Aja explained that instead of clearing the debt, the government had restructured it.

This means that the debt was not wiped out but rather transformed into bonds, spreading the repayment over a longer period.

This move essentially passes the burden of repayment onto the Nigerian people, who will now have to bear the costs over time.

In addition to this, Aja highlighted that the government had not only restructured the existing debt but had also borrowed more money.

This means that despite the claims of debt reduction, the government has increased its borrowing, adding to the country's financial obligations.

Aja's comments suggest that while the government may have taken steps to manage the debt, it has not "cleared" it as President Tinubu claimed.

Instead, the debt has been reshaped and even increased, raising concerns about the long-term financial burden on Nigerians.

PoliticsHe Is Hungry For More Power & Want To Become The Richest President In The World by hezyfem(op): 8:28pm On Feb 18, 2024
PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu is hungry like most of us who complain about hardship in the land. He is hungry for more power. He is hungry for acceptance among Nigerians. His hunger for recognition as a performing President gives him sleepless nights.

Let us not speculate that he is hungry to recover his election expenses. What are the billions that went into the election compared to the gains? No, his hunger lies elsewhere. And time is of essence.

Tinubu is hungry to impress you enough for him to continue presiding over a country that is on a free fall. He is hungry to quickly get over some things.

As a renowned strategist, Tinubu is ready to deal with important things like possible obstacles to 2027 election. He cannot waste his time bothering about hungry people who imagine that the President is not hungry.

Like you and I, he too complains that things are hard as he scrambles to get his men and women into places that matter for the future. The race is against time. The present is about sharing the spoils of the war you call 2023 election. The President has hundreds of thousands of appointments to make to deal with his hunger and that of his followers, including recent converts.

Complaints are in abundance that Muhammadu Buhari took everything away but we see enough farmed out to Tinubu and company to know that extreme hunger is avoidable for ordinary Nigerians if it was important to Tinubu.
Hunger would be a great weapon in 2027 that would benefit Tinubu. His war chest would have enlarged. Poor Nigerians would vote for the next piece of bread, that is the ones who make it to 2027 and had not deleted their interests in voting.

Tinubu manages our hunger with words while important issues get immediate attention. He pulled out N24 billion from the grains fund to meet pilgrimage obligations. He clearly makes religion priority over food. Will the dead need religion?

His woolly appreciation of the hunger in the land results in the gaps in addressing it. Tinubu has never associated food shortages, or high prices as his aides admit, with insecurity. He cannot fight insecurity so he does not want to be reminded about it.
Farmers are being killed and their farms destroyed. Residents of most farming communities have deserted them. The President is silent on their plight. Perhaps, it will cost him votes to fight the criminals who make Nigeria unsafe, not only for farming.

Even if criminals were not devastating farming communities, the cost of fuel has added to the uncertainty of food delivery.

The President has no solution to that.
His empty promises are for his survival. In July 2023, he made vacuous promises with March 2024 as deadline for implementing them. Some of the promises:

To strengthen the manufacturing sector, increase its capacity to expand and create good paying jobs. We are going to spend N75 billion between July 2023 and March 2024.

“Our objective is to fund 75 enterprises with great potential to kick-start sustainable economic growth, accelerate structural transformation, and improve productivity.
“Each of the 75 manufacturing enterprises will be able to access N1 billion credit at nine percent per annum with a maximum of 60 months repayment for long-term loans and 12 months for working capital.

“We are going to energise this very important sector (MSMEs) with N125 billion.

“Out of the sum, we will spend N50 billion on Conditional Grant to 1 million nano businesses between now and March 2024. Our target is to give N50,000 each to 1,300 nano business owners in each of the 774 local governments across the country.

“In like manner, we will fund 100,000 MSMEs and start-ups with N75 billion.

“Under this scheme, each enterprise promoter will be able to get between N500,000 to N1 million at nine percent interest per annum and a repayment period of 36 months.”

These mouthings were to be the fulcrum of the Tinubu economy. We are days away from March. What happened to the Tinubu economic wizardry that many hailed as a magic wand? Some had reminded the President then that unless electricity and insecurity were addressed that his wonder plan would not succeed. Others had wondered where he would get the money. Tinubu has spent nine months telling the people he cares – with words.

Money no longer seems to be the only challenge. Tinubu lacks the capacity to drive issues to resolutions unless they benefit him and company. Issues like hunger, electricity, and insecurity just overwhelm him.

He has been boasting about releasing 42,000 metric tonnes of food. His elixir? All Farmers Association of Nigeria, AFAN, National President, Arc. Kabir Ibrahim, in July 2023 had told New Telegraph, that Nigeria had little grain in her silos nationwide since farmers had not returned to farms over failure of government to provide security at the farms. Nigeria used most of her grains during COVID-19. This was the farmers’ group response to Tinubu’s order on release of 200,000 metric tonnes of grains. Who got the grains in 2023?
The absent-mindedness in managing food shortages is reflected in the President’s current vaccilation between 42,000 and 102,000 metric tonnes of grains. Is he importing the grains? Were the silos re-stocked?

As the hunger bits and anger appears in street protests, the economy has become famed for serial circulars from the Central Bank on the Dollar. The expertise in managing the economy manifests in most decisive measures like moving offices from Abuja to Lagos.

What is left is for Tinubu’s media to blame political opponents for the hunger. An earlier lecture that there was no food scarcity failed.
Tinubu has no plan for the economy. His government has been in panic mode for months. Price control for unavailable commodities? Price control did not work for the military with decrees and guns.

A good starting point would be for Tinubu to admit his challenges, and accept that he has surrounded himself with people who cure their own hunger by making Tinubu a god. Tinubu asks us to be patient as he gads about with minimal concerns about Nigeria.

PoliticsEXCLUSIVE: Sanwo-olu Increases Alpha Beta’s Monthly Payment To N2.5 Billion by hezyfem(op): 1:30pm On Jan 25, 2022
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has boosted monthly financial allocation to Alpha Beta LLC from N800 million under his two immediate predecessors to N2.5 billion at present, Peoples Gazette can report, as Bola Tinubu begins calling in favours towards his presidential objective next year.
State officials and financial records obtained by The Gazette detailed how Mr Sanwo-Olu started paying N2.5 billion to Alpha Beta — the controversial tax processor for the nation’s commercial capital — about a year after he assumed office in an arrangement officials said was aimed at warehousing funds for Mr Tinubu’s campaign.
Our findings suggest a marker of how Mr Tinubu still maintains a dreadful leverage over a state he last ran nearly two decades ago — and the stretch Mr Sanwo-Olu would cover to indulge the man largely credited with shooting him from political shadows to the centre stage.
Mr Tinubu became the first major contender to publicly disclose interest in leading the continent’s most populous and largest economy, an ambition everyday Nigerians had long suspected would be borne by the politician’s vessel of ill-gotten cash and unredeemed favours.

Open secret
Alpha Beta was incorporated in 2002 to handle computation, tracking and reconciliation of internally-generated revenue in Lagos. Mr Tinubu was governor at the time and the pliable state assembly set the firm’s monthly commission at 10 per cent of accrued revenue.
Mr Tinubu concluded his two terms as Lagos governor in 2007 and, shortly thereafter, his fingerprints started magnifying around Alpha Beta’s business. In 2010, Mr Tinubu’s alleged greed was blamed for a months-long confrontation with Tunde Fashola, his successor who had pushed back against arbitrary and exorbitant monthly payment to Alpha Beta.
As part of Mr Fashola’s efforts to curb Mr Tinubu’s excesses, Alpha Beta’s monthly payment since 2013 hovered around N800 million per month, according to financial records reviewed by The Gazette. Mr Fashola left office after two terms in 2015. He was succeeded by Akinwunmi Ambode, who also left the arrangement at N800 million per month throughout his four-year tenure.
Mr Tinubu continues to deflect questions about his interest in Alpha Beta, but behind the scenes funds transferred to the firm from Lagos government accounts have been directly traced to his family members, business interests and political cronies.
In November 2020, The Gazette exposed suspicious financial dealings between Alpha Beta and Ocean Trust, an onshore shell venture which Mr Tinubu has been using to empty funds into Lagos-based media group TVC and other businesses he had publicly admitted owning.
In March 2021, The Gazette reported that Mr Tinubu has been under EFCC investigation for graft since at least August 2020. Mr Tinubu denied corruption allegations and authorities have yet to bring any charges against him.

‘Tinubu Group of Companies’
As of early 2020, but no later than July, Mr Sanwo-Olu had increased Alpha Beta’s share of the state’s revenue to N2.5 billion to bolster Mr Tinubu’s edge in what political observers anticipate would be a hotly-contested race for the ruling party’s ticket, according to documents and officials.
Records said Alpha Beta received N2,345, 816, 266.122 and N2, 378, 277, 356. 55 into its UBA account number 1021477046 from Lagos government account on July 2, 2020, and again on July 24.
Similar amounts were paid into the firm’s bank accounts monthly throughout last year, The Gazette found, with taxes and other statutory deductions coming out of the N2.5 billion. The funds represent a N1.7 billion increase from the N800 million Mr Sanwo-Olu’s predecessors paid for nearly a decade.
The decision to raise Alpha Beta was settled in the wake of the pandemic in 2020, according to a senior civil servant familiar with the matter. The official said Messrs Sanwo-Olu and Tinubu concluded that it was more strategic to start stockpiling cash from early enough due to the uncertainties of the global health catastrophe.
“They have turned Lagos State and Alpha Beta into sister subsidiaries of Tinubu Group of Companies,” the official told The Gazette under anonymity to avoid reprimand for discussing secret state business without permission.
Alpha Beta, a company of about 71 personnel, has no capacity to legitimately earn billions every month, and should not be receiving funds well above its 10 percent commission from total tax receipts per month, the official said.
The official added that the Sanwo-Olu administration had no legal justification to unilaterally increase Alpha Beta’s payment, but did it anyway because he was not expecting any backlash from Lagosians or the law enforcement.

‘No rate hikes’
Whereas Mr Tinubu only declared his interest in the presidential race two weeks ago, he had set efforts in motion well in advance. In November 2020, The Gazette was the first to report that the ruling party chieftain had quietly opened campaign headquarters in a 2,700 square metres Maitama property that once housed a private school.
Although Mr Tinubu initially denied The Gazette’s story, his office later owned up, but claimed it was set up by a few of his proteges. Mr Sanwo-Olu, a loyalist and political godson to Mr Tinubu, provided support towards the property, alongside other political associates of Mr Tinubu’s who have been supporting him as a way of appreciating his longstanding benevolence, two people familiar with the dealings said.
Mr Sanwo-Olu’s apparent use of public funds to underwrite Mr Tinubu’s campaign bolsters claims that Mr Tinubu chose him to replace Mr Ambode because he would acquiesce whenever necessary. Mr Ambode’s loyalists had said he fell out with Mr Tinubu because he did not succumb to the presidential aspirant’s desire to corner state resources.
Mr Sanwo-Olu has reportedly launched efforts to stand for re-election next year, and would be counting on Mr Tinubu’s support.
When reached for comments, Mr Tinubu did not confirm or deny pilfering Lagos funds for his presidential campaign through Alpha Beta, but strongly denied wielding control over Mr Sanwo-Olu or state resources.
“I am not His Excellency Jide Sanwo-Olu,” Mr Tinubu told The Gazette by telephone over the weekend. “I have no control over how state resources are allocated.”
Lagos information commissioner Gbenga Omotoso initially downplayed The Gazette’s findings as a rumour, despite being made aware of bank records in our possession. But Gboyega Akosile, the governor’s chief spokesman, later provided comments to The Gazette, admitting that Alpha Beta’s monthly payment might have shot up recently, but that it was not because the consultants’ billables were hiked.
“I don’t know where you got your figures,” Mr Akosile told The Gazette over the weekend. “But the revenue of the consultant is dependent on the revenue generated by the state.”
“The governor has not tampered with the rate of Alpha Beta,” the spokesman added. “It is a fallacious claim that the governor has increased revenues accruable to Alpha Beta. The governor is a financial expert and he understands the nitty-gritty of finance and will not tamper with such arrangements.”
When reached for comments, Alpha Beta chairman Tunde Badejo told The Gazette he was in a meeting and will call back with a response to our enquiries. He failed to do so and ducked subsequent attempts to reach him.
‘Competent ambition’
As Mr Tinubu’s antecedents writ large over his presidential aspiration, the secretive system he imposed to shield himself and anointed successors from accountability has earned him more criticism from his political rivals. Despite being Nigeria’s preeminent urban settlement with over 15 million people, Lagos has continued to reject calls to open its financial records to public scrutiny.
The state has been leading a fight to quash the 2011 Freedom of Information Act as part of efforts to perpetuate opaque public accounting method that has allowed Mr Tinubu to divert state funds to his pocket with little resistance from taxpayers and political opposition.
Olabode George, a top Lagos politician of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, condemned the presidential ambition of Mr Tinubu in a recent interview, cautioning Nigerians against voting the APC chieftain.
Mr Tinubu “will take the country to the gutters,” Mr George said in the interview with Vanguard.
In a 2020 interview with Arise TV, Mr George also faulted Alpha-Beta’s collection of internally generated revenue in Lagos, saying that there were leakages in the state government’s purse that should be blocked.
“What is the essence of the AlphaBeta? Where else in the world would you have an inland revenue service who have their own staff who are supposed to go out and collect the fees, but you have an independent company to be supposedly collecting the internally generated revenue from our state?” Mr George said.
Orji Kalu, a senator of Mr Tinubu’s ruling party, recently said the presidential aspiration of the former Lagos governor was unreasonable and an idea “dead on arrival.”
But Mr Tinubu maintained that he has requisite competence to see through his ambition.
“I have the competence, vision, and capacity to build on the foundation of the president,” he said after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on January 10. Mr Tinubu would likely face an ardent primary challenge in Yemi Osinbajo, the incumbent vice-president once seen as the shining light amongst his political proteges.

PoliticsIsa Jere Idris Disguises As Passport Applicant, Catches Corrupt Officials by hezyfem(op): 5:03pm On Oct 18, 2021
The Acting Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Isa Jere Idris, on Monday, disguised as an applicant for an international passport at the Lagos State Command, Ikoyi, where he alleged that some officers of the service offered to engage in shady deals with him.

Mr Idris, in an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES on the phone, said he decided to walk in unannounced in order to gain firsthand experience of what Nigerians are going through “in the hands of unscrupulous officers of NIS.”

The acting CG said when he assumed office in September, he had pledged to tackle three things including addressing the challenges faced by Nigerians in their efforts to procure international passports, enhance border security and improve workers’ welfare.

He said his unscheduled visit to Ikoyi on Monday was to confirm the allegations against officers of the immigration offices in Lagos State including Ikoyi, Ikeja and FESTAC town.

Ikoyi experience
He said when he approached the officers at the Ikoyi command, he was given various high prices for the different categories of passports.

“When I approached the officers, they offered me the menu without recognising me. They said 32 pages of the international passport for five years would cost me N45,000 instead of N27,000. They said 64 pages for five year would cost me N55,000 instead of N37,000, and N95,000 for 64 pages for 10 years instead of N72,000.

“I was asked where I was from and I said Niger State. They also asked me if I had a letter of indigeneship and other documents and I said I didn’t have any one. So they said they would collect N3,500 to provide all the documents for me,” he said.

The immigration boss said as of the time of speaking to our reporter on the phone, the officers were yet to know who he was, and that the Comptroller for Lagos Command of the service, Bauchi Aliyu, was surprised when he eventually showed up in his office.

“You know he just returned to Lagos from Abuja. He didn’t know that I was coming to town. So he is still shocked as I am talking to you,” he said.

What next?
Mr Idris said the lesson will help the service to strengthen the passport issuance process, saying having an international passport of a country confers nationality on its holder and so it must have integrity.

“So with what I have experienced firsthand today, it simply means that anybody can come in from anywhere and obtain our passport. This is unacceptable. So I can assure you that the Immigration Service under our watch will strengthen the issuance process and the integrity of the document,” the acting CG said.

Launch of appointment platform
Mr Idris said in the next two weeks the service with the support of the Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, will launch an appointment platform for applicants, saying the idea of anybody approaching passport offices anytime for issuance cannot continue.

He said: “The document has integrity and so the processes of issuing it must have integrity. We must verify attached relevant documents because with what I saw this morning anybody can claim to be who he or she is not.

“So within a maximum of three weeks passport renewal must be done, but we must also ensure relevant background checks on the applicants especially based on their letters of indigeneship and birth certificates. What they do with these documents by the syndicates is to backdate them.”

He said except in some exceptional cases, there is nowhere in the world where passports are produced in one day, saying Nigeria must adopt global best practices in order to ensure the integrity of our documents and their sanctity.

“If you claim you are from Kano or Rivers we must find out if your claims are true or not,” he added.

Officers caught
He said the officers caught in the act during his unscheduled visit have been documented and that they would be disciplined accordingly.

“The laws are there, and so they will be made to face the law. There are about three of them but we are very sure that it is an organised crime. They are not alone but further investigations would reveal that,” he said.

The acting comptroller-general said the interior minister is working hard towards achieving his mandates of securing the nation’s border lines through the agencies under him including the immigration service and that the difficulties being experienced by Nigerians in procuring passports would soon become a thing of the past.

Mr Idris said he was committed to addressing the challenge of corruption in the service.

PoliticsAuctioneers Die Of Hunger, High BP As Lagos CP Odumosu Refuses To Work With Them by hezyfem(op): 1:41pm On Jun 10, 2021
Two auctioneers licensed to auction and dispose off abandoned vehicles in police stations in Lagos state police command have reportedly died of high blood pressure and hunger as they have been rendered jobless since Lagos State commissioner of police CP Hakeem Odumosu assumed office.

The deceased auctioneers simply identified as Mr. Tajudeen and Mr. Innocent were among over thirty auctioneers who said they have not been allowed to auction any abandoned vehicles in police stations in Lagos police command since the Lagos state commissioner of police CP Hakeem Odumosu assumed office.

An auctioneer said ” Innocent is from Imo State and Tajudeen is from Oyo State and they have been auctioneering vehicles long before CP Odumosu came on board. They died due to hunger, high blood pressure as they cannot pay their bills and fend for their families. The CP is not working with any of us and we are official auctioneers licensed by the police. We register every year but since last year ,none of us have been allowed to auction any vehicle. Our members are dying. Others are sick and many like myself cannot pay rent, school fees and take care of our family because CP Odumosu has taken away our means of livelihood. The other day ,my landlord told me my house rent had expired. I couldn’t pay him. I have been begging him to exercise patience but till when?”

Auctioneers who spoke on condition of anonymity over fear of being victimised said ” Since the time the Lagos state commissioner of police CP Hakeem Odumosu assumed office last year, he has prevented us from auctioning any vehicle. He said he is not ready to work with us. When we showed him our licence and authorization to auction police abandoned vehicles which we have been doing for more than twenty years, he still insisted that he does not want to work with us . We asked him who he wants to work with but he refused to reply us”.

A resident in Lagos Marcus King said the police handling of auction of abandoned vehicles is vague.

He said ” The CP Odumosu said through a statement by the Lagos State police command spokesperson CSP Muyiwa Adejobi that members of the public can visit the police stations for their vehicles but what station can we go to? When the auctioneers were handling the issue of abandoned vehicles in police station, they will list the vehicles, the make, colours and the plate numbers of the vehicles in addition , they will tell the public through newspaper publication what stations the vehicles are but the CP’s order on abandoned vehicles since he took over that aspect has not given all the necessary details .These abandoned vehicles were seized or tolled by Task Force police and others , the vehicles can be kept at any location so where can we go to look for them? I will advise that the job of the professionals should be left to professionals. Let the CP allow the auctioneers do their job”.

Following the alleged stoppage of their legitimate job, the auctioneers said they are finding it very difficult to fend for their families.

” I do not understand why the Lagos state commissioner of police CP Hakeem Odumosu would stop us from our legitimate means of livelihood. He is there enjoying himself as a CP earning all the salaries and the peck that comes with his exalted office but he refused to allow us make earns to cater for our families. We know how the Covid-19 pandemic affected everyone but those badly hit are those non salary earners like us so its been very difficult for us to feed , take care of children fees, pay rents and fulfil other financial obligation”.

The auctioners therefore appealed to the new IGP and the police high command to prevail on the Lagos state commissioner of police CP Hakeem Odumosu to work with them.

“We are appealing to the new IGP Baba to come to our rescue and the government to intervene as all our appeal , cry and even death of our members have not moved CP Odumosu. When the former Lagos CP Edgal Imohimi was in power, he also denied us from our legitimate job. He only allowed one of us to be the auctioneer. Later , that auctioneer, allowed us to auction with him and we were back in business but CP Hakeem Odumosu has stopped everyone of us. We wonder who is now auctioning over five thousand abandoned vehicles since he became CP, where are these vehicles? Who is keeping them?”

When contacted , Lagos state police command spokesperson CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi did not reply to the inquiry.

CrimeTransgender Woman Put In Male Jail Cell In Indonesia by hezyfem(op): 4:22pm On Nov 26, 2020
Indonesian rights groups have slammed police for placing a transgender woman in a jail cell with a man, saying it underscored widespread discrimination in the world’s biggest Muslim majority nation.
Social media influencer Millen Cyrus, 21, who has one million followers on Instagram, was detained with a male friend on drug-possession charges in the capital Jakarta at the weekend.
Cyrus told local media this week that she hoped she would be moved from the male holding cell.
Authorities have since placed her in a solitary cell. But they defended the initial decision by pointing to the suspect’s government identity card which said Cyrus was male.
“The perpetrator’s status was male as acknowledged in his identity card,” said Jakarta police spokesman Yusri Yunus.
“However, given the situation, (authorities) placed her in a special cell alone.”
The move sparked a backlash on social media and rights groups said it highlighted the challenges faced by gay and transgender Indonesians.
Two years ago, police in the conservative province of Aceh made headlines when they publicly humiliated a dozen transgender women by forcibly cutting their hair as they made the group wear male clothing and speak in a masculine voice.
“We’re demanding that police respect the rights of suspects during investigations with non-discriminatory and non-transphobic perspectives,” said Arus Pelangi at Indonesia’s Transgender Network.
“Police discriminated against her gender identity … by placing (Cyrus) in a men’s detention cell.”
The Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR) said authorities need to do a better of job of respecting transgender people.
“Authorities should have been able to see the vulnerability of a suspect,” said ICJR researcher Maidina Rahmawati.
“If they were confused about where to place (Cyrus), they should have involved psychologists or social workers who are able to assess (her) needs.”
Nairaland GeneralU.S. Protests Not About Black Lives – Oyakhilome by hezyfem(op): 3:14pm On Jun 29, 2020
The president of Love World Incorporated, also known as Christ Embassy, Chris Oyakhilome, has dismissed the Black Lives Matter riots in the U.S. and other major cities around the world, saying the protests are not about black lives.

The Nigerian cleric alleged the protests are part of a grand scheme to get rid of the police and implant microchips into Americans and other citizens of the world, with a view to controlling them.

Millions of people around the world recently protested the killing of a black man, George Floyd, by police officers in the USA. There were riots in several U.S. cities, forcing authorities to impose curfews.

Protests broke out across the US after George Floyd, an African-American, was killed. Floyd died on May 25 after he was arrested by a white Minneapolis officer, who pinned him to the ground for minutes, kneeling on his neck.

But, the cleric, in a televised sermon on Sunday, said once the police have been taken off the streets, microchips would be implanted into citizens, which would give the government all the needed information, thereby reducing crime.

“There are many who don’t know what is going on in the United States with the riots. It’s not about the guy that died, it is not about black folks, and it’s not about black lives matter. I will tell you what it is about. From protests to riots and then more people have died since then and the call for disbanding, abrogation, cancellation, defunding of the police,” Mr Oyakhilome said in the circulated video.

“Why is that? Do you think it is limited to the United States? No, it is not. Why are they doing it? It is part of the game. It is simply because they want to come in with the alternative method for security. What is that alternative method? It is total control- RFID microchip. That is what it’s about,” he said.

According to him, ‘and so, you are going to find people getting rid of their police and you will see cities experimenting one after the other. The cities say no police, everyone must get the microchip.

“And with that, you are going to know everybody. They will know everyone and crime will be controlled and they have got the media to hype it and in spite of its failure, they will praise it like the best thing in the world. That is what it’s about,” he said.

Mr Oyakhilome, in April, claimed the COVID-19 pandemic and the government-ordered lockdown in Nigeria was part of a ploy to introduce 5G technology in the country.

The pastor had alleged that when people are indoors, the government would begin laying fiber optic cables for the 5G.

The cleric said the COVID-19 was being spread by the 5G technology in other parts of the world. He later backtracked, saying he was only concerned about the health implication of the new technology.

Last month, LoveWorld Television Ministry, the Christian TV channel founded by Mr Oyakhilome’s Christ Embassy, was sanctioned for falsely linking 5G to the coronavirus pandemic by Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator.

The Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-rufai in a new media chat with the people of the state has given a stern warning against public gatherings in celebration of the Eid-el-fitri which is to officially mark the end of the Ramadan fast.

According to him, it is important to adhere to all health guidelines put in place to contain the spread of Coronavirus in the state.

El-rufai during the media chat made it known that there is no specific date fixed yet for the lifting of the existing lockdown in the state and anyone who through any means find himself out of Kaduna state will not be allowed back.

He stated that he will be in patrol to ensure strict adherence to the ban on inter state movement in company of his deputy and the SSG who will be strategically stationed.

He however noted that the government will give out palliative care to the poor masses to alleviate their suffering and make them feel loved while the may salary will be promptly paid.

The Kaduna state government while reacting to call from different heirachy to ease the ban on religious gathering said Christians failed to beg for such during easter celebration warning that "Mosques will not be opened for those shouting for it to be opened. They don't love the religion more than Saudi Arabia that has kept all mosques closed."

While describing some politicians as illiterates for failing to properly educate the masses, he says the government has placed a ban on the almajiri system of education.

It is on record that some states have eased the ban on religious gathering to allow for sallah celebration which is usually observed with congregational prayers despite warning from the sultan of Sokoto that all Muslims should pray at home.

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has arrived Awe, Nasarawa State, to meet with Muhammadu Sanusi, the deposed emir of Kano.

Mr El-Rufai arrived Mr Sanusi’s abode in Awe at about 12:46 p.m. in a convoy of about six security and official vehicles.

He went straight into the house to have a meeting with the deposed emir.

There was a security barricade around the house preventing observers and journalists from going to meet the former emir.

Mr Sanusi was on Monday sacked as emir by the Kano State Government.

He was then banished to Nasarawa and had his freedom resticted by security officials.

On Friday, a federal court in Abuja ordered the police and the State Security Service to rlease Mr Sanusi.

The meeting between Mr Sanusi and Mr El-Rufai was still on at the time of this report.

After Mr Sanusi’s sack as emir, Mr El-Rufai appointed him into two offices including as the chancellor of the Kaduna State university.

Nairaland GeneralNcs The New Highway King by hezyfem(op): 8:06am On Dec 24, 2019
It is no longer news that between Sagamu and Onitsha, there are about 100 roadblocks manned by different teams of the Nigeria Police Force ( the regular police , Mobile Police , and FSARS ), the Nigerian Army, the Federal Road Safety Corps , the Nigeria Customs Service , and other revenue agents of different state governments. In some places, the roadblocks are less than 300 metres apart. Even though these roadblocks are meant to provide security or identify defaulters , they have become grand sources of exploitation .
Among all these groups , the Nigeria Customs Service is the most feared these days . The reason is that their demands are higher than other groups . In recent years , the NCS has been on a drive to ensure that vehicles imported into Nigeria pay the appropriate duty. The recent ban on the importation of some items like rice is another reason . The border closure is another reason.
Anybody who has a car, no matter how old, is made to show a proof of customs duty payment . Because the appropriate duty is high, many freight-forwarding agents pay lower customs duty to get many of the secondhand vehicles into the country. Most of those who eventually buy the vehicles are not aware of such under-payment . Most officials of the NCS , aware of this , exploit it to the fullest to demand heavy bribes.
Travelling from Lagos to the South -East this Christmas period, I saw many checkpoints on the highway . Somehow , the NCS officials were busy at most of the checkpoints at the time I got to them, until I ran into the team at Iwu in Edo State. Hitherto , I had to deal with police officers, who would check vehicle particulars , driving licence and the contents of the vehicle. Some would straightaway ask for Christmas gifts, but would wave me on if I said I had nothing to give . Because of groups like these , many drivers would keep notes of N100, N200, and N500 handy.
However, when I was flagged down by the NCS at Iwu, Edo State, the approach was different. Two customs officials spoke to me . I identified myself and told them that the full duty on the vehicle had been paid . They asked me rhetorically if the full duty on a vehicle could ever be paid . They asked me to give them a “Christmas gift ” and go. Until then , I had not given any money to any of the officials at the checkpoints. The presence of the children in the car made it even worse to be parting with money. We always had a nice discussion and I would commend them for their work and they would wave me on upon my response that there was nothing available to give them at the moment.
The manner of the demand for the Christmas gift by the customs officials was different. It was frontal and direct. I was not sure what to make of it. I hesitated, looked at my wife , but eventually brought out a N500 note to give to them. They said no, and told me that the least they would take was N2 ,000 or they would check my documents. At that point , I saw that it was not an appeal.
I asked them if that was meant to be a threat . They said it was not a threat but a simple statement . I insisted that I was not going to give them any N2 ,000. They told me if that was how I wanted it , I should bring out my customs duty documents.
READ ALSO : Tell Danjuma that we have been sleeping soundly
My wife and I had created a separate file for the customs duty papers . I handed over the file to them and parked well. They took the file to another officer and went on to stop other vehicles . While I was parking , they had stopped another vehicle and were demanding N3, 000 gratification from the driver .
The officer that had our file opened the customs duty chart on his phone. While he was doing that, I introduced myself and informed him that his colleagues gave me the condition of giving them a bribe of N2, 000 or being checked. He feigned surprise and asked me which officers did that. I pointed them out . He made some weak defence that confirmed to me that it was a collective racket.
He opened the duty chart and keyed in the model of the car and the year. The duty showed that over N700,000 was meant to be paid as import duty, but our vehicle papers showed that over N600, 000 was paid . Other charges made the total amount we paid N768,883. He said we did not pay the appropriate duty , but that the difference was not too high to be a big problem . We responded that we did not go through an agent , but went to the Nigeria Customs Service (FOU ZONE A ) , Revenue Recovery Committee, Ikeja , Lagos and paid exactly what was given to us by the NCS .
He went on to add other charges , including VAT , and the total amount he said we were supposed to pay on the car came to over a million naira. We insisted that we paid the full duty as was given to us . He then asked us if we were already using the vehicle before the duty was paid . We said that the car had come in before we chose to voluntarily go for the duty assessment . He said if that was the case , then we had paid the appropriate duty, as the levies he was talking about were meant to be paid at the ports.
So, he handed us our papers and asked us to go. We got to the car and spent some minutes watching the drama playing out between the customs officers and other motorists. The modus operandi of the NCS officers is obvious. A roadblock is created . A group of about five officials flags down a vehicle. A team of two goes to the driver to negotiate a bribe of about N3 ,000 with a subtle threat of checking the amount of duty paid if the bribe is not paid . If the motorist parts with the money , they are allowed to drive on . But if the motorist does not play ball, their vehicle documents are checked. If his customs duty is low, they are told to pay as much as N500,000 as a bribe or the car will be impounded and auctioned. The negotiation then starts. Depending on the level of underpayment , they may end up paying as much as N300,000 on the spot .
There is a team in a customs pickup van ready to chase after any motorist who decides not to stop when flagged down. About 12 customs officials man a checkpoint. If 500 people part with the demanded N3, 000 in a day , that comes to N1, 500,000 per day. If 20 cars are made to pay as much as N100, 000 each for underpayment of customs duty , that comes to N2 ,000, 000. The total is N2, 500,000 per day . That is money that goes into the private pockets of the NCS officials , both those by the roadside and other “ stakeholders” in air -conditioned offices, waiting for “ the boys to return. ” By the time that money is shared among those on duty and other “ stakeholders”, each person on duty may get a minimum of N100, 000 per day for standing by the roadside and threatening motorists. No wonder , many Nigerians pay as much as N2m bribe to be employed in the Nigeria Customs Service .
One thing that arose during the payment of the customs duty for the car was that the official in charge advised that we should not plead for a reduction of the duty, because the NCS officials on the highway would use it against us. It was wise counsel .
It is ridiculous that the NCS does not punish its officials for collecting too low a duty from vehicle owners, but choose to punish the motorist who is driving around within the nation. Funnily enough , the nation says it is fighting corruption at a time every government agency is boldly and brazenly demanding and collecting bribes at every point of contact .

CrimeList Of 77 Nigerians Charged By FBI For Massive Fraud In America by hezyfem(op): 11:35am On Aug 23, 2019
A 252-count federal grand jury indictment unsealed Thursday charged 77 Nigerian nationals with participating in a massive conspiracy to steal millions of dollars through a variety of fraud schemes and launder the funds through a Los Angeles-based money laundering network as uncovered by the FBI.

The indictment was unsealed after law enforcement authorities, led by the FBI, Thursday morning arrested 14 defendants across the United States, with 11 of those arrests taking place in the Los Angeles region.

Two defendants were already in federal custody on other charges, and one was arrested earlier this week. The remaining defendants are believed to be abroad, with most of them located in Nigeria.

The indictment alleges that the defendants and others used various online fraud schemes – including business email compromise (BEC) frauds, romance scams, and schemes targeting the elderly – to defraud victims out of millions of dollars.

According to a criminal complaint also unsealed Thursday, co-conspirators based in Nigeria, the United States and other countries contacted the lead defendants in the FBI indictment – Valentine Iro, 31, of Carson, and Chukwudi Christogunus Igbokwe, 38, of Gardena, both Nigerian citizens – for bank and money-service accounts that could receive funds fraudulently obtained from victims.

Once members of the conspiracy convinced victims to send money under false pretences, Messrs Iro and Igbokwe coordinated the receipt of funds and oversaw an extensive money-laundering network, according to the 145-page indictment, the FBI.

Nairaland GeneralAmnesty International, Ex-nhrc Boss Condemn Clampdown On Sex Workers by hezyfem(op): 6:14pm On Apr 30, 2019
Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

Amnesty International as well as a former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, have condemned the clampdown on sex workers by the police and the Federal Capital Territory authorities.

According to AI, the raids are discriminatory because only women are being arrested.

The organisation wrote on Twitter, “The raids and abuse targeted women, hence discriminatory and are gender-based violence. We are calling FCT and police authorities to investigate allegations of abuse of the women.

“Amnesty International is concerned by a spate of arrests and humiliation of women by FCT officials and the police, in some parts of Abuja. These arrests clearly show unacceptable deliberate targeting of women.”

In a series of tweets, Odinkalu also condemned the raids, insisting that prostitution was not a crime.

The activist said many women were wrongly accused of being sex workers when in fact this was not true.

The former NHRC boss wrote, “Some folks still think in 2019 that it’s OK for people claiming to wear uniforms provided by Nigerians or in our name to abduct women from clubs, calling them prostitutes. First, as shocking as it may sound, being a ‘prostitute’ – whatever that means – is actually not a crime

“Second, there’s no ‘prostitute’ exception to the fundamental rights in the constitution. In particular, the rights to dignity of the human person and to personal liberty apply to all persons within Nigeria, not just to those whom we like.

“Third, there’s something fundamentally off about upending sovereign powers and prerogatives of equal protection to abuse mass segments of its vulnerable population by stigmatising forms of identity. These people are not fighting immorality; they criminalise womanhood.”

The activist noted that an ECOWAS court had ruled that it was wrong to raid women randomly on the streets.

Odinkalu subsequently called on the government to check the activities of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board.

He added, “This business of criminalising womanhood in Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, serves no policy or rational purpose. Even worse, it’s itself criminal. The people who do it seek to extort and abuse the women whom they abduct. They’re criminals.

“In addition to wilfully embarrassing Nigeria, there’s another reason we must #EndAEPBImpunity: they’re clearly lawless. Two years ago, ECOWAS Court of Justice determined that this kind of abduction of women from the streets of Abuja is unlawful

“Nigeria or some folks in its name seem to want to double down on or escalate the idea that it’s criminal to be a woman in Abuja. That must be resisted by all people of goodwill

“A lot of the conversation about the advocacy to #EndAEPBImpunity for the abduction of women from the streets and clubs of Abuja is based on the mistake that being a ‘prostitute’ is a crime and how a woman dresses can make her one. Both are unfounded and it’s necessary to debunk them.”

The 55- year old International School Ibadan has been shut with immediate effect .
The closure of the secondary school established in 1963 and owned by the University of Ibadan , followed the unprecedented appearance of some pupils who adorned hijab, against what the school ’ s management prescribed as the school dress code .
Consequently , the management ordered the school closed till further notice to ward off a any crisis.
Some parents under the aegis of International School Muslim Parents’ Forum, in a letter received on November 9 , 2018 and signed by one Abdurrhaman Balogun (chairman ) and Bilikis Badiru (secretary ) and sent to the principal of the school , Mrs . Phebean Olowe; and the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics Prof. Abideen Aderinto , stated that it wanted to “put the school management on notice of this resolution on the rights of our female children to commence the use of hijab from this academic session of 2018/ 2019 . ”
The forum argued that: “ Hijab wearing for young Muslim girls , apart from the fact that it is part of their religious belief , is part of their God given fundamental human right as well as the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria . ”

However , both school assembly and classes were cancelled when pupils wearing hijab were sighted on the school premises as early as 7 am .
Speaking on the development , the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic , Prof. Abideen Aderinto , who doubles as the Chairman Court of Governors of the school, stated that the “ jungle approach” being used by the parents would not be tolerated .
Aderinto , who said the school is a private school and not run with “ any kobo ” from government , stated that the school has rules governing dress codes , which all parents agreed to .
Aderinto explained that while he received the letter on the 9 th of November , he held a meeting with the forum on Saturday for more than two hours, adding that he was shocked and disappointed that the parents could be “ frustrating ” efforts of the management at restoring the glory of the school.
“I am the chairman of the Court of Governors and I am a proud Muslim .
“ International School Ibadan is a private school . UI does not fund it . It is funded by the fees collected. It is unfortunate that this is coming up now .
“ Even the Parents Teacher Association is not aware of the idea by this group . Indeed , some other Muslim parents expressed shock when they heard about this forum.
“ Since its establishment in 1963 , the school has not exprienced any religious crisis and we want to guide against it .
“ The Muslim and Christian students have a place to worship in the school . Whoever is desired to change the rules should go through the process .
“ The teachers do not feel safe and so could not have taught anybody , because it is a strange development .
“ I appeal to these people to stop their action and allow peace to reign in the school.
“ It is even strange that this matter was not discussed at the Parents Teachers Association headed by another Muslim and lawyer , Mr. Kazeem Olaniyan . ”
Balogun , who spoke for the International School Muslim Parents’ Forum, expressed surprise that the school was shut down because of female students who wore hijab to school , in line with their constitutional rights.
He maintained that the Forum would continue to forge ahead with their agitation until “ their daughters are allowed to wear hijabs . ”
