FCMB Group Plc has again demonstrated its resilience by reporting a profit before tax (PBT) of N16.2 billion for the full-year ended December 31, 2016, an increase of 109% compared to the N7.8billion for the same period in 2015. Profit after tax also rose by 69% to N15.2 billion as against N4.8 billion prior year. Following these, the financial institution has recommended a dividend of 10 kobo per share to shareholders. FCMB Group which is the holding company of First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited, FCMB Capital Markets Limited, CSL Stockbrokers Limited and CSL Trustees Limited, also reported a number of appreciable growths in key operating areas going by the audited results. Gross revenue as at the end of December 2016 was up by 16% to N176.3 billion from N152.5 billion in the previous year. This was in spite of the challenging macroeconomic environment and other regulatory factors. Non-interest income grew to N47.7 billion, an 86% Year-on-Year (YoY) increase, as against N25.6 billion in 2015. This was mainly driven by N29.3 billion in foreign exchange revaluation gains. Consistent with its value as a helpful financial institution committed to the growth of individual and business aspirations, the FCMB Group results showed an increase in credits advanced to customers last year. Loans and advances rose by 11% from N593 billion in 2015 to N660 billion in 2016, thereby improving the Group’s earning capacity. Total assets increased marginally by 1% from N1.16 trillion to N1.17trillion. In addition, operating expenses decreased by 2% to N65.8 billion, just as non-performing loans to total loans ratio declined from 4.2% in 2015 to 3.7% in 2016. The also Group maintained a robust capital base, with capital adequacy ratio of 18.1%, which is above the banking industry’s minimum ratio of 15%. However, customer deposits reduced to N658 billion from N700 billion. First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited, the flagship of FCMB Group Plc and the commercial and retail banking arm of the holding company, continues to improve the soundness of its balance sheet, credit standing and other indices of performance. The financial results show that the bank’s net interest income grew by 9% (YoY) from N62.8 billion to N68.6 billion. This was on account of a 7% reduction in the Bank’s interest expense. source: http://inforistic.com/fcmbs-profit-rises-109-n16-2bn-2016-declares-10k-dividend/

A shot fired by an unidentified policeman attached to Police Area Command, Idi-Ape Ibadan, on Monday hit one of the eyes of a man identified as Mr Yomi Olaitan, around Oje market, Agodi Gate road, Ibadan. It was gathered that the victim and other occupants of the car, including his younger brother, were coming from Agodi Gate when the incident happened. It was further learnt that Mr Olaitan who was driving a brown Honda Accord car behind a truck, was hit in the right eye as his brown Ankara top was soaked with blood. Sources also informed that the truck driver was engaged in a hot argument, allegedly related with money issues, with the police officers. The driver of the truck reportedly refused to play ball, the insistence said to have led to a prolonged argument and subsequent shooting by one of the policemen. The gunshot scared people around the vicinity, as they scampered for safety, especially when they noticed the blood stain on a victim. Olaitan and other two occupants had reportedly waited to allow the truck driver sort himself out with the police team but that was not to be as he landed in the hospital. The younger brother of the victim, who was in the car with his son, immediately stopped one of the officers from escaping from the scene. Olaitan’s brother, sources informed, also collapsed in the process of dragging the issue with the police officers. He was however revived by good-spirited people as he joined his brother, while being taken to the hospital. It was learnt that the victim was initially rushed to Molly Hospital, Idi Ape, where he received first aid treatment before he was again rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan and admitted at West 1 private ward. As at the time of filing this report, Mr Olaitan was being prepared for surgery, though it was gathered from family sources that his brain was not affected. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Oyo State Police Command, SP Adekunle Ajisebutu confirmed the incident but was quick to add that it was unintentional. He said: “Some policemen were responding to a distress call when the incident happened. A truck driver had abducted an FRSC staff who wanted to arrest an offending driver who drove recklessly and dangerously, thereby causing an accident which affected three vehicles at Iwo Road by Mr Bigg’s area. The erring driver took the FRSC staff to an unknown destination but was accosted at Oje area by some policemen who attempted to rescue the abducted FRSC official. In order to demobilise the truck, the police shot at the tyre and succeeded in rescuing the victim. A bullet ricochetted and hit the victim. Victim was rushed to UCH for medical treatment and is responding to treatment.” One of the cars hit by the erring driver is in police custody. Witnesses/complainants made statements to the police while the offending driver and his vehicle are also in our custody. The incident had nothing to do with extortion. The abducted, injured FRSC official whose endangered life the police were trying to save was admitted at the hospital, treated and later discharged.” Source: http://www.larinkablog.com/2016/12/man-eye-hit-by-policemans-stray-bullet.html?m=1

The immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, has advised his successor, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to avoid engaging in acts that could bring any past occupant of that office to public ridicule. This is coming after Idris accused Arase that he took away 24 police vehicles while leaving office in June as the IG. In a reply dated December 1, 2016, Arase pointed out that he desisted from ridiculing the last two IGs before him even though he knew that they each went away with 13 and nine police vehicles respectively when leaving office. That it was for this reason that while he was in office, he ensured that Force Order 295 was put in place to protect ex-IGs from being demeaned. The former IGs, which Arase referred to, are Mohammed Abubakar, who retired in 2014 and Suleiman Abba, who was sacked in April last year by former President Goodluck Jonathan. Arase had earlier dismissed his successor's allegations that he left with two dozens of vehicles while leaving office, wondering what he would do with such number of vehicles. Arase said rather than denigrate Abba, who he succeeded, he indeed initiated actions and bought a brand new bulletproof jeep for the sacked IG despite the fact that Abba’s administration left a debt of N28bn for him to contend with. He urged Idris to put the integrity and honour of the Nigeria Police Force first in any action he might want to take so that the force would not be exposed to public ridicule. Arase said, “I expect that former occupants of the office of the Inspector-General of Police should not be demeaned. This explains why Force Order 295 was emplaced by the force management under my leadership as acknowledged in your letter in reference. “In spite of the emplacement of this order and despite the fact that my two immediate predecessors left office with 13 and nine vehicles of different makes and models respectively, I never pressurised either of them to return any of such vehicles neither did I engage in any act that was capable of bringing them to ridicule as being done to me of late by a force I dedicated my life to serving up to the highest level. “Rather, it is on record that I went the extra mile to source for funds and initiated actions towards purchasing a brand new bulletproof jeep for my immediate predecessor, even after his retirement from service. This was done notwithstanding the fact that I inherited and had to manage a huge debt profile of about N28bn, which limited the financial base of the force at the time.” Among the 13 vehicles, which Arase said Abubakar took away were a BMW (7 series) bulletproof car; and two Toyota Land Cruiser V8 bulletproof jeeps. According to him, Abba also took away a Toyota Land Cruiser bulletproof jeep and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado jeep along with seven other vehicles. Arase said God had blessed him so much and he was contended to the point that he would willingly surrender “all my vehicular entitlements even as contained in the Revised Force Order 295 in the overriding interest of the force and in the sustenance of the legacy of comradeship between an incumbent IGP and his predecessor.” He said he decided to delay in returning the vehicles, which Idris alleged he took away, as a form of protest against the “unfair, untidy and demeaning approach the matter was handled until now.” Arase, however, said he harboured no animosity towards Idris and encouraged him to feel free to approach him for advice, just as his predecessors did to him. Nduka who hailed from Oguta Local Government Area of
Imo State was supposed to have his wedding on
December 27, 2016.
An eyewitness told Punch correspondent that Nduka got
into in a serious argument with one of the pump
attendants over his missing iPhone 7.
He said the argument degenerated into a fight and
Nduka, inflicted injuries on the attendant.
The witness said the manager of the station, Mrs. Ruth
Enemmuo, who is now in police detention, intervened,
adding that as soon as Nduka entered into his car, the
police inspector, Mike Edem, who was on duty at the
station fired, killing him instantly.
It was learnt that the inspector fled the area and had not
been seen.
The manager later went to the police station to report
the killing, but was detained immediately.
A human rights lawyer and counsel to the detained NNPC
manager, Kissinger Ikeokwu, said there was no reason
for the police to detain the NNPC station manager.
“Now, the police are saying that my client should
produce their own fleeing officer,” he added.
The woman, who spoke to Punch correspondent from her
cell, said all the station’s attendants, including the one
that had an altercation with the deceased, were on the
run.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew
Enwerem, confirmed the incident and described the
inspector as unruly.
Enwerem stated that the Inspector-General of Police had
mandated the Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, to
apprehend the fleeing inspector. http://www.larinkablog.com/2016/12/policeman-kills-man-five-days-to.html?m=1
