Health officials have gotten a breakthrough in the cure for Ebola following results from a clinical trial of two therapies made from Ebola antibodies.

Four Ebola drugs was administered to patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo where there is a major outbreak of the virus, but two showed that 90% of infected people can survive if treated early.

The therapies that have improved survival rates are REGN-EB3, a cocktail of three monoclonal Ebola antibodies made by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN), and mAb114, a single monoclonal antibody developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health. Patients who were receiving two other drugs that are being discontinued, Zmapp and remdesivir, will now have the option at the discretion of their treating physician to receive the treatments that have been shown to work.

"REGN-EB3 and mAb114 are the first drugs that, in a scientifically sound study, have clearly shown a significant diminution in mortality for people with Ebola virus disease," Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told AFP.

“It means that we do have now what looks like treatments for a disease which not too long ago we really had no therapeutic approach at all,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIAID.

“We feel that with agents such as these … that we may be able to improve the survival of people with Ebola and … might even make people more enthusiastic about coming for care.

“Because when you have something to offer an individual, it makes it much more likely that you might get to them early. And the earlier the better, as in any disease" he added.

The trial was conducted by an international research group co-ordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and it began in November last year. The four experimental drugs were tested on 700 patients, with results from the first 499 now known.

Of the patients given the two more effective drugs, 29% on REGN-EB3 and 34% on mAb114 died, NIAID said. In contrast, 49% on ZMapp and 53% on Remdesivir died in the study, the agency said. The survival rate among patients with low levels of the virus in their blood was as high as 94% when they were given REGN-EB3, and 89% when on mAb114, the agency said.

The findings mean health authorities can "stress to people that more than 90% of people survive" if they are treated early, said Sabue Mulangu, an infectious-disease researcher who worked on the trial.

With the breakthrough in the trial, it means Ebola may soon be a "preventable and treatable" disease.

Matilda Duncan has reacted to Federal Government's threat of making Tekno a scapegoat to send strong signals of intolerance to 'nonsense and immorality', following the viral video in which he was spotted dancing with semi-naked ladies in Lekki area of Lagos.

HiTNG reported earlier that the Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Segun Runsewe expressed disappointment that the Cartel Music boss released the music video which sparked controversy while being shot. He further said they are going to inform security agencies to place him on their watch list, because his action is a threat to national security and a bad influence on Nigerian youths.

However Matilda Duncan fired back at the Federal Government over claims of Tekno's action being a threat to national security. The media personality who pointed out that the ladies wore bikinis and were not nude as insinuated, further questioned the priorities of the country.

At least 37 people have been killed amid fresh inter-communal clashes in northeast Chad between farmers and camel herders.

President Idriss Deby Itno while speaking to reporters in the capital N’Djamena said inter-communal conflict had become a “national concern”.

“Three days ago, 37 Chadians were killed in Ouaddai [region] as a result of inter-communal conflicts,” he said. In May, dozens of people were killed and wounded amid clashes in the country’s eastern Sila province between Arab herders and Ouaddai farmers, according to Chadian news reports. Ouaddai is a strategic region located on the borders with Sudan.

Over the past few years, a tree called moringa (Moringa oleifera) has drawn major attention as a nutrient-packed superfood.

An attack launched by bandits at the residence of a district head in Sokoto State left one person dead and another kidnapped as confirmed by the Police.

The Sokoto State Police Command revealed that one Maude Salisu was arrested over the incident and also identified the killed palace guard as Usman Muhammadu. The state's Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Kaoje told newsmen;

“Armed men numbering about seven invaded the residence of the District Head of Gidan Bubu village in Wamakko LGA Sokoto, one Alhaji Muhammadu Gidado, shooting sporadically.

“They kidnapped Alhaji Sani Ardo, the younger brother of the district head; his wife, Hauwa’u Sani and one other were beaten and they dispossessed her of her Tecno GSM handset.”

Mr Kaoje disclosed that the kidnapped district head's brother was released after a N3m ransom was paid to the bandits.

“During the course of investigation one Maude Salisu was arrested and the Tecno GSM handset belonging to Hauwa’u Sani with the sum of four hundred and seventeen thousand and thirty naira (N417, 030) suspected to be his share of the ransom was recovered in his possession,” Kaoje stated.

Maude confessed to the crime and is reportedly helping detectives in tracking his gang members.
