I run a small business myself with a board of directors of 5 and hold 65% of total shares and i know for sure that finance isn't necessarily equivalent to success. Without doubt, the YOUWIN project won't succeed because the vision behind it is limited. In developed countries there are Incubators that help nuture your idea prior to seeking further investment if viable. YOUWIN should rather focus on platforms to support and encourage the establishment of numerous Incubators across the entire country and not directly investing in ideas. By doing this, we will have numerous Incubators which breeds competition and most of all more ideas will have finance, experience, knowledge and passion invested in them.

If i may ask the board members at YOUWIN are paid salaries (national cake), people would gladly do this freely which will free up more funds to establish a system that can last centuries.

Well, enough said on this, Google is here to provide a service and get paid for it. This is at the expense of our own development and loss reduced opportunity for the IT geeks.

For those asking the indigenous IT developers to get creative, if you have ever established a business you should how important advertising is and it doesn't come cheap. No way will any local business will be able to compete with Google's advertisement budget, it is just impossible. It is important to know that ever great idea needs massive publicity as well before it can be successful.

It's obvious we lack common interest here, a drive around the city is another evidence of our lack of unity and common goals.

Online advertising portals like Nairalist and Google Trader are sustained by huge budgets. You need to put money in online ads, email etc to drive people to the site and make sure they return. So I can see why Google with it's cash flow can compete effectively in this space.

Online forums on the other hand are audience driven. Once people love the forum they always return. So Nairaland with over 800K users, generating thousands of discussion threads should be ok. Besides, the threat of competition should keep Nailraland on it's toes and drive innovation. Good news I believe for users like you and I.

Forums are content driven, no doubt about that. You need to look at accessibility because i spend more hours on a Google web product than i do on Nairaland, the implication of this is that whenever content is shared on the assumed/foreseen Google Forum most of us will are only a click away.We all(at least most) have either Yahoo or Gmail and they will use this to their advantage and many more. Haven't you noticed the ads bar on the recently upgraded gmail, you really don't need to look further.

And for those saying our local businesses should compete, i've got a question. It is just like saying Enyimba should compete with Manchester City for the best players and in a competition.

Facebook is the No.1 website in Nigeria and Google is just making sure that it kills Facebook's expansion in Nigeria by taking over almost every part of our "loca Nigerian Internet." They are doing the job really well at the moment. No problem, we will just jump on the Google bus and see how we can become the driver instead of hapless passengers.

Google's main business is Search and this is one attempt to ensure more businesses and consumers are using the web. Nigeria provides a unique opportunity for online business to thrive - very young demographic and huge population. Also online usage continues to grow every year. Makes sense for Google or other business to have a presence in this huge market.  

In terms of impact on Nigerian web designers; well the web is rapidly evolving and people need to adapt. Right now, any small business owner can set up a web presence for less than $150 without a web designer. You can build your own website in couple of hours and start promoting your business. So web designers should think about doing web marketing and strategic planning or focus on contract work with big corporations. There's huge career/business opportunities in the digital and online space than simply designing websites.  

Overall, this Google move can be a huge benefit for small business owners if people see the bigger picture. In fact, any small business owner without a website is Leaving money on the table for competitors.

Not correct. Google had issues with the Chinese government over censorship. The Chinese government wanted Google to censor content in the local version of it's search engine.

Well, they needed a way reduce their market share and that was achieved. The censorship issue was just the means to achieve that end. The bottom line is that our citizens and businesses loose more and make starting a business a more difficult in region with little or no incubators, agent investors and bank support.

In China, Google had issues simply because the Chinese government realized the dominance of google will make it impossible for her citizens(local businesses) to compete.

The bulk of their(Google) profit heads back to the US meaning we are literally contributing to the growth of their economy and killing ours. The most popular website in China is Baidu.com(a serch engine), google is fifth and Facebook isn't even in top 100. This is a brave move from the Governor and I'm in total support of it 100%. People give blinded and ask less questions about the effect on the society. The continuous giving to these beggars increases their numbers and make them less productive to the society.
