- Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will pay an official visit to Edo state on Tuesday, August 29 - Osinbajo will inaugurate a 60,000 metric tonnes-capacity fertilizer plant in Auchi - The Edo state-owned fertilizer plant was rehabilitated to boost farming nationwide All is set for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s visit to Edo on Tuesday to inaugurate a 60,000 metric tonnes-capacity fertilizer plant in Auchi, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. Alhaji Sadiq Kassim, spokesman of Wacot, the company managing the plant, told NAN on Monday in Auchi that the plant would create about 500 direct jobs for people in the area. He said that the Edo state-owned fertilizer plant was rehabilitated by Wacot under the presidential fertilizer initiative to boost farming nationwide. “The plant will provide immediate 500 direct jobs to indigenes of Edo State as soon as the Vice President commissions it tomorrow. “We are managing the plant under a long term lease with Edo government,” he said. Kassim did not disclose the company’s financial involvement. “All I can say is that we plan extension of the project in few years to scale up the capacity and turnout which will be in billions of naira,” he said. He commended the people of the community whom he described as “very homely and accommodating` “Our relationship with the host community is absolutely fantastic. We have made extensive contact with the people who are grassroots farmers; they are homely and very accommodating towards us,” he said. NAN reports that Gov. Godwin Obaseki had, during a visit to the site of the plant in January, expressed optimism that the plant would become functional this year. The Edo Fertilizer Company, Auchi, had remained dormant since it was commissioned during Lucky Igbinedion administration on March 22, 2003. had reported that Dr Junaid Mohammed said Professor Yemi Osinbajo did not perform up to expectation as acting president while also insisting that the north has been marginalised. In an interview with Vanguard, the second republic lawmaker said Osinbajo was probably under the influence of cabal who were trying to direct his affairs. |

- Police arrest a 26-year-old man, Chukwuemeka Okafor, for allegedly trying to eliminate his father, two siblings and five of his friends with a charm - The suspect was arrested following information made available to the police by a vigilant resident of the community - The Anambra state commissioner of police, Mr Garba Umar says the suspect would be charged to court after investigation The police in Anambra have arrested a 26- year-old man, Chukwuemeka Okafor, for allegedly attempting to use his father, two siblings and five friends for money ritual. The suspect, who hailed from Ifite-Awka in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra, was arrested following information made available to the police by a vigilant resident of the community, The News Agency of Nigeria reports (NAN). The commissioner of police in the state, Mr. Garba Umar, who briefed newsmen in Amawbia on Thursday on the arrest of the suspect, said the father had innocently provided N100, 000 to his son unknown to him that the son had a devilish intention. Umar said that the suspect lied to his father about a business which made him raise the money for him believing that it was a genuine venture. He further said that after collecting the money, the suspect proceeded to the house of a native doctor to prepare a charm that would enable him to eliminate his father, two siblings and five of his friends. He said that the suspect had confessed to the crime, and was assisting the police with useful information for further investigation. The commissioner said the suspect would be charged to court after investigation. He listed the items recovered from the suspect to include; eight photographs of the victims, including three members of the family and pictures of his five face book friends as well as the sum of N100,000. The suspect told newsmen that he collected the N100, 000 from his father under the pretence that he would use the money to set up a business. Okafor told reporters that he was roped into the act after he was defrauded of N400,000 by one of his friends who promised to take him to Dubai. “Amidst these frustrations, I sought the assistance of one Zaki who is very influential in the society and he told me that he made his money through money ritual. “He encouraged me to join him in the ritual act after revealing the secret,” he said. Okafor said he was warned not to reveal the secrets of the ritual to anybody otherwise his life would be terminated. He regretted that he had no intention to join the evil act, but that he was pushed into it by the devil, adding that he got the picture of his friends from their Facebook walls. In a another incident, the Rivers state command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is reportedly battling to crack the puzzle concerning how Ifeanyichukwu Dike, the 23- year-old undergraduate accused of ritual murder, escaped from detention. Dike was paraded recently for allegedly killing Victory Chikamso, a neighbour’s daughter and removing vital organs from her body for ritual purposes. He was caught and handed over to the police whose officers paraded him and made him confess. The Sun reports that Dike’s reported escape is currently causing anger with some women gearing up for what could become a mass protest. What a son He his |
- The non-payment of pensioners have become a re-occurring issue in government circles - Successive governments have failed to address the issue once and for all - The present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is not left out in the perennial problem Pensioners, under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has accused the minister of labour, Dr Chris Ngige of nepotism and incompetence. Specifically, the NUP declared that Ngige was using his position to circumvent the trade union and pension laws to favour his kinsmen. The fortunes of pensioners haven't changed under President Buhari. Photo credit: Aso Rock Briefing the press at the Labour House, Abuja, the chairman, Electricity Sector branch of the NUP, Mr Abel Olas Eikhor, accused the minister of directing the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorates (PTAD) to circumvent the law and pay union dues into the account of an individual who is not a member of the union. The union stated that rather than address the issues of a petition written against a former chairman, Temple Ubani, the minister who should be conversant with the provisions of the law asked PTAD to pay check off dues deducted from the union members to Ubani even when Ubani was no longer a member of the union, having formed his own association. He pointed out that in total disregard to the provisions of the Trade Union Act, the minister has directed the PTAD to remit union dues of members of the union to the accounts of Chief Ubani. “Mr President should save his prestige as well as that of Nigeria from an ineptitude that is associated with the office of minister of labour and productivity. “Technocrats who know what the ministry is all about should be shopped for immediate replace of the medical Doctor that was appointed on compensation basis. “Ngige should be relieved of his duties now to avert this ugly scenario that has consistently played out since he assumed office,” he said. Meanwhile, the federal government has unveiled a panel given a mandate to review and recommend a new minimum wage. The agitation for the review of the current minimum wage has been on the front burner of discussion among labour leaders in the last few months. Imagine |
