CultureThe Story Of Alaafin Ajagbo by honifome(op):
Alaafin Ajagbo who succeeded Obalokun was remarkable for a long reign. He was said to have reigned 140 years and is an exception to the recent rule.He was born a twin and so striking was the resemblance between himself and his brother Ajampati that the one was often mistaken for the other, and very often royal honours were paid to the latter as to his brother.Ajagbo was also a warlike prince: several expeditions were sent out by him. Alaafin Ajagbo had the foresight to organize and build the system of military which gave great contributions to the civilization of the world.Alaafin Ajagbo instituted the military title of Generalissimo of the Yoruba Army, -the Aare Ona Kakanfo. Alaafin Ajagbo developed a system of government which was quoted as having contributed to human civilization and this gave Yoruba's a pride of place in the comity of Nations. He was the first to introduce a military formation that saw the emergence of the Generalissimo of the Yoruba forces. When he appointed his friend Kokorogangan of Iwoye who was a military strategist as the first Aare Ona Kakanfo, that is the Generalissimo of Yoruba Army.He created seventy ranks in the Yoruba military formation; Sixteen in the Upper division and Fifty-four in the Lower Cadre.Alaafin Ajagbo also introduced the Cabinet system in about 1640 into the constitution of the Yoruba. The watershed of this ingenious constitutional device was the introduction of the famous checks and balances that clearly delimited the functional interrelationships between the various agencies of the government. This was one century (100 years) ahead of the British before Robert Walpole started the cabinet system in Britain in 1740 during the Hanoverian dynasty. In external relations, the Alaafin extended the Yoruba territorial frontier outside the border of the present boundary of Nigeria. The influence of Oyo's language and culture extended into the Togo land and far beyond into Dahomey 1698, Oyo controlled coastal trades using the King of Allada to handle European shippers. When Dahomey ravaged Weme, a small state in the North-East of Allada, the kung andhis sons fled to Oyo for refuge.Consequently, Oyo invaded Dahomey in 1730 and subdued Dahomey. There were two other Oyo invasions and bombardments of Dahomey between 1738 and 1747 following which Dahomey capitulated and accepted the suzerainty of Oyo and paid annual tributes of 40 oxen and considerable merchandise to the Alaafin. In diplomacy, art of government and royal court etiquettes, the palace of Oyo became the State House of the Yoruba Nation; the citadel of authentic African culture, where Yoruba Princes and Princesses and Heir apparent from other YorubaStates were groomed and nurtured in the intrinsic values of Yoruba customary usage. Hence, the verified truism in the Yoruba saying that "Ajise bii Oyo laari, Oyo kii se bii eni kokan" - that is Oyo is the pace setter.Indeed, in the middle of the nineteenth century, an American observer, Reverend T. J. Bowen, remarked about the methodof preventing absolutism as devised by the Yoruba, particularly in Oyo area. According to him, "The highest excellence of the best government among white consists in constitutional checks or limits to prevent abuses of power. Strange as it may seem, the Central Africans ( I.e Yoruba people) had studied out this balance of power and reduced it to practice, long before our fathers settled in America-before the Barons of England had exhorted the greater charter from King John."Commenting on the same issue, Professor Saburi Biobaku said: "Oyo, the greatest of the Yoruba States, exercised imperial suzerainty over some neighbouring states and at its apogee in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, maintained a pax in the area which enabled trade to flourish and certain measure of civilization to develop. The Yoruba States craft was best displayed at Oyo.These are remarkable feats performed by the Oyo's as their contributions to world civilization which have remained unsurpassed till today. This is a well documented fact of history dating back to almost four centuries (400 years ) ago. Extract from https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C6514965894

ALASE EKEJI ORISA(second in command to

OBA TI N FOBA JE(the king that crown kings)

from alaafin of oyo eulogies.
At the peak of oyo empire, yoruba glory was at its
acme, oyo dominates political leadership of the
entire yoruba kingdoms, our unity was like
collection of brooms tied together to do the
sweeping,the empire created strong defence
tactics against the neigbouring enemies and
were forced to pay tributes at oyos will in those
days.Alaafin of oyo confirmed the appointments
of prominent obas such as alake of
egbaland,osile oke ona,olowu of owu,onisabe of
sabe, alaketu of ketu, owa obokun of ijesha land
etc before their independence conquests.Alaafin
approved the establishment of other thrones such
as awujale of ijebuland,soun of
ogbomoso, olubadan of ibadan, timi of ede etc.
Oyo dynasty designed prominent military rulers
for yoruba such as bashorun and aare ona
kakanfo.Alaafin has the final say on disputes
between obas and other other yoruba
kingdoms.oyo conquest expanded yoruba land
greatly at the peak of the empire.ile ife was
recognise as cradle and sacred place for
yoruba.Hence it's duty of oyo to protect ife from
attack and no oba was recognized by alaafin but
the chief priest called ooni.
Ooni is a title derived from oonirisa which means the priest. Oduduwa being the first Ooni had seven sons of which oranyan (oyo empire builder) was the lastborn. At old age, it was his servant Obalufon that took care of him and worked on his behalf because his son had left ife to establish their kingdoms. When the progenitor died, Obalufon took over and his duties was simply spiritual in a sacred place -ile ife- of which oduduwa sons allowed him to continue since it was impossible for them to leave their domains and rule in ife. They labelled him arole oduduwa meaning oduduwa house anchor but his hierachy cannot superseed the seven sons and that is one of the reasons owa obokun of ijesha ( one of oduduwa sons) will not relinquish power to the new ooni in osun state traditional rulers council.
I support his unity moves but if he knows his limit among yoruba obas, he will succeed.

Before Ojukwu died, he said that biafra can be achieved in the mind not physically meaning he bowed to sovereignity of our dear nation. your protests would have been justified had you change the theme to challenges facing the south east. Let me ask these questions. What is your master plan for the proposed country?what do you have to say about niger delta ethnic nationalities who recently denounce biafra?does secession means a path to true governance taking south sudan from sudan and pakistan from india as a case study?will Nnamdi Kanu and other biafra leaders fight and commit suicide after being defeated unlike Ojukwu who couldn't act in Hitler way after the defeat by the allies in world war 2? why the tribal bashings because of your ambition despite the fact that no ethnic groups or civil societies outside your proposed domian has come out openly to condemn your ambition? Biafra is by selfish people, to the selfish people and for the selfish people .Though our 1914 amalgamation is unholy but whoever wants to divorce has the spirit of hatred and self centeredness because a couple that forcefully marry for over hundred years ought to have binded love like a glue in the stamp. In my candid opinion, your agitation is caused by perceived marginalisation in appointments. Yoruba outsmarted you in the last election because the southwest was marginalised throughout Jonathans administration even though they voted for him and supported him during yaradua saga and we never call for secession but complained of marginalisation which fell on deaf ears. So we went to polls and voted him out in collaboration with the north against your wish. You should have complained of your percieved marginalisation which is not worst compared to goodluck administration against yoruba and vote buhari out if your complaints fell on deaf ears rather you resorted to wake up dead biafra which seems like you are building castle in the air.

I like gov Ajimobi. To him, stomach infrastructure is creating employment for unemloyed youths. Ekiti people are being enticed, instead of them to demand fishing gears and nets from fayose, they have resorted to open their watery mouth for stone fish from their gov.Due to their laziness, the state has become the least developed in southwest. iwonbaoko: 1.Factually.
I do not agree that Alaafin approved establishment of Awujale of "Ijebuland" . In reality the word "land" is not Yoruba and there is no such thing as a "de facto" Ijebuland any more than there is a Yorubaland. Those eulogies are used for other Obas as well
2. Everything you say about the "authority" of the Alaafin stems from force or capacity for violence in a particular era. So to talk of superiority is like talking about superiority between Abacha and Babangida. Neither of them had any right to rule and there is no historical, canonical or spiritual basis for Oyo supremacy FOR ALL TIME. Empires come and empires go.Once the Romans ruled the world or most of it as did the British and now the Americans. In short the man with the biggest sword or gun in any era is king.
In all likelihood Ibadan which is a baby, historically speaking, was a bigger force at the time of colonization and was poised to be the dominat force in the area.

More important is the word "Yoruba". That word means a very different thing today from what it meant during the Oyo empire. The very fact that Oyo is considered "empire" tells the whole story. Ijebus,Egbas,Ekitis,Ondos etc were NOT Yoruba Yes they considered themselves Omo Odua and spoke mutually intelligible languages but then so did the biblical Israelites(in relation to Abraham) and many of their neighbours with whom they had endless wars. Often it is a mistake to assume that because peoples speak a language and have similar customs they are one. Much of Northern Nigeria today speaks Hausa and are Muslims but that is the purpose and intention of empire and colonization.

In my life I have encountered Ekiti and Ijebu people(now deceased) who would specifically refer to Ara Oke as (Yoruba) They would never refer to themselves as such nor even to their language. Nigeria and its prevailing context has created the need for a "Yoruba" nation and no doubt this has utility but the idea that we all share in the Yoruba glory of Oyo is funny. In fact at the very moment when Oyo were having problems in Ilorin other "Yoruba" nations saw that as an opportunity to attack Oyo.
To my mind The Oyo people are very distinct from the Ondo Ekiti and Ijebus. They were more of a colonizing force than a fraternal one. These peoples have other less illustrious origins/stories that have been airbrushed from the official story
.Well I may not be able to convice you on alaafin position pertaining to Awujale throne establishment since there are several versions of ijebu history. The name Yoruba was christened by people outside northern fringes of oyo empire and that doesn't exclude other oodua people. When oyo dominated the colonial force in yorubaland, our fathers should not have hurried for rebellion because of waiting infiltration of yoruba enemies rather, they resorted to fighting oyo for independence, and the war continues even during british scrabble. They could not resist british colonialisation due to disunity among them which could have given us a chance to be a nation like the ashante did either victorious or not.As for me,I prefer Oyo colonisation to the modern slavery of yoruba people in Nigeria.

Now, get educated>>> Ilorin city was Founded
in the late 18th century by Yoruba people, it
became the capital of a kingdom that was a
vassal state of the Oyo Empire. Oyo’s
commander at Ilorin, Kakanfo (Field Marshal)
Afonja, led a rebellion against Oyo in 1817 that destroyed
the unity of the empire. He was aided by
Mallam Alimi (a Fulani from Sokoto), by Fulani
warriors and slaves, and by Hausa slaves.
Afonja was increasingly dominated by the
Muslim Fulani in number , and was soon assassinated, upon his assassination,
Alimi’s son, Abd as-Salam (Abdul Salami),
became emir of Ilorin and pledged allegiance to the Sokoto caliphate.
So, as u can see, it was an act of betrayal Where the people he called to assist him in fighting his people at Oyo turned to his back and stabbed him after a failure to make in road into Yorubaland. You know nada bout ilorin's history nd it's so annoying when people like u claim to know.

silent don: You are really ignorant of ur history. You as a result don't know Where ur coming from and thus can't know Where you're going to.

No external foe ever defeated Yoruba in any war. Afonja was a Yoruba who Alimi betrayed and killed to take over rulership of Ilorin.

Ilorin is a Yoruba town, with typical Yoruba people inhabiting it but an illegal rulership who came in ruthlessly because of the rebellion of a Yoruba son (Afonja) and who must leave, albeit ruthlessly because of the illumination, anger and determination of the new generation Yoruba sons.

I've been so close to the rulership of this city even as a very young boy.

I was well aware when the emir and his irks packed their baggage and were set to flee Ilorin if Lawal wins the gubernatorial election IN THE DAYS OF LAWAL. IF NOT FOR SARAKI THAT SAW LAWAL DIE, THE STORY WOULD HV BN DIFFERENT.

WELL, THE D-DAY WAS ONLY POSTPONED.
ilorin people are cowards, they could not defeat the fulanis.Their forefathers folded arm and watched the fulani taking over government. They expected yoruba counterparts to pursue the fulanis which is not possible because Afonja had declared independece against oyo.I challenge you,I might be more knowledgeable of your town history than you.
