Timo Werner has completed a permanent transfer to RB Leipzig, returning to Germany after two seasons with Chelsea.
The forward is heading back to the club where he enjoyed four successful years before moving to west London, departing Stamford Bridge for his homeland as a European and world champion.
The Champions League triumph in Porto represents the highlight of his time with the Blues and he played his part in our success during his first season in England. Nobody matched his tallies of 12 goals or 15 assists in all competitions, while only Mason Mount made more appearances for Chelsea in 2020/21.
Werner’s first goal for the club arrived in his fourth game – a sharp turn and finish against London rivals Tottenham – starting a run of eight goals in nine games, including four across two big Champions League wins over Krasnodar and Rennes.
He could not continue that high-scoring form over the winter after a switch to the wing, although matters did pick up again later in the season following the arrival of fellow German Thomas Tuchel as head coach, making some crucial contributions in the closing stages of the campaign, even if he did not return to those prolific early heights.
He set up winning goals against Manchester City and Leicester City in the Premier League, which turned out to be vital in securing a top-four finish, as well as providing the assist for Hakim Ziyech’s goal in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City to book our place in the final.
His performances over the two legs of the Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid were among his best in a Chelsea shirt, providing our outlet on the counter-attack and opening the scoring in the second game, before starting the win over Manchester City in the final itself.
Further silverware followed in 2021/22, as Werner began in our shoot-out victory over Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup to open the season and came off the bench as we beat Palmeiras in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup, securing that trophy for the first time in our history.
He had made another strong start to the season, featuring in nine of our first 12 matches and scoring to give us a late lead over Southampton in the Premier League. The German’s campaign was interrupted by a hamstring injury, but after a month out he scored on his return in a 4-0 Champions League win against Juventus.
That was one of four goals he scored in the Champions League in 2021/22, a tally which also included Chelsea’s quickest ever in the competition, when he found the net after one minute and 23 seconds against Zenit St Petersburg.
A season of ups and downs, interrupted again by a spell out with Covid, briefly sparked to life in April with four goals in as many games – a Premier League brace in a 6-0 win at Southampton followed by another strike against Real Madrid before scoring in defeat to Arsenal, although that would be the last time he found the net for the Blues.
In total, Werner’s two years at Chelsea come to an end with him having made 89 appearances for the club, scoring 23 goals.

China said Friday it was ending cooperation with the United States on a litany of key issues including climate change, anti-drug efforts and military talks, as relations between the two superpowers nosedive over the island of Taiwan.
Beijing has reacted furiously to a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island, which it claims as its territory and has vowed to retake, by force if necessary.
It has since Thursday encircled the self-ruled, democratic island with a series of huge military drills that have been roundly condemned by the United States and other Western allies.
And Friday saw its foreign ministry hit back further against the United States, suspending talks and cooperation on multiple agreements between the two -- including on fighting climate change.
The world's two largest polluters last year pledged to work together to accelerate climate action this decade, and vowed to meet regularly to "address the climate crisis".
But that deal looks shaky as relations sink to some of their lowest levels in years, as do agreements on everything from talks on military matters to anti-drug cooperation.
Pelosi -- who was also hit with sanctions by Beijing for the visit -- has defended her trip to Taiwan, saying Friday that Washington would "not allow" China to isolate the island.
Taiwan has also condemned Beijing's furious response to the visit, with premier Su Tseng-chang calling for allies to push for de-escalation.
"(We) didn't expect that the evil neighbour next door would show off its power at our door and arbitrarily jeopardise the busiest waterways in the world with its military exercises," he told reporters.
'Our motherland is powerful' Beijing has said its military exercises will continue until midday Sunday, and Taipei reported that Chinese fighter jets and ships crossed the "median line" that runs down the Taiwan Strait on Friday morning.
"As of 11 am, multiple batches of Chinese warplanes and warships conducted exercises around the Taiwan Strait and crossed the median line of the strait," Taipei's defence ministry said in a statement.
AFP journalists on the Chinese island of Pingtan saw a fighter jet flying overhead, prompting tourists to snap photos as it flew along the coast.
A Chinese military vessel was also visible sailing through the Taiwan Strait, they added.
China's drills involved a "conventional missile firepower assault" in waters to the east of Taiwan, the Chinese military said.
And state broadcaster CCTV reported that Chinese missiles had flown directly over Taiwan -- a major escalation if officially confirmed.
On the Chinese island of Pingtan, local tourists proudly extolled their country's military might against its much smaller neighbour.
"Our motherland is powerful. We are not afraid of having war with Taiwan, the US or any country in the world," Liu, a 40-year-old tourist from Zhejiang province, told AFP.
"We hope to unify Taiwan soon. We are not scared of anyone," he added.
"Our country is powerful. We don't want to start a war, but we are not afraid of others."
'Significant escalation' China's ruling Communist Party views Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to one day take it, by force if necessary.
But the scale and intensity of the drills have triggered outrage in the United States and other democracies.
"These provocative actions are a significant escalation," Blinken said after talks with Southeast Asian foreign ministers in Phnom Penh.
"The fact is, the speaker's visit was peaceful. There is no justification for this extreme, disproportionate and escalatory military response," he added.
Japan lodged a formal diplomatic complaint against Beijing, with five of China's missiles believed to have landed in its exclusive economic zone.
And Australia -- which has a troubled relationship with China, its largest trading partner -- condemned the drills as "disproportionate and destabilising".

China declared it would conduct missile tests and military drills around Taiwan shortly after US House speaker Nancy Pelosi defied Beijing on Tuesday by landing on the island.
The People’s Liberation Army said it would stage a series of military drills including “long-range live firing in the Taiwan Strait” from Tuesday evening.
“This action is targeted at the US’s shocking recent major escalation on the Taiwan issue, and serves as a serious warning to Taiwanese independence forces or those seeking independence,” Shi Yi, a spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command, said in a statement.
Separately, the official Xinhua News Agency announced military drills would take place from Aug. 4-7 in six areas that encircle Taiwan, giving coordinates for the exercises. “For safety reasons, relevant ships and aircraft should not enter the above sea areas and airspaces during this period,” Xinhua added.
Pelosi became the highest-ranking American politician to visit the island in 25 years when her military aircraft arrived at Songshan Airport at 10:43 p.m. local time. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and protests diplomatic visits to the island.
The Chinese drills will begin the day after Pelosi is scheduled to leave Taiwan, but she’ll still be in the region visiting US allies South Korea and Japan.

President Joe Biden said Monday evening that the U.S. conducted a drone strike that killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Afghanistan, a revelation expected to degrade the terror group’s ability to operate.
“He carved a trail of murder and violence against American citizens, American servicemembers, American diplomats and American interests,” Biden said of the pre-dawn precision strike that killed al-Zawahiri.
“We made it clear again tonight that no matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide if you are a threat to our people the United States will find you and take you out,” Biden added.
A senior Biden administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to share details of the strike, said U.S. intelligence analysts identified al-Zawahiri’s location earlier this year.
The official said the U.S. watched al-Zawahiri’s movements for months and determined that he was living in a safe house in Kabul with his family.
“We identified al-Zawahiri on multiple occasions for sustained periods of time on the balcony where he was ultimately struck,” the official said.
“Al-Zawahiri’s family members were present in other parts of the safe house at the time of the strike and were purposely not targeted and were unarmed. We have no indication that civilians were harmed in this strike,” the official added.
The official said Biden received his final intelligence briefing on the matter on July 25 before approving the strike which involved an unmanned aerial vehicle and two Hellfire missiles.

The NCA said the haul would have had a UK street value of more than £40m once cut and sold.
NCA branch operations manager, Adam Berry, described the discovery as a "huge blow" to the peddlers.
He said: "Taking out a consignment of this size will have been a huge blow to the criminal network involved in this shipment, preventing them from making millions of pounds that would have been invested in further criminality.
"Class A drugs are pedalled by gangs involved in violence and exploitation in our communities.
"The NCA works hard with partners to stop drugs getting that far, and making seizures like this demonstrate how we can break that link between international drug cartels and street-level dealers."

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the suspended Accountant General of the Federation, Idris Ahmed and his co-defendants bail upon terms and condition given by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Delivering ruling, Justice Adeyemi Ajayi ordered that the defendants shall not leave the Federal Capital Territory, and should they want to, they would have to seek clearance from the court or have their bail revoked.
The court also stated that the defendants shall sign an undertaking that they will abide by the bail conditions by the EFCC.
Justice Ajayi also ordered that the defendants should not have and shall not procure alternate passports until the case is done with, having deposited their original passports to the commission.
The trial Judge gave the ruling on grounds that the allegations against the defendants are yet to be proven.
The court also stated that In line with the rule of law, the defendants are entitled to bail in-spite of allegations against them, since the prosecution did not mention that the defendants misbehaved while in EFCC custody.
Trial has commenced immediately after the ruling on bail application.

House of Representatives, on Tuesday, passed for second reading a bill seeking to bar the governor, deputy governors and directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN) from joining political parties or engaging in partisan politics.
The bill, which is sponsored by the chairman, House Committee on Water Resources, Sada Soli, is seeking to alter section 11 of the CBN Act, 2007. And it is entitled ” A Bill for an Act to Amend Section 11 of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Act 2007 to add more Conditions for disqualification and Cessation of Appointment as Governor, Deputy Governor or Director of the Bank; and for Related Matters”
Soli, in his lead debate, explained that the proposed legislation is not targeted at anyone, but is intended to strengthen the principal act, so to make it stronger.
The lawmaker recalled that recently the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, went to court to seek to for clarity on whether or not he can participate in partisan politics.

The Nigerian government on Friday continued its assault on Peoples Gazette with the raid of the newspaper’s head office in Abuja that ended with the arrest of one of its editors and four other staff members.
John Adenekan, an assistant managing editor, was taken away at about 12:35 p.m. by five armed police officers who broke into the paper’s office opposite NNPC Quarters in Utako.
The officers returned to the office to arrest four other staff members, Ameedat Adeyemi, Grace Oke, Sammy Ogbu and Justina Tayani.
The officers declined to state the reason for their assault, but demanded to see Managing Editor Samuel Ogundipe and reporter Adefemola Akintade.
Both journalists were not available during the operation, prompting the officers to arrest Mr Adenekan in their stead, perpetuating an unconstitutional tradition of arresting associates in the event that people of interest are unavailable.
Mr Adenekan said he was being taken to the Utako police division following the raid, which comes as the Buhari regime gets increasingly angry with the paper’s brand of journalism.
The Gazette has faced several attacks aimed at intimidating its journalists since its inception in September 2020, including the restriction of access to its website in January 2021 and the invasion of the same head office in January 2022 by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

A Russian court has fined American search giant Google more than 21 billion rubles (f$366 million) on Monday, for its failure to delete prohibited information on the conflict in Ukraine, RIA Novosti has reported.
Moscow’s Tagansky District Court has slapped a turnover-based fine on the IT-company for its repeated refusal to delete information prohibited by Russian law. Roskomnadzor, the national internet and media watchdog, had previously required the company to remove all “misleading information” regarding Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine, from YouTube.
Prior to the court’s ruling, Roskomnadzor had sent Google 17 notifications requiring it to abide by Russian law, but the tech giant failed to comply. The total fine is equal to one tenth of the company and its affiliated structures’ annual turnover in Russia.
Russia has long been critical of the way foreign platforms distribute online content that violates national laws. Last December, the Silicon Valley firm was hit with a fine of 7.2 billion rubles (around $98.1 million) for failing to take down banned content, which was the first time that an IT company had been fined in Russia with a penalty linked to its earnings.
In late June, Roskomnadzor completed a report regarding what it said was Google’s repeated failure to remove prohibited items, saying the company had not deleted at least 7,000 “illegal materials” from Youtube.
At the time, the watchdog accused the IT giant of promoting false information on the Ukraine conflict, and hosting material that supports extremism and encourages children to participate in unauthorized mass protests.
Three people were fatally shot and two were injured Sunday evening at an Indiana mall after a man with a rifle opened fire in a food court and an armed civilian shot and killed him, police said.
The man entered the Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and several magazines of ammunition and began firing in the food court, Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Ison said.
An armed civilian killed the man, Ison said at a news conference. In total, four people were killed and two were injured, he said.
Officers went to the mall at about 6 p.m. for reports of the shooting. Authorities are searching the mall for any other victims, but they believe the shooting was contained to the food court.
Police have confiscated a suspicious backpack that was in a bathroom near the food court, Ison said.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and multiple other agencies are assisting in the investigation.
“We are sickened by yet another type of incident like this in our country,” Indianapolis Assistant Chief of Police Chris Bailey said.
Greenwood is a south suburb of Indianapolis with a population of about 60,000.
There is no active threat to the area, Bailey said.
Authorities said they would provide more details Sunday night.

A mayor in the Philippines has ordered civil servants to smile or risk being fined as he tries to improve the level of service provided by the local government.
Aristotle Aguirre said the policy in Mulanay town, in Quezon province, on the main island of Luzon, must be adopted "while serving the people to give sincerity by showing a feeling of calmness and friendly atmosphere".
The mayor said the new policy came in response to complaints from locals, including coconut growers and fishermen, about the unfriendly treatment they received from town hall staff when they went to pay their taxes or get help for an issue.
According to the New Straits Times, Mr Aguirre said: "When they arrive, they're dismayed at the attitude of people they transact with."
Mr Aguirre, who has a background in occupational therapy, wants to "change the attitude of our government workers".
The order demands employees adopt a "smile policy while serving the people to give sincerity by showing a feeling of calmness and friendly atmosphere".
Employees who do not comply with the order could be fined the equivalent of six months' salary or be suspended from their jobs.
Asked how the rule would be enforced when Filipinos are still required to wear a face mask in public, Mr Aguirre said people can sense if someone is sincerely helping them.
"It's just to send good vibes to our employees and constituents," he said.
The "smile order" states: "Any employee who is found through appropriate action to have violated the order shall be a sufficient ground for administrative liabilities with reference to existing laws, policies, guidelines, rules and regulations."
The mayor said on the order that the human resources team would ensure the monitoring of the policy.
Lawyers to pay television giants, MultiChoice Nigeria, have described as incorrect media reports suggesting that the Court of Appeal has ordered the company to sub-licence some of its channels to Metro Digital Limited, a cable television service provider.
A disclaimer issued yesterday by Toyin Pinheiro, Principal Partner, C.O Pinheiro and Co. Law Practice, legal representatives of MultiChoice Nigeria, stated that the said reports were a misrepresentation of the judgment of the court delivered earlier on Wednesday.
“It is a misrepresentation of the judgment of the Court of Appeal Port Harcourt Division delivered on the 13th of July 2022. The court only directed the National Broadcasting Commission (the 2nd Respondent) to constitute a panel within 21 days to look into the complaints of Metro Digital Limited.
“The Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Division, dismissed the reliefs prayed by Metro Digital Limited seeking to compel MultiChoice Nigeria Limited to sub-licence some channels to Metro Digital Limited.
“The general public is hereby informed to disregard the incorrect reportage,” Pinheiro stated in the disclaimer.
Metro Digital Limited had approached a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt after Multi- Choice turned down its request for the sublicensing of some of its channels on the ground that it does not own the rights to the channels and programmes for which the request was made.
Last year, Metro Digital’s case was dismissed by the Federal High Court on the ground that it was unable to contradict MultiChoice’s claim that it does not own the rights to the content requested.

Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini were acquitted on charges of defrauding FIFA by a Swiss criminal court on Friday, a rare positive outcome for the pair who were among soccer’s most powerful figures before being embroiled in corruption investigations.
Swiss prosecutor Thomas Hildbrand had requested a 20-month suspended sentence for each at the end of the trial at the Federal Criminal Court of Switzerland in Bellinzona.
“Following the decision of the judges of the Court of Bellinzona, this morning, I wanted to express my happiness for all my loved ones that justice has finally been done after seven years of lies and manipulation,” Platini said in a statement. “The truth has come to light during this trial.
“I kept saying it: my fight is a fight against injustice. I won a first game. In this case, there are culprits who did not appear during this trial. Let them count on me, we will meet again. Because I will not give up and I will go all the way in my quest for truth.”
The case was centered around a $2 million payment from FIFA to Platini with Blatter’s approval in 2011, for work done a decade earlier.
Blatter announced his plan to resign early as president, in June 2015, in the fallout from a sprawling American corruption investigation — ending his 17-year reign. A separate but cooperating case by Swiss prosecutors led to the Platini payment being investigated.
The fallout ended Platini’s campaign to succeed his former mentor and saw the former French soccer great removed as president of UEFA, the governing body of European soccer.
“Believe me, going from being a legend of world soccer to a devil is very difficult, especially when it comes to you in a totally unfair way,” Platini added.
Both Blatter and Platini have long denied wrongdoing and claim they had a verbal deal in 1998 for Platini to get extra salary that FIFA could not pay at the time. Platini signed a contract in August 1999 to be paid 300,000 Swiss francs ($300,000) annually.
That defense first failed with judges at the FIFA ethics committee, which banned them from soccer, and later in separate appeals at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to an online Vanguard newspaper report of 6th July, 2022 captioned: Kuje Prison Attack: One Suspect Reportedly Caught After Hot Chase by Gallant Officers. The said report alleged that one of the escaping inmates who “claimed to be a DSS personnel was apprehended by NCS operatives near Kwali after a chase.” The report further stated that the so called DSS operative also claimed to be “carrying out a special mission in the forest”.

In fact, at the point of the attack on the prison, no DSS personnel was an inmate at the holding facility just as the claim of carrying out a special assignment was non-existent. Remember this thread....... Aiden McCarthy, the little boy whose parents were said to have fled during the July 4 shooting by a suspect now in police custody, Robert Crimo.
Kevin and Irina McCarthy, his parents were indeed unlucky as they were killed. The boy was lifted from underneath his father during the attack in the Chicago suburb, which has left eight people dead and 46 injured.
Pershing Square founder Bill Ackman donated $18,000 to a GoFundMe page raising money for Aiden McCarthy, a two-year-old whose parents were among the victims of the July 4 shooting in Highland Park, Illinois.
McCarthy’s story has resonated across the US after he was found “bloodied and alone” in the aftermath of a gunman opening fire from a rooftop during an Independence Day parade in the Chicago suburb, the AP reported. Authorities later confirmed that his parents Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35, had died in the shooting.
The GoFundMe page was started on Tuesday with the goal of raising $500,000. The fund had raised more than $2 million from roughly 37,000 donors in less than 24 hours.
A representative for Ackman confirmed the donation, but declined further comment.
Highland Park has a large Jewish community and the $18,000 donation carries symbolic significance. The number 18 is synonymous with the Hebrew word “chai,” which translates to life. It is custom in the Jewish tradition to give money in multiples of 18 to wish the recipient good luck or “life.” In the aftermath of the shooting, Ackman took to Twitter to decry the mass shootings in the US and retweeted a photo of Aiden.
Following Tuesday night’s bomb attack on the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari has visited the facility.
POLITICS NIGERIA had reported that over 100 terrorists had on Tuesday night attacked the facility, freeing hundreds of inmates, among them fellow terrorists.
The president was received by the Inspector General of Police IGP Usman Baba Alkali, paramilitary service chiefs among other top government officials.
