Government of the State of Osun has awarded a N17,805,367,849 project for the dualization of Old-Garage in Osogbo to Ikirun road; Osogbo-Dagbolu to Ikirun Junction road and Ikirun - Okuku to Kwara State boundary. The contract, which was approved at the 34th Executive Council meeting on Wednesday was awarded to Messrs Zamya Nigeria Ltd. Old-Garage to Ikirun road is 20.5 kilometres; Osogbo- Dagbolu to Ikirun Junction is 9.52 kilometres, while Ikirun to Okuku to Kwara State boundary is 16.55 kilometres. Briefing journalists after the council meeting, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Sunday Akere, said that the contract was awarded on a Contractor-financing Agreement, such that the contractor would be mobilised with 15 per cent and 10 per cent would be released when the job reaches 50 per cent completion, while the remaining 75 per cent balance would be spread over 30 months after the completion of the project without variation or fluctuation. On the proposed regional market in the state capital, tagged O-Hub, the commissioner said that a sum of N225 million had been approved to be spent as compensation for those whose properties were affected on the site at Dagbolu. He maintained that the proposed developers of the market from Qatar also came to the state last week and indicated their interest in expanding the scope of the project to include beef abattoir, as well as improving the capacity of the rail line, with a view to ensuring that large consignment of goods could be ferried to stations in Dagbolu and Osogbo. On agriculture, Akere disclosed that 19 out of the 30 creeps, which are on site consist of storage facilities for farmers, for which money has been released had been completed, while the construction of seven mini- warehouses is ongoing across the state, adding that the Osogbo 500-metric tonne warehouse for farmers has been completed and delivered to the Ministry of Agriculture, while the construction of the Oyan 1,000 metric tonne capacity warehouse is ongoing. According to him, the intention of the government is to clear 1,500 hectares of land this year, with a view to allocating them to farmers to guarantee bumper harvest, out of which 1,400 hectares had been cleared so far, saying that planting has started on the farm. Conveying the decision of the council on the state support for the elderly, tagged Agba Osun, on the report of enumeration for the elderly citizens, Akere stated that very soon, the government would start series of programmes and comprehensive care for them, saying that the administration of Aregbesola is hell bent in making life more meaningful for the senior citizens. Meanwhile, the council, he said, approved the appointment of Alhaji Ahmed Adekunle Oyelude as the new Olowu of Kuta with effect from May 16, 2012, sequel to the demise of the late Olowu, Oba Shitu Bamigbade on December 28, 2011. He noted that there are four ruling houses in the town, namely Adeyi, Lanloye, Delumo and Tegbo/Aje ruling houses, saying that it is now the turn of Tegbo/Aje ruling houses, from where five candidates contested, out of which the kingmakers selected the new Oyelude. On the performance of the physically-challenged athletes from the state who partcipated in a competition held in Akure, where they came 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Table Tennis, the commissioner said that the governor has indicated his intention to host the winners and compensate them adequately.
