https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXUTwRN-ktg Ethiopia has overtaken Kenya as East Africa’s economic giant According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) figures, Ethiopia’s annual economic output (i.e. Gross Domestic Product (GDP)) for this year was expected to hit $78 billion from $72 billion recorded last year. Their economic growth since 2015 has been pegged at 10.8% which has helped put a significant gap between them and Kenya. In monetary terms, Ethiopia has opened a gap of about $29 million over Kenya. Ethiopia’s economic growth is hinged on public-led spending on infrastructure and a strong demand by locals. It has also recently become an destination of choice for particularly Chinese investors. ‘‘Non-resource-intensive countries, such as Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Senegal, generally continued to grow robustly, benefiting from strong domestic demand and high levels of public spending, though in some cases, growth eased from 2015,’‘ an IMF report released in April 2017 read. Another factor believed to be driving the economy is the country’s large population which is almost double that of Kenya. |

Speaking to press in Egypt while finishing up her solo, four-country African tour on Saturday, the First Lady addressed the controversial white pith helmet she had worn while embarking on a safari in Nairobi National Park in Kenya. The hat piqued some observers, who noted that the helmet is frequently associated with European colonizers of Africa and India. |

In Switzerland - World’s Longest Tunnel Opens with Satanic Ritual The Swiss have put on one of the most bizarre opening ceremonies in history to mark the completion of the world's longest tunnel. Famed for their trains, organisers roped in more than 600 dancers, acrobats and dramatic actors and even composed the new route's very own theme tune as they pulled out all the stops for Wednesday's inauguration at the tunnel's northern portal in Erstfeld. Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, President Francois Hollande of France and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi all came to southern Switzerland for an upbeat, glitzy celebration featuring musical bands and dancers. Swiss engineer Carl Eduard Gruner first imagined it in 1947: a massive tunnel, unprecedented in length, buried a mile and a half under Switzerland’s symbolic Gotthard mountain range. Nearly seven decades later, after redesigns, political disagreements and the long, slow work of drilling beneath the Gotthard massif, as it’s called, Gruner’s dream is complete. The Gotthard Base Tunnel — a record-setting 35.4 miles long, and farther below ground than any other tunnel — was inaugurated Wednesday. The occasion was marked with a celebration that promoted “Swiss values such as innovation, precision and reliability,” as the tunnel’s website puts it. But to most, it seems like a truly Satanic Ritual in many ways! A dance troupe also performed in just their underwear before fireworks were sent blasting into the sky outside the venue. The out-there event was in honour of the world's longest rail tunnel, running for 35 miles under the Swiss Alps, and was put together by German director Volker Hesse. It featured a baby with feathered white wings and oversized head and a man dancing with a bird's nest on his head. Music was provided by Alpine horn players, an army band and live choirs. The show included a goat-man who yelled on the stage while surrounded as dancers dressed up as straw bales and surrounded by men and women in veils.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHIJMbIGg-k Magnitude 5.9 earthquake hits northern Haiti A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Haiti on Saturday night, according to the US Geological Survey. At least seven people were killed and 130 injured, according to a partial assessment of the damage, Renald Lubérice, General Secretary of the Council of Ministers of Haiti said on Twitter. "The government is mobilized to assist the victims. We ask people in affected areas to remain vigilant," Lubérice said. Prime Minister Jean-Henry Céant said a crisis cabinet has been created to coordinate all emergency responses to the earthquake. "Damage has been recorded mainly in the Far North. All my sympathies to the victims. The executive at the highest level is mobilized to provide appropriate answers. I call on the population to be cautious and calm," he said in a statement posted to Twitter. President Jovenel Moïse also tweeted that civil protection workers are already working to assist people in affected areas. Two minor aftershocks also felt The USGS said the center of the quake was about 11 miles northwest of the city of Port-de-Paix. It was only 7.2 miles deep. There was no tsunami warning in effect following the quake, which was felt across the country, the Haitian civil protection agency said. The agency said damage and injuries were mostly concentrated in the northwest region of the island, where two minor aftershocks were also felt, the agency said. It said the injured are receiving treatment in hospitals. In January 2010, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake killed an estimated 220,000 to 300,000 people in Haiti. Tens of thousands of people are still displaced as a result of the quake. https://edition.cnn.com/2018/10/06/americas/haiti-earthquake/index.html |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6Zv1z7J4SY Namibia President Pledges to Expropriate White Owned Land Namibia’s President, Hage Geingob, has called for a change to the constitution to allow the government to expropriate land. “The willing-buyer-willing-seller principle has not delivered results. Careful consideration should be given to expropriation,” the president said. Namibia wants to transfer 43 percent, of its arable agricultural land, to previously disadvantaged blacks by 2020. Namibia will be the second African country to expropriate land after South Africa should this materialize. Just like South Africans, black Namibians were driven off their land, banished to barren and often crowded homelands while being denied official ownership or tenure rights during colonization. Namibia is among the world’s most economically unequal nations with i'ts 6% white population owning the most enterprises. |

Azuri Peninsula In Eko Atlantic (Lagos) Six Comansa cranes have reached their full height helping a Nigerian contractor build the Azuri Peninsula residential complex in a new city taking shape on reclaimed land in Lagos, Nigeria. The 244-apartment scheme is part of the ambitious Eko Atlantic business and residential project under construction on the artificial peninsula. The State of Lagos and the Chagoury Group are leading the development, which gives Lagos 10 square kilometres of new land, formerly lost to the Atlantic Ocean, intended to accommodate a thriving new business hub. Azuri Peninsula is being built at the leisure-oriented Marina District, one of ten planned districts in the scheme. The six Comansa cranes belong to the fleet of the turnkey contractor ITB Nigeria FZE. The machines, all with flat-top design and maximum load capacity of 18 and 20 tonnes, are building Azuri Peninsula’s three towers, the tallest reaching 140m. Distributing progress photographs shown here, Comansa said ITB used hydraulic jacking cages to jack the machines up as the buildings expanded upward. The cranes are now working around the clock at their maximum height, the tallest of which is 163.5m. The cranes were equipped with a system that increases the hoisting speeds for light loads, which the contractor said increased productivity. “Due to the height of the buildings, it has been essential to rely on cranes with high hoist speeds,” said Paul Kattar, Tower Crane Manager at ITB Nigeria. “The work cycles of the Comansa cranes on site are very short, which increase its productivity, and helps us to also shorten work times.” The cranes are working 24 hours a day, lifting steel structures during the daytime and helping with the concrete works during the night.

Zambians cry foul as State-owned newspaper publishes in Mandarin As Chinese influence continues to grow rapidly in Zambia, the state-owned Times of Zambia newspaper has come up with an ingenious way of increasing their revenue by publishing today's lead story in Mandarin. The article quotes President Edgar Lungu as saying Zambia "will not look east or west - we will look forward and go with whoever wants to go with us". Those are comments he made while hosting a Swiss delegation at the presidential palace yesterday. Reporting the story in both English and Mandarin Chinese is a move aimed at tapping into the Chinese market, says chief government spokeswoman Dora Siliya. "Times of Zambia aiming to increase revenue by targeting Chinese market. Today's edition has a Chinese version of top story. They want to tap into Chinese advertising. Who moved my cheese? Times of Zambia responding." The ministers tweet was criticised by some. https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/2018/10/02/zambians-cry-foul-as-state-owned-newspaper-publishes-in-mandarin_c1828786
