In an interview with journalists in Nairobi, Kenya, at the weekend, Buhari reiterated the preparedness of the Federal Government to discuss the release of the Chibok girls kidnapped by Boko Haram terror group since 2014. NAN quoted the President as saying that the Nigerian government is ready to dialogue with bonafide leaders of the terror group who know the whereabouts of the girls. ‘‘I have made a couple of comments on the Chibok girls and it seems to me that much of it has been politicised. ‘‘What we said is that the government which I preside over is prepared to talk to bonafide leaders of Boko Haram. ‘‘If they do not want to talk to us directly, let them pick an internationally recognised Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), convince them that they are holding the girls and that they want Nigeria to release a number of Boko Haram leaders in detention, which they are supposed to know. ‘‘If they do it through the ‘modified leadership’ of Boko Haram and they talk with an internationally recognised NGO then Nigeria will be prepared to discuss for their release,’’ he said. President Buhari, who spoke to the media on the margins of the sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), warned that the Federal Government will not waste time and resources with “doubtful sources’’ claiming to know the whereabouts of the girls. ‘‘We want those girls out and safe. The faster we can recover them and hand them over to their parents, the better for us.’’ The President maintained that the terror group, which pledged allegiance to ISIS, has been largely decimated by the gallant Nigerian military with the support of immediate neighbours from Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin. ‘‘Some of the information about the division in Boko Haram is already in the press and I have read in the papers about the conflict in their leadership. ‘‘The person known in Nigeria as their leader, we understand was edged out and the Nigerian members of Boko Haram started turning themselves to the Nigerian military. ‘‘We learnt that in an air strike by the Nigeria Air Force he was wounded. Indeed their top hierarchy and lower cadre have a problem and we know this because when we came into power, they were holding 14 out of the 774 local governments in Nigeria. But now they are not holding any territory and they have split to small groups attacking soft targets. Source: https://www.naij.com/945563-boko-haram-buhari-set-bring-back-chibok-girls.html

political parties nominate candidates for election. They sensitize members on various govt policies and programmes. They educate people on political participations. They act as critics to the ruling party which is very significant to strengthening of democracy e.g. what Fayose is doing to APC led federal govt. They assists in drawing manifestoes for govt which forms d basis for govt policy They act as agents and observers during elections. Skynet247 : u can develop those points |

One of Africa's largest oil producers and among the continent's wealthier nations, small lush Gabon holds a presidential election Saturday at a time of rising social tension due to the global slump in oil prices. The vote sees one of the strongest challenges yet to 50 years of rule by the Bongo family, with incumbent Ali Bongo, who stepped into his father's shoes on his death in 2009, challenged by a former top African diplomat, ex-African Union Commission chief Jean Ping. - Central African oil 'emirate' - Because of its potential to use abundant offshore oil reserves discovered in the 1970s to build a strong middle class, Gabon was once dubbed "central Africa's little emirate". Oil accounts for 60 percent of the country's revenues. But with world prices sliding, forcing layoffs in the oil sector, Gabon rejoined the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in July after more than 20 years outside the cartel. It is OPEC's smallest member, pumping 200,000 barrels per day. Gabon is the world's second largest producer of manganese, and its vast forests provide 12 percent of global timber exports, including coveted tropical hardwoods. - Wealthier than most Africans - Gabon in 2015 was ranked 110 out of 188 countries on the United Nations Human Development Index -- among the top 10 African nations listed on the index. Per capita gross national income (GNI) in 2015 was estimated at $9,210 (8,130 euros) by the World Bank -- about four times greater than in most sub-Saharan African nations. But because of high income inequality, about one-third of Gabon's population of 1.8 million people still live below the poverty line. Between 2010 and 2014, the economic growth rate was about six percent but it has fallen to 3.9 percent this year, according to a World Bank forecast, because of the slump in global oil prices. - Forests and chimps - Straddling the equator on Africa's Atlantic coast, forests cover about 80 percent of Gabon, hosting amazing wildlife. In 2002, Omar Bongo created 13 new national parks that cover around 11 percent of Gabon's territory to protect its wildlife and forests from excessive logging. Gabon has sought to cash in on eco-tourism by showing off its wild gorillas, chimpanzees, panthers, elephants and hippos. At 267,667 square kilometres (103,346 square miles), Gabon is slightly larger than the UK, two-thirds the size of Japan. - Stable government but at a price - The country has enjoyed relative political stability, mainly because former colonial power France helped Omar Bongo rule for 41 years, the third longest reign in modern Africa after Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and Moamer Kadhafi of Libya. After he died in June 2009, his son Ali won an election but opposition media claimed he had essentially been installed by France. The population is roughly 80 percent Christian, while Muslims and animists account for the other 20 percent. - CAN football finals - Gabon next year hosts the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) football championship finals, starting in January. Record seven-time champions Egypt and first-time qualifiers Guinea-Bissau are among 10 countries which have so far booked places at the 2017 Africa CAN. Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Morocco, Senegal and Zimbabwe also secured places and Gabon are automatic participants as hosts of the 16-nation tournament. I was just reading comments on Nairaland few minutes ago, about the SARS raid of a Bayelsa State accountant's home, then i stumbled on a comment that i think worth sharing. The commenter described how a job seeker applying for the post of an accountant got "disqualified" by what he put as his hobbies. The screenshot is attached. Pls, avoid such mistakes on your CV, as many people have lost their chances to secure a job due to one information or the other they provided on their CV's.

Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo says the federal government has saved N1.4 trillion for not paying oil subsidy. Speaking in Kano on Thursday during the third day of the 15th Joint Planning Board and National Council on development meeting, Osinbajo urged Nigerians not to lose faith in Buhari’s administration, saying the president would fix the economy. “With the deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector, there has been a significant increase in the availability of petrol throughout the country for the savings of N1.4 trillion on subsidy payments alone,” Osinbajo said. “Also, a more flexible exchange rate regime, we will have to decrease the pressure on the external reserve. In the short run, of course, there should be consequences for inflation. “We expect that with greater priority we have seen in the implementation of the policy by the CBN, the foreign exchange market will stabilize and confidence will be restored.” He spoke on what the Buhari-led administration has been doing on strengthening Nigeria’s economic planning. “Let me speak briefly about some of the things that the Buhari administration is doing with regard to strengthening short and medium term planning. “We have strengthened the link between budgeting and strategic planning by merging the National Planning Commission with the Budget office of the federation. “We have adopted zero base budgeting, which compels the interrogation of public expenditure at micro levels and allows effective deployment of limited financial resources to areas and sectors with the greatest need. “We have used the short-term strategic implementation plan to guide the 2016 budget; and just yesterday (Wednesday), the Federal Executive Council approved the medium plan expenditure framework and the fiscal strategy paper, which are fully consistent with the SDGs and the African unions agenda 2063. “These are the priorities of the Federal Government in the areas of tackling insecurity, combating corruption and growing the economy which would undoubtedly find expression in any medium term plan. “The same is true for the policy interventions in the strategic implementation plan, notably, with regard to the policy, security and governance, diversification of the economy, power, rail and roads, oil and gas performance, ease of doing business, and social investment. “The commitment of the Buhari administration to promote broader micro economics and structural reform; and this is made in our push to mitigate supply-side constraint.” Source: abusidiqu.com/govt-saves-n1-4tr-fuel-subsidy-removal-osinbajo-says/
