Politics / Re: Yoruba Emulate Kosovo - Want Out Of Nigeria by HottFunmi: 7:32pm On Feb 23, 2008
By Folem,
The tribe of Somalis have Somalia and what have they done with their country?

Within Yoruba's there are differences e.g Ife/Modakeke and in case you don't remember, Civil Wars have been fought before amongst Yoruba e.g Kiriji Wars and will likely be fought again just like the Somalis in the event of being in a country where there are no external tribes to put the underdevelopment blame games on when they don't "blame it on the rain".
God forbid, the yoruba nation will not fight another civil war like Ife/Modakeke. What kind of prayer is that? Do you know what Ife/modakeke did to yoruba nation? Do you know how much blood and human resources that was lost in that senseless war?  I am sure you are not far from the disciples of Adedibu who claim to love and preserve the yoruba people but inwards, they are filled with hate and looking for a way to sell their brothers for $1.

By Doyin13,
I knw this is not the literature thread, but I just had to mention the novel 'Anthills of the Savannah'

If you want a quick reader on what makes Achebe so great. . . .just fast forward to the 'speech'
by a certain old man on the importance of the story tellers/journalists in society. The most powerful piece of writing I have read and I have read a few in my time
even if i say so.
I heard that his "No longer at Ease" is another thriller comparable to "Things fall Apart".

Why do u need low blood pressure if your pressure is normal?

Arent there things to reduce it even if its high?

Do doctors recommend smoking to reduce BP?

i just dey wonder o
Were you not saying that smoking is 100% disadvantageous. Nobody recommends smoking for abnormal BP but that doesn't mean that it doesn't have any effect on them but doctors are more concerned about the other effects of smoking that may be worse than the BP especially when there are drugs for BP. On the other hand, whatever is the good thing you derive from chocolates can be gotten elsewhere from a less dangerous food. Chocolates are as poisonous as they come.

By 4Play,
Do you expect regular users of Nairaland to come here and say,". . . . . .Nna,make I tell you the truth,my husband is sh*t!"

If Nigerian men are "bad",compared to who? For those living in America, would they switch with AA women and have AA male partners as husbands instead?Do they want Latino or Caucasian husbands?

Instead of you guys correcting your evil ways, you rather dare your women to look elsewhere. So, many  Nigerian men treat their women like thrash because they feel that nobody else will want them or because they feel Naija women do not have the guts to look elsewhere? 21st century came with a lot of things you know and before you know it, you guys may be history. Update your game else,

I am the only person left in the world that is yet to read this book. I think the book is more popular in America than in Nigeria. Since the book is almost 50 years old, why did the world start making so much noise about it over the last decade?

It's a pity the likes of Achebe and Soyinka are aging and will soon be no more, who will replace them? Chimanda Adichie?

Again, Things Fall Apart, gets global acclaim
From Laolu Akande, New York

HONOUR and renewed acclaim around the world are set again for that award-winning African novel in a class of its own, Things Fall Apart, as the book enters its 50th year publication anniversary.

A series of events, including a world-class tribute at the historic New York City Town Hall, have been lined up here in the United States (US.), Nigeria and across the world for the 50th anniversary celebration of the award-winning novel, including the publication of an anniversary edition by a US. book publisher.

In a statement yesterday in New York by the publishers, Anchor books, part of the international celebration of Achebe's book is a tribute to be hosted by Anchor Books and PEN American Center on February 26 at Town Hall in New York City.

The Town hall is where New York City is being managed, including the offices of the New York Mayor and the City Council. It is at the heart of the city, a major historical site and tourist attraction.

Dignitaries and authors expected at the tribute include Nobel winner, Toni Morrison; Chimamanda Adichie; Suheir Hammad; Edwidge Danticat; Ha Jin, Chris Abani, and Colum McCann. The evening also features other special performances.

Regarded as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, Things Fall Apart was first published in England in 1958, and its author, Nigeria's Chinua Achebe has since risen to the status of "arguably the father of modern African literature," according to Anchor Books, (US.), the publisher of the 50th anniversary edition of the historic book.

Said the publishers: "2008 marks the 50th anniversary of Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart." To honor this milestone and celebrate Black History Month, (in United States, February is Black History month) Anchor Books has produced a beautiful new 50th Anniversary Edition. Achebe's tale of tribal life in Nigeria is a powerful read, as moving the first time as it is the fiftieth. It is also a fantastic choice for reading groups and is sure to inspire lively discussion."

According to the publishers: "Put simply, Things Fall Apart, one of the first African novels written in English to receive global critical acclaim, is the most illuminating and permanent monument we have to the modern African experience as seen from within. Since its first publication, Achebe's seminal novel has been published in 50 different languages and has sold millions of copies in the US. alone since its original publication."

Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) and Nigerian government officials are also listed as participants in some of the events set to celebrate the book and its world-acclaimed author (Achebe), now an Emeritus Professor at Bard College in New York State.

Other groups around the world playing an active role in the celebrations include the Brooklyn Academy of Music, in New York, the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, African Thinkers Roundtable in Dallas, Texas, Bard College radio station in New York, South African Writers Association among several others.

Other events and programmes to celebrate the book's 50th anniversary would take place in Washington, DC, Princeton New Jersey, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston, and other places here in the US,
Events have also been lined up in London; Lisbon, Portugal; Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa; Hyderabad, India and in several Nigerian and US. universities. There are also plans for events in Canada, France, Sweden, Kenya, Ghana, Gambia and Brazil. The celebrations starting this month world-wide will proceed all the way till November this year.

As the US.-based publishers recalled in its statement, " Things Fall Apart concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo's world through the arrival of aggressive, proselytising European missionaries. These twin dramas are perfectly harmonised and they are modulated by an awareness capable of encompassing at once the life of nature, human history and the mysterious compulsions of the soul."

When the 100 books of the century were honoured in New York marking the 100 years of the opening of the New York library, Things Fall Apart was listed as one of the 100 books of the century in the late 1990s.

According to Nobel winner, Nadine Gordimer, in the New York Times Book Review, "Achebe is gloriously gifted with the magic of an ebullient, generous, great talent," and the Sunday Times of London said "Achebe is one of the most distinguished artists to emerge from the West African cultural renaissance of the post-war world."

Police uncover 30 illegal detention camps in Ibadan

DELE OGUNYEMI, Ibadan

Oyo State Police Command has declared about 30 illegal detention camps, where people are being tortured to death are in operation in different parts of Ibadan, Oyo State capital. But the Command maintained that its officers and men are stepping up efforts to uncover and crack down the various locations wthout further delay.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the State Command, ASP Olabisi Okuwobi, made the shocking revelation in Ibadan, while speaking with journalists on the heels of last weekend’s gory discovery by detectives from the state Criminal Investigation Department [CID] of an illegal detention camp being operated by one Alfa Ganiyu Imoniyi at Ile-Tuntun area of Ibadan.

About 29 detainees found at the Ile-Tuntun illegal camp were set free by the police operatives.

However, another person identified as Biliaminu Bashiru was barely six days after tortured to death by owner of another illegal detention camp, Alfa Ali Admola, located at Orogun area of Ibadan.

Okuwobi told newsmen that police detectives had already arrested Alfa Ali Ademola in connection with Bashiru’s death.

The death of Bashiru has brought the number of people reportedly killed at such illegal detention camp in recent time to three, as two were feared dead in the Imoniyi’s camp discovered last Friday.

Commenting over the development, the PPRO said: "The command has been hinted that 30 such illegal detention camps are in Ibadan."

She, however, said that investigations were on to trace the exact locations of the illegal detention camps while maintaining that the police would definitly crack down on such places as soon as they are discovered.

The PPRO explained that the late Bashiru, whose corpse was uncovered at the Orogun illegal detention camp was taken to Alfa Ali for Quranic study earlier this month only to be found dead in the camp.

"Based on information, policemen stormed the place and met the lifeless body of the victim on ground after he was allegedly tortured by Alfa Ali," the PPRO stated adding that there were marks on the body of the victim, which showed that he was actually beaten to death.

By KoboJunkie,
I am not sure you know much about what Nigerian women think of cause the average woman in Nigeria not thinking Abortion and the abortion clinic down the street. Infact, even those who do have abortions are mostly not ready to have anyone know they do such let alone sit down to discuss abortion issues with you. Like I mentioned earlier, Nigerians are more involved in dealing with greater issues in their lives than abortions and issues that concern abortions. Even women in Nigeria who have abortions would not want to sit down to talk about it with you for an interview even. Not cause it is illegal or anything but cause there are so many other complicated issues to be dealt with first in that country. Crying human rights when the topic of abortion is brought up in a country where no one has basic human rights is trying to put the carriage in front of the horse and assuming the carriage is of great important. The horse can ride without the carriage but if the horse is sick, what do you need the carriage for??

True but shall we cross our legs and wait on our women to get cormfortable about discusssing their sex issues like rape before we lend them a hand? Abortion may be at the bottom of the list for an avg Naija woman but there is no harm in adressing the issues of dangers associated with quacks. I don't subscribe to abortions, but I think the govt should vote in more money towards child welfare, open a department for child protection and provide a way to sustain motherless children much better than they do now.

By bawomolo,
the last time i checked the house committee on women's right is different from the house committe on transportation. maybe u should send a letter to your house representative if u are concerned about roads. these women are pushing a bill while u are doing nothing but whine about bad roads. the men/women of the national assembly are paid huge amounts to handle multiple bills at once. nigeria is a sad country if it has to handle issues one at a time. the next thing we know, a child labor bill would have to wait right

Child labour to me is even more important that any other thing in Naija but it may never work because of poverty.

Shuooooooooooo? Why the vexation? Okay he does not have 3 passports but one. He will eventually. Or at least 2. His mom still lives in Nigeria, I presume. Nobody cares what he claims really. All I am saying is that chances are with his career here in the US, he may never go back to Uk or Nigeria. He will be one of those Nigerians that will become a combination-object. His Nigerian influence will gradually take the back seat.
When he gets married--probably not a Nigerian--further removed. His kids--forget that area!
For sure this one he's chasing celebrities around.
