Education / Finally, Good News For Hnd Graduates; Study For A (hons) Deg In A Year by Houri1(f): 11:16pm On Feb 12, 2018
Hello everyone and greetings especially to Hnd holders in the house. i have read a lot of post n thread over the dichotomy between Bsc and Hnd. A lot has been said and mostly true. In our dear country both academic qualification are not the same and it will never be treated so,even though it ought to be but sadly n truly its not and i do not think it will and even if it will, can anyone tell when that bill will be passed? So my dear Hnd graduates do not waste your time with sentiments, arguments and debates that wont change a tin, TIME is of essence, 5-6yrs has been taken already and almost treated as waste by our dear country, utilize the remaining well.

As regards looking abroad with ur diploma, something i consider a good idea but note you cant go in for masters with Hnd in UK nor Germany, neither can you in Canada most likely only in US because they are interested in the credit hrs and GPA rather than the nomenclature on ur certificate. U may do ur research on other countries though but i bet there will be a clause somewhere and cost a huge factor to consider.

May i tell you in case you don't know;
i. Did u know the world is so competitive now
ii. Did you know Bsc is as good as a SSCE now, like minimum entry certificate
iii. Did you know some companies will not even employ graduates from Nigerian universities except foreign unis into their mid level mgt positions yet you are carrying Hnd
iv. Did you know so many scholarship, openings, offers you will want to apply for but you cant because its clearly written holder of Bsc only
v. Did you know there are so many positions or jobs you cant even pick up in this country because you have Hnd as if its a plague!

So my question is why do you want to continue to limit yourself ?, how long will you continue to train people only for them to be ur OGA cos they have Bsc? wont you change the tide? how long will you continue to complain? how long will you continue to cry?

The list is endless, i bet you have all suffered rejection and pain at some point over this matter as i have too, but i decided i will do something about it so when i saw this opportunity, i took advantage of it and i decided i must share the GOOD NEWS.

Education / Re: UK To Begin Investigating Universities/lecturers Who Award Below 2.1 by Houri1(f): 11:40pm On Feb 05, 2018
HigherEd:
Staff at a Russell Group university have been told that they will face investigation over their grading if they award average marks lower than a 2:1.

In an email seen by Times Higher Education, lecturers at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Business and Management are told that they must remember what is called the “60:60:60 principle” when assessing students’ work.

With 60 now widely used as the threshold for an upper second – often referred to, along with firsts, as a “good degree” – the memo reminds module organisers who “return marks for any element of assessment where the average mark is below 60 and/or fewer than 60 per cent of the students receive a mark of more than 60 will be asked to explain why this is the case”.

Moderators are also asked to “bear the 60:60:60 principle in mind” and to “sense-check with markers if the distribution of marks does not meet this principle, recommending scaling or other adjustments if justified” – a process used in universities to increase unusually low marks to reflect student achievement.

The email advised that “60:60:60 is not an aspirational target for marks” but is the “minimum threshold for further investigation” by moderators and “if necessary by the exam board chair as candidate assessments for scaling”.

News of the school’s rule is likely to fuel concerns over degree inflation at UK universities, where 75 per cent of students gained either a first or upper second in 2016-17, up from 68 per cent in 2012-13, according to figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency last month.

In September, former universities minister Jo Johnson warned that grade inflation was “ripping through English higher education”. A new metric has been introduced to the teaching excellence framework in a bid to tackle the issue.

However, Queen Mary defended the “60:60:60 principle”, which it said was used only in its business school to address degree marks that were historically “significantly below” those awarded at comparable universities.

Only 63 per cent of its business studies graduates took a “good degree” in 2016-17, up from 53 per cent in 2012-13, it said. In contrast, at least 80 per cent of business studies graduates at 10 of its Russell Group peers took a minimum of a 2:1 last year.

“The 60:60:60 principle serves as a threshold, below which we look at the data and ask if the grading was fair and reasonable,” said a university spokesman, who added that the process is “subject to oversight and approval by the Degree Examination Board and external examiners”.

On the historically low marks awarded in its business school, the spokesman said that the university was “looking at why this is” because it “attracts highly capable students and we have a responsibility to ensure they reach their potential”.

kolly4gunn:
Pls guys i need a university in usa that accept hnd to study masters
Most universities in the usa will accept you for masters because they mostly consider your GPA and credit hours done instead of the title on the degree you are carrying. Your transcripts will be evaluated and you will be communicated to if you are good enough to be admitted. However you should note schooling in usa is not cheap, tuition, living cost, board, health insurance, books etc, also u might likely write GMAT or GRE or ILETS as a standard for admission. I would recommend since you are looking at something cheaper an online study in a foreign university with scholarship that has the same weight as an on campus study, a masters or a top up, where you can also pay in installments and learn at your pace.

Education / Re: Advantage Of HND Over Bsc by Houri1(f): 11:55am On Feb 05, 2018
You raise some points that are true, however our present situation as Nigerians do not even see Hnd n Bsc at par, i hope the Ministry of Education will one day wake up to her responsibility of addressing this issue or scrapping polytechnics instead of allowing students go waste abt 5-6yrs of their time only to be limited after graduation.
