zetzar: Afrikaans ruined the land? aren't u from Lesotho. What about Portugese, French and English most of the countries don't know their native languages, why do you prefer Pidgin to Afrikaans?
I did Southern African History in Secondary School and I can only speak for the southern part. The British robbed us nothing, their brought Christianity, civilisation and a lot to the countries down here. I know how to read and write because of the British Colonialisation, I know my rights because of them, heck I know Christ because of the first missionaries that brought peace in our countries.

The boers fought us cz of our land, the freestate in South Africa is part of Lesotho that was signed because boers were closing in on us, we couldn't trade because Lesotho is landlocked in S.A so we had to reach an agreement for us to trade and that happened after Queen Elizabeth stepped in.

They do act funny when I announce my identity but if I don't they are cool, most of the time m mistaken for a Naija chick lipsrsealed
It's sad shame! My grandma buys Huisgenoot only! No English magazines in her house.

Afrikaans is a second language subject in most white schools. Like with me, I didn't have a choice but had to learn the language.
I was introduced to the language in high school, grade11. I just bunked every afrikaans lesson until my mother pleaded on my behalf. grin from there I was free sha.

Afam4eva: Like seriously? I thought Afrikaans was only spoken by white South Africans of Dutch ancestry. I never knew some blacks in SA speak Afrikaans too.
Steve Biko and others went on a toyi toyi for change, imagine being taught maths, and sciences in Afrikaanshuh

We are glad those trying days are over sha.

Afam4eva: So, in other words, these languages apart from Afrikaans which is an offshoot of dutch are kinda mutually intelligible. Meaning that they are sort of like dialects but are seen as different languages.
gbam. grin

Dutch/Afrikaans ruined the land, its so sad to hear your grandma speaking Dutch like she was born there, only to find out it was forced down to her throat.

I prefer Pidgin to Afrikaans, no hard feelings though.

Afam4eva: Up until some years back, i used to think all black South Africans spoke the same language. It must really be difficult for the minorities cos i noticed unlike Nigeria where English and Pidgin English is the mainstay, some mainstream programs in South Africa fuse English Zulu or Xosa. There's even a music program i used to follow on DSTV where the presenters will just switch to a local language. How do those who don't understand the language cope?
The funny thing about Southern Africans is that our languages are entertwined somehow. Lately people just use their native tongues and they understand each other, the other thing that broke South Africans is Afrikaans. They were forced to speak it and learn it, its funny that some people are not able to communicate it english till this day.

Its only Sesotho in Lesotho but Sesotho, Pedi and Tswana are related, like Zulu, Xhosa and Swati.

Afam4eva: I've heard of Malaika but don't know any of his/her songs. But haven't heard of any other artiste from SA.
Malaika is a duo, they were three but the other died a few years back. Most of their songs are wedding songs.

InesQor: @obadiah777:

Thanks for the clarification, moderator.

That makes me concerned though. It is rather discouraging that whatever you make an effort to post on a thread will be hidden or deleted in its entirety just because someone could not hold back his or her intolerance and decided to act childish or fatuous on a public forum, and all because you quoted them in response. This either makes the quote function irrelevant or plain risky to use. Who knows what the moderators or supermods will find offensive? (I've seen other things which I could have considered offensive, and being quoted by others too, and nothing happens).

In my opinion maybe it is better to edit a post if it was in itself not offensive.

For the time being maybe one needs to stop quoting posts.
In your bolded red, I think it would be wise not to quote such post then.

Afam4eva: You're right. At a point, South African musicians were dominating the African music scene with the likes of Chaka Cha, Brenda fasie, Mariam makeba, Lucky dube etc but right now, we don't hear anything from their musicians like we used to.
The young ones have taken the centre stage and its imitation of America right, left and centre.

But we have guys like Ringo Madlingozi, Ntando, Thandiswa Mazwai, Zonke, Malaika, Mafikizolo, Unathi Nkayi and Dj Malinga grin

Those are still rooted to their cultures.
