Nairaland / General / No Going Back On Strike, ASUU Vow by hypman(m): 5:24pm On Nov 15, 2016
no going back on strike, ASUU vowel
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, says there is no going back on its one- week warning strike scheduled to begin on Wednesday. Biodun Ogunyemi, the union’s National President, told the News Agency of Nigeria on telephone on Tuesday in Lagos that the strike would be total. The union leadership, after its emergency executive committee meeting, declared the warning strike at a news conference on Monday in Abuja. Mr. Ogunyemi said chronic under-funding of the sector through low budgetary allocation, which went from 11 per cent in 2015 to eight per cent in 2016, did not go down well with the union. He pointed out the failure of government to implement the 2009 agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as some of the reasons for embarking on the warning strike. The president said that its members were tired of what they described as “government’s empty promises’’ in setting up its negotiation team for the review of agreement as consistently requested by ASUU since 2012. “There shall be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of our branches while the strike lasts.” According to him, the union will put machinery in place to ensure that there is total compliance during the strike. He explained that the essence of the warning strike was to draw attention of concerned stakeholders and the general public to the challenges that the unions, universities and other stakeholders in the sector were facing. “Nobody will say before we exhaust the warning strike some issues cannot be addressed if government wants to be sincere with our cause. “We are doing this because we want Nigerians to come into the matter and ensure that these issues are given adequate attention they deserve. “Our lecturers are given 40 per cent of their salaries, which is just not encouraging, as this will lead to poor commitment in carrying out their jobs. “I am sure nobody will like a 40 per cent university education or 40 per cent teaching of various courses including research development and output. “That is why we have to take the matter before the National Assembly, which we believe, will come into the matter just like the Nigerian parents.’’ Reacting to the impending strike, the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), said that ASUU was right and that it must be supported. Adeolu Ogunbanjo, the association’s 2nd Deputy National President, told NAN that it was time the government takes the country’s education seriously. “ASUU has done well by giving warning, considering the patience its members have shown in these whole issues. “At least it is good for them to feel the pulse of Nigerians and other key stakeholders on the matter. “However, because Nigeria is struggling with recession presently, we, on behalf of Nigerian parents are begging them not to down tool totally. “They have made their points and we thank them for creating the awareness but we are begging them to shelve the looming strike to sometimes next year, when the recession might have been abated. “Government too should seize the opportunity to listen to the union and see what can be done concerning all the issues it has raised. “It will be a total disaster if government should allow ASUU to down tool indefinitely, considering the hardship that is currently taking its toll on every sector of the nation’s economy.”

Sports / Football Sexual Assault by hypman(m): 10:46am On Feb 13, 2016
Former Sunderland winger Adam Johnson 'abused position in society'

England footballer Adam Johnson "abused his revered position in society" when he had sexual contact with a 15-year-old Sunderland fan "in a way that he knew was both morally and legally wrong", prosecutors in court have said.

The girl contacted the 28-year-old player via Facebook shortly before New Year 2015, a jury at Bradford Crown Court heard today, and the two began exchanging messages before they met so he could sign shirts for her near a Chinese takeaway close to the girl's home.

The pair continued to exchange messages before meeting again at the same location in Johnson's black Range Rover on January 30, 2015.

Prosecutor Kate Blackwell QC told the court: "The Crown's case is that sexual activity took place, that the defendant and [the girl] kissed, with tongues, for some time during which the defendant unbuttoned her jeans and undid the zip."

Miss Blackwell said that the defendant then drove to "a more secluded place" where further sexual activity took place.

She told the jury of eight women and four men that the pair exchanged further messages after the encounter and Johnson told the girl: "It was class."

Johnson, who was yesterday sacked by Sunderland, has pleaded guilty to one count of sexual activity with a child and another of meeting a child following sexual grooming, but has denied two further counts of sexual activity with a child.

The trial was adjourned until Monday.

Education / Auchi Poly On Strike by hypman(m): 8:36am On Feb 12, 2016
As early as 7.00am this morning members of the joint union of ASUP and NASU were seen gathered at the Pavilion in the school’s main campus. They were numbered in hundreds putting on black cloths and chanting various versions of solidarity songs. Our correspondent who tried to get close and possibly take live pictures was restricted and his smart phone confiscated by the agitating members of the union. He was who later released on hearing he is a campus news reporter. The leader of the group, who addressed the crowd with a public address system was laudably heard saying “They want to idoghomise Auchi Polytechnic, should we allow them?”The crowd chorused “NO”“Idogho Campus”“Idogho Ict center”“Idogho Car wash”“Everywhere is Idogho, very soon federal Polytechnic Auchi will be renamed Idogho Polytechnic Auchi…”The leader spoke in length at the pavilion ground before the crowd moved to another section of the campus. A respondent who was among the crowd pleaded anonymity, when ask what they were there for he said: “We are here as we have been doing to make our grievances known, how can we be working for how many months and our entitlements and rights are denied us?Last year February each of our members, one grade was removed from our rank. That means our salary was reduced. Bros, you dey go market you know how things are going up. But our salaries has refused to go up. We know what our colleagues earn in other federal institutions…”Another respondent while responding to the question of how long the strike will last, said the last time a strike action happened lasted for about six months , he however attributed it to the insensitivity of the previous Goodluck Jonathan led Administration. He however hoped the Buhari led Government will look into this issue as they are the only hope for the suspension of the strike right now.Philipe Idogho will vacate her seat in less than 24 hours as the rector of the institution after serving for eight years. We contacted a senior member of the academic board to get the school management’s side of the story but he declined to give any information that he is not authorized to do such. The phone number of the rector is unreachable. The strike which started 6th of February is in day six. #Copied #from 1NYSC 2017 Mech Eng watsapps group

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp insists that Manchester City should have signed John Terry from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

The former England international, whose contract runs until the end of this season, recently announced that there would not be a “fairytale” retirement at Stamford Bridge.

The club told Terry – who earns a reported £150,000-per-week (via the Daily Mail) – that they would not be offering him a one-year contract extension.

QUESTION : Do you agree with Redknapp that City should have swung in to sign Terry on transfer deadline day?

news now

Jose Mourinho will begin a ruthless purge of the Manchester United squad by selling £37million Juan Mata and £27m Marouane Fellaini if he is given the job. The former Chelsea manager, who is in advanced talks to replace his friend Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, has told executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to sell the midfield pair.

QUESTION: Is this a good move or bad move by Mourinho if he eventually lands the top job at United?
