Politics / Nnamdi KANU Now On Wikipedia by IAfrica: 10:56pm On Dec 03, 2015
Nnamdi Kanu is a political activist based in the United Kingdom. He is a leading member of separatist organization Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the director of London-based radio station Radio Biafra.

On October 18, 2015, it was reported that Kanu had been arrested in Lagos State, Nigeria on October 17 by the Department of State Services (DSS). This generated mass protests across parts of Delta State, Enugu State, Rivers State, Cross River State, Abia State, Akwa Ibom State and Anambra State. On 5 September 2015, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was a guest speaker at the World Igbo Congress which was held in Los Angeles, California. Videos of the congress emerged and Kanu was seen soliciting for weapons from American based Igbos, so as to enable him wage a war in Nigeria.

On 20 October 2015, Vanguard announced that Kanu had been released on bail. However, media sources supporting the objectives of IPOB called the bail "controversial" and claimed the DSS announced the bail only "to calm the angry people of Biafra".

Politics / His Holiness Pope Francis Lands In Kenya, Begins African Tour (Pics) by IAfrica: 7:32pm On Nov 25, 2015
Pope Francis has brushed off security concerns as he arrived in Kenya for his first visit to Africa, a whirlwind tour of three countries that will mark the first time a reigning pontiff has flown into an active armed conflict.

His Alitalia aeroplane arrived at Jomo Kenyatta airport in Nairobi on Wednesday for the first stage of the pope’s visit, which will also take in Uganda and Central African Republic (CAR).

The latter country, which has a majority Christian population, has been in the grip of violence since Muslim rebels seized power in March 2013. More than one in five people have been forced to flee their homes.

When asked if he was concerned about security risks, the pope quipped: “To tell you the truth, the only thing I’m concerned about is the mosquitoes. Did you bring your spray?”

Francis was greeted by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nairobi’s governor, Evans Kidero, and others amid singing by traditional dance groups.

Speaking before his plane touched down, he said on Wednesday he wanted to offer spiritual and material support to Africans. “I am going with joy to Kenya, Uganda and the brothers of Central African Republic,” he said on the flight. “Let’s hope this trip brings better fruit, both spiritual and material.”

Large crowds held back by hundreds of police gathered along the road from the airport and cheered as the pope’s motorcade passed by.

After greeting Kenyatta, Francis was presented with a bouquet by a boy and a girl. Traditional dancers, some dressed in Maasai regalia, and choirs at the airport sang “karibu baba” in Swahili, lyrics which translate as “welcome father”. Later, Francis was welcomed by an honour guard at the state house and a 21-gun salute.

The pontiff wants to bring a message of peace and reconciliation to parts of Africa torn by extremist violence. Leaders in Africa heeded his message. Kenyan senator, Joy Gwendo, said she hoped the pope’s presence would help bring about the reconciliation of Kenyans divided along tribal lines.

But security concerns are so high that the pope could be forced to make changes to his itinerary for the final leg of the trip. On the eve of Francis’s departure, the Vatican spokesman, Rev Federico Lombardi, insisted there were no new threats and that the pope planned to carry on with his schedule. But in a sign that the Vatican was on alert, Francis’s chief bodyguard made a last-minute visit to CAR’s capital, Bangui, this week to get the latest security updates, and will meet the pope once he lands in Nairobi on Wednesday afternoon.

The bodyguard, Domenico Giani, said upon his departure that “some small modifications” could be made to the itinerary if risks emerged, especially for the civilian population or the UN peacekeeping operation.

Before he arrives in CAR, Francis is expected to discuss issues close to his heart in Kenya and Uganda, including poverty, the environment and the need for interfaith dialogue.

He is also likely to challenge the countries’ political leaders on corruption. Transparency International ranked Kenya 145 of 174 countries in its 2014 corruption perception index, while critics of the Ugandan president, Yoweri Musevni, said official corruption had thrived under his three-decade rule.

Francis is likely to raise the issue during his first meeting on Wednesday with Kenyatta, who declared this week that corruption is a national security threat to east Africa’s largest economy.

While in Kenya, Francis will also deliver an important environmental message at the UN environment programme headquarters on the eve of key climate talks in Paris. He will also visit a Nairobi slum and seek to encourage young Kenyan Christians after the attack by Islamist extremists that left almost 150 people dead at a college of mostly Christian students in April.

In Uganda, Francis will pray at the shrine to the country’s martyrs and celebrate a mass in their honour.

Some uncomfortable issues may also arise: the church’s opposition to condoms as a way to fight Aids, and its support of local legislation criminalising homosexuality are chief among them.

But on the whole, the pope’s visit is meant to tell the African church that it matters, said the Rev Robert Dowd, professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame. “It has a crucial role to play in promoting justice and peace in societies where governments are not always accountable or responsive.”

The pope is due to arrive in Bangui on Sunday. CAR has been volatile since early 2013, when Muslim rebels overthrew François Bozizé, who had been president for a decade. Unprecedented sectarian violence followed and has continued to erupt despite the presence of more than 11,000 peacekeepers and police.

Francis is expected to encourage an interfaith peace initiative involving the archbishop, the evangelical leader and Bangui’s imam.

Politics / Breaking News: Ijaw Leader Declares Support For Biafra by IAfrica: 10:15am On Nov 25, 2015
Comrade Joseph Evah, the national coordinator of the Ijaw Monitoring Group, has recalled that the Niger Delta people were against the Igbos during the civil war but are now ready to support them in their agitation for an independent Biafra state.

In an interview with Vanguard, Evah said the Niger Delta people made amends by participating in the burial of the late Chief Chukwuemeka Ojukwu who championed the Biafra civil war. He said the Igbos had forgiven the Niger Delta people which was why they were supporting them in their agitation.

There have been protests over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra by security operatives. There has also been renewed agitation for an independent state.

The Ijaw leader said: “The way the federal government is handling the Biafra agitation in the east is very dangerous. They are taking the wrong steps by ignoring the agitations that are going on. For the first time since the end of the civil war, we are seeing an organised agitation. The Igbo man cannot ordinarily abandon his business for something else, but now we are seeing Igbo men leaving their businesses in order to agitate.

That tells you that they are serious. Seeing them sacrificing their time, energy and money, should be enough to make the federal government interested in the matter. Threats by the army are not acceptable. We expect the government to tell us why they are detaining Kanu. Intimidation did not work when we had our Kaima Declaration during the military era. When they threatened us, we became resilient.”

On whether the Igbo people have a right to protest, he said:

“Yes, the Igbo have something to protest against just as the Ijaw man has something to protest against. Why are they denying the Igbo the right of seeing their son, who was arrested? They can’t be denied that right. I went to court to stop the dredging of the River Niger during the military era because there was no environmental assessment. The government under Abacha awarded the contract through the Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF. I went to my lawyer, Femi Falana and we stopped the dredging through legal process.

If the government had not obeyed the judiciary on the matter, we would have resorted to other alternatives which would not have been in the interest of the government. I questioned the justification for wanting to have a sea port in Baro in Niger state, while our ports in Warri, Koko and Akasa were moribund."

It wouldn't take him anything to wipe out all the idiots crying for secession.
They're just lucky Baba is a true Democrat!
It is the fundamental right of a people to fight for secession. The Scots did nobody persecuted anybody. The Palestinians are doing that now and even your Buhari supports them. So why should Biafra's case be different? I think you are just hating.

Roles and Responsibilities of the IMF

The IMF is mandated to:

Keep track of the global economy and the economies of its member countries. “The IMF oversees the international monetary system and monitors the financial and economic policies of its members. It keeps track of economic developments on a national, regional, and global basis, consulting regularly with member countries and providing them with macroeconomic and financial policy advice.”
Provide technical assistance to member countries. “To assist mainly low- and middle-income countries in effectively managing their economies, the IMF provides practical guidance and training on how to upgrade institutions, and design appropriate macroeconomic, financial, and structural policies.”
Lend to member countries. “The IMF provides loans to countries that have trouble meeting their international payments and cannot otherwise find sufficient financing on affordable terms. This financial assistance is designed to help countries restore macroeconomic stability by rebuilding their international reserves, stabilizing their currencies, and paying for imports—all necessary conditions for relaunching growth. The IMF also provides concessional loans to low-income countries to help them develop their economies and reduce poverty.”

Roles and Responsibilities of the World Bank

As previously mentioned, the World Bank is made up of the IBRD and the IDA. The functions of the IBRD are:

To end extreme poverty
To boost shared prosperity

“It seeks to achieve these goals primarily by providing loans, guarantees, risk management products, and expertise on development-related disciplines, as well as by coordinating responses to regional and global challenges.”

The IDA, on the other hand, is

“the largest multilateral source of concessional financing and the main instrument for pursuing the World Bank Group’s twin goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity in a sustainable manner in the world’s poorest countries. IDA’s funding supports countries’ efforts to increase economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve the living conditions of the poor.”

In summary, the IMF is to a great extent an economic think tank that sometimes functions as a development bank, while the World Bank is to a great extent a development bank that sometimes functions as an economic think tank. The World Bank's primary aim is assisting poor countries develop by giving them loans, expert advice and technical support; while the IMF is more concerned with policing the global economy and formulating policies that will create stability and forestall major economic crises.

Organizational Structure of the IMF

The IMF is chaired by a Managing Director, who is almost always from Europe. The IMF’s website says,

“The IMF is led by a Managing Director, who is head of the staff and Chairman of the Executive Board. The Managing Director is assisted by a First Deputy Managing Director and three other Deputy Managing Directors. The Management team oversees the work of the staff and maintains high-level contacts with member governments, the media, non-governmental organizations, think tanks, and other institutions.”

Organizational Structure of the World Bank

The World Bank is chaired by a President who has always been from the United States of America. According to the World Bank’s official website:

“The World Bank is like a cooperative, made up of 188 member countries. These member countries, or shareholders, are represented by a Board of Governors, who are the ultimate policymakers at the World Bank. Generally, the governors are member countries' ministers of finance or ministers of development. They meet once a year at the Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund.

“The governors delegate specific duties to 25 Executive Directors, who work on-site at the Bank. The five largest shareholders, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States appoint an executive director, while other member countries are represented by 20 elected executive directors.

“The World Bank Group president chairs meetings of the Boards of Directors and is responsible for overall management of the Bank. The President is selected by the Board of Executive Directors for a five-year, renewable term.”

Next in line after the President are the two Managing Directors (MD Chief Operating Officer and MD World Bank Group Chief Financial Officer), followed by the bank’s Corporate Secretary (who also doubles as the President’s Special Envoy), the three Senior Vice Presidents and the several Vice Presidents in that order.

The World Bank is a much bigger organization than the IMF. While the IMF has a staff strength of only about 2500 people, the World Bank boasts of over 7000 permanent and temporary staff.

Business / The Differences Between The IMF And The World Bank by IAfrica: 1:47pm On Aug 02, 2015
The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, collectively known as the Bretton Woods Institutions, are very similar international organizations that are often mistaken for each other. However, there are subtle differences between them. Below is a brief attempt at pointing out those differences, starting from their histories.

History of the IMF

According to the IMF website:

“During the Great Depression of the 1930s, countries attempted to shore up their failing economies by sharply raising barriers to foreign trade, devaluing their currencies to compete against each other for export markets, and curtailing their citizens' freedom to hold foreign exchange. These attempts proved to be self-defeating. World trade declined sharply, and employment and living standards plummeted in many countries.

“This breakdown in international monetary cooperation led the IMF's founders to plan an institution charged with overseeing the international monetary system—the system of exchange rates and international payments that enables countries and their citizens to buy goods and services from each other. The new global entity would ensure exchange rate stability and encourage its member countries to eliminate exchange restrictions that hindered trade.

“The IMF was conceived in July 1944, when representatives of 45 countries meeting in the town of Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in the northeastern United States, agreed on a framework for international economic cooperation, to be established after the Second World War. They believed that such a framework was necessary to avoid a repetition of the disastrous economic policies that had contributed to the Great Depression.

“The IMF came into formal existence in December 1945, when its first 29 member countries signed its Articles of Agreement. It began operations on March 1, 1947. Later that year, France became the first country to borrow from the IMF.

“The IMF's membership began to expand in the late 1950s and during the 1960s as many African countries became independent and applied for membership. But the Cold War limited the Fund's membership, with most countries in the Soviet sphere of influence not joining.”

History of the World Bank

The history of the World Bank mirrors that of the IMF. Along with the IMF, it was conceived at the Bretton Woods conference as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). As the original name implies, it was set-up to provide funds to aid countries in their post-WWII reconstruction efforts. Today, the World Bank is made up of the IBRD and the International Development Agency (IDA).
