A visually-impaired widow in Anambra State has fallen victim t a yet-to-be-identified woman who allegedly stole her Automated Teller Machine card and emptied her account of over N2 million within minutes.
The incident reportedly took place over the weekend at an ATM point in Nnewi, the Nnewi North Local Government Area.
According to bank officials, the theft was uncovered on Tuesday when the widow lodged a complaint about receiving multiple debit alerts.
CCTV footage from the bank revealed the moment the suspect swapped the victim’s ATM card with a fake one.
The 42-second video, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the suspect, dressed in a red top and black trousers, taking advantage of the elderly woman’s visual impairment under the pretence of offering assistance.
Recounting her experience at the bank on Thursday, the distraught widow said she had struggled to operate the ATM due to her visual impairment.
She said, “I went to the ATM to withdraw some cash, but I couldn’t operate the machine properly because of my condition. A lady standing nearby offered to help me.
“She took my card, got my PIN, and swapped it with an expired one. I was unaware of what had happened until I started receiving debit alerts on my phone. Within minutes, she had withdrawn over N2 million from my account.
“This is such a devastating experience, especially at a time when I desperately need funds to make transactions.” When contacted, a bank official who spoke on condition of anonymity urged customers, particularly vulnerable individuals, to avoid disclosing their PINs to strangers.
“The incident underscores the need for vigilance when using ATMs. If you encounter difficulties, seek assistance from authorized bank personnel instead of strangers,” the official said.
He added, “CCTV footage clearly shows the suspect swapping the victim’s card and proceeding to another ATM to withdraw the money. This act is extremely wicked.
“We call on security agencies and community members to help identify and apprehend the suspect. It is likely she resides within the community.”The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation had been launched to apprehend the culprit.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has ordered the deployment of all intelligence-gathering tools to track down the suspect.
Ikenga said, “The Command is aware of a trending video showing a lady at an ATM in Nnewi swapping the card of a 58-year-old visually-impaired woman and withdrawing N2 million in parts.
“The CP has directed investigators to reach out to the victim and gather all necessary information to aid the probe. We are also urging residents of Nnewi and surrounding areas to provide any useful information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect and her possible accomplices.”
Ikenga assured the public that the police would work tirelessly to bring the suspect to justice, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in tackling such crimes.

OALandAgents: Governance by eye-service and propaganda There is probably more than 2,000,000 elderly and they making propaganda by claiming to give pallaitive on 250 people, that means for every elderly they allegedly gave, approx 10,000 others got nothing meaning almost nothing was given.
provide for your Mama so that she will not be used to count scores
MadPolitician: There are stories of markets where human parts are sold in and around lagos by Ogun ritualists. Why are such markets in operation for years while the locals look the other way??
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has distributed the sum of N200,000 each to 250 elderly men and women drawn across the 21 local government areas of Anambra State.
The money and other palliatives were distributed under the Renewed Hope Initiative of the First Lady and were supervised by the Anambra State governor’s wife, Dr Nonye Soludo, at the Women Development Centre, Awka, on Wednesday.
Speaking while addressing the beneficiaries who came from the 326 wards of Anambra State, Soludo said the palliatives were provided by the First Lady to launch the second edition of the ‘Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme’ across all states of the federation.
Soludo said the exercise, themed, ‘Total wellness: Happy, healthy and prosperous lifestyle’, was designed to support the welfare of 250 elderly citizens, aged 65 and above in all 36 states of the federation annually.
She added that the scheme also covers beneficiaries from the federal capital territory and veterans from Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association.
The Anambra governor’s wife, who read Tinubu’s speech to the gathering, urged the beneficiaries to always prioritise their health and well-being by eating only natural foods and vegetables while advising them to ensure they avoid canned and processed foods for longevity.
She said, “I bring you greetings from Nigeria’s First Lady, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who this money came from and special appreciation to her. This programme is designed to support the welfare of our 250 elderly citizens annually.
“ The Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative has decided to increase the grant from N100,000 to N200,000 this year to provide further support to our elderly citizens during this festive season.
“A total of N1.9 billion will be disbursed across the country. The RHI coordinators in the 36 states of the federation, the FCT and DEPOWA have received N50 million each, out of which N200,000 will be distributed today to each beneficiary. In addition to this, free medical check-ups and other sundry items will be provided.
“I congratulate all our senior citizens who have been selected as beneficiaries. I urge you to remember to prioritise your health even as we all enjoy and celebrate the festive season.
“Eat well, stay hydrated, do little exercise like walking, and getting adequate rest. Spend quality time with loved ones and do what you enjoy and what makes you happy. I wish you all happy holidays and a prosperous 2025.”
Apart from the cash, the beneficiaries also received items such as wrappers, vegetable cooking oil and various health tips and wellness packages from the governor’s wife.
Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra said he met almost a war situation at the inception of his administration, with eight Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state under control of suspected criminals.
Soludo made the disclosure at a news conference on Tuesday in Awka, to mark his 33rd month in office and his efforts to address insecurity in the state.
He assured residents that in spite the “unique challenges of lucrative criminalities adorned with deceptive ideology and propaganda”, his administration was determined to make Anambra the safest state in the country.
“At the inception of our administration we met almost a war situation with eight LGAs literally under total control of criminals.
“We responded massively when we came in, and among other things set up a vigilance strike force that worked with federal security agencies to root out criminals from our forest.
“Within 12 months, we were able to recover those eight LGAs under siege. However, we noted that with time, all the criminal elements have returned to some of these locations.
“And there have been troubling reports of kidnapping for ransom with instances where lives were lost,” he said.
Soludo identified kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, drug epidemic and touting as the major security challenges ravaging in the state.
'Why crude oil production is declining in Anambra' According to him, another concern is the resurgence of criminals idolatry which offered the criminals a sense of invisibility.
He said the government had started tripling its efforts and would launch a comprehensive security ecosystem tagged – ‘Operation Udo Ga Achi’, by the end of January 2025.
“We will be donating 163 vehicles to security agencies to ensure active patrol of the nooks and crannies of Anambra, and install surveillance cameras to cover all major cities and forests used by criminals.
“We will have 20 vigilante personnel and forest guards in each community and work on changing the ideology where people see security agents as the enemy and the criminals as liberators.
“Government alone cannot do it, therefore, I call on our traditional rulers, religious leaders, town union leaders and civil society organisations to join the government to fight insecurity.
“Security is our collective responsibility. If you see something, say something by reporting crimes and criminals via the 5111 toll free line.
“We are also making sure we have a secured Christmas celebration,” he said.
The governor appreciated the Federal Government and service commanders for their efforts in securing residents in the state.(NAN)
Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has offered amnesty to criminals in the state, declaring that they have until the end of February 2025 to lay down their arms.
The governor also announced plans to launch a joint security operation to tackle insecurity in the state.
Soludo said the operation is codenamed ‘Operation Udo Ga Achi’, which means ‘Let Peace Reign’.
The governor who briefed journalists at the Anambra State Governor’s Lodge on Tuesday, said his government has identified armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and touting as the principal problems causing insecurity in the state.
He said: “As for touting, the State Anti-touting Agency codenamed SASA is tackling that in Onitsha and they are doing quite well.
“When we came in as governor, about seven local government areas were in the grip of hoodlums, but we took on them head on and liberated all those communities.
“Today, we hear that a handful of some of those criminals earlier dislodged have now come together and have been terrorizing the state.
“We have had reports of people being kidnapped, and vehicles snatched, but in the coming days, we will launch Operation Udo Ga Achi. We have procured here 168 patrol vehicles which would be distributed to various security agencies.
“Apart from the support we will be given the security agencies, we are also deploying ICT in the fight against insecurity.
“We are calling on criminal elements who would want to partake in our amnesty programme to come forward and surrender themselves and their arms. We are giving them from now to end of February to come and surrender and we will be ready to help them start life afresh.”
Speaking on the continuous incarceration of separatist leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and the fact that many of the criminals hide under the cover of his detention to perpetrate crime, Soludo insisted that indications have shown that what is happening is organized criminal enterprise and has nothing to do with Kanu’s detention.
He said: “I have been at the forefront of the call for the release of Kanu, I even said that in the worst case scenario, I was ready to keep him here at the Government House and produce him anytime he is needed.
“Part of the reason was that we really need to sit down, to interrogate this whole idea. But for people saying that the insecurity is because of his detention, I want to tell you that Nnamdi Kanu himself and IPOB, the organisation he leads, have made several press releases dissociating themselves from the kidnap for ransom and criminality that is ongoing.
“The truth of the matter is that criminals have now emerged, hordes of them organize themselves, using his (Kanu’s) name. I’m not so sure that even if he comes now and says stop that they will hear him. They have tasted blood and they will not stop. They go for kidnappings and they are making millions from it, so they will not stop.
“Imagine someone who is riding okada and they recruit him and he goes into the bush and all his life he has never had N100,000 at once and he joins the group and all of a sudden they do a successful kidnap operation and he gets one million or two from ransom. Tomorrow you think he will want to leave? In fact the one who tells him to leave the business will be his enemy.
“So the matter is much more complicated now and it is taking a life of its own. It is now lucrative business. All of them talking about agitation are just using that as a cover to get the sympathy of the people, especially those who are not informed. They present themselves as liberators. You are a liberator and you stay in the bush and you want us to believe you? They now add to it idolatry. The first thing they put in any town they go to is a massive shrine.”
The governor said henceforth, his government will begin to revoke lands of any community who harbour criminals. He added that members of such communities who give food or contribute money to take to them in the bush will be treated as collaborators.
He said “Also, any house that is found to have harboured kidnappers will henceforth become the property of the government.”
Irony1: Oga they are not igbo kidnappers stop deceiving yourself. These guys were all Yorubas.
see what Simon Ekpa said about them before you change the narrative
‘’These are Biafrans, they massacred them and tagged them criminals. We call on Biafrans in Lagos to mind their movement. The Nigeria establishment is out to destroy us, you must not give yourself so cheap to be used for propaganda against Biafra and ndigbo. Have you ever seen Yoruba criminals or Fulani criminals and terrorists killed like this in Yoruba land? Whatever happens, we call on Biafrans in Lagos to stay strong, we are almost at the end of the tunnel. Those of their terrorists in Biafraland will continue to collect Wotowoto‘’
Irony1: Bros try and have sense ehnn sometimes just shut up. This was the same way you lied about open defecation in Anambra state and kept mute when the holes in the write up was exposed.
Irony1: Oga where in Anambra are you from and your kindred? Look this insurgency in Anambra state is more than what we think. I was in Anambra state Idemili north at at time when the local government office was burnt and one thing struck me. In the whole state all federal, state and local government offices are heavily guarded with military men at the entrance and exits. Anambra state after Lagos is the state with the highest population density per square meter, which means it is limits the advantage of speed during an insurgency. Now on the day the local government office was burnt those heavily armed soldier were conveniently absent, and no one here in NL is asking questions why? Again no one is asking why is it that a state with a small land mass has insurgents operating despite speed being a disadvantage. There's a reason why you don't have bank robberies anymore in Lagos because they don't have the advantage of speed anymore they have to use the jetties which makes them vulnerable, and you now wonder why iy happen in Anambra despite the presence of military checkpoint every 20m and heavily armed presence at all government infrastructures and offices in the state.
they recently kidnapped one Bishop in anambra , you forget Uba that they wanted to kill? Dora Akuyili husband was killed like chicken all in anambra
Awka—Non-indigenes residing in Anambra State have raised concerns over escalating insecurity, declaring 15 out of the state’s 21 local government areas (LGAs) as unsafe.
Speaking through their chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Sani, and secretary, Chief Adebayo Adewusi, the group called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to declare a state of emergency in the affected areas.
They expressed particular worry about the deteriorating security situation in Onitsha, once considered relatively safe, which has recently come under attack by kidnappers and other criminals.
The group highlighted the alarming situation where even prominent individuals are targeted. For instance, the retired Anglican Archbishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Godwin Okpala, abducted in Ezinifite, Aguata LGA, has remained in captivity for almost a week.
The group identified several “no-go” areas across different LGAs:
Orumba Area: Ogbunka, Umunze, Ajali.
Aguata LGA: Ezinifite, Uga, Umuchu.
Ogbaru LGA: Ogbe-Ukwu near Iyiowa, Okoti, Ogwuaniocha, Ossomalla, Atani.
Ihiala LGA: Ihiala town, Mbosi, Azia, Uli, Amorka, parts of Okija.
Nnewi South LGA: Ukpor, Osumenyi, and surrounding areas.
Awka North LGA: Achalla, Mgbakwu, and nearby communities.
Awka South LGA: Noted for thriving cult activities.
Oyi LGA: Nsugbe, Nkwelle, and nearby communities.
Onitsha North and South LGAs: Fegge, Odoakpu, 3-3.
Idemili North and South LGAs: Abatete, Nkpor, Ogidi, Obosi, Oba, Ojoto.
Ekwusigo LGA: Ozubulu, Oraifite.
The group urged the state government to create joint security teams comprising the Armed Forces, Police, Civil Defence, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG).
“These agencies can eliminate the criminals if adequately equipped and motivated with insurance coverage and logistical support,” the group stated.
They further emphasized the urgency of addressing the insecurity before the festive season, noting that “if the governor wants Anambra people to return and enjoy Christmas, action must be taken immediately.”
The call for proactive measures underscores the rising tensions in the state, as residents fear for their safety and demand decisive action to restore peace and security.
