The authorities in Finland have frozen the assets of Simon Ekpa, the self-acclaimed Biafran agitator facing allegations of terrorism-related activities.
According to Yle, a local newspaper, the Finnish government also froze the assets of companies associated with Ekpa and four of his accomplices, who are also in remand.
The report said Ekpa is being held in the Kylmäkoski vankila, (Kylmäkoski prison), which is reputed to be one of the world’s toughest prisons.
On November 21, Ekpa was sent to prison for spreading terrorist propaganda on social media. A district court of Päijät-Häme remanded him after the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested him alongside four other men over alleged terrorist offences.
The self-declared Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile was said to have committed the crime in 2021 in Lahti municipality.
He is accused of instigating violence and inciting terror in the south-east of Nigeria through his social media pages.
There have been calls for the arrest of the separatist following his alleged involvement in the Sit-At-Home that has relatively crippled economic activities in the South East.
The authorities in Finland had stated that Ekpa’s offence is not bailable.
His trial is expected to commence in May 2025. https://dailytrust.com/terrorism-finland-freezes-simon-ekpas-assets/#google_vignette

IduNaOba: Sharap Osu was a very prestigious society just like Nze na Ọzọ. I was expensive to take on the title of osu. Over time it became corrupted by ndị church. Also some people who did not have money to take on the title dedicated themselves to deities to become their priest's assistants hence they gained the osu status. Others who were in danger dedicated themselves to deities to be protected and also gained the osu status.

Culture › The Osu Caste System In Igboland by iamfraud(op): 6:29am On Dec 14, 2024 |
In October, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, had taken a stance to abolish the Osu Culture in Igboland. Days before this, some traditional leaders in Oguta Local Government of Imo State had endorsed the abolishing of the age-long culture to free affected people from stigmatisation in the community.
The fight for the abolishment of the Osu Caste System goes back in time to the days of Nnamdi Azikiwe who in his historic address to the defunct Eastern Nigeria House of Assembly in 1956, described the system as “devilish and uncharitable to brand any human being with a label of inferiority due to the accidents of history”.
The late Dr Sam Mbakwe had banned the system in Old Imo State during his tenure as governor. Despite these attempts, they still uphold the Osu Caste system in some parts of Igboland with many people stigmatised for being Osus.
What is the Osu caste system? The Osu Caste System is an ancient practice in Igboland that discourages social interaction and marriage with a group of people, referred to as Osu (outcasts). This is because they dedicate these Osu people to the Alusis (deities) and are thus seen as inferior to the Nwadiala (free-borns).
This system has been traced back to a time when people were offered to the deities to clean the land from an abomination. Another view on the historical perspective of the Osus puts them as defiant people who simply refuse to head to the orders of the king or the decision of the community.
What happens to an Osu? As an Osu, you’re kept in a state of permanent and irreversible disability and subjected to abuse and discrimination. The Osus are made to live separately from the freeborn and live close to shrines and marketplaces. They are not allowed to have any forms of relations with the Nwadialas. They even may not break kola nuts at meetings or pour a libation or pray to God on behalf of a freeborn at any community gathering.
An Osu cannot marry a free born. It is because of this that there are tons of investigation in Igboland when marriages are announced. Elders from both sides travel and conduct investigations to inquire about the social status of the family.
Osu system in Igboland today Since modernisation in Igboland, people have criticised the Osu Caste System for defying the basic human rights. A couple of scholars have likened the Osu system to slavery and that it should be abolished.
However, it is still practised in some parts of Igboland, such as Oba in Anambra state . The maltreatment meted out to the Osu has forced many of them to migrate to other countries, abandon marriages and commit crimes against humanity in Igboland.
Abolishing this system will restore the dignity of human beings, promote peaceful relationships and reduce conflicts in society.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), through its Directorate of State (DOS), has called on Ndigbo and Biafrans to return to their homeland to celebrate the Christmas season, assuring that its Eastern Security Network (ESN) operatives will ensure safety and a peaceful atmosphere during the festive period.
In a statement signed by Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, the group reaffirmed its commitment to tackling insecurity in the South East region and emphasized its role in fostering peace and development.
IPOB described Alaigbo as a historically peaceful region and urged all Igbos to contribute to maintaining harmony, which is critical for the region’s economic growth. The group highlighted that peace and security in the South East should not lag behind other regions in Nigeria, even as it accused the Nigerian government of exacerbating insecurity in the region through militarization and alleged subjugation.
“We need peace to thrive as a strategic economic hub in Africa. Every Igbo man and woman must work towards peace and security in Alaigbo,” the statement read.
The group reiterated its commitment to securing investments in the South East and encouraged Igbos to bring their investments home to spur development and create job opportunities for the region’s youth.
IPOB warned criminals to steer clear of the South East, especially during the Christmas season, as ESN operatives and IPOB volunteers are actively working to make the region inhospitable for criminal activities. The group also accused the Nigerian government and its security forces of sponsoring insecurity as a pretext for continued militarization of the region.
“We call for the dismantling of all indiscriminate and illegal military, police, and other checkpoints in the South East. These checkpoints are sources of extortion, intimidation, and harassment of travelers,” the group stated.
IPOB highlighted the role of ESN operatives in safeguarding Biafran bushes and forests to prevent criminal elements from using them as hideouts. The group encouraged residents to contact ESN operatives when needed, through the published security information contact numbers.
The statement concluded with a call to all stakeholders to prioritize peace and development in Alaigbo, emphasizing IPOB’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and investments in the region.
As the festive season approaches, IPOB’s assurance of security by its ESN operatives aims to encourage more Biafrans to reconnect with their homeland and foster the region’s growth and stability. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/12/ipob-urges-ndigbo-to-return-home-for-christmas-assures-security-by-esn/amp/ |
