How could Edo have conquered Japan around the 17th century when they were not known to have had a seafaring tradition or a standing army capable of performing such a feat? Does it sound plausible that they had the capacity to travel all the way to Japan and conquer territory, yet a little over two centuries later they were easily overwhelmed and caved in to the invasion and sacking of their empire by just a handful of British invaders?

I think it would be more helpful and educationally enriching to have a discussion on why in the 17th to 19th centuries a empire as large, influential and as old as the Benin empire of the time didn’t have the knowledge, foresight and capability to build a army capable of defending its territory? Even the mighty Roman empire, the Mongol empire of Ghengis and Kublai Khan and ancient Egypt that existed centuries or thousands of years before the Benin empire knew the importance of having a powerful army and keeping abreast with all the latest military innovations, so what happened with the Binis?

I’m sure some of you watched the documentary on AriseTV over the weekend on the stolen artefacts of the Benin empire as well as the ancient civilisations that produced the Ife and Igbo-Ukwu bronzes. I was left wondering how the British colonial gov’t found it so easy to overrun Benin, depose their King and send him into exile while plundering his palace of all it valuables! I was left embarrassed as well as angry after watching it!
