Sports / Spanish Embassy Denies Future Eagles Visa For U16 Championship by IamSalt: 8:28am On Apr 09
Nigeria’s Future Eagles have pulled out of the forthcoming UEFA U-16 development tournament after the Spanish embassy denied them visa to travel for the competition.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the team’s withdrawal from the competition in a tweet on Monday.

“Players and officials of the Nigeria U15 team, Future Eagles, have been denied visas by the Spanish Embassy and will therefore not be travelling to participate in the UEFA U-16 Development Tournament starting on Friday,” the tweet reads.

The UEFA U-16 development tournament is an annual competition featuring four national teams. The tournament is focused on the development of young talents.

Although the competition is organised by UEFA, non-European nations are also invited to participate.

The 2024 edition is billed to be held at the Pinatar Arena Football Centre in San Pedro del Pinatar, Murcia, Spain.

According to NFF, the Future Eagles were given a “special invitation” to the tournament “as a result of Nigeria’s pedigree in youth football”.

The team was expected to leave for Spain ahead of the competition on Tuesday. They were scheduled to play Belgium in their first game on Friday before facing Italy and England in the other two matches.

Last month, the Future Eagles, coached by Patrick Bassey, travelled to Morocco in preparation for the tournament before returning to Nigeria to continue training for another week at the Remo Stars’ Sports Institute in Ikenne.

Earlier this year, the Super Eagles’ planned friendly match against Argentina in the US was also cancelled due to visa problems.

Emeks008:
Am sure, he's an Idoma man from his name.

Most people don't understand other people tradition before saying yes to their partner.

In Idoma land according to what I heard, if you are married to their sons, you must not cheat on him no matter what happens in the marriage. The moment you cheat, you will be dragged to the ALEKwu to take an oat. The outcomes of the oat can be Death.

Most times, their men are not faithful to their wives but the so called Deity' will not harm them but the moment the lady cheat, she can face terrible sickness or die if care is not taken.

Pls let's ask questions before we do inter tribal marriage. It's very important. Ask questions before jumping in. Don't be clouded by love. If you know you can't be faithful, pls stay away from Idoma / igala men. E get why!

Lemme explain it better for you.
1. A woman cheats and the husband is aware of her infidelity, if he does not invite the presence of his kinsmen(to be witness) and that of the wife's so the wife can swear an oath before them and he keep hitting the kpekus and eating her food, the man faces the consequences which may be death if the wife doesn't confess and appeal the gods when the man fall sick as a result of the above.

2. After the death of the man, if the wife still continue her infidelity, any food cooked for her children with the money realized from sleeping with other men will make the children a target for the gods. The target hierarchy will be from the first son to the second to the third continually until there's no son, then, unto the daughters until the woman is left with no child. She'll not be touched.

3. If the man's brother is aware of his brother's wife cheating but keep quiet about it, the man's brother faces the consequences.

4. If a man dies and any of his brother by any means(rape, man seduced the woman or the woman seduced the man) have canal knowledge of the desist wife without any rites being done, the brother faces the consequences.

5. In the case where the woman swears the oath, she faces the consequences of her antecedence by herself.

N.B: in some part of Idoma Land(not all Idoma as the one stated above act differently from the one I'll be stating below) if you're married to the man, once you cheat, you die.

If a woman practice family planning without her husband's consent she dies. If with her husband consent, the husband dies but this case can be averted if a rite is being performed before doing the family planning.

If you bring a woman to your father's house and have canal knowledge of her, you die.

If you give a woman head, you die.

FYI: the gods doesn't kill immediately. They can struck their victims with illness for a very long time until nothing is being done to avert this consequence, then, death follows. E be like last warning or second chance.

Politics / Buhari: I Am An Orphan, I Don’t Know My Father by IamSalt: 8:20pm On Jan 10, 2023
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday in Damaturu, Yobe State, said he is an orphan and does not know his father, but was enlisted in the Nigerian Army because he went to school.

President Buhari also urged eligible voters in the state and the northeastern part of the country to ensure that his party’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is elected in the forthcoming general elections.

He said this at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally at August 27 Stadium in Damaturu.

The President said a vote for Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, would guarantee the sustenance of progress made in the security, economy and education sectors of the country.

He vowed that following the victory against terrorists in the region, the APC-led government is more than ever before energised to defeat whoever threatens the unity of Nigeria.

The President, who addressed the mammoth crowd in Hausa language, recounted how Boko Haram inflicted damage on the people, their property and the economy, before their decimation by Nigeria Armed Forces and security agencies.

Emphasising the need for education in countering the despicable ideology of Boko Haram, the President told parents and guardians in Yobe: ‘‘Make sure you send your children to school and make them understand that whatever you have in this world can be taken away from you except the knowledge you have in your head.

‘‘I was an orphan; I did not know my father. I spent nine years in a boarding school and because of education I was enlisted into the Nigerian Army.

‘‘I want you to strengthen your faith, try your best to uphold the children and family God has entrusted to you. Do not betray that trust.”

[b]To the APC flagbearers in the forthcoming general elections, President Buhari challenged them to ensure good governance when elected and not to disappoint the electorate.
He declared that the governing party has done its utmost in the last eight years at the Federal level and would continue to ensure the progress, prosperity and stability of Nigeria.

Politics / Re: Nigeria 2023 Elections: Media Coverage Under Serial Suppression by IamSalt: 7:22pm On Jan 10, 2023
Assault on journalists

On November 1, the majority leader in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, reportedly assaulted Abdullahi Yakubu, a journalist working with the Leadership newspaper in Kano, the capital city of Kano State in northwest Nigeria.

Doguwa reportedly gave Yakubu a blow in his right ear when the journalist approached him to seek his account of a reported fight him (Doguwa) and Murtala Sule Garo, the APC candidate for deputy governor in Kano state.

However, Doguwa later apologised to Yakubu after the journalist dragged him to the magistrates’ court in the state.

On November 4, Kehinde Olatunji, a reporter with The Guardian Newspaper, was assaulted by Theophilus Akorede, an aide to the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor.

Akorede was said to have forcefully bundled Olatunji from Adediran’s campaign office because she had sat on the governorship candidate’s seat. Olatunji had to go to the hospital to be treated for minor pain and shock after the encounter.

On November 9, Mary Chinda, a journalist with Arise News, a privately owned television station, was injured after armed thugs attacked the convoy of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the forthcoming 2023 elections in Nigeria. The attack took place in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in northeast Nigeria and the epicentre of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

The media plays a critical role during elections by monitoring and reporting on the processes to ensure that they are transparent. They offer platforms for the contestants to amplify their manifestoes and also moderate discussions on the various issues at stake. When they are attacked, threatened or harassed, they cannot discharge this function effectively. The impairment of this crucial media watchdog role opens the door to abuse of the electoral process, with possible disputed outcomes.

In view of this, the MFWA calls on the government and all political parties in Nigeria to respect press freedom and ensure that journalists can work freely and safely before, during and after the general elections in February 2023.

Media houses shut down

In another move to suppress press freedom ahead of the 2023 elections, on October 15, 2022, the Zamfara state government, in northwestern Nigeria, shut down four broadcast stations: three television stations and a radio station.

The affected stations were the federal government-owned Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and Pride FM as well as privately-owned Gamji TV and Al-Umma TV. All the stations are located in Gusau, the state capital.

The ban on the stations followed their coverage of a political rally organised by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. The state governor, Bello Matawalle, is a member of the APC, President Buhari’s party.

However, two days after, after severe backlash, Matawalle reversed the order shutting down the media houses and tendered apologies to the outlets.

In a similar manner, on August 19, the broadcasting regulator, the National Broadcasting Commission, revoked the licences of 52 television and radio stations. Heavyweights including African Independent Television and Silverbird Television which are perceived to be opposition-leaning, were affected by NBC’s hammering.

NBC said the directive was consequent upon the stations’ indebtedness to it amounting to at least NGN2.6 billion (US$6.1 million). The regulator’s move has, however, provoked a flurry of criticisms by media and press freedom advocates as many wondered why NBC took the action in a period when the people required critical information that would define their choices in the upcoming 2023 elections.

On August 29, the Federal High Court in Lagos ruled against the Nigerian government’s decision to revoke the stations’ licences, maintaining that the media plays an essential role as a vehicle or instrument for the exercise of freedom of expression and information in the country.

Student activist arrested and detained

Another example which shows clearly that Buhari’s administration has not kept its word on upholding freedom of expression was the arrest of Aminu Adamu Muhammed, a 23-year-old final-year student of the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State, in northwestern Nigeria.

Aminu Adamu Muhammed was arrested for a tweet about the Nigeria’s First Lady| Source: BBC
Muhammed was arrested on November 8, 2022, by suspected federal security agents allegedly on the orders of President Buhari’s wife, Aisha. The student activist’s offence was a tweet he posted sometime on June 8 at which the first lady apparently took offense. In the Twitter post, the student trolled the first lady in Hausa: “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi,” whose literal translation means: “the mother has gotten fat by eating [the] masses’ money.” Muhammed posted his tweet alongside a recent picture of the now plump Aisha, compared to widely circulated pictures of her slender stature when her husband was being sworn in for his second mandate in 2015.

Eyewitnesses said the student was beaten by the security agents before being taken away from the university campus to Abuja, where he was detained in a prison facility till December 2.

Activist and lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, said if Mrs Buhari felt defamed, she should have sued the student for libel, adding that the use of security forces to arrest and detain the victim was evidence of the culture of crass impunity.

“Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees freedom of expression. It is not acceptable to deploy state apparatus in such a draconian, vindictive and oppressive manner the way Mrs Aisha Buhari has done to settle personal scores,” he said.

“We must stay united in supporting media professionals who work hard to de-escalate violent conflict and promote peaceful societies without compromising the responsibility to report,” he said, pledging to ensure the protection of the rights and privileges of journalists in the discharge of their professional duty.

But so far, the president’s administration has utterly failed to deliver on the assurances of press freedom. In the past few months since campaigns for the 2023 elections kicked off, there have been a clampdown on press freedom and freedom of expression, with several officials close to President Buhari among the culprits.

Campaign council demands journalists’ sacking

In one of the most recent cases, the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the president’s political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), allegedly asked that journalists Shaka Momodu and Rufai Oseni of the Arise Media Group be sacked by their employers over “unfavourable reportage” on the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Momodu is a columnist and the editor of THISDAY Newspaper, Oseni is a co-host of The Morning Show on the media group’s TV station, ARISE News.

In a joint editorial published on December 12, the boards of editors of THISDAY Newspaper and ARISE News disclosed that they had been receiving calls from some APC campaign officials who apparently were unhappy at the work of journalists Momodu and Oseni.

“We also note that two senior APC campaign officials had separately requested that we move THISDAY Editor and columnist, Shaka Momodu, and The Morning Show co-host on ARISE News, Rufai Oseni, from their current positions to stop the attacks or get a reprieve from a future Tinubu presidency,” a paragraph in the editorial reads.

The editorial specifically accused the APC PCC Special Adviser on Media and Strategic Communication, Dele Alake, and the Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, of mounting pressure for the sack of the journalists.

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) observes that the Arise media group have been having issues with the APC and candidate Tinubu’s camp.

In the build-up to the 2023 elections, ARISE News has been organising a series of town hall meetings in which presidential candidates from all political parties are invited to discuss their manifestos and share their visions for the Nigerian people.

Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the APC, has refused to participate in the town hall meetings. His team and social media followers have repeatedly attacked and accused ARISE News of bias.

In November, Alake of the APC campaign council wrote a petition against ARISE News regarding news aired by the station that the country’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was considering investigating Tinubu for alleged money laundering and drug trafficking cases.

INEC dismissed the news as false and the media regulator, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), fined RISE News to the tune of NGN2 million (US$4,500).

Nigeria will hold its seventh general elections in the democratic era in February 2023 with the build-up to the polls proving ominous for the media. President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired military general, had promised that one of the legacies he would leave behind is free and fair elections, in emulation of his predecessor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who is hailed to have handed over power after organizing rancour-free elections.

Buhari has also on multiple occasions touted his administration as having upheld press freedom and freedom of expression, and recently reaffirmed this position in the build-up to the 2023 polls.

Technology Market / Whatsapp To Enable Messaging In Internet Blackouts. by IamSalt: 6:12pm On Jan 10, 2023
Instant-messaging service WhatsApp is letting users connect via proxy servers so they can stay online if the internet is blocked or disrupted by shutdowns.

The technology giant, owned by Meta, said it hoped blackouts such as those in Iran "never occur" again.

They denied human rights and "cut people off from receiving urgent help".

WhatsApp is urging its global community to volunteer proxies to help people "communicate freely" and said it would offer guidance on how to set one up.

"Connecting via proxy maintains the same high level of privacy and security that WhatsApp provides," it blogged.

"Your personal messages will still be protected by end-to-end encryption - ensuring they stay between you and the person you're communicating with and are not visible to anyone in between, not the proxy servers, WhatsApp or Meta."

Juras Juršėnas, from proxy and online data collection company Oxylabs, told BBC News: "For people with government restrictions on internet access, such as was the case with Iran, usage of a proxy server can let people retain connection to WhatsApp and the rest of the free, uncensored internet.

"It will allow people around the world to stay connected even if their internet access is blocked by some malicious actors."

Science/Technology / WhatsApp down for millions of users globally. by IamSalt: 9:01am On Oct 25, 2022
App not working for group and individual chats; Twitter gets flooded with memes.

WhatsApp Down: Instant messaging app WhatsApp is down since some minutes past 8AM Nigeria time today as users are not able to send messages to group chats and only one tick was showing to messages sent to individuals. The messages sent to Group chats are not being delivered. Many WhatsApp users reported facing issues with their chats globally. Not only smartphone users but even WhatsApp web and WhatsApp desktop apps were also down. It's not clear how much time it will take WhatsApp to return to normalcy. Many users claimed that they switched on and off the Airplane Mode on their smartphones and even switched off and on their data services to see whether there was any problem with their smartphone network, only to later find out that WhatsApp is down for millions of users.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp and Facebook, said that they are working to resolve the issue. "We're aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we're working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible," said a Meta Spokesperson.

It may be noted that WhatsApp has around 500 million users alone in India and over 2.5 billion users globally. WhatsApp witnesses over 5 billion messages everyday. "5.5 billion unencrypted SMS are sent every day. With WhatsApp, your messages won’t be one of them. Step-up to a new era of personal privacy with automatic end-to-end encryption," said the instant messaging platform in a Tweet on October 17.

Meanwhile, social media users flooded Twitter with WhatsApp down memes. Several users noted that they came to Twitter to check if WhatsApp was down for all users.

"coming to see if whatsapp’s down with the one ticks," wrote a Twitter user.

UNITED NATIONS — Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sounded the alarm over the war in Ukraine, nuclear threats in Asia and the Middle East, and other tensions, warning that “humanity is just one misunderstanding, one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation.”

The warning came Monday as a pandemic-delayed conference opened to review the 50-year-old Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which is aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and eventually achieving a nuclear-free world.

The threat of nuclear catastrophe was also raised by the United States, Japan, Germany, the U.N. nuclear chief and many other opening speakers.

Russia, which came under criticism from some speakers, didn’t give its address in its scheduled slot Monday but was expected to speak Tuesday. China’s representative was scheduled to speak Tuesday.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said North Korea is preparing to conduct its seventh nuclear test, Iran “has either been unwilling or unable” to accept a deal to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement aimed at reining in its nuclear program, and Russia is “engaged in reckless, dangerous nuclear saber-rattling” in Ukraine.

He cited Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warning after its Feb. 24 invasion that any attempt to interfere would lead to “consequences you have never seen,” emphasizing that his country is “one of the most potent nuclear powers.”

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said divisions in the world since the last review conference in 2015, which ended without a consensus document, have become greater, adding that Russia’s threat to use nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war has contributed “to worldwide concern that yet another catastrophe by nuclear weapon use is a real possibility.”

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Moscow’s “reckless nuclear rhetoric” since its invasion of its smaller neighbor “is putting at risk everything the NPT has achieved in five decades.”

Putin appeared to roll back on his nuclear warning in a message of greetings to NPT participants posted on his website Monday.

“We believe that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought, and we stand for equal and indivisible security for all members of the world community,” the Russian leader said.

Blinken also noted Russia seized Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya and is using it as a military base to fire at Ukrainians, “knowing that they can’t and won’t shoot back because they might accidentally strike a nuclear reactor or highly radioactive waste in storage.” He said this brings the notion of having “a human shield to an entirely different and horrific level.”

Russia’s delegation to the NPT issued a statement Monday night strongly rejecting Blinken’s contention that Russia is using the Zaporizhzhya plant as a military base, saying a limited number of servicemen are there “to ensure safety and security at the power plant.”

Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said the Ukraine conflict is “so grave that the specter of a potential nuclear confrontation, or accident, has raised its terrifying head again.”

He warned that at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant “the situation is becoming more perilous by the day,” and he urged all countries to help make possible his visit to the plant with a team of IAEA safety and security experts, saying his efforts for the past two months have been unsuccessful.

Guterres said the month-long review conference is taking place “at a time of nuclear danger not seen since the height of the Cold War.”

The conference is “an opportunity to hammer out the measures that will help avoid certain disaster, and to put humanity on a new path towards a world free of nuclear weapons,” he said.

But Guterres warned that “geopolitical weapons are reaching new highs,” almost 13,000 nuclear weapons are in arsenals around the world, and countries seeking “false security” are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on “doomsday weapons.”

“All this at a time when the risks of proliferation are growing and guardrails to prevent escalation are weakening,” he said, “And when crises — with nuclear undertones — are festering from the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and to many other factors around the world.”

Guterres called on conference participants to take several actions: urgently reinforce and reaffirm “the 77-year-old norm against the use of nuclear weapons,” work relentlessly toward eliminating nuclear weapons with new commitments to reduce arsenals, address “the simmering tensions in the Middle Est and Asia” and promote the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

“Future generations are counting on your commitment to step back from the abyss,” he implored the ministers and diplomats. “This is our moment to meet this fundamental test and lift the cloud of nuclear annihilation once and for all.”

Japan’s Kishida, recalling his home city of Hiroshima where the first atomic bomb was dropped in August 1945, echoed many of Guterres’ points saying the path to a world without nuclear weapons has become harder but “giving up is not an option.”

In force since 1970, the Nonproliferation Treaty has the widest adherence of any arms control agreement, with some 191 countries that are members.

Under its provisions, the five original nuclear powers — the United States, China, Russia (then the Soviet Union), Britain and France — agreed to negotiate toward eliminating their arsenals someday and nations without nuclear weapons promised not to acquire them in exchange for a guarantee to be able to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

India and Pakistan, which didn’t join the NPT, went on to get the bomb. So did North Korea, which ratified the pact but later announced it was withdrawing. Non-signatory Israel is believed to have a nuclear arsenal but neither confirms nor denies it.

The meeting, which ends Aug. 26, aims to generate a consensus on next steps, but expectations are low for a substantial — if any — agreement.

Science/Technology / The Next Horizon: Key Drivers & Technical Pillars That Will Shape 6G by IamSalt: 5:28pm On Aug 02, 2022
The 6G: The Next Horizon White Paper presents a holistic view of our 6G vision, exploring 6G key capabilities, new use cases and requirements, new building blocks, and paradigm shifts in air interface and network architecture designs. In part 2 of this series, we look at the key drivers and technical pillars that will shape 6G.

Underpinned by these drivers and pillars, 6G is expected to build on 4G and 5G, which respectively connected people and things, and achieve “connected intelligence”.

1. 6G: The Next Horizon

Key drivers
In the white paper, we outline three key drivers that are leading mobile communications toward a new era of connected intelligence.

Driver 1: New applications and new business

Each mobile generation has been driven by the needs of certain typical applications. 1G was characterized by voice calls, 2G by text messaging, 3G by multimedia, 4G by bandwidth-hungry applications such as video streaming, and finally 5G by applications requiring massive connectivity and low latency, such as IoT and VR/AR. Similarly, 6G will be defined by a new generation of applications with all-new needs. Such applications will include:

. Next-generation extended reality (XR): Haptic feedback and holographic display will be major features of next-generation XR applications — especially in scenarios such as the metaverse — and will have exponentially higher requirements on bandwidth and latency.

. Automation: Big data required for training AI algorithms will further drive the need for orders-of-magnitude higher throughput.

Driver 2: Proliferation of intelligence

Future business and economic models will be increasingly dependent on “pervasive intelligence”; that is, the use of machine learning (ML), brute-force computing, and big data analytics in more and more scenarios. This will require 6G networks to provide four native capabilities:

. Native AI support: To improve performance while meeting data ownership requirements, AI will need to be run at the edge. This will need to be fully considered in the 6G network architecture, ultimately achieving “Networked AI”.

. Native data protection: To empower users with full control and operation of their data, data protection will need to be baked into the 6G design.

. Native trustworthiness: The 6G design will need to ensure trustworthiness can be customized, verified, and measured, and take into account the many-party, many-player, and many-actor nature of network ownership and operation.

. Native diversified ecosystem: A universal ICT framework will need to be created to enable all industries to benefit from the rollout of 6G.

Driver 3: Sustainability & social responsibility

As the whole world focuses on achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 6G networks will be designed to be cost- and energy-efficient when it comes to deployment, operations, monitoring, and management. This will ensure that the increasingly heterogeneous services 6G will support can run without hindering the sustainability and social commitments being made by industries and countries worldwide.

Overall vision and capabilities

Guided by the three key drivers described above, 6G will need to develop six key capabilities, which we refer to as “pillars”.

Pillar 1: Native AI

AI will be both a service and a native feature in the 6G communications system. This is better explained by two concepts, “AI for Network (AI4NET)” and “Network for AI (NET4AI)”:

. AI4NET: AI will be built into the 6G air interface and network designs, customizing the optimization and automated operations, administration, and management (OA&M).

. NET4AI: Each 6G network element will natively integrate communication, computing, and sensing capabilities, replacing centralized intelligence in the cloud with ubiquitous intelligence at the edge. This is also known as “AI as a Service (AIaaS)”.

Pillar 2: Networked Sensing

6G systems will integrate wireless signal sensing and communication, each enhancing the other. This covers two concepts:

. Network as a sensor: the communication system will act as a sensor to give us greater understanding of the physical world. Key use cases will include high-accuracy localization and tracking; simultaneous imaging, mapping, and localization; augmented human senses; and gesture and activity recognition.

. Sensing-assisted communication: high-accuracy localization, imaging, and environment reconstruction capabilities could help improve communication performance; for example, achieving more accurate beamforming.

Pillar 3: Extreme Connectivity

6G will build on 5G by making comprehensive improvements in all metrics, delivering order-of-magnitude improvements to peak rate (1 Tbit/s), experienced rate (10-100 Gbit/s), latency (sub-ms), connection density (10x 5G), localization accuracy (cm-level), and much more. These improvements will be made possible as 6G moves into uncharted spectrums such as THz and even visible light.

Pillar 4: Integrated NTN

In recent years, there has been a resurgence in satellite communication as we try to connect even the most remote corners of the earth. However, such non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) have so far been entirely separate from their terrestrial counterparts. This will all change with 6G, which will fully integrate all types of terrestrial networks and NTNs — including satellites, drones, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and high-altitude platform stations (HAPSs) — for unified billing as well as ultimate experience by selecting the optimal access point at any one time.

Pillar 5: Native Trustworthiness

6G will integrate numerous capabilities, including communication, sensing, computing, and intelligence, requiring a new network architecture to be defined. In this architecture, trustworthiness — the overarching term for security, privacy, resilience, safety, and reliability — must be a native feature. This will be achieved with native features such as new data governance architectures that support data compliance and monetization, as well as advanced privacy protection and quantum attack defense technologies.

Pillar 6: Sustainability

To stay ahead of global sustainability initiatives while delivering optimal service performance and experience, 6G aims to improve energy efficiency (defined in bits per Joule) 100-fold across the network and keep total energy consumption (measured in Joules) lower than 5G. 6G will achieve this through major upgrades in terms of architectures, materials, hardware components, algorithms, software, and protocols. For example, dense network deployment could lead to a shorter propagation distance, while a centralized RAN architecture would result in fewer cell sites and higher resource efficiency.

Sports / Who Is "Guy Forget??" by IamSalt: 9:30pm On Jul 12, 2022
Guy Forget (French: [ɡi fɔʁʒɛ]; born 4 January 1965) is a French tennis administrator and retired professional player. During his career, he helped France win the Davis Cup in both 1991 and 1996. Since retiring as a player, he has served as France's Davis Cup team captain.

Career
Forget first came to the tennis world's attention as an outstanding junior player who won the French Open junior title in 1982. He turned professional later that year.

His breakthrough year on the professional tour was 1986 when he made it to the fourth round of Roland Garros, his best grand slam at that point, and won his first top-level singles title in Toulouse, where both his father and grandfather had won, respectively in 1966 and 1946, and where he won again in 1991 and 1992. He was also part of the French team which won the World Team Cup. Forget also won six doubles titles in 1986, reaching his career-high doubles ranking of World Number 3 in August that year, finishing in the runner-up spot with partner Yannick Noah at the 1986 ATP Tour World Championships tournament.

In 1987, Forget and Yannick Noah finished runners-up in the men's doubles at the French Open. In 1990, Forget partnered with Jakob Hlasek to win the ATP Tour World Championships doubles title.

1991 was the most memorable year of Forget's career. He won six singles titles that year, the biggest coming at the ATP Masters Series events in Cincinnati and Paris. In both finals, he defeated Pete Sampras. He reached his career-high singles ranking of World Number 4 in March that year.

Forget was a member of the French team which won the 1991 Davis Cup. In the final, France faced the United States. Forget teamed up with Henri Leconte to win the doubles rubber, and then won the decisive singles rubber against Pete Sampras as France shocked the heavily favoured US team to win 3–1.

1996 was another notable year in Forget's career. Partnering Jakob Hlasek, he again finished runner-up in the men's doubles event at the French Open. He also won what proved to be his last career singles title in Marseille. For a second time, he was on a French team which won the Davis Cup. In the final, he teamed-up with Guillaume Raoux to win a critical doubles rubber, as France defeated Sweden 3–2.

Forget played for France's Davis Cup team for 12 years, compiling a 38–11 record.

Forget retired from the professional tour in 1997. During his career, he won a total of 11 top-level singles titles and 28 doubles titles. His career prize-money earnings totalled US$5,669,934.

After retiring as a player, Forget served as France's Davis Cup team captain. He also served as France's Fed Cup team captain from 1999–2004; his best result was France's performance in 2003 (with a squad including Mary Pierce, Amélie Mauresmo, Émilie Loit & Stéphanie Cohen-Aloro) when they defeated USA in the final. However, he resigned in 2004 to focus on his Davis Cup duties, and the French team then lost to Russia in the final (when Marion Bartoli & Émilie Loit lost to Anastasia Myskina & Vera Zvonareva in the last, deciding doubles match).

In 2011, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) presented him with its highest accolade, the Philippe Chatrier award, for his contributions to tennis.

He joined the directing committee of the French Open in 2011, and in 2012 he became director of the Masters of Paris Bercy.

In 2016, he became director of the French Open after the dismissal of Gilbert Ysern.

To ensure he will never be forgotten, Forget has been immortalized in the song "Guy Forget" by the band Phish, with the lyrics "I never met a man I could not forget, except for Guy Forget".

Crime / Mob Lynches Sokoto College Student Over Alleged Blasphemy by IamSalt: 4:46pm On May 12, 2022
The deceased was accused of making derogatory comments against the prophet on a WhatsApp platform of the students.

Some students of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, on Thursday, lynched a female student, identified simply as Deborah, over an allegation of blasphemy against Muhammed, a prophet of Islam.

The deceased was violently stoned to death and later set ablaze by the angry mob, who are mostly students of the college.

The college authorities immediately announced the closure of the school and ordered students to vacate the campus.

Alleged offence
The deceased, whose details were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, was seen in a video that has gone viral on social media being violently attacked until she collapsed and was set ablaze.

She was said to have made “derogatory comments” against the prophet on a WhatsApp platform.

How it happened
A student of the college identified only by her first name, Jamila, narrated to PREMIUM TIMES how the incident started on Wednesday.

She said it all started when someone sent a broadcast message to a WhatsApp group of the students, to which Deborah, the murdered student, belonged.

“It was that kind of message that will ask you to share with other groups if you don’t want evil to befall you,” said Jamila.

But the now deceased Deborah complained that such messages should not be sent to a WhatsApp group created for the sharing of important information about tests and assignments.

“Send us important information. This group was not created for you to send useless information. It was created for you to send past questions if there is a test or an assignment. It is not for you to send useless information. Which prophet?”, the late Deborah was quoted to have stated this in a voice note she shared to the WhatsApp group.

Jamila said although she later deleted the voice note, other members of the group had shared it among their friends in the school. It eventually sparked tension among the students on the campus.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt that when the students tried to mob Deborah, the school’s security men came to her rescue. They informed the police when the situation started to get out of hand.

But a resident of Bado, the host community of the college, Ibrahim, said the police couldn’t rescue Deborah as the mob kept hurling stones and objects at the police and the shelter where she was kept.

The shelter, which was originally a cell where the school security locked up thieves caught on the campus, has also been burnt down by the mob.

Politics / Monguno: Zulum Shares ₦275 Million, Food, Clothes To 90,000 Displaced Families by IamSalt: 9:50am On Apr 16, 2022
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has been on a trip to Monguno since Thursday, supervising the distribution of N275m alongside with bags of food and clothes to 90,000 households that are internally displaced.

This kind of intervention which Zulum has sustained in the last three years is part of his multi-faced efforts to melow the resilience of communities affected by Boko Haram attacks, supporting them with livelihoods as they gradually transit into farming, micro, small, and medium scale businesses in order to eventually cater for themselves.

The cash support has also been an effective tool in fighting Boko Haram’s ability to recruit spies from extremely poor and vulnerable communities, by offering some residents as low as N5,000 as financial incentives.

Zulum, alongside the Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Barr. Mohammed Tahir Monguno travelled by road from Maiduguri on Thursday, passed the night in Mafa, his hometown, and arrived Monguno on Friday morning to commence humanitarian activities.

Monguno has been host to internally displaced persons from about five Local Government Areas in the fringes of the Lake Chad, as well as refugees who returned from Niger Republic after fleeing from Boko Haram’s attacks between 2013 and 2014.

After interacting with the IDPs and returned refugees in Monguno, Governor Zulum on Friday, supervised distribution of wrapper, sugar, and N5,000 each to 55,000 women, making a total of N275 million.

After dealing with women throughout the day, Zulum began midnight supervision on Saturday, to reach 35,000 male heads of households who had lined up in anxious anticipation. Each of the men was provided two big bags of rice and maize grits.

The combined numbers of male and female beneficiaries made up 90,000.

Governor Zulum during his late night activities, visited the general hospital to monitor healthcare services by medical personnel.

Governor Zulum traveled to Monguno in company of Government officials undertaking construction of over 1,000 houses in Monguno, rebuilding of existing homes, healthcare and water facilities, schools and markets.

Among the Government officials were the State’s Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, Commissioners of Justice, Barr. Kaka Shehu Lawan, Agriculture, Engr Bukar Talba, and other relevant stakeholders.

Politics / BENUE KILLINGS: Buhari Has Failed Where It Matters Most —group by IamSalt: 9:39am On Apr 16, 2022
A socio-cultural group in Benue State Mzough U Tiv (MUT) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of failing to live up to his promises of tackling insecurity in the country following a spate of renewed attacks and killings in the state by Fulani militia.

President General of the Mzough U Tiv Worldwide, Chief Iorbee Ihagh, who made the accusation on Friday at a press conference in Makurdi, the state capital, said the wanton killings in the state were clear signs that “President Buhari has been overwhelmed and has failed where it matters most.”

Chief Ihagh who is also the Chairman of Leaders of Benue Ethnic Socio-cultural Groups, lamented the renewed killings in Benue, Plateau and Kaduna States by bandits, insisting that Buhari had become helpless and was incapable of ruling Nigerians and should honorably step aside.

“The truth is that the President has become helpless because the situation has overwhelmed his government and they are refusing to accept that fact.

"This government and the President has failed and cannot stop these killings and they have left everyone to believe the claims making the rounds that they were the ones that brought these people into the country and cannot control them anymore.

"Every day, Nigerians are being killed and nobody says anything aside telling us that they are on top of the situation, yet nothing is done about it.

“President Buhari is failing in his duties. How can you preside over the killings in Nigeria after you swore to an oath to defend Nigerians? The killings are too many.

“The President must sit up or step aside because Nigeria is currently pregnant. Everyday people are being killed and we have a President who is doing nothing.

“Why did we then elect him if he came to watch the people being killed in the manner it is happening and he is not doing anything? It gives the impression that you are part of it because you are not doing enough to stop it,” he said.

Politics / Abubakar Umar To FG: Forget Census, Secure Nigeria First by IamSalt: 9:26am On Apr 16, 2022
A former military governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (rtd), yesterday asked the Federal Government to suspend its plan to conduct Nigeria’s next census in April 2023.

He said government should first secure the country before conducting a census.

He said census was not a priority for the country at this point in time.

Umar, who is also the chairman of the Movement for Unity and Progress, made his position known in a statement in Abuja.

“The decision of the Federal Government of Nigeria to seek and get the approval of the National Council of State to conduct national census in April 2023 must have come as a great shock to most well-meaning Nigerians,” he said.

Continuing, Umar said: “A country that is facing existential challenges such as unprecedented level of insecurity, collapsing economy cannot have as one of its priorities the conduct of a national census.

“We therefore urge the Buhari administration to suspend what will amount to misadventure and waste of scarce national resources.

“This Administration should focus all its attention on securing the nation and conducting the 2023 elections.

“A national census at this point is certainly not a priority, assuming that its conduct is possible.”

The census issue was one of the decisions taken at Thursday’s meeting of the Council of State in Abuja.

The Director General, National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa-Kwara, said the commission would conduct a pilot census in June after the political parties would have concluded their primaries.

The last national census was held in 2006.

Crime / Two Female Prisoners Fall Pregnant After Having Sex With Transgender Inmate by IamSalt: 6:32pm On Apr 15, 2022
Two women are pregnant after they had consensual sex with a fellow prisoner at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, New Jersey, it is claimed in a letter from another inmate.

Two inmates of a women only prison have fallen pregnant after having consensual sex with a transgender inmate, it has been reported.

The women are among 800 people, including 27 transwomen, being held at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, New Jersey.

In a letter sent to US outlet NJ 105.5, an inmate claimed that one of the women, who is not eligible for parole until 2104, was five months pregnant.

The letter said that the inmates had a history of sex acts in public areas and had to be separated.

Demi Minor has claimed to be the person responsible for impregnating the two prisoners via a website Justice 4 Demi, which she is understood to help run from prison.

It claims that she was sentenced to 30 years inside at the age of 16 for manslaughter, and that she has now been approved for correctional surgery.

A woman claiming to be the mother of one of the children has written a blogpost on the website, titled 'Freedom, Love, Pregnancy and Trauma'.

"Surprisingly I am three months pregnant and I conceived while incarcerated here at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility," she wrote.

"Although Edna Mahan breeds a 'pervasive culture of rape', I WAS NOT RAPED, nor was I forced to do anything that I did not want to do.

"Despite it not being permitted I fell in love and had consensual sex with a woman who is trans. Consensual sex is a prohibited act in Edna Mahan."

The woman added that she found “love in a hopeless place" - a quote from a Rhianna song - and that she is 31 and serving a life sentence.

New Jersey prisons began housing transgender inmates who identify as women at women's prisons last year following a lawsuit at the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.

The lawsuit followed claims from a transgender woman who said she was abused at a male prison.

New Jersey's policy does not require trans women inmates to undergo gender-reassignment surgery to be held in the facility.

It has received some pushback, with two Edna Mahan prisoners filing a lawsuit seeking to end New Jersey’s gender identity policy for prisons, it has been reported.

They claimed that they were harassed by trans inmates and that transgender inmates were having sex with female prisoners.

NJ PBA, a union for state correction officers, has also criticised the policy.

President William Sullivan told NJ.com: "We opposed this policy change believing it would be detrimental to the general population of female inmates being housed at Edna Mahan and also bring added stress to our correctional police officers assigned to this institution."

ACLU legal director Jeanne LoCicero has argued that allowing trans-women into women's prison protects their rights.

"(It's) in line with New Jersey's strong anti-discrimination laws that prevent discrimination and harassment on the basis of gender identity," she wrote.

An investigation has been launched into the pregnancies.
