The 7 expatriate contractors, including three Australians and a South African, have been released unharmed 4 days after they were kidnapped by gunmen in Calabar, Cross River State, Reuters reports
The Cross River State Security Adviser SSA, Mr. Jude Ngaji, who confirmed the report told CrossRiverWatch that the expatriates were released early today (Sunday) morning.
Ngaji debunked claims that ransom was paid for their release. He also disclosed that all the foreigners were released unhurt without any injury while the two Nigerians sustained minor injuries possibly from torture by the kidnappers.
“I can confirm to you that all the kidnapped persons have been released this morning. All the white guys were released unhurt without any issues, but the two black guys, the Nigerians sustained some minor injuries possibly from torture.”
When questioned whether ransom was paid, the SSA said “Government does not pay ransom. I don’t know anything about any ransom. If any was paid, I am not aware and it was not paid by this government or any of the security agencies. I only know that the various security agencies collaborated and did their work very well and commendably to secure the release of the hostages.”
Mr. Ngaji who could not say whether any of the kidnappers were arrested however promised that none of them will go unpunished.
“In the course of the work to release the victims, the security agents gathered a lot of information about the kidnappers and their activities and I want to assure the public that none of them will go unpunished. I don’t want to speak too much on that.” He said.
Cross River State Commissioner Jimoh Ozi-Obeh said they were released “unhurt” but gave no further details.
However, a top security source told CrossRiverWatch that an undisclosed amount of money was paid to the kidnappers to free the victims. The security agencies are on the trail of the kidnappers to make sure they are arrested eventually and brought to book.
Meanwhile there are indications that most of the foreigners who work for the Lafarge Cement factory in Mfamosing, Akamkpa LGA have deserted their duty posts because of the development.

Members of the National Assembly caucus in both the Senate and House of Representatives from Ekiti State have cautioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), against allowing itself to be used to intimidate or harass Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State by the Federal government.
The caucus unequivocally condemned the freezing of the bank accounts belonging to Ekiti state Governor by the EFCC, describing it as absolutely illegal, and an affront to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The release issued on Sunday and signed on behalf of the caucus by the Senate Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi reads;
“our attention has been drawn to the freezing of the bank accounts belonging to Ekiti State governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose by the EFCC and we wish to state that the actions violates the constitution of Nigeria, which conferred immunity on the governor and the EFCC Act, which mandates the Commission to obtain a valid court order before bank accounts of anyone can be frozen”.
“It is trite that the condition precedent to be fulfilled by the EFCC to fully exercise its powers as enshrined in section 34(1) of the EFCC Act, with effect to the freezing order on banks and other financial Institutions was not met. Ditto for the fact that for the court to make such an order, there must be papers (Court Process) filed in court and signed by a Judge.
“By the provision of section 308(1) (a) of the 1999 constitution (as amended), no suit can be instituted against any sitting Governor in any court in Nigeria. Therefore, no process of the court can be issued, signed or served against Mr. Ayodele Fayose, being a sitting Governor. Knowing fully well that the import of section 308 of the 1999 constitution (as amended), is principally to avert unnecessary distraction of any sitting governor and other beneficiaries of that section.
“As much as we are not against the anti – corruption crusade of the government or the investigation of corruption persons by the EFCC, we urge the anti-corruption agency to carry out its functions without political interference from any quarters, while the Federal government on its part, must eschew all actions capable of destabilizing the peace of any state, or threaten our nascent democracy.”

Three children of a pastor were on Thursday, June 23 attacked by suspected cultists near Benue State University second campus in Makurdi.
The victims, who are children of NKST Church pastor, Reverend Akpen Leva reportedly confronted a group of suspected cult boys who had earlier snatched the phone of the youngest sibling and the cultists attacked them with machetes.
The siblings sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital were they are currently receiving treatment.
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who paid a visit at the hospital condemned the attacks and assured that the culprits will be immediately arrested and charged.

Two inmates of Kuje Prison in Abuja are currently on the run. The inmates who are awaiting trial, escaped by scaling the fence of the prison yesterday at about 7pm. Above is a Photo of the fence of the prison. According to Sahara Reporters, the names of the inmates on the run are Maxwell Ojukwu from Delta and Solomon Amodu from Kogi. There were speculations earlier today that the suspected mastermind of the 2010 Independence day bombing, Charles Okah who is being held in the prison, was among the inmates that escaped but the prison authority’s have refuted the claim.

41 Nigerian men were deported from the United States for drug, police and immigration related offences today June 22nd. The deportees landed Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos at about 12pm on a chartered aircraft operated by Miami Air International. Nine of them were deported on drug related offences, 26 for police offences while six had immigration related problems.
