I write to you today not as one who has all the answers, but as a fellow traveler on this difficult journey of faith, with a heart that aches for the brokenness we see all around us. I want to speak to you about something that challenges our modern sensibilities, yet is woven into the very fabric of our biblical heritage: the practice of a husband taking another wife.

Our Biblical Heritage

Before we allow our cultural conditioning to dismiss this outright, let us look at the Word of God. We see that Abraham, our father in faith, had Sarah, Hagar, and later Keturah. Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel, had Leah, Rachel, and their handmaids Bilhah and Zilpah, through whom the twelve tribes of our faith were born. David, a man after God's own heart, had multiple wives. Even Moses had two wives.

The Law of Moses itself acknowledges this practice. Deuteronomy 21:15 speaks plainly: "If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other unloved...". Exodus 21:10 commands that if a man takes another wife, he must not diminish the food, clothing, and marital rights of the first. The Bible does not condemn these patriarchs for having multiple wives. Scripture recognizes it as a lawful practice under the Old Covenant.

A Call to Compassion

Now, I ask you to look around with the eyes of Christ. What do you see? You see women—daughters of Eve, sisters in humanity—who are forced into prostitution because they have no protector, no provider, no covering. They sell their bodies because their spirits are starving, because society has cast them aside, because there is no man to take them under his roof and give them honor.

Is it not better that a woman be called a wife than a harlot? Is it not more righteous that a man provide for a woman in the dignity of marriage than that she be passed from hand to hand in the degradation of the streets?

Reasons Why We Should Consider This Biblical Model

First, it provides for the vulnerable. When there are more women than men in the body of Christ, what is to become of the faithful sisters who have no husband? Shall they be left desolate? The Old Testament shows us that God, in His mercy, allowed this arrangement so that women would not be left without provision.

Second, it mirrors the spiritual reality. Does not Christ, our heavenly Bridegroom, have many brides? Are we not all part of the one Body of Christ, yet many members? The Church is the Bride of Christ, and we are many souls united to one Lord.

Third, it honors women who would otherwise be dishonored. In our modern world, how many women are cast aside because they cannot find a "good Christian man"? How many sit in our pews, year after year, their wombs empty and their arms aching, while their sisters are blessed with children? The story of Hannah and Peninnah, the two wives of Elkanah, shows us that God worked through this arrangement.

Fourth, it is a model of sacrificial love. When a wife agrees to share her husband, she is displaying a love that transcends jealousy—a love that says, "If I have been blessed with a good man, why should I hoard this blessing when my sister is perishing?" This is the love of Ruth, who clung to Naomi, not counting the cost to herself.

Fifth, it was never condemned by God. While the New Testament sets a higher standard for church leaders, commanding that they be the husband of one wife, nowhere does it forbid the common believer from this practice. The law regulated it but did not forbid it.

A Word to the Wives

If your husband comes to you and speaks of taking another wife to rescue her from destitution, from prostitution, from a life of shame—do not harden your heart. Remember Sarah, who gave Hagar to Abraham. Remember Rachel and Leah, who gave their maids to Jacob. These were women of faith, women who understood that the Kingdom of God is bigger than our personal comforts.

Do not let jealousy rob you of the reward that awaits you in heaven. Your reward is not in the exclusivity of your husband's bed, but in the crown of righteousness that awaits those who love the Lord and love their neighbors as themselves.

A Word to the Church

My sisters, let us open our hearts and our homes. Let us not be like the world, which commodifies women and throws them away. Let us be like our Father in heaven, who gathers the outcast and the broken and calls them His own.

If a man in your congregation has the means and the character to take another wife, let him not be condemned, but encouraged. For in doing so, he may be saving a soul from the pit of destruction.

Conclusion

I know this is difficult. I know every fiber of our modern being cries out against it. But I ask you: Is it more righteous that a woman sell her body on the streets, or that she be called a wife in a godly home? Is it more holy that she be a concubine to the world, or a covenant partner to a man of God?

The choice is before us. Let us choose life. Let us choose dignity. Let us choose to be like our mothers in the faith who understood that love is not possessive, but generous.

"He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord" (Proverbs 18:22). Let us pray that more women may find that favor, even if it comes through the open hearts of those who already have a husband.

May the Lord bless you and keep you, and may He give you the grace to love as He loves.
