Family / 11 Ways To Deal With Depression In Your 20s by Ibraheem1905: 3:36pm On Dec 21, 2016 |
Being a 20-something isn’t easy. On the one hand, the period between ages 18 and 29 is the best ever. It’s that time when you get to develop a sense of independence in college, start a new job, scout out the dating scene, or head off to new cities. On the other hand, it’s a time often characterized by financial debt, romantic misadventures, loneliness, and a sense of uncertainty about who we are and why we’re here. So it’s not surprising that people in their late teens and 20s are especially vulnerable to feelings of depression. Image result for depression The positive news is that these emotions are pretty common and typically pass by the time people hit 30. But depression can still be a serious issue that often requires some kind of treatment. Here’s how to address those feelings when they pop up. What You Need to Know At one time, most people didn’t experience their first depressive episode until their late 40s or 50s; today, depression typically first appears around age 25. And while about nine percent of the American adult population suffers from some type of depression, that number is closer to 11 percent among people ages 18 to 24. Today’s 20-somethings are going through a number of psychosocial and biological experiences that make them especially vulnerable to depression. For one thing, says Meg Jay, Ph.D., a psychologist who’s written on the importance of the 20s, depression is often triggered by loss. And the period between 18 and 29 is filled with potential losses: breaking up with a significant other, losing friends, losing a job, failing school or not getting into an academic program, and realizing our dream career plans just might not work out. The 20s, Jay says, are a time of uncertainty, which can leave people feeling powerless to change their lives. Biological factors also come into play. In the last few years, scientists have noted that the frontal lobe (the part of the brain responsible for planning and reasoning) doesn’t completely develop until the mid-20s. This means 20-somethings are faced with making some huge decisions (where to live, what career to pursue, whether to propose) when they aren’t yet at their full cognitive capacity, which can cause feelings of angst and anxiety. In some cases, 20-somethings might not realize certain lifestyle factors may contribute to depressive symptoms. Binge drinking tends to be most common and intense in people ages 18 to 24, and alcohol use disorders are closely linked to depression. According to Cameron Johnson, M.D., a psychiatrist at Loma Linda University, the transition from high school to college (and from college to post-grad life) is often marked by changes in sleep schedules, which can also cause some mental health issues. Whatever the reason for depression during this time period, there are a number of ways to cope. Many involve reaching out to people we trust and making small but meaningful lifestyle changes. 1. Your Action Plan According to Jay, there’s little evidence those who get depressed in their 20s will struggle with recurring depression, especially if they address it properly when it first appears. There’s a range of practical ways to alleviate feelings of depression. This list certainly doesn’t include every way to treat depression, but it does highlight some of the most effective strategies for people of any age. Phone a friend or family member. When it comes to dealing with depression at any time of life, mental health experts tend to agree social support is crucial. But reaching out to friends and family is harder than it might seem, since people tend to withdraw into themselves when they’re feeling depressed. That’s why parents can play a special role in our early 20s, says psychologist and Greatist expert Mark Banschick, M.D. Many of us start to see our parents as more loving and supportive than we did in our adolescence. So don’t feel like it’s baby-ish to pick up the phone and call Mom when you’re feeling blue. 2. Get a move on. Studies have found that exercise can be highly protective against depression and anxiety. Johnson says he recommends his patients do 20 minutes of high-intensity cardio every morning for a positive energy boost. 3. Hit the hay. In Johnson’s words, sleep is the “bedrock of good mental health.” An erratic sleep schedule can cause our frontal lobe functioning to go haywire, which can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety. Need help? Try one of these tips for sleeping better tonight. 4. Zen out. While more research is necessary in this area, studies have found that any kind of meditative movement, including yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong, can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. In fact, some psychologists suggest getting our Om on could be as effective as taking antidepressant medication. Mindfulness meditation (a technique focused on learning to be present and sit with uncomfortable thoughts and feelings) can be especially helpful for decreasing depression and anxiety. To some people graduating with a first class isn’t at all possible in some departments in Nigeria Universities, due to factors ranging from victimization from lecturers and the difficulties associated with the learning system. 2011/2012 graduates of Veritas University, a private institution of higher education in Nigeria. Graduating with a first class is very possible if you begin on the right track right from your very first day in school. Still thinking it’s almost impossible? Here are 10 tips on how to make a first class starting from your first year in school. 1. You have got to want it Right from the onset you need to tell yourself that you really want to graduate with a first class, this determination is the driving force required to take you closer to your goal. Students who end up graduating with a first class worked hard with a genuine desire to achieve it. 2. Learn to love reading books. Majority of students in tertiary institutions don’t spend time in studying. The few that learn to study hard day and night are the ones with higher chances of graduating with a first class. Read books that are both related and unrelated to your course of study, no knowledge they say is wasted. 3. Be friendly with your lecturers. Build a rapport with your lecturers, whether it is related to the course or you just have some pressing issue, see your lecturers as people you can confide in, the more you get to interact with them the easier for them to become aware of your true potentials. 4. Do not skip classes. It’s very common for students to skip lectures for one reason or another. If you are aiming for a first class you’ve got to try your best to attend all your lectures, whether you like the class or not, you never know what you may learn from it. 5. Avoid unnecessary distractions Luxuries like television, cable and games can very well serve as a distraction to you while on campus. If you can’t handle the distraction, then don’t get them in the first place. 6. Cut down on time spent on social media. A lot of students waste better part of the day on social media platforms and completely neglect their studies. If you want to keep up with good grades you need to cut down on the time spent on social media and focus on your studies. Politics / We Will Pay Workers Before Dec 20 —kogi Gov by Ibraheem1905: 2:36pm On Dec 14, 2016 |
Kogi State governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, on Tuesday, assured workers in the state that his administration would pay all salary and pension arrears before December 20. The governor, who stated this through his Director- General on Media and Strategy, Kingsley Fanwo, said his administration would continue to ensure welfare of workers is put on the front burners to galvanise them to be productive. “Governor Bello has directed that all salary and pension arrears be cleared before December 20. He is committed to this promise. The delay in payment of salary and pensions was due to the staff verification exercise, which is almost over.” “Governor Bello met four months unpaid salary when he assumed office. What is left at the moment is three months. Those who have recently been cleared by the verification committee, will receive all their arrears in the spirit of fairness and labour friendliness. “The governor is committed to regular payment of salary in line with the resources available to the state government and will ensure labour plays a critical role in actualising his New Direction Agenda of rejuvenating the state for excellence”. He said some workers are already receiving the salary arrears, as government has continued to pay those who have been verified and cleared to be genuine workers. “A good percentage of the workers have been paid salary arrears. Those who have not been paid, will be paid before December 20. Paying authorities have been sending cleared lists of MDAs to banks for prompt payment. “As a responsible and responsive governor, Alhaji Bello, is aware of the need to ensure Kogi workers enjoy the fruits of their labour, especially, now that Christmas and New Year celebrations are around the corner. The governor is prepared to put smiles on the faces of civil servants. “From January 2017, Kogi State will not be making salary payment an achievement. Salary payment would be regular and transparency will help government plan the development of the state with the civil servants, who will appreciate the need for development and growth.” On whether the state government has accessed another tranche of bailout, the governor’s spokesman discountenanced the “rumour” as “fabricated, unfounded and imaginative”, insisting that the administration of Alhaji Bello is transparent and “uncompromisingly committed to anti-corruption.” “We are the only state government that published our bailout account. It is evidently clear that Alhaji Bello is committed to the fight against corruption. No state government has done more internal cleansing than that of Kogi State in 2016. If Governor Bello could continually check his own administration, those dancing around the courts to avoid justice on their past should forget their dreams and prepare their papers to appear before the legitimately constituted Judicial Panel of Inquiry. . “Nobody is victimising anyone. Even the issue of staff verification exercise wouldn’t have been necessary if certain powers in the past didn’t load our payrolls with non-existent names.” source:http://www.ngpolitics.com/2016/12/we-will-pay-workers-before-dec-20-kogi.html |

Family / Why Women Need Marriage Certificate –registrar by Ibraheem1905: 2:12pm On Dec 14, 2016 |
Deputy Marriage Registrar, Jos North Local Government Council, Elizabeth Mangadi, has advised women on the need to obtain their marriage certificate, in case of divorce. Mangadi told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Jos that women need the certificate to serve as legal documentation of their marriage in the event of divorce. According to her, the certificate is a legal document that protects a woman and entitles her to a share of the husband’s property in case of divorce. She noted that women are most vulnerable in cases of divorce and therefore need some form of protection, which the certificate represents. “The certificate serves as one of the guarantees in a marriage that makes the woman a legal part of the man in the marriage and entitles her to the rights of inheritance. “Every woman should obtain and keep her certificate of marriage in a safe place. “Most women just go... http://www.ngpolitics.com/2016/12/why-women-need-marriage-certificate.html |

Politics / Patience Jonathan's Salary Too Small To Buy Hotels - Efcc by Ibraheem1905: 8:54am On Nov 16, 2016 |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it investigations showed that the salary of former first lady of Nigeria Patience Jonathan was too small to get her a hotel. The Nation reports that EFCC has retrieved monthly records of Patience’s salary and it showed that she earned just N700,000 as permanent secretary. Patience will now have to explain how she acquired nine houses, two hotels and one plaza during the tenure of her husband, ex-president Dr Goodluck Jonathan. The Nation quoted EFCC sources as saying: “Our operatives are still going ahead with the investigation of the former First Lady. “So far, our detectives have retrieved her pay slip which showed that after all deductions, she was on monthly salary of N700,000. It is left to her to justify how the salary was able to fetch her assets. “We demanded for her pay status in line with Section 7 of the EFCC Act. She was a former Permanent Secretary, who earned salary at the end of the month. She managed public trust and she has to account for it. “We will also look into her assets declaration forms when she assumed office and after she left. If these assets are pleaded, we will proceed to the next stage of our investigation.” It reported further EFCC might demand records of those who showered her with the cash gift after she allegedly claimed that the $15million in her accounts was a gift. The source said: “We are yet to get to this bend of investigation. “But we have read report where she claimed that the $15million in her account was a gift. Then the onus is on her to submit a list of the sources of the gift.” The EFCC also said it has stumbled on a petition by a civil servant declaring Patience’s appointment as permanent secretary in the first place as a violation of civil service rules and regulations. “The aggrieved civil servant alleged that promotion of the ex-First Lady from an Assistant Director to a Permanent Secretary was done without any promotion examination. “He also said the ex-First Lady did not spend up to a year as a director before she was promoted. He said the extant laws are clear that she ought to spend at least four years before moving to the next Grade Level. “But some in Bayelsa State claimed that appoi ntment of Permanent Secretary is at the discretion of a governor. They said it is basically political. “You can see that there are many dimensions to her case. In fact, in her file, the Head of Service of Bayelsa State simply wrote: ‘Promote her all the same.’ We have certainly gone far on her.” On her assets declaration form and exit form, a source in CCB said: “All her forms are in our office in Bayelsa where she was a Permanent Secretary,” the source said. Family / Woman Poisons Day-old Stepson In Niger State With "Otapiapia" (photos) by Ibraheem1905: 8:43am On Nov 16, 2016 |
Barely one week after a woman severed her stepson’s joystick; another woman has been arrested for trying to kill a two-hour old baby boy in Kopa village in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State. The 25-year-old suspect, Bilkisu Adamu Isah, said to be the second wife to the father of the little baby, was alleged to have committed the offence on Wednesday at about 7am. It was learnt that at about 5am on the fateful morning the mother of the child, Suwebatu Kohageuto, who is also the senior wife, had been delivered of the baby boy. And barely two hours after the birth of the child, the suspect, Bilkisu Adamu Isah, was allegedly left alone to look after the new born baby in order to allow Suwebatu have her bath few hours after the umbilical cord of the baby had been separated from him. An insider police source at the homicide section of the Niger State Criminals Investigation, Intelligent Department (SCIID) Minna said that no sooner that the suspect observed that the senior wife had started to bath that she went into her own room in the house, brought out a bottle of a locally made insecticide popularly called ‘Otapiapia’ and poured some into the mouth of the little child. The source, who pleaded anonymity, said as soon as the suspect had poured the substance into the mouth of the boy that he began to foam and cried out hysterically, obviously in pain. Surprisingly, the same suspect, who allegedly committed the act, was also said to have been the one that raised the alarm which attracted other members of the family, including the mother of the child. It was learnt that the family members were shocked at the strange occurrence and promptly made a distress call to the grandfather of the child, one Alhaji Mohammed Audu to come. And on arriving at the scene, the old man was said to have put his nose near the mouth of the boy and subsequently told the bewildered family members that he suspected that the boy might have been poisoned with ‘Otapiapia’ because that was the odour he perceived. It was further learnt that in the midst of the confusion that engulfed the family as efforts were being made to rush the boy to the hospital, the suspect was said to have quietly escaped from the scene and ran to her father’s house in a nearby village, Gbedahan, in the same Bosso Local Government. And on her arrival at her family house, it was gathered that she had confessed to her father that she poisoned her 2-hour old stepson with a view to killing him. However, her disappearance raised suspicion with her husband’s family because she did not tell anyone before she left. A delegation was sent to the suspect’s village where she allegedly confessed to her in-laws that she was responsible for the dastardly act, which she carried out due to her inability to give birth to a male child for her husband. The 25-year-old suspect, and a mother of two female children, was promptly handed to the Niger State Police Command headquarters and where upon investigation, she confessed to the crime. Meanwhile, the little boy is said to be responding to treatment at the General Hospital Minna. Source: http://www.ngpolitics.com/2016/11/woman-poisons-day-old-stepson-in-niger.html

Health / Adverse Effects Of Masturbation by Ibraheem1905: 12:32pm On May 28, 2016 |
Effects of Masturbation 1)Lower Back Pain : There is something called Oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone, made in the brain, in the Hypothalamus, and is transferred to the Pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain. Masturbation reduces the production of Oxytocin, Testosterone, DHT and DHEA. The deficiency of these bring about the release of the inflammatory hormone called Prostaglaidin E2, which is a source of lower back pain 2)Eye Floaters and Blurry Vision: There are some things called Nitric oxides, Acetylcholine, and cGMP. Their deficiency cause blurry vision and/or dark spots on vision. Their deficiency is caused by masturbation. 3)Long-lasting Fatigue : Hormone Cortisol increases blood sugar and metabolism. Masturbation increases its production which later leads to invariable feeling of exahustion 4)Lower Abdominal or Testicular Pain: Masturbation uses up the Pituitary-Adrenal-Testicular axis, which leads to the reduction of Oxytocin, DHEA, Testosterone and DHT production. From the moment these neurochemicals experience a reduction, the inflammatory hormone Prostaglandin E2 creates pain, near the groin and testicles, which leads to lower abdominal pain 5)Premature Ejaculation: Testosterone, Dopamine, Serotonin, HGH and neurochemicals strengthen both the endocrine system and parasympathetic nerves in the body. Masturbation results to their reduction in number. The above nerves that control an erection become weak, which leads to premature ejaculation. 6)The Shrinkage of Penis: Masturbation reduces the amount of the growth hormone present in the body. And without the growth hormones, the body cannot replenish penile tissue. necessary to increase the size of the penis More than 24 more effects are on the first aid site Read them at http://www.ourfirstaid.com/2016/05/masturbation-types-bad-effects.html |
