talk2ibk: That's the power of social media. Moreover the police CRU is very active when you have an injustice case against the police just reach out to them.
They are more on the civilian side of the issues. Exactly what I said to myself "the power of social media" You're so extremely right, the CRU unit Is so very active, In fact active Is an understatement. |

Car Talk › I Have Gotten Back The 80,000 Naira The Police Extorted From Me Illegally by Iceking1(op): 6:46pm On Jul 06, 2025 |
Hello Nairalanders, about 4 day's ago I created a thread, regarding the extortion of 80,000 naira from me illegally by the police, even when my papers are 100% correct as I did a new plate number after buying the car, so everything regarding the papers are on my name, and all Intact. For those who missed the thread, here's the link : https://www.nairaland.com/8466150/police-took-80000-me-yesterdayAfter creating the thread, It immediately got to the front page and It generated reactions, almost every one (99.9%) of those that commented were against the police because what transpired was truly an extortion. I got countless numbers of positive advices. Including going on twitter and tag some important personnel on the police force, while trying to do so by opening the profile that I went through, I saw some police numbers on one of the posts by the police, there was a post to call some numbers when one get harassed by the police unnecessarily. I copied the numbers and gave It a call, they were 5 numbers, and only the very first one I called was what sorted out my predicament. I called the number and narrated everything to the man that picked up ( Detective Barnabas from CRU) THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH SIR. So, he asked me the location where It happened and the time, he asked me to forward the screenshot of the transaction regarding I and the POS girl I made the transferred to, In which the POS girl stand was directly at the back of the station, and I did forwarded It to his whatsapp. He acted so very swiftly, he swinged Into action with immediate effect, I called him yesterday and I got my complete money back today. After telling him the area It happened and exact location, also the station they took my car to. He called the area commander with immediate effect, and the area commander swinged into action immediately. I was called to come to the station this afternoon to identify the men involved, but unfortunately they weren't around. I went home hoping to go tomorrow as told, to come and identify them. But to my utmost surprise, the police in charge of the case called me barely an hour ago that they've recovered back my money, he gave me cash, 80,000 completely. I want to use this medium to thank Nairaland and Nairalanders, you made this possible, I would not have gotten anything from that money if not for you all, coupled with the fact that I would also get more future harrassments. Below are photos of the cash I was refunded, in full. Thank you Nairaland and Nairalanders, you've done what no one else have done for me, In all my life and day to day existence, thank you so very much. I greatly appreciate. Thank you 🙏

frozen70: Be bold next time, if they insist on taking you to police station go with them after all you didn't steal the car
That will be an opportunity to tell the those that stole 80k from you and tell them the exact spot it happened and insist on seeing the DPO
Once you are allowed to see the DPO politely explain in details what you have passed through from his men and you just want to let him know that you are going to the media to say everything that happens with his boys on the road and now for them to bring you to the station
And that you will explain again to social media how you insisted on reporting the matter to the DPO
You know what, this last one will bring am end to all those nonsense because he will not want his station to be on the news for negative news and he will talk to his men
Get his contact make friend with him and anyone that stops you, tell the you will call. Mr DPO by mentioning his name and phone contact they will leave you immediately because he ma have warmed his boys earlier Thank you so very much, I did reported the matter on Twitter and I'm on the verge of getting my money back, I got a contact of on ASP on that particular station yesterday, and he asked me to come and meet me today, with the assurance that I will be getting my money back in full. |

Shikini: You don't need it.
Below are the only documents you need to move around with and show to Police, FRSC, VIO etc
1) Vehicle Licence 2) Certificate of Road Worthiness 3) Proof of Ownership Certificate 4) Insurance 5) Allocation of Plate Number 6) Tinted Permit (if glasses are tinted) 7) Drivers Licence
Select only those ones, make photocopies, staple them together and present to them. . When I did a new place number, all the above mentioned documents came with It except for tinted permit because my car isn't tinted, also drivers license because I have already got It since last year. So, the papers are all stapled together. But I still kept the receipt they used in getting the car on a car stand separately, and the change of ownership I signed with the seller the very day I got the car. As they have used these two documents to take money from me in the past before, on my immediate previous car, on two different occasions, 30k and 50k respectively. Whenever they go through my papers and confirmed It that it's correct, they normally ask for these two to extort me, so I normally move with them to avoid such a scenario, until days ago when they went through my papers and demanded for change of ownership between the very first user of the car and the immediate past owner that sold to me, and authority to sell, which I haven't heard of before. Which made me made a payment of 80,000 before they handed over my car keys back to me. I have reported the matter on twitter, and I'm trying to get In touch with the DPO of that station. |

frozen70: This is just an embarrassment and another way created to extort people
Since you have all documents and except the one they requested, even is you have that, they will create a name for another request
I think at this stage, you need the contact of the original owner of the car so that when next they stop you and ask for irrelevant documents, ask the m to speak with the first owner as he is aware that you are the one that bought the car he sold at the car slot I did told them that I wanted to call who sold the car to me, but they refused, the didn't give me a single space to make that call. And yes, you're absolutely right. What you stated Is exactly what my friend told me, he said that if I had gotten the "authority to sell" document, they would have created another one, just as you rightly said here. |

ogbiwa: I see King in your name op but truly you're not behaving like one. First of all, I'll ask, have you gotten your complete car documents? I.e have you changed the car papers successfully to your name? If you haven't, then is the existing papers (the papers you bought the car with) expired? If the existing car documents in the previous owners' name is complete and not expired, no single policeman anywhere has ANY right to stop you for any reason. And if the previous papers are expired, then straightaway go to the licencing office in your area and do your change of ownership and obtain your new vehicular papers in your name. For avoidance of doubt, these are the ONLY papers a policeman is entitled to require from you at any checkpoint:
Driver's license. Vehicle License. Proof of ownership certificate or change of ownership certificate as the case may be. Insurance. Plate number purchase receipt Certificate of roadworthiness Tinted permit (if you drive tinted glasses)
Once you have these set of papers in your car, all current (not expired) you're not entitled to give any policeman a dime. Pls this is Nigeria, everyone at the checkpoint is hungry and looking for the novice that can pay for their lunch. Don't make yourself the unfortunate novice. Wise up and man up! Good morning sir, I have all of the above papers and documents that you made mentioned above, every single one of them. When I got the car, I did a new plate number last month, so my documents are still fresh, I have all of the documents you mentioned above, Including CMR. And all of them are in my name. |

TheAdvocate: You believed you car is stolen if not, you will not part with such money. Petition the IGP and copy the station. Hello, someone gave me a number to call that it's the CRU unit of the police. I called a delta state CRU unit and he asked me to go to the station and call him when I get there. But I confided in a friend to follow me and he said the police that extorted me would deny me, argue they've never seen or met me or seen my car ever before. He said because I didn't transferred any money into their account but used a POS to withdraw the cash I used in setting them. Also, they might detain me or the person I called and talk to on the phone would not pick my call anymore when it's time as I do not know him directly, I would have been at the station already, I'm so scared to go. Please what do you suggest, please reply please. |

RandomFellow: Just go and renew your car papers, with your own information. Make sure your names are on the car paper... It will look like you're the first owner. There won't be any reason to even ask you for the non-existent paper in the first place All papers are on my name, I did a new plate number as soon as I got the car, but yet they still did what they did. Nigeria police are indeed so heartless, I'm so pained right now. |

greggng: If there is no change of ownership done on that car ...it means you are driving on another person's name . Let me make it simpler
Let's say Mr A is the first owner of that car and he sold it to Mr B ...Mr B can only be the owner of that car if he proceed to effect proper change of ownership of that car . He will be entitled to fresh plate number and all necessary document in his own name ...He will no longer be driving under the first owners name .
To solve your problem ...kindly do.priper change of ownership for that car That way police won't harass you cos every document will be in your name ..The moment all those document tallies with your name on the drivers licence ...they cannot proceed further ..The only time they can proceed further is if the chadis number of that car had been flagged as stolen car
Finally is not enough buying car ..Ensure you do due diligence. I have in the past written about due diligence to be dome to avoid wahala ...When police knows that you don't know your right ...they will be harassing you...If you have interest in doing proper change ownership ...kindly contact me only if the plate number you have on that car is lagos registration...I don't dabble Into cars bearing other state number . Immediately I got the car, I applied for a new plate number, It got ready about 6 days later, I screwed the old plate number out of the car and Inputed the newer one. Also, the new papers of the car that came with my new plate number are all on my name, including the proof of ownership, CMR and everything else, everything are all in my name. I just haven't ever heard of the "authority to sell" that they used to extort me day before yesterday, I haven't heard of it before. |

Walz001: This is the criminal activity that won't make Nigeria grow forward It always brings us back to 100 years backward
Ask your dealer or your license agent which paper to give to the police and which paper to give to other officer on the road when they ask
Don't be ignorant in this country Well I will advice don't go back because you don't have the courage but learn from. This step onward He gave me all the necessary papers to give to the police whenever they asked for my particulars, but ever since they asked for my agreement papers and motor receipt they used in buying the car from a car stand, whereby I wasn't with at that moment as it's not supposed to be part of papers to show police, I paid 40,000 that day, ever since then I always carry them along, and keep them among my particulars. But day before yesterday encounter was something else, I haven't ever been asked for "Authority to sell" before. In fact I haven't heard of it ever before. It's what made them carry my car to the station, whereby they took 80,000 from me. |

But you don’t have to panic if you are legit, they don’t have right to ask you for those documents.
Na Vehicle License, Insurance, eCMR (Now suspended), Tint Permit (Extended till August), Roadworthy certificate
Proof of Ownership na jara in case they are suspecting the car to be a stolen vehicle.
Anything outside this…. E no follow I am 100% legit, and I have all the above documents you made mentioned above. It's just so unfortunate that the police always loved taking advantage of me, almost all of the time. |

Kobojunkie: You withdrew 80k and handed it over to the hand of a police man, right? Even if the gal witnessed the transfer, you are to blame for not demanding a receipt immediately before handing the money over. If you go there and the gal refuses to serve as witness for you giving the money, what do you think would happen? I didn't hand over the cash to the policeman, I made the transfer and when it was confirmed they gave me my car key, which I presume the girl would give them the money later. Nevertheless, I understand your points now, you're indeed so right, things might get ugly really quick if I should report the issue, I'm scared at same time I really wished to report them for such scenario not to repeat itself again, because I believe when next they sees me they would still demand for the same "Authority to sell" which they used to take money from day before yesterday. |

Kobojunkie: Leave the girl alone, abeg! The people you have the issue with are the police men whom you say you have the 80 grand cash to. What business do you have with the gal who was only running her private business? I transferred to the girl, before I was done making the transfer the police called the girl in my present if I had transfered the money, as soon as I was done the POS girl called him that I have transferred it successfully, I went back to the police and he handed my car keys to me. The girl POS Is just exactly at the back of the police station, gumming the fence, so they know her very well. |

If they can't deny it then go back and ask them for an official receipt for the money you paid and see what happens.
2. Go for it! I will go to the girl tomorrow. |
