Dottore: You should be more concerned about reporting the errant officers to recover your money and to get them disciplined. I took some numbers on Twitter just now, I called one of the number that was there, he asked me to go to the station and call him when I get there, please do you think he would be able to help me recover my money? Hello sir, I called a delta state CRU unit and he asked me to go to the station and call him when I get there. But I confided in a friend to follow me and he said the police that extorted me would deny me, argue they've never seen or met me or seen my car ever before. He said because I didn't transferred any money into their account but used a POS at the fence of just outside the station to withdraw the cash I used in setting them. Also, they might detain me or the person I called and talk to on the phone would not pick my call anymore when it's time as I do not know him directly, I would have been at the station already, I'm so scared to go. Please what do you suggest, please reply please. |

Ezmans: you made a very big mistake by giving them money you could have leave the car there and come the next day with a lawyer they I'll just collect anything the lawyer I'll give them with fear I do not have a lawyer, but I will try to have one in case of next time. Nevertheless, I got some number on Twitter, Delta State precisely which is where the scenario took place. I called him and he asked me to go to the station and call him. |

Nazgul: Then get a dashcam. It's less than the 82,800 you spent. Just between 30-35k depend on the make.
If you had it - it would have automatically recorded them, then you upload the video on Twitter and tag people like VDM and other human right activist. By now the whole social media would have been trending with their ugly faces.
They would be arrested, dismissed and your money returned back to you.
Also, whenever you're stopped by the police, act very bold and bossy. Don't let them spot any kind or form of fear in you. If they do, they'll exploit it until they successfully milk you.
Sorry for your loss. I will get this cam that you speak of first thing tomorrow morning, is it on Jumia or where can I get it sir? |

Kobojunkie: So what if you withdrew money from POS? What evidence is there that you in fact paid the cash to the Police afterwards? And for what purpose? ? The POS girl is directly at the back of their office, she would show the transaction, beside they can't and will never deny it. The number they gave me to call here, I called him and he asked me to call him when I get to the station. |

ottersberger: May I ask you. What would have happened if you left that vehicle at the police station, asked for an impound receipt, then quietly walked home to go consult your solicitor?. Why are Nigerians quick to pay bribe?. You mean I should have asked them for an impound receipt? Also, I don't have any solicitor to consult. |

Richpet85: Bro you don't need all these document for you to avoid police wahara. Just go to licence office and get changed of ownership using the document given to you by the car dealer, by that I mean purchase agreement paper/Car purchase receipt once that is done. Licencing office will give you change of ownership then remove all other documents in you car and just use below document to drive your car both police or custom officers will not worry you again. These are the necessary document to have in your car while driving. 1. Drivers licence 2. Proof of ownership/change of ownership 3. Car licence 4. Insurance certificate. 5. Plate number issuance.Certificate 6. Road worthiness certificate 7. Custom document not mandatory but incase you are travelling out of town and you meet custom officers. Above is the only document needed and with this you don't have any business with police. 6 I have all of the above documents you made mentioned above, when I did a new plate number few days after acquiring the car, I was given all of the documents you mentioned. |

Kobojunkie: what about receipt , indicating where you paid cash to and to whom? I mean this is 2025? Unless you yourself are into scamming, there is no reason why you should not have obtained that at least to stop other cops from stoping and defrauding you on another day or at least on your way back. If you don't at least have proof of payment, what they did was scam you.🙄 But I have a screenshot of the transfer I did, that's enough proof, the POS I withdraw the cash from its just outside their station. |

EDUECO: You acted the right way.
Never challenge a police officer whether armed or unarmed;but you have to know where their check points are and know how to avoid them. The road to my house is one way, once they're there I can't avoid them. |
Car Talk › Re: Police Took 80,000 From Me Yesterday, Because Of Absent This Paper. by Iceking1(op): 5:31pm On Jul 04, 2025 |
yesloaded: I am sure that you registered the car plate with your name
Whoever that did the registration for you is supposed to tell you to go police extract which clearly states that you bought the car as Nigeria used
The police extract (from the police) coupled with change of ownership (you can easily get this done at any local government secretariat computer centres) will save you all these stress I have the police extract from the police, change of ownership too. In fact I did a new plate number as soon as I got the vehicle, so the CMR, proof of ownership and everything else are all in my name. |

ChybuzzDD: Never tell the police you've never heard of a document they asked to see. It'll easily give you away as a novice and, hence, an easy target
Just tell them it's not amongst the documents a car owner needs to have, whether you know about the document or not. Okay, we learn everyday, I have learnt this today, thank you so very much sir. |

SalamRushdie: There is nothing like agreement to sell letter , all you need is your proof of ownership and that's where it's ends I did have my proof of ownership, CMR, and every other thing, but still they took my car to the station because of a paper called "authority to sell" which I haven't heard of ever before. |

TenQ: The best way to deal with the police with this is (if it is within your city) ask them to charge you to court. They have to do that within 24 Hours of your arrest AND they must state exactly what they have arrested you for.
Trust me, this is the LAST thing our Police want.
A question then would be asked is if they suspect that then car was stolen! Thank you sir, I have learnt a new one today, I have screenshot and copied this advice, in case I forgot, thank you so very much. |

IJAYA001: When you buy used vehicle, you just need to take the agreement between seller and buyer to do proof of ownership. Shikena
What a nonsense with our police.
SHIOR I did new plate number after buying, I have my proof of ownership cmr everything on my name. |

Academicwizman: The most sensible advice that I have seen here. I worked with Motor Licensing office in the past. Please take this advice. Change the number plate and register the new one in your name. Case closed! You will need some papers to do this including the original proof of ownership. You must, however, clear any pending bill on the current vehicle license. Ire o! Immediately I bought the car, I did another plate number and all the papers are in my name, every single detail, including the proof of ownership and cmr. They asked for 'authority to sell' which I don't have and they took my car to the station. |

SAMAJ: The only thing that police can request on a motor vehicle and from the driver are as follows:
1. Vehicle License 2. Driver License 3. Vehicle Insurance Certificate. and probably; 4. Certificate of roadworthiness.
They can only ask for proof of ownership only if the vehicle is suspected to be stolen and it's not to be asked on the road.
They saw you as a novice and just took advantage of you Next time, ask to see the DPO or the DCO and explain your situation to either of them. Thank you, I have learnt a lot here already. Someone even suggested that I report the issue on Twitter, I'm really not certain if it would yield anything positive but I would give it a trial. Thank you once again. |

Always avoid every police check point because their aim is to obtain you. The last time I recorded, I think it was earlier this year, they forcefully seized my phone and ordered me to delete the video which I did. |
