The birthplace of Islam (Saudi Arabia), has announced that the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday 27 May. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by


Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (Sawm) to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Mohammed according to Islamic belief. This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam.


According to numerous biographical accounts compiled in the hadiths, Ramadan lasts 29 to 30 days based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon. The beginning and end of Islamic months are determined by the sighting of the new moon.

Lebanon’s top Islamic authority, the mufti, said Ramadan would also begin in the country on Saturday.
A similar statement was made by officials in Iraq’s Muslim Sunni minority.


The President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs Sultan Saad Abubakar, has asked Muslims in Nigeria to look out for the new moon from Friday, May 26.

During Ramadan, Muslims have to abstain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn to sunset.

Devout Muslims also mark the month by intense worship, performing special nightly prayers and reading Islam’s holy book, the Koran.

Fasting is one of Islam’s five pillars, alongside declaration of monotheism, praying five times a day, alms-giving, and the pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

2 Nigeria Brigade Army has arrested 17 cultists and recovered assorted arms and ammunition in Oku, Iboku, Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

A statement issued by Capt. Shuaib Umar, spokesman of the brigade.
He made it known to newsmen on Sunday in Uyo, said that the arrest followed a successful raid on hideouts of armed cultists at Oku and Itu bridges, the boundary between Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
“During the raid, we arrested 17 cultists with assorted arms and ammunition including two G3 rifles, two pump action rifles, five locally made pump action rifles, and four G3 magazines.
“We also recovered 16 machetes, 125 rounds of 7.62 mm NATO, 223 live cartridges, among others.

“Also recovered were a pair of military camouflage uniform, a camouflage T shirt, camouflage singlet, a cardigan, 10 mobile phones, a bag of charms, a bag of clothes and one wrap of Indian hemp,N29,700 cash and motorcycles” the statement said.
Major Gen. Abdu Ibrahim Hassan, the brigade commander has assured members of the public of adequate protection against criminals.
He said, “We shall do everything possible to rid the area of such irritants, but our success will depend on the support we get from members of the people; everyone must be ready to report any form of crime to us. ”

Two soldiers have lost their lives after a female suicide bomber attacked a military camp located behind the Internally Displaced People’s Camp in Mashimari town of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, yesterday May 17th.

The attack took place at about 7.30pm last night. The suicide bomber detonated the bomb that was strapped around her body.

The remains of the soldiers have been deposited at the Borno state mortuary.
