Politics / 22 PDP Gov Aspirants Defect To APC by Idrico(m): 4:30pm On Jan 09, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Akwa Ibom State, southern Nigeria, has suffered a major blow ahead of the general elections as the party’s 22 aggrieved governorship aspirants otherwise known as G22, have finally defected to the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.
The Punch reports that they will meet the APC’s presidential candidate, Major-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, 12 January, 2015.
It was learnt that the 22 governorship aspirants of the PDP in the controversial 8 December, 2014 primary in the state decided to defect from PDP to the APC on Wednesday.
One of the aspirants, who spoke on condition of anonymity with The Punch on Thursday, said their decision was based on the way they were treated by the PDP in the state.
The aspirant also said President Goodluck Jonathan could not find a solution to the crisis.
He said the crisis came to a head on 6 January, 2015 when Jonathan, after scheduling to meet with them, later declined.
The aspirant said: “The President’s last minute decision was said to have been masterminded by a fifth columnist.
“It could be recalled that the (members of) G22 have been in Abuja since 9 December, 2014. Both the party leadership and the President are playing games with them without finding a political solution to the issues and without using the party’s mechanism to redress their complaints.
“This inhuman treatment is only meted out to G22. How could the President, who had met with individuals like Senator (Musiliu) Obanikoro and Senator Ifeanyi Araraume not meet 22 aspirants of the party? Is the President saying that they do not count? Then let us see how the party will win in Akwa Ibom State.”
The 22 aggrieved PDP aspirants had on December 8, 2014 protested against the governorship primary, saying the exercise lacked transparency.
The aspirants had accused the party of using a fake delegates’ list.
They also alleged that the party leadership did not disclose the venue of the primary to other aspirants before the time of the election.

Politics / 2015: Nigerians Will Determine Our Action In The Oil Sector – APC by Idrico(m): 4:19pm On Jan 09, 2015
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that Nigerians will be allowed to determine the decision its government will make in the oil and gas sector.
APC spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that if the party is elected into the presidency, it would ensure the full participation of Nigerians in discussions concerning the oil and gas sector.
This, he said, the party would do, using the National Assembly platform. According to him, the corruption in the oil sector is retarding its progress, adding that, the party will unbundle the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
He noted that if given the mandate, APC would establish an Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority to supervise its activities.
According to him, the planned unbundling of the corporation will help to checkmate corruption, ensure transparency and the accountability in the oil sector and particularly in the NNPC.
“Within the first 12 months of our stay in office, we will ensure the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) law and unbundle the NNPC and the petroleum industry.
“When we get to government, we will get the original copy of the PIB and present it to the National Assemble for passage.
“If within four years in office, if we do not implement this, give us a red card,” he said.
Mohammed added that the party would establish modern oil refineries to increase the flow of oil and gas product to domestic consumers.
He also promised that his party would use market mechanism to shift gas supply toward domestic production and introduce strong local content institutions.
On public administration, the APC spokesman said the party would evolve a code of conduct that would reward hard working personnel and punish unserious ones.
He further said that to address issues of corruption among political office holders, the APC would end immunity clause concerning all serving political officers and let those with corrupt tendency face prosecution.
The APC image maker added that the party would tackle all forms of discrimination against women and establish Women and Gender Ministry to handle women affairs

Buhari's education as a military officer is more than equivalent of School certificate level.

Whether he pass or fail O' level is irrelevant in the contest.

Politics / FG Using Security Agencies To Decapitate Opposition Ahead Of 2015 Polls – APC by Idrico(m): 1:53pm On Dec 31, 2014
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm over the plan by the Federal Government to use the security agencies, especially the DSS and the Police, to harass and intimidate the opposition with a view to decapitating it ahead of the 2015 elections.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the torrent of threats being issued recently by the Minister of Police Affairs and the DSS, over alleged inflammatory statements by opposition leaders, is nothing but a thinly-veiled attempt at cowing the opposition and destabilizing its ranks.

It said the strategy includes the ‘invitation’ of key opposition figures for questioning by the DSS, starting with the APC National Publicity Secretary, to be followed by arrests and detention of such figures.

APC said the impending clampdown is the PDP-led Federal Government’s answer to the soaring profile of the opposition ahead of the polls, and called on local and international observers of the elections to keep a close eye on the unsavoury developments, which constitute a clear and present danger to the success of the elections.
”The Minister of Police Affairs said publicly that he has already directed the Inspector-General of Police as well as the DSS to arrest anyone who makes inflammatory statements ahead of the 2015 elections, and then went ahead to castigate the APC, thus exposing the real reason for his directive.

”The Minister had barely issued his orders when the DSS, which has unabashedly become a megaphone of the ruling PDP, fired its own warning, directed pointedly at ”a serving governor calling on men of the armed forces to rise up in protest against constituted authority,” when nothing of such happened.

”If the Minister and indeed the security agencies were carrying out their duties as an official/agents of state rather than partisans, they would have realized that no one is more guilty of making inflammatory and even treasonable statements than the supporters of the President and members of the PDP.

”Yet, not once has the Minister, and the security agencies under his control, called these people to order. There is no better indication of the mindset of these threats-issuing Minister and the security agencies under his control than their glaring double-standard and vexatious partisanship. This is not how to run the affairs of state,” the party said.

It recalled that a series of inflammatory, insulting and downright treasonable comments by supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan and officials of the PDP all went without as much as a whimper from those who are now howling at the opposition for statements that are neither inflammatory nor treasonable.
”A a die-hard supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan once threatened that there will be blood on the streets if the President is not re-elected, without anyone calling him to order. He recently said the President has already won the yet-to-be conducted Feb. 14 presidential election, suggesting that the election will be a mere formality. No one called him to order.
”Another supporter of the President, Chief Edwin Clark, said if the opposition had its way, it would poison President Jonathan just to take power. The Minister of Police Affairs and the security agencies under his control snored the comment away.
”PDP National Secretary Wale Oladipo called the presidential candidate of the APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, a ‘semi-literate jackboot’, PDP National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh heaped abuses on APC leaders in an ill-tempered statement arising from a disoriented PDP in the aftermath of the hugely-successful APC national convention while a spokesman for the President called Gen. Buhari names for being a ‘poor’ man, yet this Minister and his agencies did not see anything inflammatory in all these statements, all because they came from members and supporters of the ruling party.
”We know that Nigerians as well as the international community are watching closely and documenting these developments. It is important to do so if they are to make informed comments on the outcome of the forthcoming polls.
”On our part, we will continue to document the developments while maintaining a responsible and purposeful public discourse, highlighted by issues and devoid of the kind of inflammatory and treasonable comments that PDP and Presidency officials have been spewing out,” APC said.

Politics / Why PDP Described Buhari As A Semi-illiterate Jackboot – Metuh by Idrico(m): 1:05pm On Dec 24, 2014
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has come out to defend the party’s national secretary, Prof. Wole Oladipo who referred to General Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress, presidential candidate as “semi-literate jackboot.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, he said that PDP’s reference to Buhari, as “semi-literate jackboot” was not an instance of malicious attack on character because his party occupies ‘high moral ground’.
Metuh then adviced the APC to stop personal attacks on members of the PDP and focus on issue-based campaigns.
Metuh who acknowledged Oladipo’s attack on Buhari said: “In the PDP, we occupy the moral high ground as far as our commitment to issues-based campaign is concerned.
“Our word remains our bond. Since we made that commitment, we have focused on issues.
“There has never been any instance that we have maliciously attacked the characters of those on the presidential ticket of the APC.
“Rather, we have been alive to our responsibility of offering public service, so that Nigerians will not be deceived.’’
He added that the statement by Oladipo, referred to by the APC, did not compare to instances of vicious, malicious and provocative attacks on the person and office of President Goodluck Jonathan by the APC.
He said that in the face of vicious attacks on the President, PDP had remained committed to engaging in decent campaign ahead of the 2015 general elections.
“It is on record that a few days after the commitment alluded to by the APC, Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State and of the APC attacked the person of President Jonathan, describing him as an incompetent commander-in-chief.
“No personal attack could be more vicious and unconscionable. Similarly, the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, had consistently prosecuted a hate campaign against President Jonathan, describing him as an enemy of Rivers people.
“To worsen the entire matter, the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, is complicit in the propagation of personal attack over and above issues.
“It was insulting for Buhari to say, as he did in Sokoto on December 21, that no right-thinking Nigerian will vote for Jonathan.’’
Metuh said President Jonathan had never, whether before or after he became the PDP presidential candidate for 2015 election, attacked the character or person of General Buhari.
He assured that PDP was however, fully prepared, ready, willing and able to defend all personal attacks on President Jonathan and the party’s leadership.
