The Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr. Aliyu Aziz has disclosed that more than 100 million Nigerians have no form of identification.


The NIMC boss disclosed this during a Zoom meeting with editors .

Aziz, who spoke on the topic: “Strategic Roadmap for ID Development”, said less than 50 percent of the country’s population is not enrolled in the commission’s database.

“Over 100 million Nigerians have no identity (ID). These include the poorest and the most vulnerable groups, such as the marginalised – women and girls, the less-educated people, migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, people with disabilities and people living in rural and remote areas,” The Cable quoted him as saying.


“The estimated population of Nigeria stands at 200 million. Only about 38 per cent of the population have any form of ID.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned politicians planning to undermine or disrupt the September 19 and October 10 governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states respectively.

INEC boss, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu while speaking on Wednesday at a virtual meeting on “Democracy and Elections in West Africa” organised by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Washington DC, threatened that the commission would not declare the results of the polls if politicians disrupted the processes.

According to him, INEC was commitment to free, fair and credible elections, warning that when it is established that an election was disrupted, the commission would not make a declaration on the outcome of such an election.

He said, “Where the election is disrupted and the commission cannot vouch for the integrity of the process, we will not go ahead to make any declaration.”

Texas on Wednesday reported 2,504 new coronavirus cases, the highest one-day total since the pandemic emerged.A month into its reopening, Florida this week reported 8,553 new cases -- the most of any seven-day period.California’s hospitalizations are at their highest since May 13 and have risen in nine of the past 10 days.

A fresh onslaught of the novel coronavirus is bringing challenges for residents and the economy in pockets across the U.S. The localized surges have raised concerns among experts even as the nation’s overall case count early this week rose just under 1%, the smallest increase since March.


“There is a new wave coming in parts of the country,” said Eric Toner, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “It’s small and it’s distant so far, but it’s coming.”

Though the outbreaks come weeks into state reopenings, it’s not clear that they’re linked to increased economic activity. And health experts say it’s still too soon to tell whether the massive protests against police brutality that have erupted in the past two weeks have led to more infections.

The wife of the president, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, today, lost a protocol officer attached to the office of the first lady, Sani Yekini.

Mrs Buhari, via her social media handle today, announced Yekini’s death describing him as “very committed, dedicated and courageous”.

The late protocol staff had worked in her office for four years and died after a prolonged fight with diabetes.



According to the first lady's statement, it read: While commiserating with the family of the deceased, she wrote, “On behalf of my family and the entire staff of my office, I wish to condole the family of Mr Sani Yekini, a protocol officer in my office, who died earlier today. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus.
