At least 12 people have died after a TransAsia Airways plane clipped a bridge and crashed into a river near the Taiwanese capital, Taipei. Fifty-eight people were onboard the domestic flight. The plane is now half-submerged in the Keelung River. Rescuers have cut open the side of the fuselage and are trying to rescue several people still trapped inside. Taipei officials said 16 people suffered injuries. Thirty people are still unaccounted for. Cindy Sui reports: ''Many of the people on board are still inside the aircraft'' The ATR-72 turbo-prop plane had just taken off from Taipei Songshan Airport and was heading to the outlying Kinmen islands, just off the coast of the south-eastern Chinese city of Xiamen, CNA said. Flight controllers lost contact with the plane at 10:55 local time (02:55 GMT). Footage of the plane apparently filmed from inside passing cars showed it banking sharply, hitting a taxi and clipping the bridge before crashing into the river. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-31125052?OCID=twitterasia

Three French soldiers stabbed during patrol outside Jewish community centre 'by suspected jihadist who was intercepted trying to reach ISIS the week before The man who stabbed three soldiers outside a Jewish community centre in Nice today, was apprehended in Turkey last week while en-route to join ISIS, authorities believe. Moussa Coulibaly, 30, was arrested at Istanbul airport and deported back to France after border control became suspicious, a security source has said. His shares the last name of Amedy Coulibaly, who took hostages in a kosher supermarket in Paris and gunned down a policewoman last month. The surname is relatively common among families of Malian descent, but anti-terrorist police have confirmed they are 'investigating a link' between the pair. Coulibaly was detained after the attack, near the Galeries Lafayette department store, and a second man has since been arrested by police. The attack took place in central Nice around 2pm this afternoon, after Coulibaly had been fined for travelling on the tram without a ticket. He 'paid the fine without flinching and then rushed at the soldiers,' The Local reports. Coulibaly then pulled an eight-inch blade out of a bag and set upon one of the soldiers, injuring him in the chin, police said. Coulibaly then swiped at two other soldiers - injuring one in the cheek, and the other in the forearm - before being apprehended by riot police stationed near the building. He has a record of theft and violence, but the motive for the attack is not yet clear, an anonymous police official said. The attack took place outside a Jewish community centre in Nice, home to an Israeli association and a Jewish radio station. A manager at the center, who did not want to be identified because she was afraid, confirmed soldiers posted in front of the building were attacked. She said it happened around lunchtime and no one was inside the office. France has been on high alert since the attacks in the Paris region by three Islamic extremists that left 20 people dead, including the gunmen. More than 10,000 soldiers have been deployed around the country to protect sensitive locations, including major shopping areas, synagogues, mosques and transit hubs. Earlier Tuesday, French authorities arrested seven men and a woman suspected of involvement in a network sending fighters to join ISIS in Syria. Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said those arrested in the Paris and Lyon areas are not suspected of links to the attacks against a kosher grocery and newspaper Charlie Hebdo in January. Three of those arrested Tuesday had traveled to Syria and returned in December 2014, a French official said, though it was unclear whether they joined the Islamic State group or another group. The network began sending French fighters to Syria in May 2013, and at least one of them was killed there, the official said. Other members of the network are still in Syria. The group did not appear to be involved in any particular plot, or linked to any other networks already broken up in France in recent months, said the official, who was not authorized to be publicly identified discussing security matters. France has seen hundreds of homegrown radicals join extremists abroad, most linked to ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Cazeneuve said recent atrocities by the Islamic State group - including the killing of a Japanese hostage - 'only strengthen the government's determination to fight terrorism every day and every hour.' French authorities have come under criticism for being overzealous in cracking down on potential threats since the attacks, arresting dozens for comments seen as defending terrorism and notably questioning an eight-year-old boy. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2938009/Three-soldiers-anti-terror-patrol-France-stabbed-knifeman.html

the city of Gombe on Monday. A bomb exploded in a car park 200 yards outside a stadium just three minutes after Nigeria’s president left, witnesses said, wounding 18. Initial reports suggested the blast came from a car bomb, but rescue workers and health officials later said two female suicide bombers were suspected of being behind the attack. “We have evacuated two bodies of females we believe were suicide bombers behind the blast,” said a rescue worker, a comment backed by a medical source at Gombe State Specialist Hospital. Mohammed Bolari, who was at the rally said the explosion happened at 3.10pm (2.10pm GMT), just three minutes after Mr Jonathan’s departure. A local reporter who asked not to be named said: “The president had just passed the parking lot and we were trailing behind his convoy when the explosion happened… just 100 metres from the bus we were driving in.” Mr Jonathan had been speaking to supporters of his ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as part of his bid for re-election at polls in two weeks’ time. His appearance in the city came just a day after two blasts in the city, including one that targeted a military checkpoint. At least five people were killed. Bolari said of the latest blast: “It is difficult to say how many people were affected because of the confused struggle by the huge crowd leaving the venue to escape for fear of another blast.” The local reporter said that the explosion led to unrest in the city, with crowds of angry youths attacking anyone seen with any PDP signs. “They were shouting and denouncing the president’s visit which they blamed for the attack,” he added. “We had a difficult time passing through these crowds. At one point a crowd threw stones at our vehicle. Some reporters sustained cuts from smashed window screens. http://africanspotlight.com/2015/02/02/photo-president-jonathan-narrowly-escapes-bomb-blast-in-gombe/

Nigerian troops have finally bombed Boko Haram’s notorious hideout in Sambisa Forest, the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reports. The attack was launched as a part of actions to suppress the Boko Haram terrorists. Maj-Gen Chris Olukolade, the director of defense information, told the journalists that the army had been attacking the forest and other hideouts of the terror group since Monday night. The military used its war drones to reach some of the Boko Haram camps in the northeast but there was no information about casualties on either side. The army said that they are still dedicated to protecting the civilian population at whatever cost. http://www.naij.com/378044-nigerian-army-bombard-sambisa-forest.html |
ABUJA—A blast, yesterday, ripped through a car park outside Gombe Stadium where President Goodluck Jonathan had addressed a campaign rally barely three minutes after he left. A suspected female bomber and another woman died in the blast while six other persons sustained various degrees of injury, according to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Fwaje Atajiri. Atajiri, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the blast occurred near a carpenter’s shop in Kashere Street at the Water Board area in Gombe city and not at the campaign rally. Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, who confirmed the blast also disclosed that the African Union Peace and Security Council had approved the mobilization and immediate deployment of 7,500 troops to Nigeria to fight Boko Haram. The blast occurred in Gombe on a day explosion rocked three court premises in Rivers State with one of the affected courts burnt down by fire. An eyewitness to the blast in Gombe, Mohammed Bolari, who was at the rally, said the explosion happened at 3:10 pm, three minutes after President Jonathan’s departure. According to him, “the President had just passed the parking lot and we were trailing behind his convoy when the explosion happened, just 100 metres from the bus we were driving in.” Jonathan’s appearance in the city came just a day after two blasts in the city, including one that targeted a military checkpoint. At least five people were killed. There was no claim of responsibility for Sunday’s attacks but the city has been hit by suspected Boko Haram militants in the past. Bolari said of the latest blast: “It is difficult to say how many people were affected because of the confused struggle by the huge crowd leaving the venue to escape for fear of another blast.” He added that “the explosion led to unrest in the city, with crowds of angry youths attacking anyone seen with any PDP sign. They were shouting and denouncing the President’s visit which they blamed for the attack. We had a difficult time passing through these crowds. At one point a crowd threw stones at our vehicle. Some reporters sustained cuts from smashed window screens.” Also confirming the blast while updating newsmen on the security situation in the country in Abuja, Omeri said: “We got confirmation that there was actually a blast at the Water Board Junction in Gombe town. The incident took place soon after the President and his entourage left the stadium in Gombe. However, casualty figure is yet to be ascertained,” he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/jonathans-campaign-ground-bombed/ |

(CNN)A newly distributed ISIS release appears to show the decapitated body of captive Japanese journalist Kenji Goto, after an English-language lecture is given by masked ISIS member "Jihadi John" to the people of Japan. The video, 67 seconds long, was released Saturday as others before it, by ISIS media wing Al Furqan Media, and cannot be authenticated by CNN. "We are deeply saddened by this despicable and horrendous act of terrorism and we denounce it in the strongest terms," Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in Tokyo, according to broadcaster NHK. "To the terrorists, we will never, never forgive them for this act." Kenji Goto in Aleppo, Syria, on October 24, 2014. Kenji Goto in Aleppo, Syria, on October 24, 2014. He said that Japan will continue to provide humanitarian aid to countries affected by the bloody fight against ISIS. Goto's mother, Junko Ishido, said he wanted to help create a world without wars. "I'm shedding tears of sorrow, I just can't think of any words to say. But I don't want this sorrow to create a chain of hatred," she said, NHK reported. The video opens with a black slate that reads, "A Message to Japan." The video then shows a kneeling Goto wearing an orange outfit. The man known as "Jihadi John" is standing behind him. The terrorist speaks while holding a knife in his left hand. "Abe, because of your reckless decision to take part in an unwinnable war, this knife will not only slaughter Kenji, but will also carry on and cause carnage wherever your people are found. So let the nightmare for Japan begin," the man says. The video cuts to black as the militant puts the knife to Goto's throat. It then shows the apparent result of the decapitation. It's not clear who conducted the apparent killing. The knife-wielding masked man with a London accent, nicknamed "Jihadi John," has issued threats and overseen the beheadings of other captives. He has appeared in at least six videos with hostages. New questions raised about 'Jihadi John' The fate of a Jordanian pilot captured by ISIS in Syria, Muath al-Kaseasbeh, was unclear. He is not mentioned in the video. ISIS had been demanding that Jordan exchange a convicted terrorist, Sajida al-Rishawi, for the pilot. If there was no swap, ISIS said it would kill al-Kaseasbeh first, then Goto. Goto would be the second Japanese hostage to be killed by ISIS recently. A video file posted online a week ago by a known ISIS supporter shows an image of Goto holding a photo of what appeared to be the corpse of his fellow captive, Haruna Yukawa. U.S. President Barack Obama called the act a "heinous murder." "We stand today in solidarity with Prime Minister Abe and the Japanese people in denouncing this barbaric act," the President said in a written statement. "We applaud Japan's steadfast commitment to advancing peace and prosperity in the Middle East and globally, including its generous assistance for innocent people affected by the conflicts in the region." The 47-year-old Goto left Japan last fall, when his youngest daughter was 3 weeks old. His wife, Rinko, first heard from his captors December 2. Jordanian officials have said they are willing to swap al-Rishawi -- a female jihadist imprisoned in Jordan for her role in a 2005 suicide bombing at a wedding reception that killed dozens -- for the pilot. But Jordan's key condition is proof that al-Kaseasbeh is still alive. Al-Kaseasbeh was captured after he ejected from his F-16 jet last month near Raqqa, the extremist group's de facto capital in Syria. Fahed al-Kaseasbeh, an uncle of the pilot, told CNN: "I am sad and devastated to hear this news, regardless of the nationality of the person. I am sad about this act of the beheading of any human. Also, I am very worried about the well-being of the son of my brother, my nephew. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfzArkVcE50 http://edition.cnn.com/2015/01/29/world/isis-hostage-kenji-goto/index.html

The Nigerian military on Sunday confirmed PREMIUM TIMES’ earlier report that it foiled a major Boko Haram attack on Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, killing several terrorists. The spokesperson of the Defense Headquarters, Chris Olukolade, said the insurgents flee in disarray towards different directions – Bama, Ngom, Alou, Delwa and Mafa – but have been effectively contained while a mop up operation is ongoing. “The terrorists incurred massive casualty,” Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, said. The situation is calm as mopping up operation in the affected area is ongoing.” He said several weapons and ammunition including two armoured vehicles, two artillery guns and 17 Hilux vehicles were captured from the insurgents in the attack. Affected areas have also been recovered by the military as patrol and pursuit of fleeing insurgents continued in coordination with allied forces of the Multinational Joint Task Force, MNJTF. “The terrorists are meant to be engaged in all fronts including their previous safe havens and hideouts in the region,” he said, adding that wounded soldiers are being treated. PREMIUM TIMES reported the attack which lasted several hours on Sunday morning with residents remaining indoors. The insurgents were confronted by soldiers and members of the local vigilante, called Civilian-JTF. A security source and vigilante members had said hundreds of the insurgents were killed in the attack. Sunday’s attack is the second by the insurgents in one week as they continue their plot to take the Borno capital. The military had last Sunday foiled a similar attack by the group, who also attacked Konduga and Monguno. The Boko Haram still control some territories in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa, while some have been recaptured by Nigerian soldiers working with soldiers of neighbouring countries who are members of the MNJTF. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/176101-maiduguri-attack-boko-haram-suffers-massive-casualty.html |

The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, has expressed support for the establishment of a Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to fight Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s North-east region. Ban made the affirmation while addressing newsmen on Saturday on the sidelines of ongoing African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the AU Peace and Security Council at its 484th meeting, held on Jan. 29 at the level of Heads of State and Government, adopted a resolution to establish an initial 7,500 troops to combat the Boko Haram insurgents. The resolution was sequel to a proposal presented to the council by countries in the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the Republic of Benin. The LCBC countries - Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad - made the proposal for the continent to raise troops that could defeat the terrorist group currently expanding to borders of Cameroon and Chad. It is believed that no fewer than 13,000 persons had been killed, while more than one million others displaced, since the group began attacks on villages in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in 2009. Ki-moon said: “I strongly support the AU’s decision to establish a Multi-national Joint Taskforce, which is consistent with the UN Human Rights Policies. Regional and international efforts must focus on protecting communities in Northern Nigeria and across borders. “The more than one million internally displaced people and refugees must be able to return home. We must stop the advance of this terrorist group. Once again, I repeat my call for immediate and unconditional release of those who have been abducted, particularly the girls from Chibok”, the UN scribe said. He noted that collaboration on peace and security had been one of the most important elements of the UN partnership with the AU. He disclosed that more than 80 per cent of U.N. peacekeeping operations were deployed in Africa. “The UN Assembly in 2006 adopted a global counter terrorism strategy. Under this, we have established implementation taskforce and I, myself, established counter terrorism centres,” he said. According to him, addressing terrorism and extremism will uphold and respect human rights and protect the dignity of human lives. The UN scribe said Boko Haram, ISIL and all other terrorist groups had committed unspeakable brutality against humanity, adding that regional countries alone could not handle the situation. Therefore, I am asking that those terrorists should be addressed by regional and international coordination and cooperation. At the same time, the military means may not be the only solution. There should be a very careful analysis of the root causes why this kind of terrorist and violent extremism is spreading; it is another very important aspect. I am urging the whole international community which has capacity and influence to join hands as the UN is ready to fully cooperate with the AU,” he said. Ban Ki-moon expressed support for Nigeria and other African nations holding elections this year. “The AU has strong record of supporting democratic transitions. The AU and UN will work together to support member states to organise peaceful and credible polls,” he said. He urged African leaders and others around the world to respect constitutional and legal power limits by listening to their people and respect their aspirations being expressed through democratic processes. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/ki-moon-supports-regional-troops-against-boko-haram/200653/

The police and other security operatives on Saturday chased out pro-Buhari supporters at the Kaduna rally for the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan. The main bowl of the 30,000-capacity Ahmadu Bello Stadium, the venue of the rally, was half-filled. It was the last in the series of North-West rallies scheduled for President Jonathan’s re-election bid. When the state Governor, Mukhtar Yero, mounted the podium to read his welcome address, as soon as he shouted ‘PDP,’ a large section of the crowd chorused ‘Sai (only) Buhari.’ Also, when the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, shouted ‘Sai Nigeria,’ the crowd responded, ‘Sai Buhari.’ All the personalities that spoke at the rally were greeted with the ‘Sai Buhari’ slogan. In reaction to the development, security operatives, including combat-ready policemen descended on the crowd in an attempt to chase them out. As the police kept chasing the pro-Buhari supporters out of the stadium, they kept chanting, ‘Sai Buhari’ intermittently. They also tore several posters of President Jonathan and his deputy in the stadium. Not done, the youth outside the stadium reportedly threw pebbles on the convoy of the president after the president had left the stadium at about 3:00pm. A visibly angry Deputy Governor of the state, Nuhu Bajoga, was spotted by our correspondent at the rally, reprimanding members of the local organising committee at the main bowl of the stadium and asking the committee to “go and bring more people.” It was gathered that the money for the supporters were allegedly diverted by some officials of the local organising committee. Reacting to the development, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Lai Mohammed said, “It shows the popularity of Gen. Buhari. It shows that he is unstoppable. “Chasing his supporters out of the stadium does not help the President or the PDP. It worsens their case.” The Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jibril, however dismissed insinuations of the non-acceptability of President Jonathan in northern states. Jibril said it was the “quality of the crowd that matters and not hiring of miscreants.” In his speech, President Jonathan said Kaduna was one of the major beneficiaries of Federal Government policies. He urged the people of the state to re-elect him in the Febuary 14 election. He said the state was the focus of the central government in the next four years if elected. He also promised to revamp the collasped textile mills in the state to create jobs for the teeming youths in the state. Vice President Sambo had earlier in his speech said the people of the state were highly elated with the President for his choice as running mate in the February polls. He described Jonathan as patriotic and detribalised and therefore urged the people of the state to vote the party in all the elections. The Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Yero in his welcome address said the state was the stronghold of the party since 1999 and would remain as such. He thanked the President for transforming the state, especially, the establishment of fast rail service from Abuja to the state to ease transportation problems and the establishment of 30KWT power plant in the state. http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-kaduna-rally-police-chase-pro-buhari-crowd-out-of-stadium/ |
