AKURE — DETECTIVES in OndoState have detained a primary school teacher, Alade Adebayo, for allegedly flogging to death a four-year-old female pupil Elizabeth Wanogha. The deceased pupil was a student of a private primary school, Falaye Memorial Nursery and Primary School, located at Fanibi area in Akure metropolis. The teacher, according to report, accused the deceased of being stubborn in the class. He was said to have beaten the girl to a state of coma. Cries from other pupils in the class reportedly attracted other teachers who rushed to the scene where they found that the girl had fainted. She was said to have been rushed to a private hospital and was admitted but reportedly died later. Police authorities, however, said that the pupil died two weeks after the beating by the suspect. The father of the deceased, Mr Wanogha lodged a complaint at the Fanibi Police station, alleging that his daughter died as a result of the injuries sustained from the severe beating by her teacher. Following the complaint, the teacher was arrested for interrogation. Contacted, the Police image maker, Wole Ogodo, confirmed that the teacher had been arrested. Ogodo however said that people should not jump into conclusion that it was the beating which took place about two weeks earlier that led to the death of the pupil. He pointed out that the autopsy will determine the cause of the pupil’s death. Ogodo said that the suspect is being quizzed at the state Criminal Investigative Department, SCID. He explained further that the deceased was hospitalised immediately after the beating but died two weeks after. Ogodo said that investigation into the death of the pupil continues adding that the findings would be made public. The father of the deceased pupil insisted that the teacher should be prosecuted for murder. Mr wanogho who lived at Adebowale street Fanibi vowed that the matter would be pursued to a logical conclusion to serve as deterrent to wicked teachers who vent their anger on innocent pupils put in their care. He appealed to NGOs to take the matter up by ensuring that it was not swept under the carpet. The proprietor of the school declined comment on the incident. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/teacher-beats-4-yr-old-pupil-death-stubborn/ |

Mr Yinka Odumakin is the National Publicity Secretary of the Yoruba socio- political organization, Afenifere. In this interview, he takes a swipe at the All Progressive Congress, APC, for kicking against the National Conference proposed by President Goodluck Jonathan. Excerpts: In recent times, you have taken a decision that is favorably disposed to the National Conference proposed by President Goodluck Jonathan. What is the basis of your optimism? Dr Tunji Braithwaite said at the town hall meeting recently, that the conference is a divine agenda to perhaps give Nigeria a lease of life because Nigeria, as it is, is heading for the precipe. Next year will be our centenary celebration and there is a widespread mood among those who are frustrated with the way Nigeria has distorted the aspiration of its people. And that may be the year to put an end to Nigeria. Here is President Goodluck Jonathan who, two years ago, said there was no need for a National Conference. All of a sudden, he changed his mind. I think it is something that all those who want this country to continue, who love this country and who believe that there is an alternative for this country before it disintegrates, should grab with both hands to ensure that we sit down for the first time in our history since 1914 that we were amalgamated to discuss this nation. The North and South did not meet until 1946, though amalgamation took place in 1914. There is a structural imbalance. So, this conference has given us an opportunity for the component units of the country to come together, for the first time, and discuss their union of how they want to live together so that we can live in peace and harmony. The suspicion is that President Jonathan has been stifled by the North, which is clamouring for power and that his sudden change of mind is spurred by the fact that he wants power in 2015. Well, sceptics are free to their opinions and I think the issue is that the credibility of President Jonathan is at stake or that he wants power but I think that should not be the consideration of those who love this country. It is just the fact that he has provided a window for reforms and we should turn that window into a door. I have said it before that the fears of the cynics is that they doubt Jonathan’s intention and also that they do not want Nigeria restructured. The major groups, given that the Okunrounmu panel has been going round the country, there is an emerging consensus that every section of Nigeria wants a conference. There may be divergence on how we should compose and there is the consensus that representation should be on the basis of nationalities. There is a kind of understanding that the existing geo-political zones should be used as basis for representation. Every section of this country has accepted the conference but the only people who are against this conference are the All Progressive Congress. What informed your allegation? It shows that they are in politics not for the people but about themselves. I think they have this thinking that this is their best time to go to the centre. They have been recruiting people from the Peoples Democratic Party which they said was a corrupt and useless party, they have been going round to meet governors to join them. There are some delusions in their approach, they must be poor students of history to think that they can vote any sitting president out of office. So for a group of people to think that one man will be in charge of the armed forces and they will still defeat him, I want to see them making that history. More importantly, people, over the years, have been talking about true federalism and the rest this is an opportunity for us to achieve that, and to now begin to raise all kinds of excuses to frustrate the desire of our people to get out of bondage shows one thing, they want to lead the people they do not understand. It takes the Yoruba people to come to a consensus on any issue but once they come to that consensus, it will be difficult to change position. Those who did it in the First Republic saw it, those who followed Abacha in 1993 to 1999, what happened to them? From the 1950s, what the Yoruba have fought for is Nigeria’s autonomy, true federalism, now they want to have that autonomy and some people want to stand on their way and say they cannot have it saying they should wait till after the 2015 election. They are deceiving our people. Go and ask for the APC manifesto today, it is there that they are committed to the same Constitution that enslaves our people. So if they say we should wait till after election, who are they deceiving, when they have written in their manifesto that they are committed to the existing Constitution? They just want to do ‘Gbajue’ for our people or one chance. And our people will not fall for that. From what happened in Akure and Lagos, it was clear that there was no organisation in Yoruba land that is not in support of this conference. Afenifere, Yoruba Unity Forum, OPC – everybody was there! It was clear where we are. So they are standing against the people and I watch them and laugh. One man came in the plane, he had not even stepped down from the plane and he said he does not want the conference and all of you now say that is the thing. Were the present governors in Yorubaland the same governors in Yorubaland in 1999? How can we talk about constitutional development and issue for Nigeria and some people, who are governors in the South- west, would not think they should consult their leaders – those who are the authorities in their states? That Fashola would not even ask Mr. Tunji Braithwaite: ‘Sir, what do you think about this matter? before taking sides with a man who just jumped down from the plane, who has not talked to anybody? That in Ogun State, Governor Ibikunle Amosun would not go to Kola Ajibola, a former Attorney- General, a former World Court judge – ‘what do you think sir, about this matter?’ before following a man who just came from the plane and was takling about the conference. That in Ekiti State, a Kayode Fayemi would not think that: what does Chief Afe Babalola or Wole Olanipekun think about this matter? Let this conference hold, after that, you will come and face the Yoruba people. How do you think this conference can be useful such that the Yoruba race can make the best out of it? Of the tripod in Nigeria, Yoruba is the only one that has never questioned the corporate existence of Nigeria. After the legislative crisis of 1946, the Sadauna was quoted to have said “the mistake of 1914 has come to fore”, that is the amalgamation was a mystic. And in the revenge coup of 1966, the theme was ‘Araba’, lets divide Nigeria. In fact, after the 1953 motion by Enahoro for independence, the North came out with their own agenda which amounted to nothing but confederation. When the Igbo got frustrated, they took up arms against Nigeria for three and a half years. In fact, at every point, in spite of what they did to Awolowo between 1960 and 1965, Yoruba never took arms against Nigeria, to say let us divide the country. For five years, we engaged Abacha; there was no resolution that we should divide Nigeria. So we believe Nigeria can prosper through federalism and Yoruba will be going to the conference asking for true federalism and regional autonomy. That is what we want out of this conference because we know the benefits and we know that dangers of not having it. Any experiment with a unitary Constitution in a multi-ethnic and multi- lingua nation is bound to fail. And if you are in doubt, go to Sudan – two major nationalities on unitary constitution were at war for over 50 years. In Cyprus; the Spanish speaking and the Turkish speaking, for over 1,000 years they have been together, there is still tension. In Syria today, the Kurds have been asking for autonomy for a long time. Even the problem in Iraq was because the one million Kurds there were asking for autonomy. Yugoslavia has disappeared from the world map since 1991. So we believe that for Nigeria not to disintegrate, we need to come together, understand ourselves and then constitute ourselves in a way that we can live together in peace and harmony. Why Nigeria is not working is that it is said that the speed of a convoy is that of the slowest moving vessel. That is, if you have ten vessels and there is one among them that does not have locomotion like the rest, that will be the speed of that convoy; except the others get frustrated and decide to break away from that convoy, they will continue to move at the same speed. That is what Nigeria has been doing in 53 years, because we are not exposed to the same level of speed at the same time. Between 1955 and 1965 when Awolowo led Western Nigeria, the least we spent on education was 29.8 percent in any year. There was even a time he spent 41 percent. Now suddenly you came and say you want…unitarism – you want to standardise – you want all of us who have not invested that kind of money to go at the same pace. So for as long as your son cannot score 200 in JAMB, my son who scores 201 does not have a place in the university whereas your own son who scored 100, because he is not from my area where I’ve invested in education over a long time, must go to the university while there is no space for my own. The second thing, it is said that birds of identical pulmage flock together. That is the normal thing, but in order not for birds of identical pulmage to flock together in Nigeria, Nigeria puts all the birds in one cage and locked them up and then because the birds are not in their natural habitats – because birds are supposed to fly – but they cannot fly anymore, then start to peck and bark at themselves inside the cage. But now the president has gone ahead to say the outcome of the conference is to be submitted to the National Assembly as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment, which those who against the idea have further pointed to as part of the flaws of the proposed conference? The statement made by the president was a convenient excuse for those who don’t want the conference ab- initio. Well, even if President Jonathan said we would take it to the National Assembly, which we have disagreed with, is it not better than them who said they are committed to the current Constitution that enslaves our people? We have disagreed with the president on that and I think the president himself must have seen what the people are saying. The final authority lies with the Nigerian people and it is very clear. The president put his view on the table but his view may not be the view. When we finish, the National Assembly promulgates our constitution into law; they will repeal the current the present decree which Abdulsalami promulgated; Decree 24, and put in the new Constitution that has been produced by we the people. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/national-confab-apc-standing-people-odumakin/ |

WILL Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State dump the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressive Congress, APC? This is the one million dollar question on the lips of many after the national leadership of the APC visited the governor at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Tuesday. Thousands of people had turned up from the 23 local government areas of the state that day to join Amaechi at the Helipad field in Government House, Port Harcourt to welcome the chieftains of the APC. Protocol officers had challenges controlling the large crowd. It was a similar situation at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa. As early as 6am that day, supporters of the governor had stormed the airport in their large numbers waiting to cheer him up on arrival. Amaechi had traveled out of the state the previous day; so he was expected back that morning ahead of the visit of the APC chieftains. There was a mild drama at the airport as the crowd was not allowed beyond a point, three to four kilometers to the airport premises by security operatives. The restriction did not dampen their spirit as they kept singing and chanting pro- Amaechi songs. The governor finally landed and was heading to Government House, Port Harcourt when he noticed thousands of his supporters at the Port Harcourt/ Elele road. On inquiry, he was told that security men did not allow them beyond that point. Amaechi had to alight from his vehicle and led them into the airport. They trekked a distance of about four kilometers. And together, they received the visiting chieftains of the APC. In a very long convoy, the governor and his visitors drove to Government House, Port Harcourt where another crowd of supporters had been waiting to be part of the event. The National Deputy Chairman of the PDP splinter group to which Amaechi and seven other governors belonging, Mr Sam Jaja, was the first to mount therostrum. He poured encomiums on the governor before the National Chairman of the APC; Chief Bisi Akande, was called to speak. Akande described Amaechi as a courageous leader who had continually resisted impunity. He said they were in the state to invite him to join the APC because it is a party for progressive minds like the governor. “This is another important stop, because it allows us, the APC leaders, not only to invite Chibuike Amaechi, the courageous governor of Rivers, to join the growing APC family, but to show our solidarity with a man who has succeeded in battling anti-democratic forces to a standstill,” Akande said. “Let us be clear. Our party has stood shoulder-to- shoulder with Gov. Amaechi since the beginning of his travails. We have been unrelenting in our support because our party stands for justice, fairness and unfettered freedom. We abhor dictatorship clad in fake democratic garments. “We believe that the system of government that we operate does not make provision for an imperial presidency, who can neither be criticised nor opposed. That is why we told those who said the APC is crying more than the bereaved on the Rivers State issue, that we are indeed the bereaved anytime the rule of law is supplanted with the rule of the jungle; and we are the bereaved anytime a democratically-elected president thumbs his nose at the Nigerian Constitution. Or how else do we explain a situation in which a duly elected governor, who is known to the Constitution as the Chief Security Officer of his state, is now being made to run his state side by side with the state police commissioner, who has been elevated to the de facto governor by the presidency?”. A former governor of Lagos State and chieftain of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who also lauded the courage of the governor, said he was impressed with the records of the administration. Tinubu said they were not in the state to campaign but to invite Amaechi to join the APC. He further moved a motion which enjoyed overwhelming endorsement from the crowd calling on the governor to cross over to the APC. General Muhammad Buhari lauded the success of the governor in the area of education, saying he was deeply impressed. “My hope rose today when the governor showed us his education programme. Education is the best legacy anybody can bequeath to any society. Education will help the people to look after themselves, their country and after the people. Ladies and gentlemen, I congratulate the governor for this noble step taken to liberate the people from ignorance and want. I have so much respect for the governor. We can as well see his effort in other sectors of the economy. Ladies and gentlemen, I can assure you that there will be hope for our children and ourselves come 2015. I thank you very much for this honor done us”, he said. The 23 local government chairmen in Rivers State also came out to pledge their unflinching loyalty to Amaechi, describing him as their political leader. They said they would follow him to any party of his choice. In their separate comments, spokesmen for the 26 pro-Amaechi members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the governor’s loyalists in the National Assembly also reaffirmed the unflinching support of the lawmakers to him. Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon Otelemaba Amachree , urged the governor to speedily decide on when he would join the APC. He said they were tired of hearing about his rumored romance with the APC, adding that what they would want to hear next was the marriage between him and the party.” What we are saying is that he should quickly hurry up because this romance with the APC is getting too long. We now want marriage,” Amachree said.. “He (governor) has been having nocturnal meetings with you; I must say we are sick and tired of these nocturnal meetings. In fact, what the people are now saying is marriage. Your Excellency, and of course, you know that when a bill is presented for assent and the governor fails to sign it, what happens? The House will veto it”. Senator Magnus Abe, who spoke for the senators behind the governor, described him as their leader even as he called on political parties to encourage internal discipline. On his part, Hon Andrew Uchendu of the House of Representatives pledged the loyalty of the pro- Amaechi members of the House of Representatives from the state to the governor. Amaechi was later called to respond to the request by the APC leadership to join the party. The governor, who looked visibly excited, grabbed the microphone and sang a popular Igbo Christian song, celebrating God in his life. He said he had listened to the various speakers but he would want to consult with President Goodluck Jonathan and other stakeholders in the political sector before deciding on whether to dump the PDP. The governor described himself as special in the committee of the seven governors of the ‘New PDP’ because he is from the same South-south zone with President Jonathan. “I am peculiar in the group of the seven governors. The president comes from our zone. I will consult our leaders, the president; I will consult you (referring to the mammoth crowd). I will consult all consultables. I will come back to you. The day we shall take a decision, it will be at the new stadium that can take 40,000 persons. If we are staying (referring to the PDP), we shall call the president to the stadium to address; us if we are going, we shall call Tinubu and Buhari to come and address us”, he said. Amaechi, who took on his political foes, said the political crisis in Rivers was largely due to his refusal to abuse public funds, stressing that he was not a corrupt governor.” They don’t accuse me of being corrupt. They only say I don’t run an inclusive government which is ‘chop I chop’.” he said. The governor said he would continue to pray to God to protect the state from those he accused of plotting to plunder its resources. Amaechi gave reasons why he danced excitedly at the funeral of the foster mother of the wife of President Jonathan in Okrika.. “I was told I would be stoned at Okrika if I went there. I went there, I raised my right hand, there was applause and the left, it was the same. I said ‘God I thank you’. “ He said those fighting him in the state were corrupt, adding that he was ready to engage them publicly on accountability and transparency in governance anytime he was called to do so. “Those on the other side are corrupt. We shall reply them one after the other. They have served and now are hungry. They are desperate and hungry politicians”. The governor, who said he would not compromise on good governance, dismissed the speculation that he might be sacked by a court verdict on Monday, 11 November. “” You have been hearing ‘we will remove him since’ 2007. Have I been removed! They talk as if they are God. They said we will be removed on the 11th which is Monday. Come that day, I will dance here”, he said while singing, “There is nobody greater than God. There is no one greater than the Lord divine”. Amaechi said his administration was constructing roads, building health centres, schools, adding that he had also commenced empowerment scheme for youths in the various wards in the state. The governor called on the people to resist acts of impunity on the part of the police command in the state. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/amaechi-buhari-tinubu-wont-defect-pdp-without-consulting-jonathan/ |
BEIRUT(AFP) – A Syrian lawmaker kidnapped by opposition jihadist fighters earlier this year was executed last week, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday. A parliamentary source in Damascus, on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Mujhem al-Sahu from Deir Ezzor province in eastern Syria had been executed, without specifying who was responsible. The source said 50-year- old Sahu was killed in Deir Ezzor but gave no additional details. Last month, the Observatory reported that another Syrian lawmaker, Mohanna Faisal al-Fayyad, a Sunni, had been kidnapped by Islamist and jihadist opposition fighters. The monitoring group said Ahrar al-Sham rebel fighters and jihadists from the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) abducted Fayyad on October 27. He was kidnapped after two days of clashes between members of his tribe, which supports the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, and rebel groups. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/syrian-mp-kidnapped-executed-jihadists/ |
