Politics / N176m Fraud: EFCC Presents Witness Against Fayose In Court by IgbereBlog: 11:27pm On Sep 27, 2019
The EFCC on Thursday presented its first witness against Isaac Fayose, who is standing trial for advance fee fraud before Justice Binta Muhammad of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Igbere TV reports.

At the resumed trial on Friday, Sept. 27, the prosecution counsel, Jude Obozuwa, presented Joe Onyiuke as witness. He told the court that he met Isaac Fayose sometime in 2009 and that he later visited him in his office and told him about a project he was about to start.

“Then I was working on classified assets as regional head. He took me to a property and told me it was given to him by his mother-in-law. It was a one storey building. He wanted to use it to fund a lounge or a restaurant,” Onyiuke said.

According to the witness in a statement issued by the EFCC, the property is located along Alex Ekwueme Road, opposite Jabi Lake, Abuja and hosts two churches, one, located upstairs and the other downstairs.

“The church upstairs was moving out when we visited. He said the church downstairs belonged to his personal friend and that he would allow him to stay there temporarily. He told me it was a serious business that he wanted us to do and we had to enter into agreement for the project.

“I released several amounts of money to him through one Samuel Ogala. But considering how far we have gone in the deal, I asked him about his own contribution. He gave me bogus figures and we agreed to appoint a quantity surveyor at that point and he came back and told me that he was no longer interested in the agreement,” the witness said.

Onyiuke told the court that there were evidences of the signed agreement between them adding that the first agreement was a joint venture agreement.

“The agreement took care of all the funds he collected from me through one Samuel Ogala. The rent was N8million (Eight Million Naira) for two years, amounting to N16million (Sixteen Million Naira) with a legal fee of N1.7million (One Million Seven Hundred Thousand Naira), totaling N17.6million (Seventeen Million Six Hundred Thousand). The agreement acknowledged the receipt of all the funds. I raised an objection that Isaac has to tell me when the Redeemed Christian Church of God will vacate the property and he told me that they will leave in two weeks and I brought a plain sheet of paper and asked him to write it down on paper,” he said.

The witness further revealed that the Redeemed Christian Church of God did not vacate the property, even after five months, prompting him to ask for the refund of his expenses.

“I told Isaac that he has to refund my money, which he didn’t. I put a call to him and he told me that he was just released from police cell. It was then that I realized that I was in trouble. He started threatening my life. I suffered so much blackmail from Isaac from that moment.”

According to him, the defendant went as far as writing the managing director of the bank where he worked urging that he should be investigated on how he got N17.6million he paid for the property.

He also stated that the defendant wrote again to his bank, urging that his private life be investigated on the allegation that he was having an affairs with his wife (defendant’s wife).

“I cleared all the allegations he leveled against me before my bank and showed them everything and the bank gave me an option to beg Isaac to stop tarnishing the bank’s image,” he added.

Igbere TV reports that Justice Muhammad adjourned the case to October 16, 2019, for continuation of trial at the instance of the defence counsel, Pascal Ngwu.

Politics / How I Shared N400m From Ex-president Jonathan - Metu by IgbereBlog: 11:03pm On Sep 27, 2019
Olisa Metuh, former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, on Friday, Sept 27 narrated in a Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Justice Okon Abang, how he distributed the N400million he collected from the Office of the National Security Adviser under Sambo Dasuki in 2014, in what he said was a “special national assignment,” in the lead up to the 2015 general election.

Igbere TV reports that Metu is facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside his company, Destra Investment on seven-count charges, bordering on money laundering to the tune of N400 million.

According to the EFCC, Metuh who is the defence team’s 15th witness under cross-examination by the prosecution counsel told the court that there was never an instance where the former President Goodluck Jonathan directly paid any money to him.

He said that the payment of N400 million, allegedly approved by Goodluck Jonathan, was for the national assignment as directed by the then president.

Upon being shown the statement of his account which had N6.6million before an inflow of N400 million into it on November 24, 2014, he narrated to court how he disbursed the money in what he said was a 'national assignment'.

He said there was an outflow of N7.5 million from the amount through a cheque to a company, CNC Connect on December 2, 2014, another payment of N21.7 million to Chief Anenih and N50 million to Kanayo/Olisah Metuh which is a joint account on December 4, 2014. On that same date, he narrated that there was another outflow of N31.5 million to Richard Ehidioha

He also told the court of two separate payments of N200 million and N300 million to Daniel Ford International also on December 4, 2014.

Other subsequent expenditures he said are payments to CNC Connect in the sum of N70 million on December 15, 2014; N25 million to Abba Dabo on December 16, 2014 and N5 million to Ambassador Kema Chikwe.

He told the court that a final report he submitted to the then president had all the expenditures of the N400 million, captured in receipts and signatures for all payment of monies in cash and through several accounts for the special assignment. He said he had about 19 accounts of which more than five are in Diamond Bank.

Metu also told the court that he made an investment of $2million dollars in cash in ARM, through an ARM staff, Miss Nneka Ararume.

When asked if the equivalent of the $2million was paid in naira into Dextra’s account which was to the tune N366 million at that time, he said, "We led evidence to show that the $2 million was paid by me to ARM and the prosecution had led evidence to show that Nneka Ararume paid monies to bureau de change which now transferred the monies into my account."

He said he did not have any dealings with the bureau de change, recalling that Miss Ararume told the court that she got his account details from his record with ARM and gave it to the bureau de change.

When asked if the non-payment of $2million dollars into his account was to conceal the origin of the money, Metuh said the non-payment of the sum into his account was the failure of his account officer to execute a lawful and legal directive.

Justice Abang adjourned the matter to September 30, 2019 for continuation of trial, reports Igbere TV.

Politics / Police Uncover Slave House Disguised As School In Kaduna (photos) by IgbereBlog: 3:14pm On Sep 27, 2019
The police in Kaduna State have raided an ‘Islamic school’ building where over 300 young children were enchained and tortured by their supposed teachers.

The children under slave-style torture at the “school”, were said to have been maltreated for at least three months before the police came to their rescue.

The place, which doubles as a rehabilitation camp, was being operated by one Ismaila Abubakar and six others, according to the police.

Police spokesman, Yakubu Sabo said children as young as 10 years old and young men as old as 18 were found all chained at the building.

“It is true. Yesterday, the command acted on intelligence that there was a school where children over three hundred were caged in a place. It was more of a rehab than a school, but it was not registered. The commissioner of police led other senior officers to the place for on the spot assessment,” he said.

“When we got there, we found over 300 children, some of them young men, 18 years old. When we tried to find out exactly what was going on they said the children were undergoing Arabic studies and some of them socially maladjusted, that’s people who are maybe drug addicts are brought there for modification. This man has no specialised knowledge of behaviour modification. He is not a psychologist. Also, the school was not registered. And the parents even complained that when they bring their children, they will not have the children at will. When they come, the school authorities will tell them that they cannot see their children till after three months.

“So they were not in the picture of what was actually happening to the children. When we got there, you should have seen how happy the children were, because they had been in bondage. Some of them below the age of 10, subjected to this dehumanizing treatment. Some of them had scars, indicating that they had been wounded,” the police spokesman added.

Politics / EFCC Docks Banker For Multi-million Naira Fraud by IgbereBlog: 3:19pm On Sep 26, 2019
The Maiduguri Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, September 26, 2019 arraigned one Adam Kaka Adam before Justice Ibrahim Jauro of the Yobe State High Court, Damaturu, on one-count charge, bordering on criminal misappropriation to the tune of N11, 657, 500.00 (Eleven Million Six Hundred and Fifty-seven Thousand Five Hundred Naira).

Adam was a former Service Manager, in charge of Vault Room and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Unity Bank Plc, Damaturu Branch, Yobe State.

Trouble started for him when the EFCC received a petition against him from his employer (Unity Bank Plc), alleging criminal misappropriation of the said sum, meant to be fed the ATM machines of the branch which he is alleged to have dishonestly converted to his personal use.

The charge reads: “That you, Adam Kaka Adam, while being the Branch Service Manager with Unity Bank Plc, Damaturu, Yobe State, in charge of the Vault Room and Automated Teller Machines (ATM), sometime in 2017 at Damaturu, Yobe State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court and in such capacity dishonestly took the sum of N11, 657, 500.00 (Eleven Million Six Hundred and Fifty Seven Thousand Five Hundred Naira) only, being the property of Unity Bank Plc without its consent and with intention of permanently depriving it of the said sum and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Sections 286(1) and 287 of the Penal Code Law, Laws of Yobe State of Nigeria respectively.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. Following his plea, prosecution counsel Khalid Sanusi prayed the court for a trial date and for the defendant to be remanded in prison custody.

Justice Jauro admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the matter to October 15, 2019 for commencement of trial.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT BUHARI LAUDS BILL GATES/ALIKO DANGOTE FOR SERVICE TO HUMANITY

Photos By Sunday Aghaeze

President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday applauded the contributions of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as Aliko Dangote Foundation to humanitarian and developmental activities in Nigeria.

Meeting with the duo at the sidelines of the 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the President said they have touched humanity in many positive ways, and congratulated them “for achieving what you had set out to do.”

“Thanks for deriving pleasure in helping people. Congratulations to you for returning part of your wealth to the people in diverse ways.

Whatever we save in areas in which you have intervened, we can deploy to other areas like building of infrastructure,” President Buhari said.
On agriculture, in which Alhaji Dangote makes huge investments, the President noted that farmers were very happy in Nigeria now, “as we have made fertilizer available, cut the price by half, and given many other incentives. They have no regret going back to the lands. The more we invest in agriculture, the better for us.”

Mr Gates congratulated President Buhari “for assembling a cabinet that excites us,” saying he was pleased that one of the priorities of the administration was human capital development, of which health, nutrition and education are key components.

Noting that Bill and Melinda Gates as well as Aliko Dangote Foundations keep track of Nigeria’s attainments on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as enunciated by the United Nations, he submitted that they were encouraged that there was improvement in reduction of child mortality.
“Every local government area has better health/education situation today than in year 2000. We are delighted about that. Nigeria is our biggest commitment in Africa. It’s only in India we do more in the world,” Mr Gates said.

On polio eradication, he said Nigeria reached a zero wild polio virus free milestone for three years in August, noting that the next six months were critical, so that the country could finally be declared polio free.

Alhaji Dangote appreciated the Nigerian military for helping with vaccination in the theatres of war while fighting insurgency, thus adding to the advances in the country’s polio status.

Politics / FG To Fix Roads To Ease Fuel Distribution, Commuting by IgbereBlog: 10:52am On Sep 25, 2019
PRESS RELEASE

FG TO FIX ROADS TO EASE FUEL DISTRIBUTION, COMMUTING –FASHOLA

Says funding, inclement weather major challenges

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, has assured Nigerians that critical roads across the country, particularly those leading to fuel depots would soon be fixed in order to enhance fuel distribution and ease the usual high traffic during the ember months.

Fashola spoke in his office in Abuja while responding to a request by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for urgent intervention by the Ministry on some roads leading to fuel depots without the distribution of petroleum products during the festive months could be seriously hampered.

The Minister, who assured that arrangements were already being put in place to fix such roads and a number of those which conditions had deteriorated as a result of heavy rainfalls, listed such selected roads to include Suleja-Bida-Lapai-Lambata;Oyo–Ogbomosho-Ilorin;Jebba-Mokwa-Tegina;Benin-Sapele-Warri;Benin-Auchi-Okenne;Enugu-Onitsha;Awka-Amansea and Odukpani-Itu roads.

On the state of the listed roads, Fashola explained that the Suleja-Lambata-Minna Road was in a fairly good condition adding that the failed portions were slated for emergency repairs during the ember month’s programme while work is ongoing on the Bida-Lapai-Lambata Roads where the contractor handling it has already stabilized a substantial part of the road.

The Bida–Minna Road, the Minister explained, is a Niger State Government Road and is in a fairly good condition while the Suleja –Lambata –Minna Road; is a Federal Government road under SUKUK funding.

Disclosing that his Ministry had commenced discussions with the contractors handling the various road projects for the commencement of repair and rehabilitation works as soon as the rains subside, Fashola said approval has been given for the Engineering Corps of the Nigerian Army to repair the bad portions of the Bokani-Makaera-Tegina-Birnin Gwari Road in Niger and Kaduna States, which is currently under procurement, due to the security situation in that axis.

He further explained that funding has also been a challenge, adding that the Federal Government would endeavour to meet its financial obligations to the contractors handling the various road projects to ensure that they returned to the sites.

He said work on the Oyo-Ogbomosho-Ilorin Road is on-going by the contractor handling the project, which, he explained, is one of the projects that received dedicated funding under SUKUK. According to him, although the project is being challenged by the current weather situation and funding, the old alignment of the Oyo-Ogbomosho route is receiving palliative attention.

On the Ilorin –Jebba –Mokwa Road, which is under a dualization contract, Fashola explained that the project has been divided into two sections with Ilorin –Jebba in Kwara State as Section1: while Section II comprises Jebba–Mokwa–Bokani Junction in Niger State adding that it is a new project and mobilization was still being processed.

For Okene–Lokoja Road, which is in four sections and under SUKUK funding, he explained that all the contractors handling the various sections had been directed to do palliative work on the failed portions of the road.

He said while a Federal Government appointed contractor is currently working on the Enugu –Onitsha Road, the bad portions of the Awka –Amansea Road are being repaired by the Anambra State Government.

For the Odukpani –Itu Road, the Minister said the contracting firm which is handling the project, has left the site as a result of the challenges of the weather situation and funding adding that the Ministry is currently intensifying efforts to address the challenges for the company to return to site as soon as possible.

Politics / Alleged N90bn FIRS Fund: Osinbajo Demands Retraction From Vanguard by IgbereBlog: 10:10am On Sep 25, 2019
FALANA & FALANA CHAMBERS
September 24, 2019

Mr. Eze Anaba,
The Editor,
Vanguard Newspaper,
Apapa, Lagos.

Re: N90 bn FIRS election fund, Osinbajo's problem, not 2023 politics-Frank

We are solicitors to Professor Yemi Osinbanjo SAN, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (hereinafter referred to as “our client”) on whose behalf and instructions we write this letter.

Our client’s attention has been drawn to your highly libelous story entitled “N90 bn FIRS election fund, Osinbanjo’s problem, not 2023 politics-Frank” recklessly published in the Vanguard newspaper edition of September 23, 2019.

In the story credited to one Comrade Timi Frank, your newspaper informed your large readership that our client’s travail “has nothing to do with 2023 but alleged mismanagement of about N90 Billion Naira (sic) released by the Federal Inland Revenue Inland Service (FIRS) to prosecute the last general elections in favour of the APC”.

The false contextual background and specific untrue and defamatory statement include the following:

"The presidency discovered how Osinbajo allegedly mismanaged N90billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

When confronted by the presidency, he confirmed to General Buhari that he indeed allegedly took N90billion from FIRS but it was used for the 2019 presidential election campaign in strategic states of the South-west.

Gen Buhari asked for a breakdown of how the money was spent and he said he gave N11 billion to Lagos state APC leader but when the said national leader and one former APC chairman were invited for an explanation, it was confirmed that Osinbajo gave only N5billion and not N11billion to Lagos state.

'The cabal is asking to know how come they beat PDP in the South-west with less than 60,000 votes if the money was actually spent in the strategic states of the South-west as allegedly claimed.'

The activist insisted that if the information is true, Osinbajo must resign his position as Vice President, adding that such is akin to the characteristics of ‘yahoo boys."

It is clear that the entire publication was a vicious, wicked and reckless ploy to impugn the reputation of our client and lower him in the estimation of right thinking members of the public. Without any scintilla of evidence you deliberately gave the dubious impression that our client colluded with the Federal Inland Revenue Service to divert public funds to the tune of N90 billion to prosecute the 2019 general elections in the South west region.

In view of the foregoing we have our client’s firm instructions to request for the immediate retraction of the offensive and derogatory publication coupled with apology prominently published in your newspaper.

Take notice that if we do not receive your formal retraction and apology within 24 hours of the receipt of this letter, we shall proceed with our client’s instructions to seek legal remedies including aggravated damages in the appropriate High Court.

Yours Sincerely,

FEMI FALANA, SAN

Politics / ISIS-backed Boko Haram Faction ‘Executes’ Nigerian Aid Worker by IgbereBlog: 9:25am On Sep 25, 2019
The Islamic States’ West Africa Province (ISWAP) has allegedly executed one of the six aid workers it abducted from Nigeria’s North East region.

This was disclosed by Ahmad Salkida, an investigative journalist and terrorism reporter, in a tweet sighted by Igbere TV, Wednesday, Sept. 25.

According to Salkida, the group said it took the action because the Nigerian government deceived them following months and series of unfruitful negotiations.

Though the name of the executed aid worker was not given, the journalist said he worked with the Action Against Hunger (AAH) in Borno State.

This comes barely a week after the military shut down operations of the AAH in North East, accusing the group of aiding and abetting Boko Haram activities.

The action of the Nigerian army is coming barely two months after six workers of the AAH group were forcefully abducted from Borno.

Igbere TV learned that the terrorist group are threatening to execute the remaining five aid workers in their custody if nothing is done by the Nigerian government.

“Just In: #ISWAP has executed one of the six aid workers, working with the Action Against Hunger that were abducted two months ago in Borno. One of the male aid workers was executed at close range in a short video clip seen by this reporter.

“The group, in a horrific video of the execution, said it took the action because "the government deceived them" following months of what is now known as secret negotiations between a team of intermediaries and unnamed officials.

“ISWAP has also threatened to execute the other remaining staff of the International Non Governmental organization (ACF/AAH). Recall, the INGO was declared persona non grata last week by the @HQNigerianArmy for aiding terrorism in the region, an allegation the INGO denied”, Salkida wrote.

Politics / Nigerians React As President Buhari Redeploys Keyamo To Labour Ministry by IgbereBlog: 10:25pm On Sep 24, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, approved the immediate redeployment of Mr Festus Keyamo from Ministry of Niger Delta to Labour and Productivity.

In a statement obtained by Igbere TV signed by the Secretary to Government of the Federation, the redeployment takes effect from today, Tuesday Sept. 24.

Although, no reason was given for the redeployment, sources close to the presidency said Keyamo has been finding it “difficult” to work with the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio.

Before he was appointed into the Cabinet as junior minister, Keyamo was the counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, prosecuting Akpabio on corruption charges.

Both Ministers were seen few days after they were assigned portfolios at the Presidential Villa ostensibly, trying to work out their areas of responsibilities.

Igbere TV reliably gathered that President Buhari had no other choice but to separate them after several efforts to make them work together failed.

Politics / Nigerians React As DSS Charges Sowore For ‘insulting Buhari’ by IgbereBlog: 8:07am On Sep 21, 2019
Nigerians on Twitter have attacked the President Muhammadu Buhari led government over the charges against Omoyele Sowore, SaharaReporters publisher.

Igbere TV had reported that the Department of State Service (DSS) are charging the activist over alleged treasonable felony.

He is also being charged for ‘insulting the president ’, ‘cyberstalking’ Buhari, ‘conspiracy to commit treason’, among others.

In the charge sheet obtained exclusively by us, dated Sept 19, the DSS accused Sowore of granting an interview which drew insults on the president.

Sowore was arrested on August 3, 2019 in Lagos for planning a series of protests against “bad leadership” in Nigeria under the #RevolutionNow movement.

The DSS had earlier obtained a 45-day detention order against the former presidential candidate, which, however, elapses today.

Politics / Osinbajo Explains Why President Buhari Created New Economic Team by IgbereBlog: 7:49pm On Sep 20, 2019
Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has explained the reason why his Economic Management Team (EMT) was disbanded by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Rumours were rife that President Buhari disbanded the team to drastically reduce the Vice President’s power, in the midst of an alleged rift between the duo.

But reacting, the Vice President said the newly constituted Economic Advisory Council (EAC) was put together by President Buhari to assist him (Osinbajo).

Osinbajo stated this at a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), yesterday, which he presided over at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as earlier reported by us.

Speaking through the Governor of Gombe State, Osinbajo said the clarification became necessary following a request by the Governors on the relationship between NEC and EAC.

According to the Governor, the Vice President told them that NEC could be briefed regularly on the activities of the EAC, with the president’s permission.

His words: “Governors requested clarification from the council chairman (Osinbajo), on the relationship between the NEC and the newly formed Economic Advisory Council.

“And the vice president explained that the council is advisory for the benefit of Mr President, while the NEC is established by the constitution; they are to complement one another.

“He (Osinbajo) added that NEC could be briefed regularly on the activities of the Economic Advisory Council with the permission of Mr President.”
