Speaking with newsmen in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, the Igbere TV boss called on government at all level to make education a priority.

Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has thrown his weight behind the aspiration of Senator Ahmad Lawan, who has been adopted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as its candidate for the Senate President of the Ninth National Assembly.

Igbere TV reports that, Kalu, who is also a Senator-elect on the APC platform, formally endorsed Lawan on Sunday night at his (Kalu) Abuja residence.

The Forbes-rated billionaire, who addressed journalists in Abuja said he is fully behind the aspiration of Lawan.

Our FCT correspondent reports that Minister of Labour, Sen. Chris Nigige, Sen. Barau Jibrin, Prof Benard Okor and Prof A.U Akpan, were in attendance and witnessed the event.

Igbere TV recalls that, Kalu, who had earlier indicated interest in the Senate Presidency post, said he was withdrawing to contest Deputy Senate President position.

“I am going to be withdrawing from the (Senate Presidency) race to run for Deputy Senate President because party is supreme,” he said.

The Senator-elect, while making case for the South-East, argued that the Federal Government cannot afford to edge out the region out of distribution of positions in the new dispensation.

He said it was only fair that the position was retained in the South-East, stressing that both President Muhammadu Buhari and APC Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, were well aware of this.

“Nigeria is tripod; Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa. So, if justice must prevail, you have to bring the Senate President from the North-East and you bring the Deputy Senate President to the South-East,” Kalu added.

“Positions are part of representations. I am saying if we have DSP, it gives a sense of belonging to everybody. I am not saying I am representing a section. If they go to a meeting, you have the President, Vice President, Senate President and Deputy Senate President but you don’t have anybody to represent the South East. That is unfair and that is what I am saying. I am not a tribalist, but someone who is fair. I want justice.”

He further maintained that he was qualified for the position having being a former member of the Federal House of Representatives from 1991 to 1993 and also a two-time governor.

Igbere TV had reported that the South-East caucus of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has demanded a review of the zoning arrangement ahead of the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly.

The South-East APC, while endorsing Kalu for Deputy Senate President at its zonal meeting held in Enugu, called on the national leadership of the party to review the current sharing formula which does not favour the zone.

The meeting presided over by the National Vice Chairman of the party, South-East, Chief Emma Eneukwu, had in attendance Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, his Labour counterpart, Dr. Chris Ngige, former Gov. and Senator-elect, Dr. Orji-Uzor Kalu, former minister, Chief Emeka Worgu, serving and incoming members of the National Assembly, among others.

Similarly, the Abia State APC had endorsed the former governor for the position of Deputy Senate President.

The endorsement came at an enlarged meeting of the Abia State APC executive barely 24 hours after the South-East caucus meeting held in Enugu.

Moving the motion for the endorsement of Kalu, Chairman of Abia APC caucus, Senator Chris Adighije, said the adoption of Kalu was not only popular, but was in tandem with the yearnings of people of the South-East.

Adighije advised the APC national leadership not to forget that Nigeria stands on a tripod, and stressed that for this to be acknowledged and respected, the South East should be given what was due it.

On his part, the state APC chairman, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa, said the endorsement of Kalu was the collective demand of all APC members in the South-East and Abia State.

The Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide, YCYW, has issued a 7-day ultimatum to all Fulani herdsmen to vacate all territories, towns, villages and highways in all Southwest states of Oyo, Lagos, Osun, Ondo, Ogun and Ekiti, in the interest of peace and progress, Igbere TV reports.

In a statement sent to Igbere TV on Friday, the group said “the rising wave of insecurity across the nation and recurrent decimal of flagrant brutal killings by the gun wielding Fulani Herdsmen/Boko Haram, aggressive invasion, violent attacks and kidnapping of innocent Yorubas and Nigerians around Ojokoro, Ibadan to Ife road, Ibadan to Ijebu Ode/Benin Ore road, Ekiti to Akure and other highways”, precipitated its decision.

The statement dated May 23, was signed by the group’s President, Barr. Aremo Oladotun Hassan.

The statement, according to the group, was issued at the end of its emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on the 23rd of May, 2019, “in view of the rate of kidnapping and killing involving Fulani Herdsmen across the Southwest region.”

The statement with the title, ‘7 Days Final Quit Notice To All Fulani Herdsmen in South-West’, added that failure to comply with the directive, would force the YCYW leadership to forcefully clean up and root out all Fulani Herdsmen/Boko Haram terrorists in all hiding creeks and forests in the South-West geo-political zone of Nigeria, at the end of the 7-day quit notice, “which lapse on the night of Thursday 30th May, 2019.”

It revealed that 20-million-man comprising of all YCYW members across all the local governments and communities within Southwestern states have been mobilized to comb and move into all forests, creeks and flash points for cattle breeders, at the expiration of this notice.

The YCYW threatened to shut down all palaces of Hausa/Fulani communities within the Southwest, adding that the group will be forced to move against all investments and businesses owned by any Hausa/Fulani extraction within Southwest, at the end of the 7-day notice.

While berating the Federal Government for comparing the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to Afenifere and other socio-cultural groups, the group alleged that the FG has proven to protect the Fulani hersdemen with the additional approval of Fulani radio station network across the nation and a promise of N100 billion to MACBAN.

“The leadership of the Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide (YCYW) alongside other leading Yoruba youth organizations in Yoruba Land: a coalition of all yoruba indigenous youth and student organizations in Nigeria and in Diaspora, with the sole aim of enthroning rule of law, security of lives and properties, good governance and succinct democratic ethos predicated on Awoism credos and peaceful coexistence of Nigeria.

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has stated that the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) under his watch will address all issues that come its way “as amicably as possible in the overall interest” of the country.

Igbere TV reports that, Fayemi, who spoke moments after he was unanimously elected as Chairman of the Forum on Wednesday night, said he is ready to build on the commitment of his predecessors by ensuring that states have a strong partnership with the Federal Government as federating units.

He explained that his election as Chairman and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, as Vice Chairman showed that the Forum represents Nigeria regardless of political persuasion.

The new Chairman pledged that states would be strengthened to make them become more dedicated to the citizens; adding that this will also become beneficial to the country at large.

ex-Face of Igbere, Queen Nelly to Represent Nigeria at Miss Tourism Int’l in China (Photos)

Ex-Beauty Queen Nelly Mbonu, has been selected to represent Nigeria at Miss Tourism International, in China.

The pageantry will be hosted in Beijing, China’s capital in September, 2019.

Miss Tourism International aims to promote global awareness in areas such as culture, tourism, historical heritage, preservation of the environment and world peace among others.

Miss Mbonu came to limelight after clinching on the prestigious Face of Igbere Crown in early 2013, a title she held until late December.

Face of Igbere is a pageant which focuses on community building and giving back to the community. It seeks to educate and empower young women. It also aims to give them the opportunity to build their self-confidence, self-image and to showcase their talent in the pageant industry.

The pageant show which is supported by some prominent figures in the South-eastern part of Nigeria is fast gaining attention across Nigeria.

The show is hosted annually since 2010 by Emeh James Anyalekwa, Special Assistant (Media) to former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, Senator-elect for Abia North Senatorial district.

Speaking with Igbere TV on Tuesday, the beauty queen called on well meaning Nigerians for support, to enable her participate fully, and bring the crown home.

Mbonu, who is Nigeria's representative at the global pageant, told Igbere TV that she needed financial support to cover her transportation and other expenses.

“I have only managed to raise some money, but it is only a fraction of the amount I need,” she said.

“Please I need the support of Nigerians to enable me compete in the pageant.

“I was so excited to clinch on the Nigerian Representative slot, it showed that I had the most support and a very good chance of bringing the title home.

“However, the joy turned to sadness after I realised the pageant would be held less than three months from now and yet I don’t have the money for the trip. I am now helplessly watching the days go by with no solution in sight.

“Nigerian’s should translate the support they have been giving me by voting for me into financial support so that I can go and showcase this nation’s rich cultural heritage at a global stage,” Miss Mbonu noted pensively.

Mbonu said the beauty pageant will not only teach her to have confidence but keep her off the street and teach her values and the importance of education.

President Muhammadu Buhari has cancelled his one-day official visit to Imo State billed for Tuesday (Today), Igbere TV can report.

Igbere TV reports that the President was expected in Imo to commission, among other projects, a statue of him, constructed by the Imo state government.

Igbere TV gathered that an advance team of aides and journalists of the President, have already arrived Owerri for the anticipated visit.

But in a statement made available to Igbere TV on Tuesday, the state government said the visit was postponed as the president was yet to return from Saudi Arabia where he performed this year’s holy pilgrimage.

The statement was signed by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Sam Onwuemeodo.

“We humbly wish to inform the general public and Imo people in particular that His Excellency, the president and Commander -in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, has not returned from Saudi Arabia where he is at the moment with other Muslims from all parts of the world on pilgrimage.

“Against the backdrop of this development, the scheduled visit of the president to Imo State for the commissioning of some key projects of Governor Rochas Okorocha on Tuesday May 21, 2019 (today) has been postponed,” the statement read.

While pleading for understanding of the people of the state, the CPS said that a new date for the visit will also be made public in due course.

Following a court order, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has withdrawn twenty-five (25) Certificates of Return from some winners at the last 2019 general elections.

This was revealed by Festus Okoye, INEC Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, while speaking at the ‘Forum on Media Coverage of 2019 General Elections’ held in Enugu.

Igbere TV correspondent at the event reports that Okoye lauded the coverage of the 2019 elections by the media.

He also tasked the media to constantly keep the people abreast of every amendment done to the Electoral Act of the country.

He said that INEC had completed the retrieval and issuance of the 25 certificates of return on Friday, May 17, 2019.

Giving a breakdown of the certificate withdrawn, Okoye said 22 of the 25 certificates withdrawn were as a result of intra-party lawsuit.

“20 of the 25 certificates-of-return were withdrawn from All Progressive Congress (APC) members to other APC members; while two from People Democratic Party (PDP) members were withdrawn and issued to other PDP members.

“The other three were withdrawn from APC and PDP and given to other political parties.”

Commending the media, the INEC Information and Voter Education Committee Chairman said the media has become a platform for the explanation of INEC political and electoral decisions.

“The media and its practitioners to dig deep into the Electoral Act to ensure that the import of the recently amended sections is made known to the public.

“The media should also centre on the aspect of using Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to resolve electoral issues especially at the party levels instead of going to the court.”

Tension is currently mounting in Kano as no fewer than70 prominent indigenes of Kano State and 22 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have charged all newly appointed emirs to resign their appointments with immediate effect.

They have been told to resign in the interest of peace and tranquility in Kano.

Igbere TV gathered that the concerned individuals and groups have sought urgent intervention of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Mohammad Sa’ad Abubakar and denounce the creation of additional emirates in Kano.

Igbere TV recalls that Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had signed the Appointment and Deposition Act. 2019, which paved ways for balkanisation of the Kano Emirate council into four.

Subsequently, four new emirs were appointed for Rano, Gaya, Bichi and Karaye, with first class status.

But speaking at a media briefing yesterday on behalf of The Renaissance Coalition in collaboration with the CSOs and other stakeholders, Comrade Abdulrahman Baffa Yola, asked Governor Ganduje to rather dissipate his energy towards tackling the socio-economic and development challenges in Kano.

Besides, he lamented the hasty passage of the Appointment and Deposition Act, 2019, which lasted only 48 hours and without due legislative process.

“Kano State has over two million Almajiris roaming the streets, without any tangible and sustainable intervention to checkmate the ugly situation.

“Kano leads in substance and drugs abuse, we have the highest number of school drop outs and congested classrooms in the country, with over 150–200 pupils in one class,” he stated.

Abdulrahman also urged Ganduje to tackle unemployment and provide jobs for the 3.5 million unemployed youths in Kano and provide education for the over two million girls who do not attend formal school in Kano.

He also enjoined the governor to provide potable water for the over five million people who do not have access to clean drinking water and delist Kano from the list of states with the highest maternal mortality rate in Nigeria and not the creation of new emirates.

Igbere TV reports that another member of the coalition, Barrister Saida Sa’ad, accused the State House of Assembly of violating legislative process and giving undue attention to what she described as an unpopular bill.

Former Governor of Abia and Senator-elect for Abia North Senatorial District, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, on Tuesday met with President Nicolàs Maduro, President of Federal Republic of Venezuela.

Igbere TV reports that the meeting of both leaders comes barely 48 hours after Orji Kalu strike an oil deal with the Venezuelan government.

Recall that Kalu had during the weekend, secured a major oil deal with the Venezuelan government in far away Caracas.

Igbere TV had reported that the former governor and some of his aides are in Venezuela on a business trip.

He was received by H.E Dr Martin N. Cobham, Nigerian Ambassador to Venezuela, upon his arrival.

Our correspondent present reports that the meeting afforded both leaders opportunity to strengthen the ties between both countries - Nigeria and Venezuela.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting, President Maduro expressed readiness to work closely with the Nigerian government, while congratulating Kalu on his electoral victory as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He also congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election for a second term.

The President who could not hide his joy after the meeting, took to Twitter to express gratitude to the former Abia State governor.

“I received brother Orji Uzor Kalu, Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I expressed my congratulations to the recent electoral victory of President Elect, Muhammadu Buhari. We ratify our readiness to continue to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation,” he tweeted.

On his part, Dr. Kalu said he was glad by the assurances of President Maduro to continue to deepen the existing Nigerian-Venezuelan relationship.

He wrote, “It was a great pleasure meeting with the President of the Republic of Venezuela, Nicolàs Maduro. He extended his congratulations to President Muhammadu Buhari over his electoral victory. I'm glad by his assurances to continue to deepen the Nigerian-Venezuela Relationship.”

Kalu, a Forbes-rated billionaire businessman, has been seen in different countries in the past few weeks obviously on the move to attract development to his immediate Constituency, Abia North, and Nigeria, in general.

Aside being a philanthropist and politician, OUK, as fondly called, has built a business empire with vast investments in oil and gas, banking, insurance, media and publishing, real estate, agriculture, aviation, hospitality, shipping, construction, manufacturing and others operating under the parent company: SLOK Group. These business entities have on their payroll thousands of Nigerians and non-Nigerians.

Even though he is yet to be sworn in as a Senator, the billionaire philanthropist had on different fora, reiterated that his constituents will benefit a lot from his representation at the National Assembly.
