Politics / Minister Of Finance, Zainab, Addresses World Bank (photos) by IgbereBlog: 6:40pm On Sep 20, 2019
Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, on Friday, delivered a keynote address at the launch of the ‘Social Safety Nets Africa Report’ by the World Bank, Igbere TV reports.

In her address, the Minister gave some contextual background on the importance of undertaking a continent-wide approach for social safety-nets, saying that “extreme poverty remains a pervasive phenomenon, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa”.

Ahmed mentioned that in wake to the complexity of these issues, governments in these regions have initiated several programs to “halt the spread of poverty”.

The Minister said that the Nigerian government has established several social intervention programmes such as the ERGP, the NSIP to “give life of dignity to all Nigerians especially the poor”.

According to Minister Ahmed, from the preview of the report “a lot of interventions are occurring in Africa” and some trends worth noting are;

(i) that Social registries are currently used in 23 countries and are being developed in 13 countries;

(ii) there is an emphasis on strengthening coordination among programmes and investing in shared systems to reduce the duplication of efforts and cost inefficiencies is evolving;

(iii) there is also a shift towards greater use of cash in social safety nets;

(iv) there is an increasing number of programmes put emphasis on building the productive capacity and resilience of beneficiary households;

(v) there is increased focus on promoting human capital development; and

(vi) a growth in social safety nets in urban settings. Very interesting for us as a people is that the report highlighted the fact that social safety nets are widely used as short term responses to shocks.

Igbere TV reports that the suspects were arraigned before the Bayelsa State High Court sitting in Yenagoa, on Friday, September 20.

Recall that the police had in June arrested some persons for breaking into her Otuoke home, carting away jewelries and other valuables worth N3bn.

They were said to have stolen seven gold bangles and jewelries, five Samsung air conditioners, two sets of upholstery chairs, and six Samsung flat screen television stands.

Those arraigned include Golden Vivian (40yrs), Erama Deborah (45yrs), Precious Kingsley (20yrs), Vincent Olabiyi (28yrs), Ebuka Cosmos (25yrs), Williams Alamo (29yrs), Tamunokuro Abaku (32yrs) and Boma Oba (42yrs).

A 17 count charge of conspiracy to commit murder, felony with armed robbery, malicious injury to property, stealing and burglary were preferred against the suspects on Friday.

They all pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against them.

But one of the suspects, who is a staff of an hotel owned by the former First Lady, confessed to have duplicated the keys to the rooms where the valuables were kept.

The presiding judge, thereafter, adjourned trial to a later date, and asked that the suspects be remanded in prison.

Politics / Road Construction: Nkalagu Hail Ugwuanyi For Remembering Them After 35 Yrs After by IgbereBlog: 6:33pm On Sep 17, 2019
35-years after the Eha-Amufu-Nkalagu road was abandoned by previous governments, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has set another record with the massive reconstruction of the road, which links Enugu to Ebonyi.

Findings by Igbere TV revealed that the hitherto dilapidated road which was last maintained by the Governor Jim Nwobodo led administration of old Anambra State is now wearing a new look.

Igbere TV news crew, who were in transit to Ebonyi State to cover an event, had to stop at the project site for an on-spot assessment.

Some members of the community who were interviewed by our correspondents, could not hide their joy but heaped praises on Governor Ugwuanyi.

One of them, Mr. Emeka Odoh who is a civil servant in the community has this to say; “We are very grateful to the Governor for remembering us after 35 years of abandonment by past administrations.”

One of them, Mr. Emeka Odoh who is a civil servant in the community has this to say; “We are very grateful to the Governor for remembering us after 35 years of abandonment by past administrations.”

“This road was done last by Governor Jim Nwobodo. We made complaints about its bad state for many years now but it seems those governments were not interested. Thank God for giving us a loving Governor like Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who always understands the yearnings of the people he governs. This is a sign of better things to happen in our community”, he added.

On her part, Mrs Jane Abonyi, a petty trader, said, “Governor Ugwuanyi is an answer to our prayer. We the traders find it so hard to move our products to the town where people demand for it. Eha-Amufu people are doing well in Agriculture but the bad road is always a very big problem to us. God will bless Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for remembering us.”

An indigene of Ebonyi State, Mr Onyeka Okoro, added, “Since I was born, I haven’t seen any kind of work being done on this road. This road has become so bad, especially during rainy season. The Government of Enugu State Government has really done very well by working on this road. The people of Ebonyi State will be happy with this development, as this road connects to Ebonyi State through Nkalagu”.

The 8.8 Km road was commissioned by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on Monday, 16th September 2019 amidst wild jubilation by locals.

Igbere TV recalls that the Enugu State Government led by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, had earlier made a campaign of intensive rural development in the state.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, inaugurated a Special Committee to recover the N5 trillion debts owed the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Igbere TV reports.

Personal Assistant to the President on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, disclosed this in a statement sighted by Igbere TV on his Twitter handle on Tuesday.

A statement subsequently issued by Osinbajo’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, also confirmed the development.

Members of the committee include Heads and Representatives of Agencies such as AMCON; the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU); the ICPC; Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC); and the Federal Ministry of Justice.

“One of the terms of reference is for the committee to prepare a report, giving us a sense of what the time lines will be”, the VP told the members.

“About 67 per cent of the outstanding N5tn debt is said to be owed by just 20 individuals/entities”, the statement partly read.

Politics / Buhari Issues Fresh Order To Police Service Commission by IgbereBlog: 2:26pm On Sep 17, 2019
President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has charged the Police Service Commission (PSC) to ensure that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) delivers on its responsibilities, Igbere TV reports.

A statement obtained by Igbere TV issued by Buhari’s Spokesman, Femi Adesina, said the President gave the charge while receiving the 2018 Annual Report of the Commission, on Tuesday, in Abuja.

The statement quoted President Buhari as saying, “the Commission has the most challenging responsibility of carrying out oversight responsibilities of the Police Force.

“The people that comprise this commission are mostly personally known to me and some of them have been through the mill as it were, therefore I expect them to put the Police in order. I personally believe that the Inspector General is doing his best …the Police are always in the frontline and unless we get the police working effectively, the security of this country will remain in doubt.”

He said that, by the mandate of the Commission, the task of appointment, promotion and disciplinary control of officers of the Nigerian Police Force, except the Inspector General, fall under it.

“Your assignment is enormous and calls for sacrifice and commitment especially now that almost every country is faced with severe internal security challenges. Nigeria is no exception,” President Buhari added.

The President praised the Commission for new ideas introduced into the workings of the Force.

“I am aware that you have put policies in place to reposition the Police Force in the areas of merit-driven promotion and prompt disciplinary actions. Government will require that you redouble your efforts and ensure that the Police Force receives the required assistance for optimum service delivery.”

He also called on the Commission to ensure harmonious working relationship with the Police Force.

“I wish to see close communication and understanding between you and the Nigeria Police. This is necessary for the overall efficiency and effectiveness in securing the country,” said the President.

Earlier in his address, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, the Chairman of the Commission who led other members to State House, had intimated the President that, in line with his (President’s) specific directives, the management was gradually putting together a productive Nigeria Police Force, which will attract the endorsement of all Nigerians and also receive the acclaim of the policemen themselves.

He also requested for the intervention of the President in overcoming the funding constrains of the Commission as well as securing better office accommodation.

Politics / Oyo Guber Poll: Governor Makinde Knows Fate Today As Tribunal Delivers Judgement by IgbereBlog: 6:03am On Sep 16, 2019
The Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Ibadan will today, deliver judgment in a petition seeking to upturn the election of Engr. Seyi Makinde as Governor of Oyo State, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Bayo Adelabu, are challenging the victory of Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 9, 2019 poll.

The APC and its candidate are alleging that Makinde of the PDP was not “elected by lawful votes”, insisting that the election was marred with “wide violence” and “massive rigging”.

But the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is urging the Tribunal to dismiss the petition for “lacking in substance” and being “grossly unmeritorious.”

INEC said that the petitioners erroneously put the burden of proof on the Commission, “whereas the responsibility of proof lies on the petitioners”.

The electoral umpire also claimed that majority of the 38 witnesses called by the petitioners confirmed that the March 9 guber poll conducted by it complied strictly with the Electoral Act.

The three-man panel of justices of the Governorship Election Tribunal which is expected to deliver judgment today, is led by Justice Sirajo Muhammed, as Chairman, reports Igbere TV.
