Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, on Friday, delivered a keynote address at the launch of the ‘Social Safety Nets Africa Report’ by the World Bank, Igbere TV reports. In her address, the Minister gave some contextual background on the importance of undertaking a continent-wide approach for social safety-nets, saying that “extreme poverty remains a pervasive phenomenon, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa”. Ahmed mentioned that in wake to the complexity of these issues, governments in these regions have initiated several programs to “halt the spread of poverty”. The Minister said that the Nigerian government has established several social intervention programmes such as the ERGP, the NSIP to “give life of dignity to all Nigerians especially the poor”. According to Minister Ahmed, from the preview of the report “a lot of interventions are occurring in Africa” and some trends worth noting are; (i) that Social registries are currently used in 23 countries and are being developed in 13 countries; (ii) there is an emphasis on strengthening coordination among programmes and investing in shared systems to reduce the duplication of efforts and cost inefficiencies is evolving; (iii) there is also a shift towards greater use of cash in social safety nets; (iv) there is an increasing number of programmes put emphasis on building the productive capacity and resilience of beneficiary households; (v) there is increased focus on promoting human capital development; and (vi) a growth in social safety nets in urban settings. Very interesting for us as a people is that the report highlighted the fact that social safety nets are widely used as short term responses to shocks. https://twitter.com/FinMinNigeria/status/1175069023291224064?s=19 http://igberetvnews.com/980219/minister-of-finance-zainab-addresses-world-bank-photos/ Lalasticlala, Mynd44, OAM4J

President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has charged the Police Service Commission (PSC) to ensure that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) delivers on its responsibilities, Igbere TV reports. A statement obtained by Igbere TV issued by Buhari’s Spokesman, Femi Adesina, said the President gave the charge while receiving the 2018 Annual Report of the Commission, on Tuesday, in Abuja. The statement quoted President Buhari as saying, “the Commission has the most challenging responsibility of carrying out oversight responsibilities of the Police Force. “The people that comprise this commission are mostly personally known to me and some of them have been through the mill as it were, therefore I expect them to put the Police in order. I personally believe that the Inspector General is doing his best …the Police are always in the frontline and unless we get the police working effectively, the security of this country will remain in doubt.” He said that, by the mandate of the Commission, the task of appointment, promotion and disciplinary control of officers of the Nigerian Police Force, except the Inspector General, fall under it. “Your assignment is enormous and calls for sacrifice and commitment especially now that almost every country is faced with severe internal security challenges. Nigeria is no exception,” President Buhari added. The President praised the Commission for new ideas introduced into the workings of the Force. “I am aware that you have put policies in place to reposition the Police Force in the areas of merit-driven promotion and prompt disciplinary actions. Government will require that you redouble your efforts and ensure that the Police Force receives the required assistance for optimum service delivery.” He also called on the Commission to ensure harmonious working relationship with the Police Force. “I wish to see close communication and understanding between you and the Nigeria Police. This is necessary for the overall efficiency and effectiveness in securing the country,” said the President. Earlier in his address, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, the Chairman of the Commission who led other members to State House, had intimated the President that, in line with his (President’s) specific directives, the management was gradually putting together a productive Nigeria Police Force, which will attract the endorsement of all Nigerians and also receive the acclaim of the policemen themselves. He also requested for the intervention of the President in overcoming the funding constrains of the Commission as well as securing better office accommodation. http://igberetvnews.com/999582/buhari-issues-fresh-order-police-service-commission/ Lalasticlala, Mynd44, OAM4J

The Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Ibadan will today, deliver judgment in a petition seeking to upturn the election of Engr. Seyi Makinde as Governor of Oyo State, Igbere TV reports. Igbere TV reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Bayo Adelabu, are challenging the victory of Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 9, 2019 poll. The APC and its candidate are alleging that Makinde of the PDP was not “elected by lawful votes”, insisting that the election was marred with “wide violence” and “massive rigging”. But the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is urging the Tribunal to dismiss the petition for “lacking in substance” and being “grossly unmeritorious.” INEC said that the petitioners erroneously put the burden of proof on the Commission, “whereas the responsibility of proof lies on the petitioners”. The electoral umpire also claimed that majority of the 38 witnesses called by the petitioners confirmed that the March 9 guber poll conducted by it complied strictly with the Electoral Act. The three-man panel of justices of the Governorship Election Tribunal which is expected to deliver judgment today, is led by Justice Sirajo Muhammed, as Chairman, reports Igbere TV. http://igberetvnews.com/994555/oyo-guber-gov-makinde-knows-fate-tomorrow-election-tribunal-sits/
