Cars gulped N570m — APC
We did nothing wrong — Zamfara govt
Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara is under intense fire for purchasing and distributing exotic cars to commissioners in his cabinet despite challenges of the new coronavirus pandemic in the country.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state is criticising the state government, describing the purchase of the cars as a misplacement of priority.
Matawalle had on Friday distributed cars to 19 commissioners in the state, the Director General Media, Public Enlightenment and Communication, Yusuf Idris, told Daily Trust.
Though he didn’t give the exact cost of the vehicles, the DG said the ones given to the executive council members were similar to those distributed to the state lawmakers.
However, the vice chairman of the APC in the state, Alhaji Sani Gwamna Mayanchi, faulted the expenditure, saying the money should have been channelled towards addressing some of the challenges facing the state.
“The state is grappling with coronavirus pandemic, we recorded some cases recently. Instead of buying fancy cars for commissioners, the money should have been channelled to easing the untold hardships and sufferings of the people of the state.
“This is not the right time for luxury and unnecessary spending of public funds. People are in serious hardship which was precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is high time the government considered giving palliatives to its people.
“Last year by this time, shortly before we vacated office, former governor Abdulaziz Yari’s administration had assisted about 45,000 less-privileged persons, most of them orphans, who can’t feed or clothe themselves,” he said.
The party alleged that the 19 cars cost the state government N570 million.
“Each of the cars cost close to N30 million. You can imagine the impact these funds would have on the less privileged in this state.
“Putting smiles on the faces of the less privileged should be the top priority of any serious government. This is because those in power should see themselves as servants to those they govern,” Mayanchi added.
Reacting, the DG Media said the official vehicles were purchased long before the coronavirus pandemic and were parked at the government house.
“This is what the APC government failed to do. They didn’t give a single official vehicle to their appointees for the eight years they governed the state. They have no moral justification to criticise our action,” Idris said.
“On the issue of palliatives, this administration has spent N1.2bn on palliative which is being distributed in this Ramadan. This is apart from feeding during Iftar in different centres across the state.
The feeding centres have been doubled and each local government has its own, so what are they talking about?
“We did the right thing; our administration can’t afford to stop giving them the vehicles after purchasing them. We did nothing against the law. The APC should give constructive criticisms not baseless accusations,” he said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/matawalle-under-fire-for-buying-exotic-cars-for-commissioners.html

Stephenomozzy: I think it is clearly stated in the article that there was an eligibility criteria for getting the grant. Everything is not always about favouring certain regions over the other.
We should ask these other states, why didn't they put their house in order to be eligible too. Why didn't they do their work. Must the whole state suffer as a result of incompetency of their leader? Remember the load by federal government will be paid by the entire Nigeria and will also affect states that didn't receive the grant. |

Kaduna State achieved the highest number of results (nine) and got the highest share with N3. 960 billion, while Katsina and Benue got the lowest amount of N540 million each as Federal Government disbursed the sum of N43,416,000,000.00 ($120.6 million) to 24 states.
The fund is through a performance-based grant under the World Bank-Assisted States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) Programme-for-Results.
SFTAS is wholly-financed with a loan of $750 million from the International Development Association (IDA), a member of the World Bank Group.

The lockdown did not and will not work in a country like Nigeria. You can't ask a hungry man to sit at home without proper provisions. The government copied the lockdown from developed countries but refused to copy the palliatives and support they gave to their citizens.
It is obvious the government is confused and I wouldn't blame them. |

The new guidelines on lockdown is the most sensible we can do for now. Gradual easing of lockdown, banning interstate travel, banning religious gatherings and imposing dusk to dawn curfew will help to reopen the cities better.
However wailers and haters will come out openly to condemn this great initiative without providing a better option.
I never like PMB and Federal government, but I must commend this idea.
God bless Nigeria. |
