Education / NBA Proposes To Make Law A 2nd Degree Course. Nairalanders, what Do You Think??? by Ihechiopara: 11:42am On Jan 11, 2017
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has proposed to make the study of law a second-degree course in Nigerian Universities.

In a statement signed by the NBA secretary, Isiaka Olagunju, the development is to raise the bar for Nigerian lawyers and to find a lasting solution to the seemingly low standard of legal profession in the country.

To this effect, a 23-man committee has been inaugurated by the NBA president, Abubakar Mahmud, SAN and chaired by Chief Anthony Idigbe, SAN, while Dr Aminu Gamawa is the secretary.

He noted that the idea is still an agenda for the committee, he said the committee would look at the current size of the legal profession and its exponential growth in recent years in relation to the needs of the Nigerian economy. Also the committee will consider the desirability of candidates seeking admission to the law faculties in Nigeria to possess a degree in another discipline as a condition for admission.

The agenda reads in part “Review the current regulatory objectives and the regulatory architecture of the legal profession and advise on its suitability to meet the current requirements for a robust, responsive and independent modern legal profession in Nigeria.’’

He added that the Nigerian Bar Association has repeatedly expressed concerns in the falling standard of legal education and legal practice, he described it as a disturbing phenomenon that must be addressed urgently and adequately.

That's what they think, nairalanders, what do you think

Celebrities / 5 Fashion Trends We Do Not Want To See In 2017. by Ihechiopara: 3:00pm On Dec 23, 2016
It was a a year of fashion I must say, especially for students who get involved with every trend that comes their way. New trends showed forth month after month. Some we liked, some definitely getting a no from us.

As part of sharing in the joy of ending the year, we decided to compile a list of five fashion trends we do not want to see in 2017.

VINTAGE SHIRTS

We understand the whole ‘old-school’ thing and going back ‘into the 80s’, but boy, we have rocked enough of it. Everywhere we went, we saw it, almost becoming a uniform for those who actually couldn’t rock it in the 80s: the younger ones. When we say everywhere, we mean everywhere- on TV, on the street, in social gatherings, in church, on Instagram, some even converted it to their night-wears. You know we don’t tell lies.

CROPPED TOPS

Sisters, enough of the abdomen! It became sadder when some girls a little over weight wore it carelessly. You didn’t notice? Cropped-tops easily make you look slutty. Yes yes yes, we are satisfied with the ones we have seen. the pictures you have taken should suffice. We honestly do not want more of it in 2017.

COLOURED HAIR

How this pervaded the place, we do not understand. All of a sudden, there was a rainbow-like stuff on the head. From funny looking wool to orange and yellow attachment. OR when the boys decided to male their hair gold. It left us amazed how this infiltrated the place. We sincerely hope you had fun with the experiment you carried out on your head because we wouldn’t be giving any nice complement in 2017.

CRAZY JEAN

We beg in the name of anything you succumb to, let this trend just remain in 2016. It was nearly impossible to look responsible wearing this. We must admit, a few people rocked the crazy jean well but that is what you would like to call the one in a million. We would appreciate if we do not see you feeling fly on this in 2017.

DENIM ON DENIM

Never did a fashion rule allow denim on denim, but it surprises me how we were so comfortable on it. So 2016 was an amazing year, it did not stop you from being happy wearing the ”Denim on Denim” . Please and please again, do not over-wear your welcome, let this trend not step a toe into 2017.

Education / Best Productivity Hacks Successful People Use. by Ihechiopara: 8:08pm On Oct 08, 2016
We are living in the greatest time period ever in history. There is almost nothing in this world that is not available to us, if we are willing to put in the hours to research and learn. That’s all that’s between us and what we want in life.

In the same token, because of all the technology in this modern age, we are also face to face, daily, with more distractions than our ancestors ever had.

Try these productivity hacks to leverage technology to the fullest, so we can optimize our life and reach maximum effectiveness

Social Media
How much time do you spend on social media every day? Be honest.

Social media is another technological advancement that is absolutely fantastic for so many reasons. You can do things like connecting with family and friends out of town, share life experiences as they happen, communicate with friends you’ve been out of touch with and more.

My question to you though is how many of your productive hours is it stealing from you every day? Time is the one thing in this life that we can never get back. If you were to look back on your life 30-40 years from now, do you think you’d say “Man, I wish I spent more time on Facebook.” No, I didn’t think so.

Set aside 30-45 minutes at night to go through your favorite social media accounts and do what you’d like, but I challenge you to stop the mindless scrolling during the day just because you’re bored. We all do it.

Every once in awhile I like to get into this mode of taking a break from ALL social media platforms. It’s amazing how clear I feel during these “breaks.”

The Pomodoro Technique
This is a simple, yet extremely powerful technique of breaking your work down into short intervals of 25 minutes and setting a timer. Then, when your 25 minute Pomodoro is done, you take a 5-minute break. Many people (myself included), find that when they are working off of a timer, it increases your output and productivity because you are trying to “beat the clock.”

I was skeptical when I first came across this, but it works very well. There are many free Pomodoro timers that you can access online as well as apps on your smartphone. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

Your “One Thing.”
This is a popular new trend that was spiked by Gary Keller in his book “The One Thing”. This book stresses that although there any many tasks that each one of us is responsible for during the day, there is ultimately one thing that is the most important. Keller encourages readers that by focusing on their “one thing” and giving that all of their attention until it’s done, their productivity will soar.

This is another simple concept that is easy to discard how powerful it is until you try it.

Before going to sleep at night, plan out your day tomorrow like your normally would except identify clearly your one thing. What is the one thing that you can do or work on that would bring you the most results and bring you closer to where you want to be?

Meditation or Quiet Time
Because of all the stresses of the modern world, we tend to neglect ourselves and our own physical and mental well-being. When our ancestors were growing up, they didn’t have phones ringing, email alerts going off, Facebook messages, Twitter alerts, Snapchats or any of the other distractions that we have today. As much as we all love our phones and social accounts, we must give ourselves a break as well.

Take at least 5-10 minutes out of your day, every day, to meditate or have a little quiet time and allow your mind some time to relax and shut off. Take this time and spend it in the way that best aligns with you.

There are some great apps that can help with meditation. You can even use these for guided meditations. Maybe you prefer to sit outside quietly with a cup of coffee in silence or go for a walk in nature? It doesn’t matter which you choose. The important thing is that you take the time to “re-charge.” You will be at least twice as productive because of it.

Education / A Message To Every Disappointed Admission Seeker. by Ihechiopara: 1:13am On Oct 04, 2016
Hey guys. In lieu of this recent admission issue,I just have a few words to say. I won't call them words of encouragement, just a little enlightenment.

You see, there's something Socrates said. "Man,know thyself. The unexamined life is not worth living". There is an incessant need to search within ourselves to discover what we truly want, who we truly want to be. Why? Because whether or not you make it,you end up being 100% responsible for your actions. Why not choose to be happy? To be sucessful?, instead of floundering and wallowing away in choices that would make you unhappy in the long run. Your life, your future, your career starts now. Its really not about what you study or where you are. Thing is,as long as you can put your thinking faculty to good use,you can be whoever you want to be. Who you think you are and what you think your capabilities are, is all a matter of your mindset. If you believe you can do something then you will do it. Those aren't just words. Its reality

There are four steps in making something happen. You have the idea, you develop the ability, you put into action and it becomes a reality.

If you haven't gotten the admission yet or you didn't get the course you want, don't let that deter you. Learning is not all about the books,it's about how you can apply the books. No matter where you are,as long as you are able to learn how to apply yourself to what you are doing and broaden your horizon, you will make it. Don't stick to your everyday learning, pick up a skill, get involved in activities, go for trainings. Just do something! Do that thing you know, that something that will help you gain an edge over others. The fact that you didn't get what you wanted should never stop you from being who you want to be.

Albert Einstein said "I have no exceptional talents other than a passionate curiousity". You don't always have to be better than others or even in the same level with them. No,you just have to learn to upgrade what life throws at you to a level you wish it to be. Its never the course, its the individual that makes it known worldwide.

You! Yes..I'm talking to you. You have that ability, the ingenuity to twirl the world around in your favor. Stop hiding. Stop being lazy. Don't wait for things to happen. Make them happen.

You have that something in you that makes you exceptional. Never give up on yourself. Develop the you that the world would be crazy about. You have creativity in you,you have innovation. Apply that to your everyday life and believe me,as they say,the sky will only be a starting point

"There'll always be a chance that you could hit the wrong note

Everybody could laugh and make you think you won't grow

You never give up
Its not the end of the world
You live and you learn
Even when think that times get hard
Its temporarily hard
All you gotta do is make that call
I'll be there
Don't be scared
You don't have to lose it

Remember the music"-Jennifer Hudson

Looking at those lyrics,we can pick a few lines. You'll make mistakes, yes but you don't give up. You never give up,no matter how hard things get for you. Remember your purpose and your goal in life. When you fall, get back up. Everyone has a story to tell, don't think yours is the worst. Where others have failed, pray to succeed. Even when you fail, try again.

Health / Seven Things You Need To Learn Early. by Ihechiopara: 6:22am On Sep 02, 2016
We should never regret too much in our lives. However, there comes a time when we realise there are things that, if we had known them earlier, could have benefited us a lot in our younger years. Maybe we only come to these realisations through personal growth and experience, but sometimes we can go through life not being fully aware of situations until we hit a crisis point that leads us to question whether we truly did or cherished things to the best of our ability.

How often have you thought to yourself I wish I’d known this when I was younger? There’s an overwhelming feeling that if your younger self had just been more enlightened or aware, then you could have dealt with emotions and situations more readily or just moved forward with a more knowledgeable mindset and perspective on life.

With this in mind, here are 7 important life lessons that will change your perspective and mindset to enhance your experience of life for the better.

1. Be Present In The Here And Now
We spend so much time rehashing the past or planning for the future that we forget to experience the present moment. The present moment is what is happening to you right now. Happiness can only exist in the present moment ‒ the past has gone and the future hasn’t come yet so the present moment is all we have.

Our minds have a habit of running at a hundred miles an hour and this means we are rarely just being in the here and now. Try stopping and looking around you, see what is happening right now, be mindful of where you are right in this moment, or simply be aware of your breathing. Once you do this, your mind will start to open up and appreciate what you have right now and you will even start to feel like time is no longer slipping away.

2. Don’t Rule Your Life By What You Think You Should Or Shouldn’t Do
Society, or our family’s expectations tend to make us think there are things we should do ― I should go to university and get that degree or I shouldn’t pursue my dreams because I won’t make the same money as I would working in this dead-end office job. We all have these niggling ‘shoulds’ and ‘shouldn’ts’ circling our minds, but when we make these statements, who exactly are we making these statements to? Who exactly are we trying to get permission from? And why is this acceptable? Living your life the way you want to is the only way to be happy. Stop limiting yourself because of other people’s expectations. It’s your life and no one else’s.

3. Don’t Make Things Bigger Than They Are
Our minds can work against us and through mindsets we develop and fears that take over. We can often make problems much bigger than they actually are. It’s all about perspective. How many times have you thought something was a huge deal but a day, week, or month down the line you don’t even think about it anymore? That’s because your mind likes to focus and blow-up worries and problems that aren’t actually problems.

Next time it happens just take a moment to ask yourself: realistically, will I still be thinking about this tomorrow, next week, next year etc.?Most of the time the answer will be “NO” so eliminate all the unnecessary worry you put yourself through.

4.Face Your Fears More.
We all have fears ― some are justified and some are not ― but to grow and really get as much out of life as you can, you need to face your fears more often. Remember that many of your fears are only a product of your mind; they don’t actually exist. When you start to realise this, doing things you find intimidating and scary will actually become easier. The feeling you’ll get from facing your fears head on will be the best and most rewarding feeling you will ever have and, 100% guaranteed, it will always never feel as scary as your mind thought it was going to be.

5. Slowly But Surely Wins The Race
When we’re younger, we tend to aim high and want everything quickly. When we set ourselves goals, we can give up easily when we don’t get the results immediately. Our modern world has conditioned us to expect and obtain anything in a blink of an eye which has led us to believe this can be the same for our dreams, goals, and ambitions.

The secret to success is small steps for big changes. Our goals are there to help us achieve and grow and we can’t do this if things happen quickly with no area for learning or getting a sense of achievement from it. Remember to set yourself small attainable goals that will help towards your dreams and know you are on the right path no matter how long it will take.

6. Stop Assuming What Other People Are Thinking
We can often make huge assumptions about what others are thinking whether they are judging you for something or thinking badly about an opinion you had. The bottom line is the world doesn’t revolve around you. Everyone around you is dealing with their own problems, worries, and insecurities and the chances are, they aren’t paying as much attention to you as you may think. So stop caring and, even worse, assuming what others are thinking. You wouldn’t want anyone to assume what you’re thinking so why do it to others?

7. Appreciate Everything In Your Life
One of the most important life lessons is appreciation. The older we get, the more we appreciate the things in our life including people, experiences, lessons we’ve learnt, and even our possessions. Establishing this habit early on the better, because gratitude and appreciation is the true key to happiness. The sooner you can be enlightened to this and integrate this into your everyday life, the more you’ll be able to live in the present moment and be thankful for what makes your life a good one―no matter how small the thing is you’re appreciating.

So, whether it’s the shower you get to take every morning, the nature around you, your pet, that one person who you can talk to about anything, the food in your refrigerator―appreciate it all and realise the abundance that’s really present in your life. This will transcend into the rest of your life and establish the positive mindset needed to live a happy and healthy life; your older self will thank you for it!

Celebrities / How Smart People Deal With People They Don’t Like by Ihechiopara: 1:11pm On Jul 28, 2016
In a perfect world, each person we interact with would be nice, kind, considerate, mindful, generous, and more. They would get our jokes and we would get theirs. We would all thrive in a convivial atmosphere where no one was ever cross, upset, or maligned.

However, we don’t live in a perfect world. Some people drive us crazy, and we (admittedly) drive a few mad as well. Those we dislike are inconsiderate, rushed, malign our character, question our motives, or just don’t get our jokes at all — but expect us to laugh at all theirs.

You might wonder whether it is possible to be fair to someone who ruffles you all the time, or someone you’d rather avoid eating lunch with. You might wonder if you should learn to like every person you meet.

According to Robert Sutton (a professor of management science at Stanford University), it’s neither possible — nor even ideal — to build a team comprised entirely of people you’d invite to a backyard barbecue.

That’s why smart people make the most out of people they don’t like. Here’s how they do it.

1. They accept that they are not going to like everyone.
Sometimes we get caught in the trap of thinking that we are nice people. We think that we are going to like everyone we interact with — even when that’s not going to happen. It’s inevitable you will encounter difficult people who oppose what you think. Smart people know this. They also recognize that conflicts or disagreements are a result of differences in values.

That person you don’t like is not intrinsically a bad human. The reason you don’t get along is because you have different values, and that difference creates judgment. Once you accept that not everyone will like you, and you won’t like everyone because of a difference in values, the realization can take the emotion out of the situation. That may even result in getting along better by agreeing to disagree.

2. They bear with (not ignore or dismiss) those they don’t like.
Sure, you may cringe at his constant criticism, grit your teeth at her lousy jokes, or shake your head at the way he hovers around her all the time, but feeling less than affectionate to someone might not be the worst thing. “From a performance standpoint, liking the people you manage too much is a bigger problem than liking them too little,” says Sutton.

“You need people who have different points of view and aren’t afraid to argue,” Sutton adds. “They are the kind of people who stop the organization from doing stupid things.” It may not be easy, but bear with them. It is often those who challenge or provoke us that prompt us to new insights and help propel the group to success. Remember, you are not perfect either, yet people still tolerate you.

3. They treat those they don’t like with civility.
Whatever your feelings are for someone, that person will be highly attuned to your attitude and behavior, and will likely reflect it back to you. If you are rude to them, they will likely throw away all decorum and be rude to you too. The onus; therefore, is on you to remain fair, impartial, and composed.

“Cultivating a diplomatic poker face is important. You need to be able to come across as professional and positive,” says Ben Dattner, an organizational psychologist and author of The Blame Game. This way you won’t stoop to their level or be sucked into acting the way they do.

4. They check their own expectations.
It’s not uncommon for people to have unrealistic expectations about others. We may expect others to act exactly as we would, or say the things that we might say in a certain situation. However, that’s not realistic. “People have ingrained personality traits that are going to largely determine how they react,” says Alan A. Cavaiola, PhD (psychology professor at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey). “Expecting others to do as you would do is setting yourself up for disappointment and frustration.”

If a person causes you to feel exactly the same way every time, adjust your expectations appropriately. This way you’ll be psychologically prepared and their behavior will not catch you by surprise. Smart people do this all the time. They’re not always surprised by a dis-likable person’s behavior.

5. They turn inwards and focus on themselves.
No matter what you try, some people can still really get under our skin. It’s important that you learn how to handle your frustration when dealing with someone who annoys you. Instead of thinking about how irritating that person is, focus on why you are reacting the way you are. Sometimes what we don’t like in others is frequently what we don’t like in ourselves. Besides, they didn’t create the button, they’re only pushing it.

Pinpoint the triggers that might be complicating your feelings. You may then be able to anticipate, soften, or even alter your reaction. Remember: it’s easier to change your perceptions, attitude, and behavior than to ask someone to be a different kind of person.

6. They pause and take a deep breath.
Some personality characteristics may always set you off, says Kathleen Bartle (a California-based conflict consultant). Maybe it’s the colleague who regularly misses deadlines, or the guy who tells off-color jokes. Take a look at what sets you off and who’s pushing your buttons. That way, Bartle says, you can prepare for when it happens again.

According to her, “If you can pause and get a grip on your adrenaline pump and go to the intellectual part of your brain, you’ll be better able to have a conversation and to skip over the judgment.” A deep breath and one big step back can also help to calm you down and protect you from overreaction, thereby allowing you to proceed with a slightly more open mind and heart.

7. They voice their own needs.
If certain people constantly tick you off, calmly let them know that their manner of behavior or communication style is a problem for you. Avoid accusatory language and instead try the “When you . . . I feel . . .” formula. For example, Cacaiola advises you to tell that person, “When you cut me off in meetings, I feel like you don’t value my contributions.” Then, take a moment and wait for their response.

You may find that the other person didn’t realize you weren’t finished speaking, or your colleague was so excited about your idea that she enthusiastically jumped into the conversation.

8. They allow space between them.
If all else fails, smart people allow space between themselves and those they don’t like. Excuse yourself and go on your way. If at work, move to another room or sit at the other end of the conference table. With a bit of distance, perspective, and empathy, you may be able to come back and interact both with those people you like and those you don’t like as if unfazed.

Of course, everything would be easier if we could wish people we don’t like away. Too bad we all know that’s not how life works.

Education / Brain Exercise. by Ihechiopara: 2:01am On Jul 15, 2016
It is no secret that the best way to prevent illnesses of the mind is to exercise the brain. Keeping your mind active has been proven to decrease your chances of developing dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Here are some great brain training exercises to keep your mind in top shape.

Never stop learning
Simply learning new things is one of the best possible brain training exercises you can do. The great news is, there are so many possible ways of doing it. One way is to take classes online through websites like Coursera.org or Edx.org, where you can take courses from the top universities for free. They have so many topics to study that the possibilities seem endless.
You could also learn a new hobby through websites like Instructables.com, which offers complete do-it-yourself hobby instructions. Or perhaps you would like to learn a new language. Learning another language activates areas of the brain that will improve your command of your native tongue, as well. There are wonderful language programs available through RosettaStone.com and Duolingo.com which offer many lessons to choose from.

Read something every day
The act of reading itself is a wonderful brain exercise. Make a point to read something every day. It could be a newspaper, book, blog or magazine, but the more informative it is, the more of a workout it will be for your thinking cap. If you are short on time, you could read the dictionary – try picking five words to learn about and rehearse in your mind.

Play games
The act of solving problems and figuring out puzzles is excellent for keeping your brain in shape. Whether you’re a crossword addict or Sudoku fan, playing puzzles will help you to stay sharp. Solving math equations, figuring out word puzzles, and even just a quick game of Bubble Witch on your smartphone will do wonders for your thinking processes.

Socialize
BConversing with others on topics of common interest is a great workout. Talking about in-depth topics like headline news and political interests exercises your ability to pay attention and focus. There are also many interest groups for like-minded individuals who enjoy the same hobbies or share the same religious beliefs.

Exercise your body
When your body is healthy, it keeps your mind healthy as well. Exercising your body affects your vitality, mood and alertness. Exercise stimulates the nervous system and causes you to perform at a higher level of functionality.

According to a study by the University of Pittsburgh published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, it was proven that aerobic exercises stimulated the growth of new stem cells in humans. This discovery just goes to show that your brain definitely benefits along with your body from some good old fashioned exercise.
What have you done to exercise your brain today?

Education / How Water Enhances Academic Performances. by Ihechiopara: 1:39am On Jul 15, 2016
Students who take water into the examination hall may improve their grades, a study of 447 people found.

Controlling for ability from previous coursework results, researchers found those with water scored an average of 5% higher than those without.

The study, from the universities of East London and Westminster, also noted that older students were more likely to bring in water to exam halls.

It says the findings have implications for exam policies on access to drinks.

The researchers observed 447 psychology students at the University of East London - 71 were in their foundation year, 225 were first-years and 151 were in their second year.

Just 25% of the 447 students entered the exam hall with a bottle of water.

Of these, the more mature students (those in their second year of degree study) were more likely to bring in water - 31% did so compared with 21% of foundation year and first-year students.

After taking students' academic ability into account, by examining coursework grades, the researchers found foundation students who drank water could expect to see grades improved by up to 10%.

This improvement was 5% for first-year students and 2% for second years.

Across the cohort, the improvement in marks was 4.8% for water-drinking exam candidates.

The research paper said information about the importance of staying hydrated during exams should be targeted at younger students in particular.
Anxiety

Dr Chris Pawson, from the University of East London, said consuming water may have a physiological effect on thinking functions that lead to improved exam performance.

Water consumption may also alleviate anxiety, which is known to have a negative effect on exam performance, said Dr Pawson.

"Future research is needed to tease apart these explanations, but whatever the explanation it is clear that students should endeavour to stay hydrated with water during exams," he said.

Dr Mark Gardner, from the University of Westminster, told the BBC: "We find the results exciting in that they translate findings from the laboratory to real world settings like this.

"Also, supplementing with water is a really cheap way students and educators can help get better results.

"There are also implications for policy makers in terms of the availability of water on campuses."
