Education / How To Enjoy The Course You Hate. by Ihechiopara: 3:34am On Jul 07, 2016
Lots of us have to do subjects we don’t like, and find difficult, to a high level – some as far as university and after. And lots of students deploy the same avoidance tactics as I did, ignoring the problem, and hoping some freak Martian landing on exam day might mean it never comes back to haunt them. However, the best possible thing you can do with a nightmare subject is to tackle it early – not only will the leisure of time improve your chances of being able to catch up, and come out with a grade you can be proud of, but, perhaps more importantly, getting up to scratch will boost your confidence hugely, and make you feel an awful lot better about how school is going.
Highlighted below are some ways or actions that can be taken to get better:

Work out what the problem is
Working out what this problem is, moreover, is the first step to getting on top of things. In general, this is usually one of a few things:
– Not understanding concepts or ideas
– Struggling to learn large swathes of information
– Not being able to apply knowledge in an exam or coursework context
It may be that you struggle with more than one of these problems in your least favorite subjects. It may even be that you struggle with all three, in different topics respectively. But once you figure out what the problem is, or what the problems are, you can stop feeling hopeless and doomed to failure, stop trotting out phrases like ‘I’m just rubbish at Physics’, and start to address it.

Talk to your teacher
Getting your teacher’s opinion on your progress is another good starting-point: they’ll be able to tell you if there’s anything specific you need to improve on. You’ll be surprised each time you ask for the opinion of a university tutor on your work, how clearly they can see things you’d never have thought of, and how helpful their thoughts are. Your teacher might be able to give you extra work, or suggest something you can do, a book you can read, or a website you can visit in your own time. They might even tell you to stop worrying, get out of their office and go and enjoy your youth!

IDEAS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Understanding concepts
i) Explain it to someone else. Reading and listening are passive, and it’s all-too-easy to get distracted or give up when you come across something tough. Teaching something, on the other hand, is active – it forces you to process information, and regurgitate it in words you think someone else will understand. So pick a difficult concept, and try and explain it to someone who does understand it. Get them to interrupt you if you go wrong – but leave you to figure out why and correct yourself.

ii) Go back to basics. It’s unbelievably boring and time-consuming, but there is a certain satisfaction in sitting down with a text book, beginning with the very simplest information at the beginning of a chapter, and making sure you understand each step, and can do each exercise, until you get the hardest stuff. This could help you improve a lot

iii) Consult the syllabus. Teachers and text books try to make things interesting and relevant – and sometimes clarity is sacrificed in their efforts to explain. Sometimes, especially if you find something difficult, you don’t want or need to know how it can be applied, or another topic that it links to – you just want to know the very basics, the bare minimum, exactly what you need to know to get you through a test. Consult the syllabus for just this information. Often, you’ll find things are a lot simpler than you might initially think.

Learning Information
In subjects like History, Biology, or languages, there is often a huge amount of information to be remembered and reproduced. Success in these subjects requires lots of mundane leg-work learning lists of verbs, the names of niche molecules or types of fungus, or names and dates. Learn to recite huge chunks of Ciceronian speeches. Most people don’t learn well from lists on pages, so try presenting this information in fun and creative ways (I maintain that learning dates can be fun!) to get it into your brain.

i) Diagrams, pictures and posters. Get your felt tips out! If you’re the sort of person that imagines information in colours, or places (or you just like a doodle) you can have fun making posters or diagrams, and perhaps even display them round your room, living room or loo to reinforce the information frequently.

ii) Record yourself and listen. Use your phone to record yourself talking through the information you need to learn, or simply reading out your notes, and listen to it while you do something mindless like go for a walk or lie in bed. There is something about the cringing horror of listening to your own voice (am I really that high-pitched?! Is that my accent?) that makes things stick fast in your brain.

iii) Recite. It’s very Victorian, but I actually like learning to recite long lists of Latin verb endings, or lines of poetry to reproduce in exams. Of course, this will vary from person to person, but I find that once I’ve learned something by reciting it over and over, it’ll stick in my head indefinitely – I can still remember, word-perfect, the poems I learned for IB English exams six years ago! Try it out and see if it works for you.

iv) Link information to actions. Some people remember better if their memorising is accompanied by action – pacing while learning lines for a play, for example. Others learn spatially: doing little actions to remember the definitions of words, or associating different dates with particular places in their heads.

Nailing exams
This is a problem students face just as much in essay subjects like Economics or History: in making sure you cover everything, it’s all-too-easy to lose marks because you can’t translate your knowledge to answering the question on the paper. There’s a simple answer to this, and it is also pretty obvious: practise! Use exam questions the whole way through your high school career, and always think about how you’d organise your knowledge into an essay in subjects where it’s relevant. Using past papers will additionally help you get used to the format of exam papers, the way questions are phrased, and the sorts of questions that come up a lot. What’s more, it will fill you with confidence when entering your exams to know what to expect.

Things take time
Getting better at subjects you hate or find difficult won’t happen overnight because you get the hang of a concept, make a useful poster or do really well on a past paper. These things take time, and lots of it: it’ll be worth it in the end, when it all starts to feel easier, or you come out with a grade you’re happy with, but do be prepared to dedicate a lot of energy to getting better at something. Start as early as possible (N.B. take it from me – 6 weeks before your exams is NOT early enough!), and make it a regular, scheduled extra thing: you might dedicate two hours, each week, on a Saturday morning; or 45 minutes three evenings a week after school. Don’t plan to do so much that you can’t stick to it: it’s far more important to do a little bit, and often, than to have one whole enthusiastic, productive day that never happens again.

Celebrities / Genevieve Owes Nobody. The True Story. by Ihechiopara: 5:45pm On Jun 13, 2016
Why do these attention seekers find joy in using our collected and ever beautiful Genevieve?

Some months back it was one silly blogger, Yemisi or whatever her name saying Genevieve was very rude to her and blah (chai, we gave her what she wanted, publicity: she got on Linda Ikeji's blog)

This slowpoke,Kingsley Ejikeme, see the way he looks (hungry poof). Why in heaven and earth will
Genevieve who has a successful clothing line buy a cloth from a boutique with a sales boy looking like that? (I won't lie I had to check out his Instagram page... so much photos with pant. SMH)

Who noticed how he mentioned Linda Ikeji should get involved. Lmao!!!

I'm so glad Genevieve is too busy growing to pay attention.

Nairalanders what do you think?

Education / Ocean Awareness Student Contest 2016 by Ihechiopara: 12:50am On Apr 02, 2016
We invite middle and high school students from around the world participate in the 2016 Ocean Awareness Student Contest! The theme is Making Meaning out of Ocean Pollution, and it challenges you to research, explore, interpret, and say something meaningful about the connections between human activities and the health of our oceans.

This year, we challenge you to focus on ONE type of ocean pollution and “make meaning” of it through art, poetry, prose, or film. We would encourage you to connect it with your own life, your own local community, or something else that is personally meaningful to you, but what’s most important is to pick a topic that inspires and motivates you

This is an interdisciplinary contest that weaves together ocean awareness, creativity, and advocacy. Advocacy means taking a stand for something you believe in. It requires problem-solving skills, assertiveness, and most of all, knowing when to call the world to action.

While learning from science, history, and personal experience will inform your entry, there is no “right” way to do meaningful advocacy. Use your creativity to make art, poetry, prose, or films that inspire and empower a new generation of ocean stewardship!

Computers / 10 Fantastic Ways To Increase The Life Of Your Smartphone. by Ihechiopara: 8:26am On Mar 03, 2016
The average cost of an iPhone has climbed to a staggering $687, and even the most affordable Android devices come with a median price tag of $254. Instead of wasting your money by upgrading annually or paying a monthly rental fee, it is wise to pay close attention to the best practices for extending the life of your smartphone. Fortunately, there are several ways to do this, and utilizing the following tips will help you get more bang for your buck.
1. Remove unnecessary apps and photos.

Almost every smartphone user has experienced serious lag times that make it frustrating to use their mobile device. In the vast majority of cases, this happens because the storage and RAM capabilities of the smartphone are being maxed out. This can make the phone much less responsive, and it often convinces people to upgrade before they truly need to. To avoid this unnecessary expense, make sure that you regularly remove any apps, photos, documents or text messages that you do not actually need.
2. Use a tempered glass screen protector.

A broken screen can make your phone next to impossible to use, and it may end up leading to further damages. Instead of paying approximately $100to replace your screen, you should take steps to protect this integral smartphone component. A tempered glass screen protector is a good investment that will dramatically reduce your risk of ending up with a smashed screen. However, if your screen gets cracked before you take preventative action, make sure that you look into a repair instead of buying a new phone.
3. Invest in a sturdy case.

Now that your screen is protected, it is time to be proactive with the rest of your smartphone’s components. No case is going to prevent every possible type of damage that can render a phone unusable, but purchasing something very sturdy will give you the best odds of steering clear of an expensive accident. This is especially important for people who tend to frequently drop their smartphone. As an added bonus, a sturdy case will add an extra layer of protection to the phone’s screen.
4. Avoid software updates after two generations.

Phone manufacturers only provide software support for approximately two generations. This is the reason that the latest iOS updates are only compatible with the 4S and later models. In some cases, you will have the ability to update even if your device is older, but it is very likely that doing so will cause a lot of performance issues.

This may be because it is difficult to create stable updates that will work across a wide variety of devices, but most people believe that the reality is more sinister. After all, why would Apple want to keep making updates available for older phones when they can simply push consumers into making a new purchase every couple of years? Either way, you can extend the life of your smartphone by avoiding updates after two new generations have been released.
5. Power down regularly.

You would never leave your laptop running for several weeks at a time, yet most of you have not turned your smartphone off in months. Keep in mind that your phone is very similar to a computer in many ways. Simply allowing your phone to power down for a few minutes at least once a week will help it run more efficiently, and this will also extend its useful life.
6. Keep the battery in good shape with best charging practices.

You do not need to worry about overcharging your battery by leaving it hooked up for an extended period of time. However, even though that myth is incorrect, there are some things you probably do daily that are damaging the phone’s battery and reducing its overall lifespan.

The single most important thing you can do to get the most out of your smartphone is to put it on the charger when it reaches a battery life of 75 percent. Waiting until the battery life drops to 25 percent will dramatically reduce its ability to receive and hold a charge. In fact, if you always charge your phone at 25 percent, the battery will only work to its full potential for 500 charges. On the other hand, opting to use the charger at 75 percent will give you up to 2,500 fully powered charges.

It is also important to note that draining your battery all the way and then charging it back to 100 percent is a bad idea. Your phone will last a lot longer if you charge it for a few minutes off and on throughout the day.
7. Don’t exercise with your smartphone in your pocket.

There are numerous apps available for your smartphone that can help you work out, but it may not be in your best interests to use them. This is due to the fact that some iPhone users have experienced water damage issues as a result of sweating while their phone was in their pocket or secured to their arm. This problem becomes exacerbated by Apple’s unwillingness to cover even minimal moisture damage under their warranty program. When you consider how expensive an iPhone is, it does not make sense to take the risk of harming it with sweat.
8. Secure your smartphone while driving.

Your phone’s built-in navigation system makes it very useful during a road trip, but be careful where you place this precious device. Unless the smartphone is properly secured at all times, you are running the risk of it being thrown through the vehicle during an accident. This can easily damage the sensitive electronics within the phone. Unfortunately, this type of issue is not likely to be covered by your warranty.
9. Avoid viruses and malware.

Although it is not very common for a smartphone to become infected with a virus or malware, you should still take precautions to protect your investment. Viruses come from malicious apps, so do not download anything that seems suspicious. If your phone starts acting oddly after a new app has been installed, you can check the app’s data usage to determine if it may be sending out information to a third-party. It is also possible for virus-laden apps to be installed without your permission if you have a jailbroken device. Be aware that the only way to get rid of a virus is by resetting your iPhone or taking your Android into safe mode to delete the offending app.
10. Take advantage of cloud storage.

Cloud storage is one of the best ways to ensure that your phone never becomes clogged with too much data. This will enable you to run a tight, lean device, and it will minimize the risk of data loss if something does go wrong. Take advantage of any free cloud storage that comes with your smartphone and perform backups on a regular basis to receive the best results.

Now that you know how to get the most out of your smartphone, you can stop wasting money on annual or biennial upgrades. You can even go one step further by looking at numerous other ways to reduce your expenses. Always remember that the money choices you make today could have a huge impact on the rest of your life, including retirement.
