Despite significant improvements in Nigeria's foreign exchange market fundamentals, the naira continues to struggle, trading at N1,600/$ in the black market as of Wednesday morning. This trend persists even as the U.S. dollar index hovers near a seven-month low.

Naira short sellers remain undeterred, even in the face of the Federal Government's recent issuance of domestic dollar bonds aimed at bolstering liquidity in the country’s FX market.

According to data from the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Fixing (NAFEX), the naira remained relatively stable, closing at N1,579.74/$.

The naira's ongoing depreciation comes despite positive market signals, such as a 130% year-on-year increase in diaspora remittances, which reached $553 million in July 2024, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

This influx of foreign currency was expected to alleviate some pressure on the naira.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has approved a substantial financial package worth N700 billion to facilitate the proposed merger between Unity Bank Plc and Providus Bank Limited.

This significant move by the apex bank aims to bolster the stability of Nigeria’s financial system and ensure the operational viability of the merged entity.

In an official letter addressed to the Managing Director of Unity Bank, the CBN detailed the terms and structure of the financial accommodation. The package consists of a 20-year term loan specifically designed to support the post-merger stability of the new financial institution.

This bailout is notable as it marks the first financial assistance extended to a commercial bank under the leadership of the new CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso.

It comes in the wake of the liquidation of Heritage Bank, which had led many to believe that the apex bank might refrain from further bailouts for struggling banks.

Atletico Madrid have reached a comprehensive agreement to sign Argentine forward Julian Alvarez from reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

The English club is set to receive a club-record transfer fee of £82 million, including add-ons (€95 million/$104 million), in exchange for Alvarez, pending the 24-year-old finalizing personal terms with Atletico.

The negotiations between the two clubs, which began on Monday, have now culminated in a mutual agreement.

Atletico Madrid will now enter discussions with Alvarez regarding personal terms before the transfer is officially completed. Reports indicate that Alvarez is keen to embrace a new challenge away from Manchester City.

Alvarez, a World Cup-winning attacker, joined Manchester City from River Plate in January 2022 for a modest fee of €17 million (£14 million). He subsequently signed a new contract last year, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2028.
