Do I like the comments, No, do I understand why he made them in this context, yes.

Look for yourself and see if he made good decisions. As a non soldier, it did look odd.
Why would a soldier, themselves decide to run down a mountain, out in the open, while people are firing at them? Gets, shot, then throws away his rifle, now forces the rest of the team to take more risks to rescue him?
