Politics › Nigeria Loses As US Oil Attracts More Buyers by ijustdey(op): 7:41am On Mar 30, 2017 |
Femi Asu
Nigeria has lost some of its market share in Europe, its biggest regional market, as crude oil exports from the United States penetrate more destinations.
The US had in December 2015 removed the 40- year -old restrictions on its crude exports following the rapid growth of its oil production from 2013 to 2015.
The US Energy Information Administration said on Tuesday that the country exported crude oil to 26 different countries in 2016, compared with 10 countries the previous year.
Among the countries were buyers of Nigeria crude including Netherlands, China, Italy, the United Kingdom, Colombia, Singapore, Peru, France and Spain.
The US crude oil exports averaged 520,000 barrels per day in 2016, 55, 000 bpd or 12 per cent above the 2015 level, despite a year -over - year decline in domestic crude oil production, the EIA said.
According to the agency, in 2015, 92 per cent of the US crude oil exports went to Canada, which was exempt from the US crude oil export restrictions. After restrictions were lifted , Canada remained the top destination but received only 58 per cent of the US crude exports in 2016.
The EIA said, “ Aside from Canada, European destinations such as the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, and France rank high on the list of the US crude oil export destinations.
“ The second - largest regional destination is Asia, including China, Korea, Singapore, and Japan. In 2016, the United States exported to eight different Central and South American destinations, including Curacao, Colombia, and Peru. ”
The Netherlands , which is one of the biggest European buyers of Nigerian crude , received 38, 000 bpd of the US crude oil in 2016, making it the second -largest destination after Canada.
The country’ s monthly import of Nigerian crude oil plunged to an average of 3.7 million barrels last year , up from 9.1 million barrels in 2015, data from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation showed.
Italy bought 23, 000 bpd of the US crude oil; China imported 22, 000 bpd, while the UK and Colombia purchased 17, 000 bpd and 9,000bpd, respectively.
Singapore received 11, 000 bpd of the US crude oil; Peru, 7,000 bpd; France, 7,000 and Spain bought 4, 000 bpd, the EIA data indicated.
Spain saw its monthly import of Nigerian crude fall to an average of 4.7 million barrels in 2016 from 6.1 million barrels, while that of France averaged 3. 4 million barrels compared to 4.1 million barrels in 2015, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’ s data showed.
According to the EIA, several factors appear to have contributed to the rise in the US crude oil exports in 2016.
It said increased crude oil imports in 2016 substituted for some domestic crude oil at the US refineries, allowing higher exports despite lower US production and increased refinery runs.
Low tanker rates for most of 2016 helped to narrow the price spread needed to allow for an economically attractive trade between the US and overseas markets.
“With the average daily volume of crude imports more than 12 times the average daily volume of crude exports, many tankers were available for ‘back -haul’ voyages at rates significantly below regular tanker rates, likely further reducing the cost of reaching export markets, ” the EIA said.
Meanwhile, Nigeria's crude oil exports are set to rise to 1.66 million bpd in May, according to a loading programme compiled by Reuters on Tuesday.
The country’s crude oil programme for the month is up from April ’ s revised loadings and puts Nigeria just above Angola’s planned exports of 1.61 million bpd in May.
While Nigeria had consistently been Africa ’ s largest oil exporter, its loadings have fallen below those of Angola several times over the past year as it dealt with militant attacks on oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta.
The increase to 54 May cargoes from 52 in April, or 1.61 million bpd, came in part from rising exports of Bonga and Antan, both of which were hit earlier in the year for scheduled maintenance. http://punchng.com/nigeria-loses-as-us-oil-attracts-more-buyers/ |

Crime › Police Arrests Dismissed Officer Who Killed Colleague In Osun by ijustdey(op): 2:05pm On Mar 29, 2017 |
POLICE ARRESTS DISMISSED OFFICER WHO KILLED COLLEAGUE IN OSUN BUT RESUMED DUTY IN LAGOS CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
The arrest of a dismissed police Inspector who allegedly shot and killed his colleague in Osun State while they were both on duty and ran to Lagos to resume duty has really exposed the structural defect in the police force.
The officer (name withheld) was arrested by the Area Commander Idimu, ACP Austines Akika after he had operated for three years without detection until recently.
After his interrogation, it was discovered that he had been operating illegally in the command, extorting money and creating bad image to the police.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the officer shot his colleague after they had disagreement while on duty in Osun State and he managed to escape murder trial and was dismissed from the Force three years ago.
He did not mind the dismissal but all he did was to change location and came to Lagos with fake signal from Police Headquarters in Abuja and resumed duty at Igando division under Area M Command.
However, luck ran out on him when one of the transferred officer who knew he was dismissed informed the authority who ordered his arrest and taken to the state Command.
It was gathered that during investigation he insisted he was not dismissed but only transferred to Lagos only to be discovered that he forged the signal papers.
He was subsequently detained from where he was reportedly charged to court.
When P.M .EXPRESS visited Area M Command, Akika was not around to comment on the matter.
However police sources confirmed the arrest. http://pmexpressng.com/police-arrests-dismissed-officer-killed-colleague-osun-resumed-duty-lagos/lalasticlala |
Politics › Reps To Replace Dead Candidates With Running Mates by ijustdey(op): 9:27am On Mar 29, 2017 |
The House of Representatives yesterday passed for second reading a bill that seeks to amend the Electoral Act to replace dead presidential or governorship candidate with their running mate.
The bill, sponsored by Reps Sunday Karimi (PDP, Kogi) and Eucharia Azodo (PDP, Anambra) also seeks to further amend the Electoral Act to empower the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize voting by Nigerians in the Diaspora.
Leading debate on the bill, Rep Karimi said the Act currently does not take care of situation where a candidate dies, which was what led to the controversy in Kogi State in 2015 when the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Abubakar Audu died while the election was inconclusive.
He said “the Act is silent about changing of candidates during an ongoing election, although, going by the spirit of Section 33, the Electoral Act 2010 prohibits changing/substitution of candidates during an ongoing election.”
He therefore proposed that “should a flag bearer of a party for a presidential or gubernatorial election dies during the election, the running mate who holds a joint ticket with his superior automatically steps into his shoes so that the said election can be concluded without delay,” he said.
On her part, Rep Azodo proposed additional Sections 118 and 119 to allow Diaspora voting and the method with which it could be done.
Speaker Yakubu Dogara referred the bill to the committees on electoral matters and justice after its second reading. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/reps-to-replace-dead-candidates-with-running-mates/191178.htmllalasticlala |
Politics › Senate’s SUV Scam: Absence Of Customs Stalls Probe by ijustdey(op): 7:58am On Mar 29, 2017 |
We didn’t buy car for N298m, says spokesman The investigation of the Senate into alleged purchase of an SUV Range Rover with fake documents by the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, was stalled yesterday.
That was as a result of the failure of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, to appear before the Senate committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions investigating the matter. Chairman of the committee, Sam Anyanwu, had on Monday announced that the Customs would make presentation to defend the allegation that the Senate President bought the vehicle with fake papers. But the Customs failed to appear before the Committee as proposed, as Anyanwu said that his committee waited for the agency but they failed to show up.
He said the committee might proceed to compile its report and submit to Senate while stating however, that the committee would meet to take appropriate decision on the next step to take.
Meanwhile, the Senate, yesterday, described as false reports alleging that it purchased the controversial bullet proof SUV Range Rover at the cost of N298m. Spokesman of the Senate, Senator Aliyu Sabi, at a media briefing yesterday, described the report on the price of the vehicle as false and mischievous, saying that the actual cost of the vehicle was N62.5m.
He said:”The reports in the media about the price of the vehicle which the Senate was said to have bought as part of its convoy but was later abandoned when it got impounded by the Customs over controversy surrounding import duty payment is false and mischievous.
“The correct price of the vehicle when it was imported in 2015 is $298,000 which at the prevailing rate of N165 to a dollar is about N49, 170.
“The Senate paid N62.5m for the vehicle in November 2015. This is contrary to the mischief by those who decided to turn the $298,000 to N298m as the price of the vehicle.
For the avoidance of doubt, the price of that vehicle is N62.5m and not N298m.” He further stated that Senate would appreciate it if all reports relating to the legislative institution, particularly on the vehicle matter, were reported with accuracy and all facts put in proper perspective. “We urge journalists to avoid sensationalism.
The Senate is a responsible institution and those who believe that when they have issues to explain before it, the next thing to do is to resort to falsehood, blackmail, muckraking and mud-slinging, should know that they are just overheating the polity and undermining our democratic institution,” Sabi added.
The Senate, he said, “wishes to reiterate its total commitment to upholding the rule of law and to work for Nigerians, in accordance with the constitution.” https://newtelegraphonline.com/news/senates-suv-scam-absence-customs-stalls-probe/lalasticlala |

A 17-year - old Boko Haram suspect said he was forced to kill 13 people in Chikingudu forest in Kalabalge Local Government Area of Borno when he was held captive for three years by the insurgents.
The suspect was arrested by men of the Borno Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp after he was sent on a mission by his Commander to spy on Maiduguri.
He said in Maiduguri that he was sent by the terrorists to assess the situation in Baga Road, Monday market and Customs market in Maiduguri, and report back.
He said, “I was kidnapped in Marte by the insurgents when they stormed the town in 2013 and they took us away to Chikungudu forest in Kalabalge local government area.
“ I was held captive for three years at Chikungudu . During those three years, I killed 13 people in separate locations.
“ First was at Chikungudu where we were held hostage by the Boko Haram. They forced us to kill people , especially when they returned from a mission.
“They said they were testing us and, therefore brought some people and asked me to kill five people.
“ I initially declined but they threatened to kill me, so I had no option but to kill them."
He said the insurgents later came with three other people and forced him to kill them.
He said, “ The second time was at a village called Burssari, they also brought five people and ask me to kill them, which I did.
“ I spent three years with the insurgents in Chikunguda and Kalabalge. Life for us was indeed terrible. We were trained to dismantle and repair AK 47 rifles . ”
He also said that more than 500 children of his age and others who were senior to him, were initiated as child soldiers in the Chukungudu forest by the insurgents.
The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the state, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the suspect was arrested near the Bakassi IDPs camp, Maiduguri, by men of the command.

He cited the rejection of Ibrahim Magu as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as one of the unpleasant developments hatched by the PDP lawmakers.

Health › Nine Foods To Avoid If You’re Having Sex Tonight by ijustdey(op): 9:05pm On Mar 27, 2017 |
Yes, it’ s Monday, truly; and you probably had enough of your partner over the weekend.
However, you may still be raving to go this evening , if only to convince yourself that office politics or no office politics, life goes on !
So , if you plan to hit the sheets later tonight, there are some foods to avoid. This is because if you eat the wrong meal, you could end up with embarrassment, while you could feel fatigued and not exactly in the mood to get it on.
According to registered dietitian, Lauren Harris- Pincus, certain foods contain ingredients that could make you gassy , cause some stomach discomfort, and even kill the libido. You sure don’t want any of these ! So, here’s a list of foods to avoid before sex …
Beans: “Beans are known as the ‘musical fruit ’ because of their oligosaccharides , which we cannot digest in the stomach and small intestines, ” says Pincus. “ If you are prone to gassiness, don’t eat bean before approaching your partner for sex. ”
Onions: Although they’re a tasty and healthy food , onions can cause bad breath because of its smelly sulfur compounds which linger in the mouth and become absorbed in the bloodstream, according to WebMD. So , avoid onions before sex.
Garlic : Garlicky meal can be unbearable , says Pincus. In addition to bad breath, garlic can also cause stomach aches, as some people are sensitive to fructants, a compound found in the food. So , keep off it, at least for tonight.
Cruciferous vegetables: Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower , Brussels sprouts, and cabbage are all healthy choices, but like beans , they are very likely to cause some gas and bloating. “ They not only cause more gas , but stinky gas , thanks to the sulfur, ” says Pincus.
Coffee: Sure , coffee is great for increased energy , but it also messes with your blood sugar levels , which could end up messing with your adrenal glands, experts at online portal , Prevention, say . This could increase stress hormone , cortisol; and in turn could affect your testosterone , resulting in a drop of sexual desire and response. Again , coffee could cause an upset stomach. Sugar- free sweets: Sugar - free sweets might seem healthy , but they contain sorbitol , a sugar substitute that can leave you feeling nasty. “Many people experience unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects after consuming too much sorbitol, ” says Pincus.
Red meat: Eating red meat before sex could lead to blasting foul -smelling gas . Meats such as pork and beef contain methionine , an amino acid with sulfur that can leave you with smelly fart, notes the online portal , Thrillist.
Soda water: No one likes to feel bloated when they’ ve got a night out ; but soda water can cause just that! Drinking carbonated water can lead to a build- up of air in the stomach, which could leave you with uncontrollable belching , bloating, and abdominal discomfort, according to Livestrong.
French fries: French fries are high in sodium, which could lead to some uncomfortable bloating. They ’ re also high on the glycaemic index and are difficult to digest , which could leave you feeling tired and low on energy , experts at Livestrong say .
The bottom line: Everyone’ s body reacts differently, so , figure out what works best for you ! http://punchng.com/nine-foods-to-avoid-if-youre-having-sex-tonight/lalasticlala |

Crime › Robbers Attack Worshippers In Ondo Churches, Share Loot In Church by ijustdey(op): 3:49pm On Mar 27, 2017 |
Peter Dada , Akure
Armed robbers on Saturday morning invaded some churches in Akure , the Ondo State capital and robbed members of the churches of their valuables and the churches’ offering worth millions of naira.
The churches affected , according to a source, were located at Ondo Road and Fanibi areas of Akure.
The robbers reportedly spent several hours carrying out the operations without any interruption. They were also alleged to have shared their stolen items in one of the churches robbed.
It was gathered that as the robbery was ongoing, some members of the church managed to call the control room of the Ondo State Police Command but there was no response from the command.
According to a source, the incident happened during the end of the month’ s prayer and vigil services of the churches.
The hoodlums were said to have carried out the act between 2am and 4am on Saturday.
One of the victims of the robbery, on condition of anonymity told our correspondent that four members of the robbery gang attacked them in their church and stole all they had , including the church offering.
She disclosed that the hoodlums had robbed about five churches before they showed up in her church.
She said the four robbers that entered her church were armed with guns, machetes, iron rod and wood, adding that they beat ‘uncooperative’ victims ruthlessly.
She said, “ After finishing our vigil at about 3am on Saturday, all of us were going home when some armed men met us on the road. They told us they were members of the vigilance group in the area and they asked us to go back to the church.
“They followed us to the church, on entering the church with us, they closed and lock the door from inside. One of them brought out a pistol and asked all of us to lie down and face the ground. They collected everything on us, especially our phones and money.
“ As we faced down, we heard them sharing the money they had stolen from other churches they had robbed earlier. From their conversation , we discovered that they must have attacked no fewer than four churches before us . ”
The victim added that the robbers fled through the window when they heard that policemen were around the area. She said they removed the sim cards from their phones and dropped them on the chair of the church before fleeing.
It was gathered that 15 minutes after the departure of the bandits, men of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad arrived the area. No arrest had been made by the police as of the time of this report.
The men of the SARS were said to have recovered a gun and a mobile telephone dropped by the robbers at the scene of the incident.
When contacted , the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident and said the command had commenced investigation into it.
“ We have take action on the incident, we have deployed our surveillance in that area and very soon we shall arrest the hoodlums. ” Joseph said. http://punchng.com/robbers-rob-worshippers-share-loot-in-church/

Politics › Former Nigerian Official Admits Giving Lawmakers N50 Million ‘gratification’ by ijustdey(op): 10:11pm On Mar 21, 2017 |
Benjamin Ogunbodede, a professor and former director of Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, has said that he gave N50 million to some members of the National Assembly.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the embattled former director is standing trial before a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan over alleged N177 million hazard allowance fraud.
Testifying before Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel, Mr. Ogunbodede named one Gbenga Makanjuola, the then house committee chairman on agriculture, as one of the recipients of the N50 million gratifications.
Mr. Makanjuola could not be immediately reached.
The former director, standing trial with two others, however, refused to mention names of other members of the committee, Senate members and officials of the Ministry of Finance who received the N50 million gratifications.
Mr. Ogunbodede stated that the sum served as a thank you gesture to the NASS members and others who facilitated the quick release of N606 million, which was the school’s grant from the Federal Government.
“Makanjuola was one of the House of Representative members from the South-West on the committee who was paid the gratification,” the ex-director said.
He further confessed that the school did not actually raise fund from philanthropists contrary to his earlier testimony in court.
Tendering the earlier statement which Mr. Ogunbodede had made before the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, counsel to EFCC, contended that the witness lied when he told the court that he raised money from the friends to execute some projects in the school.
The court also admitted in evidence many documents by various panels of inquiry that had indicted Mr. Ogunbodede.
However, Tunde Olupona, the defense counsel, opposed some of the submissions made by the prosecution.
Justice Ayo-Emmanuel adjourned the matter till April 7 for continuation of trial.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Mr. Ogunbodede, Zachius Tejumola and Clement Adenose have since 2014 been standing trial on multiple charges bordering conspiracy, forgery, conversion and stealing N177,571,609 million.
The amount was meant to pay hazard allowances of workers of the institution.
NAN reports that one other accused and his nine companies, earlier arraigned with Mr. Ogunbodede, in 2016 entered into a plea bargain and were indicted and consequently convicted.
The fourth accused, Jalekun Omitowoju, a contractor, and his companies, were allegedly conduits through which the former director embezzled the money. Entertainment › Lagos Bans Live Band At Beer Parlours, Restaurants by ijustdey(op): 10:42am On Mar 21, 2017 |
Govt: Religious leaders must soundproof churches, mosques Lagos State government has prohibited live band music at various beer parlours and restaurants. The government also told religious leaders to soundproof worship centres to minimise the effect of noise generated on the residents.
The General Manager, Lagos State Environment Protection Agency (LASEPA), Adebola Shabi (an engineer), who disclosed this to our correspondent, said the decision came on the heels of increasing rate of petitions by residents lamenting the disturbance from the beer parlour, club houses and religious houses. Shabi said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was poised to develop Lagos. The LASEPA decried the rate at which residential areas were being converted to commercial use without government’s approval.
He also blamed the residents for not informing government when those structures were being converted. Shabi said some of the structures were located in places without the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which would enable government plan for the area or possibly prevent the project from being developed in the area.
The GM also warned that beer parlours and restaurants which violated the directive would be penalised. He said: “Any complaint from the residents henceforth will attract sanction.
They must obtain permit to do so and failure to obtain permit, the fine is N500,000. We must discourage needless noise making at our residents. “In the 60s and 70s we had night life but you can see that Governor Ambode is working to bring back night life. Government is spending a lot in assisting the police.
“Let me also use this medium to inform the Baales and other community leaders and residents to inform the police and government on strange development in their areas. A lot of development takes place unknown to government because people in the area refuse to inform the government and this is why residential areas are converted to industrial areas. EIA is essential in any development and the community must be carried along in doing it.”
The LASEPA GM also condemned the practice of parking vehicles on the street for too long, saying residents must also report such in order not to jeopardise efforts to boost security. Government had in the past sealed many churches, mosques, hotels and other business outfits because of noise pollution. http://newtelegraphonline.com/crime/metro/lagos-bans-live-band-beer-parlours-restaurants/
