Crime › 2 Nigerian Men Rob Portuguese Man, Strip Unclad And Filmed by ijustdey(op): 8:47pm On May 09, 2017
Man forced to take his clothes off, filmed in Dubai

The defendants pleaded not guilty in the Court of First Instance

Two Nigerians attacked a Portuguese man and forced him to take off his clothes to film him so as to threaten and blackmail him, a Dubai court has heard.

The two defendants - both unemployed and aged 31 and 33 - brought the victim to their hotel room after "luring him with the photo of a beautiful woman online". They threatened to beat the victim up unless he took off his clothes and then filmed him against his will.

They then snatched his wallet and stole Dh2,500 from it. They also took his bank cards and used them to make purchases worth Dh7,000.

The defendants pleaded not guilty in the Court of First Instance to the charges of forcible theft, sexual assault, unlawful use of others' bank cards and assault on one's privacy with the use of technology.

The case dates back to February 18.

"An incident of assault and theft by force was reported at a hotel room. The complainant told us that when he arrived to the UAE he met a woman online and agreed to meet her at a hotel in Oud Metha.

However, when he reached there he found the door open and once in, a woman closed the door and two men attacked him," a police corporal said.

The complainant told the police that the defendants threatened to post his photos online if he did not hand over his wallet to them. One of the defendants went out and withdrew money from his account and came back. They told him to go inside the bathroom and wait. When he heard they were gone he went out and called the police.

The pair admitted to the investigators that they had booked the hotel room.

Family › Wife Seeks Dissolution Of 14-year Marriage Over Excessive Sex by ijustdey(op): 4:58pm On May 09, 2017
Peter Dada, Akure

One Foluke Ojo has approached a Magistrate Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, seeking dissolution of her marriage to Busuyi Ojo, saying she was tired of the union over alleged too much sex from her husband.

The couple who had been married for 14 years, both agreed to the dissolution.

Folake alleged that her husband was no more taking care of the family. She declared that she was no more in love with her husband , asking the court to grant her prayer.

The applicant alleged that Busuyi wanted to have sex with her all the time; and that anytime she refused to have sex with him, she would be beaten blue black by her husband.

She further alleged that after beating her, Busuyi would still go ahead and have sex with her.

She alleged, “ There was a day my husband beat me up, it was my mother that rescued me and took me to hospital . ”

In response, Busuyi denied all the allegations leveled against him by his wife; saying that Folake always disobeyed him and that she did not always behave like a responsible wife.

“She dressed like a prostitute, she can wear any cloth she likes, forgetting that she is a housewife, ” Busuyi alleged.

Expressing no more interest in the marriage, the husband urged the court to grant his wife's request of terminating the 14-year union.

Having heard from both sides, the president of the Magistrates’ Court, Mr . Ayodele Omotola, in his ruling, said there was an indication that the relationship had broken down, but he urged the parties to allow peace to reign.

The court president however ordered the respondent to pay a sum of N 5, 000 to the court for the food allowances of their children and then adjourned the case till May 10, 2017 ( today) for judgment.

Crime › Woman’s Decomposing Body Found In Abakiliki Apartment By Police by ijustdey(op): 5:01pm On May 08, 2017
The Police Command in Ebonyi has confirmed the discovery of the decomposing body of a woman in an apartment in Abakiliki.

The Spokesman of the command, DSP. Jude Madu, told NAN on Monday that the body of the woman was found in a room at No. 9c Igwe Ogbuofia St., Kpirikpiri Abakaliki at the weekend.

“I am still expecting more briefing from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Kipirikpiri Area and will disclose more facts after being briefed,” Madu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The decomposing body of the woman, identified as Miss Josephine Mba, 35, was found inside her single-room apartment by neighbours, with flies feasting on the body.

Mbah, who hailed from Amata, Akpoha in the Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi, was the Secretary of Great Minds Academy, a private school in Abakaliki.

A resident of the building where Mbah died, Mr James Okeh, said that many residents had fled, due to the stench oozing from the decomposing body of the woman.

“The dead woman does not relate with anybody in the compound as she always isolated herself from whatever concerns inhabitants of the building and the area.

“This makes it difficult to account for what happened to her as she remained indoors whenever she is around and does not toe recognizable paths while returning home from work.

“We call on relevant authorities to urgently evacuate the corpse to prevent an outbreak of disease and other environmental hazards in the area,” he said.

Rev. Ephraim Ononye, Chairman of Ebonyi Emergency Management Agency, however, assured residents of the area that the corpse would be evacuated immediately.

“The police need to conduct an autopsy to ascertain whether she committed suicide as her family will be involved in whatever actions that will be taken,” he said.

Politics › SGF: Ex-cpc Members Lobby For Tony Momoh, Galadima by ijustdey(op): 5:52pm On May 07, 2017
The Southern Mandate, a forum of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) members, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to either consider its former national chairman, Chief Tony Momoh or Eng. Buba Galadima as the next Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The forum, which has its membership in the 17 southern States, made the call in a statement issued and signed Sunday in Abuja by its national coordinator, Comrade Ikonomwan Francis.

The association said such decision from President Buhari would correct the wrong noted in the appointment he had made so far.

While asking Mr President to drop the embattled SGF to face prosecution from the anti-graft agency without delay, they said his replacement with either Momoh or Galadima would serve a thank-you message to those who delivered 12 million votes to him in 2011 on the platform of the defunct CPC.

Part of the statement read, “We wish to reiterate our earlier position that the key appointments Mr. President has made so far are occupied by strangers who do not share the same vision and mission of President Buhari for a better Nigeria. For instance, the suspend SGF Babachir Lawal, came from the blues to occupy the all important office of the SGF.

“Prince Momoh and Engr. Galadima are men of implacable character who are co-vision bearer with President Buhari. These men made a very strong foundation for him.

“We are aware that Engr. Galadima turned down three major juicy appointments from former President Olusegun Obasanjo. We also have it on record that former President Goodluck Jonathan offered him FCT ministerial appointment and a cash offer of N2billion to abandon Buhari’s project but blatantly refused the juicy offer.

“On the other hand, Prince Momoh is Buhari personified - who has sworn in many public fora that the day he will take bribe, thunder will strike him dead. It is mind blowing that these men are not in Buhari’s cabinet today.”

Politics › Borno CP In Hospital After Being Accidentally Elbowed By Colonel by ijustdey(op): 5:39pm On May 07, 2017
Damian Chukwu, Borno commissioner of police, has been hospitalised as a result of an eye injury he suffered when an army colonel attempted to salute Kashim Shettima, the state governor.

TheCable learned that the incident took place at the Borno government house.

Chukwu sustained serious eye injuries as a result of the impact of the colonel’s elbow.

The commissioner is presently at a Kaduna eye hospital where he has been receiving treatment for the past few days.

“Officers of the Borno police command were all in a sad mood following the incident,” a source said.

“The CP was close to the army colonel at the time he was to salute Governor Kashim Shettima. His elbow mistakenly hit the right eye of the CP and immediately his eye became swollen with blood.

“He was taken to a Kaduna hospital where he stayed for sometime to be treated. He has been in Kaduna for almost seven days now and he is now doing better.”

The source further noted that Chukwu “may be returning today”.

Victor Isuku, spokesperson of the state police command, could not be reached to confirm the incident or to give an update on Chukwu’s recovery.

Crime › NDLEA Nabs Two Grandmothers For Drug Trafficking At Lagos Airport (Pics) by ijustdey(op):
OFFICERS of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have foiled attempts by two grandmothers to unlawfully export narcotic drugs to New York, United States and Medina, Saudi Arabia.

The suspects allegedly ingested one hundred and eight (108) wraps of substances that tested positive for heroin and cocaine during outward screening of passengers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos.

The grandmothers blamed their involvement in drug trafficking on financial hardship.

According to the NDLEA, the preliminary investigation revealed that this was the first time a grandmother of 60 years will ingest a whopping eighty-three wraps of narcotics.
In addition, the second suspect was going to Saudi Arabia where drug trafficking attracts capital punishment.

Her timely arrest at the Lagos airport by the Nigerian anti-narcotics officers have saved her from the ordeals of painful and ignoble death in a foreign country.

NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba gave the names of the suspected drug traffickers as Adebayo Ebunoluwa Mercy, 60, found to have ingested eighty-three wraps of heroin weighing 1.105kg on her way to the United States and Amodu Ayisat Grace, 59, that ingested twenty-five (25) wraps of cocaine weighing 275 grammes on her way to Saudi Arabia.

According to Ahmadu, “Adebayo Ebunoluwa Mercy was arrested while boarding a Virgin Atlantic flight to New York while Amodu Ayisat Grace was caught trying to board an Ethiopian airline flight on her way to Medina, Saudi Arabia. The cases are under investigation”.

Adebayo Ebunoluwa who sells provision at Ikorodu, Lagos but hails from Kogi State, said that drug trafficking was an afterthought saying: “I am a divorcee selling provisions for survival. Things became rough and tough for me when I lost my capital due to family problems. It has been my dream to travel to the United States in search of greener pastures. My involvement in drug trafficking was an afterthought. My intention when I got my visa last year was to go and work to take care of my needs without being a burden to anyone.

Everything changed suddenly when I met an old friend at a party. They took care of my travel expenses and gave me three thousand dollars with a promise to assist me secure a job in the United States. It was few hours to my journey that they brought the drugs for me to swallow. They said that it was my contribution for the kindness and money spent on my trip but it turned out to be my biggest mistake”.

Amodu Ayisat Grace, born in Lagos State, told investigators that as a Muslim she was glad to travel to Saudi Arabia but her journey terminated at the NDLEA office saying: “I was happy when they offered to sponsor my trip to Saudi Arabia but I never knew it will end in my detention. I sell fufu (staple food from cassava) to take care of my four children as a widow and this has been very challenging. They enticed me with a visit to Saudi Arabia and a handsome reward and I fell for the trick. I only swallowed 25 wraps of the drug. Unfortunately I could not get to Saudi Arabia because of my arrest”.

Reacting, the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Colonel Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd) said it was shocking and shameful for grandmothers to be involved in drug trafficking.

“This move by drug cartels to recruit grandmothers as mules is very disturbing, shocking and shameful. The moral emptiness exhibited by the suspects must be condemned by all. A situation where grandmothers have become a bad influence on their children and grandchildren is highly regrettable” Abdallah declared.

Politics › Boko Haram Planning To Kidnap Expatriates, Warn US, UK by ijustdey(op): 2:56pm On May 06, 2017
Britain and the United States on Friday said Boko Haram was preparing to kidnap foreigners in remote northeast Nigeria , which is in the grip of a food crisis caused by the conflict.

The Foreign Office in London said it had received reports the Islamist militants were “actively planning” to seize foreign workers in the Bama local government area of Borno state.

Both said in travel advice that the affected area was “ along the Banki -Kumshe axis ” , which is near the border with Cameroon.

The US embassy in Abuja said in a message to its nationals that the report was “ credible ”.

Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands of women and children, including more than 200 schoolgirls from the Borno town of Chibok in 2014, which brought the conflict to world attention.

At least 20, 000 people have been killed since 2009. But abductions of foreigners have been rare.

There was a spate of kidnappings of foreign workers in the wider north from 2011 to 2013, claimed by a Boko Haram splinter group, Ansaru, which was more ideologically aligned to Al - Qaeda.

The leader of Ansaru, Khalid al- Barnawi, has been charged with the abduction and murder of foreign workers, among them an Italian, a Briton, a German, Greek, Lebanese and Syrians.

Most were engineers or construction workers.

International aid workers now account for the majority of foreign nationals in northeast Nigeria. Most are based in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the Lake Chad region require urgent food aid as a result of the conflict , which has made more than 2.6million people homeless and ravaged farmland.

AFP visited Banki with other international media two weeks ago.

Humanitarian agencies operating in the town include the World Food Programme , International Organization for Migration and other UN bodies.

Banki was liberated from Boko Haram in September 2015 and is currently home to some 32, 000 displaced people in a sprawling, overcrowded camp.

The surrounding area still suffers from frequent Boko Haram attacks on military convoys , as well as suicide bombings.

Fighters loyal to Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau , who were pushed out of their camps in the Sambisa Forest area last December , are believed to be responsible.

The kidnap warning and the threat to humanitarian operations underline the fragility of security in northeast Nigeria , despite claims from the government and military that Boko Haram is a spent force.

Politics › Niger Delta Militants Kill Six Nigerian Soldiers by ijustdey(op): 9:39pm On May 05, 2017
Posted by Ezekiel Idabor

At least six Nigerian soldiers have been killed in new military campaign against militants in the country’s restive Niger Delta oil hub, security officials said on Friday.

The southern swampland has been largely quiet since the start of the year because militants halted attacks against oil pipelines to give the government a chance to conduct peace talks.

But in a new confrontation, army and security forces moved on Sunday into the Ajakpa community in Ondo state, a region west of the Niger Delta, to hunt down militants involved in oil theft and kidnapping.

At least six soldiers were killed, as was the leader of a gang that had used the area as base to stage operations inside the Delta, military officials told a news conference in the oil town of Yenagoa. The operation has not yet finished.

“Following that successful operation, our troops carried out a raid operation to clear remnants of miscreants, militant camps, shrines and hideouts,” a military statement said.

But the Ijaw Youth Council, representing the biggest ethnic group in the region, said the army had laid siege to the community and harmed civilians.

“No one is allowed to come in or go out from the community as the water ways have been blocked by the military,” it said in a statement. “Women and children are dying on the hour of starvation and diseases; women are being raped and sexually harassed.”

The military rejected the allegations as propaganda, reports Reuters.

A similar operation in a different area had fuelled an insurgency before the government managed to calm down tensions by promising more development for the impoverished region, a key demand from residents.

Villagers, complaining of poverty, often give militants shelter in the Niger Delta’s hard-to-access creeks.

The damage from attacks on Nigeria’s oil industry has exacerbated a downturn in Africa’s largest economy, which slipped into recession in 2016 for the first time in 25 years, largely due to low oil prices.

Crime › Hypnotised Girl, 17, Gives Parents’ N90,000 To Fraudsters (photo) by ijustdey(op): 8:49pm On May 05, 2017
by Babatope Okeowo

Two men, Dupe Adewole (30) and Abiodun Oladimeji (21), have been arrested for allegedly hypnotising a 17-year-old girl and stealing her parents’ N90,000. Adewole and Oladimeji were arrested by men of the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The state NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Adeyinka Fasiu, who disclosed this yesterday while parading the suspects along with four others arrested for fraud and cultistism. According to him, the suspects have been terrorising Akure, the state capital. According to the commandant, Adewole and Oladimeji hypnotised a 17-year-old girl, Moturayo, and asked her to go and bring her parents’ money.

The commandant added that Adewole and Oladimeji also threatened their victim that if she told anybody she would run mad. In fear, the teenager went home to steal her parents’ N90,000 and gave it to the suspects.

Fasiu gave the names of other suspects as Akeem Oyewole (20), Oni Abiodun (33), Aron Sunday (20) and Anes John (28). Fasiu said Oyewole was arrested after he and members of his gang successfully duped a student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Omokehinde Idowu.

Idowu, according to him, was going to school when the fraudsters accosted him, took him to their hideout and collected his N58,000 school fee, Techno W3 phone and wallet which contained school ID card and voter’s card from him.

Fasiu said Oni Abiodun was arrested for buying Techno W3 phone which was collected from Idowu. He also said Sunday was arrested for cultism for attacking a fellow student with a machete during an inter-house sports competition.

The commandant disclosed that Sunday was caught with an axe and an arrow suspected to have been used to perpetrate the act. According to him, John was arrested for house breaking. Fasiu said all the suspects were still under investigation and would be charged to court immediately after thorough investigation.

He warned criminals in the state to relocate from the state otherwise the long arm of the law would soon catch up with them. The commandant also urged the good people of the state to give useful information about the criminal elements to the security agents in order to rid the state of all forms of criminality.

Politics › N200bn Unpaid Salaries: Federal Civil Servants Threaten Indefinite Strike by ijustdey(op): 11:28am On May 05, 2017
Fidelis Soriwei, Abuja

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike to protest the non- payment of their N 200bn promotion and salaries and death benefits.

The National Executive Council of the ASCSN, which took the decision during its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, also decided to picket the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office, which the workers believed were subverting the express directives of the President to release funds to pay several arrears owed them.

The decision of the NEC of the ASCSN was read to journalists by the Federal Capital Territory Secretary of the association , Mr . Ojemhenka Isaac.

He said the money approved by the National Assembly to pay the arrears was diverted to pay contractors for unknown projects.

The President of the ASCSN, Mr . Bala Kaigama, who doubles as the President of the Trade Union Congress, told journalists after the meeting that the ASCSN, an affiliate Union of the TUC, would collaborate with the NLC to carry out the planned industrial action.

He said , “ Yes, the picketing would be done and I will lead it because this thing has taken so long. The idea of the payment of arrears of promotions, death benefits, first 28 days, started as soon as the President was sworn in .”

Kaigama stated that the picketing of the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office would be followed by a strike, adding that the dates for actions would be worked out later.

According to him, the arrears, owed the workers, were not paid even when the President directed the Head of Service to work out the details with unions and to commence payment.

He explained that when submissions on the issue were made to the government, the government argued that there was no budgetary provision for the payment of the arrears.

Kaigama said, “ We wrote to Mr . President; he responded positively and then directed the Office of the Head of Service to sit with us and work out the details. The details were worked out through the MDAs and our representatives at the MDA level and submissions were made to the Office of the Head of Service.

“That was done, then the National Assembly approved a virement but a chunk of the money was earmarked for the settlement of part of these arrears. But today, the explanation they are giving us is that the virement approved by the National Assembly has lapsed; that it is only capital projects that it ( virement ) can accommodate, it cannot accommodate overhead.

“ In fact, except if the National Assembly intervenes now, there is a tendency that even this year ’s budget may not capture these issues. And that is why we have decided that enough is enough. We are going to picket where we know the problems are.

“ Mr President has directed; the delay we have now is between Finance and Budget.

So, if we picket these offices, somebody must come out to tell us the truth so that the whole world will know where the problem is; and on this we stand . ”

When asked if the NLC was involved in the planned action, he said, “ Of course, in fact I am even meeting with him ( NLC ’s President ) this afternoon to brief him on that and it is going to be a joint action with the NLC, be rest assured that the NLC would cooperate with us in this struggle. ’’

On the new Minimum Wage , Kaigama said the Federal Government and organised Labour would meet on the issues of the constitution of the tripartite committee and the palliatives to reduce the effect of the fuel price increase on Nigerians on May 9, 2017.

He stated that it was the expectation of organised Labour that the tripartite committee was set up by the end of the month if the government meant to do it.

Speaking also on the protest that rocked the May Day rally in Abuja, the TUC boss stated that the workers were hungry, pained and angry as they celebrated May Day without their salaries and on empty stomachs.

He stressed that the salaries of workers were not paid on the 25th of the month in violation of a subsisting Presidential directive.

CYRIACUS IZUEKWE

A Ghanaian, Jona Borty has become rendered stranded in Lagos after falling for the pranks of two Nigerian fake spiritualists who invited and defrauded him of N15 million.

P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the Ghanaian was promised of spiritual deliverance and prosperity thereafter by the two men Olamide Fatai, 35 and Safara Babatunde, 47, whom he met through the social media.

On arrival in Lagos, the victim was lodged at Regal Suite & Hotel in Ojo, Lagos by the suspects where they told him the spiritual deliverance will be conducted.

However, the whole arrangement turned out to be a scam after he paid the money demanded to the suspects who bolted away without delivering him as they promised.

The police then trailed the suspects and arrested two of them while others are said to be at large.

At the station, police source said the two suspects admitted that they indeed defrauded the victim but have equally shared the money.

They were charged before Ojo Magistrates’ court for obtaining and stealing under the Criminal Code.

The presiding Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The court ordered that one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler which must show evidence of means of livelihood.

They were remanded in prison custody pending when they will perfect their bail.

Politics › Governors To Dogara: Account For N1tr House Budget by ijustdey(op): 7:54am On May 05, 2017
From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has challenged the Speaker of the House of the Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, to come clean on how over three trillion naira that accrued to the House under his watch was spent.

The NGF in a statement issued by its Head, Media and Public Affairs, Abulrazque Barkindo, also told Dogara to account for another N115 billion annual budget.

It alleged that Dogara’s inept management has thown the Green Chamber into public ridicule and insisted that the era of using governors as punching bags to score cheap political points was over.

“Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara should know that the world has still not received a satisfactory explanation on how the National Assembly utilised over a trillion Naira of public resources through the years and its N115 billion annual budget has created its own monster in the hash tag (#OpenNASS).

“Moreover, Rt Hon Dogara should remove the log in his eyes before going for the speck in other people’s eyes. The poor leadership that he offers the House of Reps, if truth be told, has reduced the institution in the eye of the Nigerian people so much that even members of Dogara’s kitchen cabinet have come out to openly accuse him of corruption.

“The grievous allegations levelled against Dogara by his chosen and now suspended Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Dr. Abdulmumini Jibrin, are still hanging on Dogara’s neck. But mum is the word. Instead of providing answers, Rt Hon Dogara is busy depleting the hard-earned credibility of the House of Representatives from the cerebral height where his predecessor, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, now a governor, left it.”

The NGF Secretariat’s position is a reaction to “the incessant attacks on governors by the Speaker.”

It warned that the attacks on governors were overheating the polity and giving everyone cause for concern.

The NGF’s spokesman cited Dogora’s attack on Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, who he challenged to make public his salary and security votes, and the Bauchi State governor, Mohammed Abubakar Ibrahim, who Dogara accused of non-performance.

Barkindo wondered if the Speaker was oblivious of the giant steps being taken by the current set of governors to improve the quality of governance in the country and by implication the quality of life the governors were working assiduously to provide the Nigerian people.

“Of course, governors are human and can, therefore, not be adjudged to be all perfect.

But the governorship institution is an integral part of this democracy, just as the House of Representatives is, and if the Speaker continues in this path of disparaging governors he may ultimately endanger this same democratic process that brought him national prominence.”

The NGF spokesperson noted that at the last Governors Forum meeting held on April 17, governors agreed to sign into the Open Governance Partnership (OGP), agreement whose key indices included, but were not limited to fiscal transparency, anti-corruption, access to information and citizen engagement among several others.

“The OGP is an initiative of a former Managing Director of the World Bank which seeks to improve governance around the world, to which Nigeria has already become a signatory under the Muhammadu Buhari administration. Kaduna State has also signed and many more governors including Mohammed Abubakar Ibrahim are positively disposed to it. This, in summary means that the era of using governors as punching bags to score cheap political points is over.”
