The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said no fewer than 210, 000 Nigerians die of HIV/AIDS every year, saying Nigeria is the third largest population of people living with the disease in the World.

He said there was 21 per cent reduction of HIV/AIDS between 1997 and 2010, saying at the end of 2010 an estimate of 34 million cases was recorded.

Chukwu, who disclosed this at the weekend during this year’s commemoration of World AIDS Day held at Grand Arena Nkwegu Ugbala, Abakaliki, said there would be 90 per cent reduction in transmission of HIV/AIDS through the mother to child transmission (MTCT) by 2015 in line with UN declaration of 2009.

The minister, represented by Prof. Abudulsalami Nasidi, said Nigeria was making progress in the fight against the scourge.

He said N270 billion would be needed in the fight against HIV/AIDS between now and 2015, adding that 1.2 million AIDS patients in Nigeria needed treatment which he said would be through the use of retro-viral drugs.

The minister stated that the new rating of the HIV/AIDS would be announced next week while the North-Central geopolitical zone was still leading with 7.5 per cent followed by the South-South zone and South-East zone while the least was the North-West.

According to him, the challenges facing the fight against HIV/AIDS included inadequate funding, weak health system, dwindling external/donor support, poor engagement and coordination of the private sector, weak procurement and supply management system as well as gender inequality making female more vulnerable to HIV infection.

Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, represented by his Deputy, Chief Dave Umahi urged parents to expose their children/wards to sex education at early age.

He warned against discrimination and stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS, saying they were citizens of the Nigeria and should be embraced by others in the society.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Federal Teaching Hospital (FETHA) Abakaliki, Dr. Paul Ezeonu said the only solution to avoid the disease was total abstinence from premarital sex and other casual sex

Jos -The police in Plateau on Tuesday confirmed that multiple attacks were carried out on four communities in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state on Monday.

The report said many people were confirmed dead with several others injured in the attacks on the communities.

Mrs Felicia Anselem, the spokesperson of the command in Jos said that the attacks were carried at about 1 a.m.

“The attacks were carried out concurrently at four different locations at Rawuru, Tasu, Foron and Gurabok.

“There are many people dead and several others injured, but we cannot give the exact number of the casualties yet because our men are collating the figures,’’ Anselem said.

The spokesperson, however, said that the casualty figure would be publicised after collation.

Capt. Salisu Mustapha, the spokesperson of the Special Task Force (STF) in charge of security in Plateau also confirmed the attack.

Mustapha said the STF was still gathering the details of the incident and could not give the casualty figures.

“I will give the details of the incident as soon as we have them,’’ he said.

NAN reports that before the incidents, there were two other attacks in Barkin Ladi and Shendam local government areas in the last five days.

The police had said five people were killed in those attacks. (NAN)

D other time i was reading an article on someone whom ASUU strike motivated to project fame glory, although its a good thing but on the other hand, how many nigerians have enjoy same faith? D answer is very few! Instead ASUU strike has increased d rate of youth misbehaviour, prostitution e.t.c. One early in my compound, an elderly woman rushed out in tear and was shouting ASUU! ASUU!! ASUU!!! We all rushed out and asked her what ASUU did 2 her! She said : " ASUU don make oghenekaro go carry belle , if ASUU no dey strike, she for no dey see dat foolish boy wen dem dey call rukevwe". I wonder does it means dat ASUU is d cos of d above issue?? O'GOD SAVE OUR GENERATION! Comment any update on d strike here!

The operatives of the State Security Service (SSS), in Enugu have arrested a 35-year-old man, who allegedly goes duping people in church with a false testimony that he was a Boko Haram member but has converted to Christianity.

Enugu State Director of SSS, Mr. Victor Duru, who addressed newsmen in Enugu yesterday, said the suspect, Daniel, aka ‘Shuaibu Shehu Rabiu’ started the deception in 2001 at the Christ Apostolic Church, Durumi, Area 1 Abuja.

He was reported to have lied to the pastors of the church that he was a Muslim, who converted to Christianity and was able to attract their sympathy and subsequent financial assistance.

On the basis of this, the suspect was said to have visited several churches sharing his false testimony and making money out of it.

The churches so far visited by the suspect, include Four Square Gospel Church, Bodeja, Glory Tabernacle, Bodeja, and End Time Awareness Church aka Wonderland, Monia, Christ Apostolic Church, Ajibode, Ibadan, all in Oyo State.

Others are Royal Church, Awka and the Spoken Word Church, Awka, Anambra State.

The SSS director said before his arrest, the suspect claimed to have been invited as a guest speaker in a youth programme by a Church in Awka Anambra State .

The suspect was also said to have claimed that while on his way back to Yola, Adamawa State, on August 21, the commercial bus he boarded broke down at 9th Mile in Enugu State. He had told his victims that because the driver of the bus refused to refund them their fares, he was stranded and that he called his host, who could not come to his aid, hence, he had to proceed to the now-demolished Mountain of Fire and Miracle Church, to solicit for help.

The Director of SSS urged Nigerians to be wary of people going about sharing bogus testimonies especially if the intention was to seek help or get money.

The 35-year-old suspect, who insisted that he was a missionary, told newsmen that he was neither a Christian nor a Muslim and that he was never a member of Boko Haram.
