The president of Libya's Olympic committee, Nabil Elalem, is reported to have been abducted in Tripoli. According to eyewitness accounts, Mr Elalem was in his car with a colleague when two vehicles carrying armed men forced him to stop. A spokesman for Libya's Olympics commission told a Libyan TV channel that the men had claimed to be from the army and asked Mr Elalem "politely" to go with them. His colleague was left in the car. Mr Elalem's whereabouts remain unknown, and there has been no information yet about the identity of the alleged kidnappers. Libya's Sports and Youth Minister Fethi Tarbel told Reuters news agency: "We condemn this kind of action. Whoever did this are criminals. "This goes against the revolution, this brings us back to the Gaddafi culture... I don't know if he [Mr Elalem] had any issues with anyone." Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011, Libya's interim government has struggled to bring armed groups under control. Some former rebel fighters have refused to lay down their arms and often take the law into their own hands, detaining people and running makeshift jails in some parts of the country. Earlier this month, two Libyan journalists were kidnapped near the former Gaddafi stronghold of Bani Walid. And a militia in the town of Zintan is still holding Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the ousted leader who is wanted by the International Criminal Court. BBC |

A teenager has had his right arm bitten off by a 11ft (3.3m) alligator while swimming in a Florida river. Kaleb Langdale, 17, survived the encounter in the Caloosahatchee River and wildlife officials caught and killed the alligator responsible. Doctors at a Fort Myers hospital were unable to reattach his arm. Alligators are more active during the summer mating season, wildlife officials said, but they rarely bite humans. Since 1948, 224 people have suffered major alligator bites, including 22 fatalities, according to data released in 2011. Several large alligators are known to live in Lake Okeechobee, which feeds the river Mr Langdale was swimming in. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino said the reptile was eventually found to be 11ft long when it was captured and killed. Mr Langdale's friends said the teenager put his arm in between his body and the alligator when the animal "came straight at him". "It took his arm and him under," Matt Baker told local TV station WBBH. He reappeared quickly, said friend Gary Beck. "He was waving saying, 'Call the paramedics! My arm is gone!'" Mr Beck said. The brother of Gabriel Garcia Marquez says that the Colombian writer and winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature is suffering from dementia. Jaime Garcia Marquez told students at a lecture in the city of Cartagena that his brother, who is 85, phones him frequently to ask basic questions. "He has problems with his memory. Sometimes I cry because I feel like I'm losing him," he said. He says the author has stopped writing altogether. The BBC's Arturo Wallace in Colombia said there have been rumours about Mr Garcia Marquez' memory problems. Jaime Garcia Marquez, his younger brother, is the first family member to speak publicly about it. Invited to talk about his relationship with Gabo, as the writer is affectionately known in Colombia, Jaime said he could not hold back from talking about his illness anymore. "He is doing well physically, but he has been suffering from dementia for a long time," he said. "He still has the humour, joy and enthusiasm that he has always had." The 1967 masterpiece of magic realism, One Hundred Years of Solitude, begins with the story of a family unable to care for their senile grandfather. "It is a disease that runs in the family," said Jaime Garcia Marquez. Gabriel Garcia Marquez currently lives in Mexico and has not made many public appearances in recent years. His novels include Love in the Time of Cholera, Chronicle of a Death Foretold and the The General in His Labyrinth. He is best known for One Hundred Years of Solitude, which has sold more than 30 million copies and been translated into more than 30 languages. BBC |
