If you ask my opinion, I would take sides with the Islamic injunction about this story for two reasons:

1. That Sarah after all she suffered to have that child, she wouldn't have allowed Abraham to even attempt sacrificing Isaac for any reason but could frame up Ishmael for the sacrifice for fear of him being the beneficiary of Abraham's wealth after his death.

2. That Ishmael was actually Abraham's first son in spite of his purported illegitimacy.
