I think the product is probably a magnetic fuel filter that in the fuel tank or along the fuel lines.It attracts litle metal debris that might clog flow lines,am not too sure of it side effect because its not widely used.

So long the silencer or muffler is well tested and confirmed not to induce too much back pressure,i dont see how it can affect fuel consumption.May be increase in fuel consumption you referring to is the increment that normally follows when cars perform better due to enhanced and more spontaneous breathing of engine.

I meant to say if 'the check engine light doesn't come on'.Associated problems would be fuel delivery or other speed advances in distributor.

My guess is a slightly dented exhaust pipe or clogging along the emission the emission lines,especially if the check engine light does come on.Goodluck
