Africa Command has shifted surveillance aircraft from the search effort to other missions, said Benson, who could not say how many aircraft remain committed to the search for the missing girls, citing security concerns. Surveillance planes from other countries have picked up some of the flights that had been flown by U.S. spy planes, Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary recently told reporters. The U.S. spy planes have resumed missions elsewhere in Africa. The intensity of the search, with the addition of planes from allies, has not changed, he said. "We don't have any better idea today than we did before about where these girls are, but there's been no letup of the effort itself," Kirby said. Some areas have been thoroughly searched, according to a senior defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the mission. There's no reason to keep scarce U.S. spy planes there when they are needed elsewhere. The U.S. military has flown some of its most advanced spy planes, including the Global Hawk high-flying drone, in search of the girls, according to a senior defense official. "In the case of the support to the Nigerian search, we have not pulled ISR [intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance] from this effort prematurely because of competing requirements," Benson said in an e-mail to Military Times. He declined to specify whether drones or manned aircraft had been pulled off the search. The demand for surveillance is at a premium, he said. "As we work with our international partners, our support includes flying ISR as often as we can, but more so, ensuring we are in close coordination to complement each other's efforts. Our primary focus is assessment and coordination with the Nigerian Government." Boko Haram — which means "western education is a sin" — is an Islamic militant group in Nigeria. The group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, took responsibility for the mass abduction April 15 at the Chibok Government Girls Secondary School in northeast Nigeria. In May, first lady Michelle Obama expressed "outrage'' at the girls' abduction, which sparked similar condemnation across the globe and campaigns on social media calling for the girls' release. Boko Haram has threatened to sell the children into slavery. Contributing: Tom Vanden Brook, Kevin Johnson Does this signal anything? 'Cos I feel these girls can't be found "whole" again |
