NSCDC And A Convoluted Recruitment Process 1 hour ago
NSCDC
More than 17 months after the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) opened its recruitment portal on August 9, 2019, the final list of successful recruits is yet to be published. This is in spite of the fact that in excess of 1.4 million Nigerians had scrambled for the 5,000 job openings advertised by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The harrowing situation marks yet another testament to Nigeria’s acute unemployment debacle.
A total of 1, 477, 042 million applications were received through the Corps’ website at the close of submission on September 7, 2019. Sadly, of that number, the CDFIPB, a department under the Ministry of Interior, announced that only 10,000 applicants were to be recruited. The figure was, however, consistent with the annual intake for the corps in the past.
To make matters even more harrowing, the federal government rejected the 10,000 figure advertised and argued that it had provisions only for 5,000 new recruits. A figure it claimed was captured in the 2020 budget.
Even with that number, and also given that the Board had proceeded to screen and invite the successful candidates to a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) which was conducted on December 8, 2020 in the 36 States of the federation and FCT, the delay in releasing the shortlisted candidates still persists.
This newspaper is worried that the silence by the relevant authority is creating room for speculations that perhaps backdoor recruitment had already been carried out after subjecting these desperate Nigerian youths to undeserved pain and anguish.
samndaads While we are not unaware that political, traditional and business heavyweights with actual or perceived influence are fighting to reserve slots for their wards and other preferred candidates, we make bold to remind both the ministry of Interior and the new leadership of the Corps that long -term unemployment can have serious negative consequences for the individual, society and its economic system. People who are unemployed for a long-term period find it more difficult to be employed as time goes by.
Employment, without doubt, has an essential role to play in all societies. People often define themselves by the contributions they make in the society through their jobs and are frequently recognised by others through an assessment of what they do for a living. Beyond the economic angle to it, it has a psychological sphere that rubs off on the character of the individual and how he or she is perceived.
Unemployment, on the other hand, has largely been blamed for the intractable security challenges in Nigeria. This unwholesome scenario is compounded annually as close to 4.5 million youths are added to the labour market every year. Previous studies had focused on national job creation schemes as prospects for managing unemployment challenges. A lot more is needed to be done in this direction.
It is an undeniable truth that unemployment queues in the country have been growing exponentially. It is also true that few spaces that are available cannot take up the huge number of graduates that the higher institutions are churning out yearly. The situation where about 1.4million persons applied for the 5,000 vacancies in the NSCDC dramatizes in a sad way the urgency of the moment as far as re-positioning the society and rebuilding it along the path of rectitude is concerned.
It is important not to forget that it is the aspiration of parents of young school leavers, at whatever level, that their wards get well paid and decent jobs after the completion of their studies and the mandatory National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) programme. Regrettably, the wish and expectation of many a parent and their wards in that regard are fast becoming nightmares.
While plans are on by the public and private sectors to lift this vale of uncertainty, this newspaper appeals to the corps to summon the courage to stick to its criteria for employment and disqualification, and ultimately make merit its watchword, at least given the security implications of its functions. We are afraid, though, that this might not be the case. We can only imagine the number of notes, personal visits and telephone calls to the agency’s leadership by very important personalities seeking preferential treatment for their own candidates.
This lacuna unwittingly created by the delay in concluding this recruitment process is beginning to present its own challenges as internet fraudsters are taking advantage of the delay to dupe unsuspecting applicants of their hard earned money with the promise of helping them secure appointment letters.
We are, therefore, compelled to appeal to the corps and its supervising council to expedite action on this recruitment process that has taken unnecessarily long time. Excellent |
Politics › Bill Seeking Life Pension For Enugu Ex-Governors & Their Deputies Sparks Outcry by Ina2k(op): 8:43am On Mar 15, 2021 |
Outcry over bill seeking life pension for Enugu ex-governors, deputiesRaphael Ede, Enugu There has been a public outcry against an executive bill before the Enugu State House of Assembly seeking life pension for ex-governors and their deputies.
Last Tuesday, the bill passed First Reading and there were indications the House might pass it into law as all the lawmakers were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Two non-governmental organisations, Daniel Ukwu Leadership Foundation and Save Enugu Initiative, in separate statements on Sunday, described the bill as anti-people. The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of DULF, Mr Daniel Ukwu, asked the lawmakers to stop the process of deliberating on it.
Ukwu said there were many pressing needs in the state, including payment of the minimum wage to staff of parastatals, primary school teachers, as well as local government workers, and wondered why anybody would come up with such a bill at this time.
The statement partly read, “The bill is not necessary. It should be thrown into the dustbin. People are dying of hunger whereas the bill is talking about life pension. This is not the time to talk about a bill trying to pamper governors and their deputies. The bill is very unnecessary and it is anti-human.”
Save Enugu Initiative said that the state would spend N1.153bn yearly on the proposed pensions and N1.250bn on vehicles every four years.
The group, in a statement signed by one Prof. Edeogu Nweze, stated, “Governors take home basic salary of N2.22m a month. This gives you N26,640,000 per year.
“Based on the bill, an ex-governor will be entitled to the following every year: Pension = N26,640,000; house maintenance allowance = 200% of annual basic salary. N26,640,00 x 2 =N53,280,000; vehicle maintenance allowance = 200% of annual basic salary, N26,640,00 x 2 =N53,280,000; medical allowance not exceeding N12,000,000; free medical care for him and his wife; adequate security. Let’s say N5,000,000; salaries of three staff @N100,000 each = 100,000 x 3 = N300,000 X 12 = N3,600,000. Total = N153,800,000. Then three vehicles every four years; let’s say each vehicle will cost N50,000,000 = N50,000,000 x 3 = N150,000,000.”
The group noted that there would soon be five ex-governors in Enugu: Jim Nwobodo, Okwy Nwodo, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, Sullivan Chime, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
“So, in a year, the state would spend 5 X N153,800,000 = N769,000,000 on five former governors alone. N384,500,000 on the former deputies. That is: N769 000 000 + N384 500 000 = N1,153,500,000 every year.”
Our correspondent reports that Enugu State paid last gratuities of civil servants in 2009 and partly 2010. The primary school teachers and local government retirees were paid last in 2005. https://punchng.com/outcry-over-bill-seeking-life-pension-for-enugu-ex-governors-deputies/

I have been in such condition as urs. Every guy have experienced such too at a point in every relationship.
Here is what you should do: 1. Try giving each other a bit of physical space, but maintain communication. Its a relationship not a marriage. U guys should try and miss each other, it always brings back that spark.
2. During these period, meet once in a while and do something u guys hv never done together. Something new. You as the guy should try and findout new activities to engage in. Or try doing some things differently but in an exciting manner, trust me it works.
Save your relationship coz the first stage of break-up is what ur experiencing now; no longer finding her interesting and gradually getting tired of her. U are the man, hold her before someone else does.

Health › NUT Cautions FG Against Jan 18 Schools’ Resumption Date by Ina2k(op): 11:08am On Jan 01, 2021 |
The Nigeria Union of Teachers on Thursday cautioned the Federal Government against the January 18 resumption date for schools across the country. The NUT Secretary-General, Dr Mike Ike-Ene, who stated this in an interview with one of our correspondents, said there was no need to hurriedly resume, if the rate of COVID-19 infection kept increasing. Ike-Ene stated that if coronavirus infection was increasing, teachers would stay at home. Recalled that the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had on December 17 said the country had entered COVID-19 second wave. On December 21, the PTF, at its press briefing, said the Federal Government had ordered all schools to remain shut until January 18 as part of the efforts to battle COVID-19 second wave. Ike-Ene in the interview with The PUNCH, explained that it was important to critically study the infection rate as schools awaited the January 18th resumption date given by the Federal Government. He stated, “I am someone who believes in life and it is when there is life that you can have a proposal. The number we are having shows that this (second wave) is more horrible. If the PTF and the NCDC (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control) are able to tell us about the new discoveries, then we can decide if we should stay at home or resume. “As for all the COVID-19 protocols, our teachers have been practising them in our schools. That was why WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination) was held. If they feel this one is more rapid in terms of new infections, it means that teachers will stay at home. “The Federal Government has said resumption is January 18. Let’s watch out, if by 18th (of January), it keeps increasing, then one will advise that the students should tarry. Let them remain at home. There is no point rushing and risking lives. “There is no point rushing, although our students have wasted time, I think our students; especially the undergraduates, are in a hurry to go back to school. If the number keeps increasing the way it is, it means we may take some few weeks to look at it properly.” He also advised that teachers and students should be the first set of people to be considered for the coronavirus vaccines when they arrive in the country. Ike-Ene said these people were vulnerable and it was important to protect them as they constituted the present and future of Nigeria. On his part, the National President of the Nigerian Medical Doctors, Prof Innocent Ujah, who said he was aware of a shortage of oxygen in hospitals, urged government to provide the gas in large quantity. https://punchng.com/rising-covid-19-cases-nut-cautions-fg-against-jan-18-schools-resumption-date/ |
Health › COVID-19: WHO Clears Biontech’s Vaccine For Emergency Use by Ina2k(op): 10:56am On Jan 01, 2021 |
To speed up access to COVID-19 vaccinations in the developing world, on the eve of the new year, the UN health agency approved Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine for emergency use. Regulatory experts convened by the World Health Organization (WHO) from around the world and UN agency’s own teams reviewed the data on the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and found on Thursday that it met WHO’s must-have criteria for safety and efficacy – with its benefits offsetting any potential risks. “This is a very positive step towards ensuring global access to COVID-19 vaccines,” said Dr. Mariângela Simão, WHO Assistant-Director General for Access to Medicines and Health Products.
