Just like every other day, residents of Adeoye
Estate, Power line Area, Aba Paanu in Iddo Local
Government Ibadan , Oyo State woke up
yesterday , Monday, morning to begin their
regular daily activities.
Ignorant of what loomed ahead until around nine
o clock in the morning, when a middle aged man
Musa Jato threw the neighborhood into a state
of despair, after chasing his own parent with a
machet catching up with the septuagenarian
father and then hacking him to death in broad
day light.
Musa Jato who hails from Kogi state, had been
living harmoniously with his aged parents until he
started behaving strange late on Sunday night,
thereby prompting the parents to desert their
home for safety .
The bereaved wife and mother of Musa while
narrating the incident to Radio Nigeria explained
that Musa had previously suffered mental
disorder and had also been treated for same.
Still in the shock and in the mood of mourning ,
family members and neighbours of the deceased
Abdullahi Jato , were still finding it hard to come
to terms with the manner with which he died.
Two of them described him as a peace loving
and religious man.
Sibling of Musa who noted that he was the only
son among them pointed out that there was
more to the situation.
The younger sister said it was quite an irony
because their late father had made several
efforts to ensure that Musa became well, while
stressing that the family now feared for the
safety of their mother.
A family member Suleiman Jose called on
government to help them provide necessary
health assistance to Musa noting that they had
committed all their resources on him.
In a reaction, Police Public Relation Officer Mr
Adekunle Ajisebutu who confirmed the incident
said the police had swung into action.
Meanwhile the remains of the deceased had
been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.

I think your friend is right,most of the languages are dialects of a major language ,although there are some very distinct languages that sound totally different from the major language it is said to be coined from

The article says about 510 languages. But I have a friend whose family is from Nigeria, and I discussed that with him, and he told me he thinks that what the article says is exaggerated because most of the languages there are probably just dialects of certain languages, similar to how Italian (one language) has dozens of dialects. Oftentimes even if different cultures have similar sounding languages that are mutually intelligible, they are considered serperate languages. Is he right or wrong? From my research, Nigeria has several major languages and a few dozen or so smaller languages smaller ethnic groups speak. But I could never find a full list of over half a thousand distinct languages.
