that is most likely the problem, and the dude did not get the authentication right, or did they?
the site was only sending you the error logs, will it send you a message if the dude has gotten in?

True talk *dhtml, there wouldn't have been an error log if the intruder had gotten in.

It's not possible for one to gain access to your database without the right authentication details however, if your site is a dynamic website like Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, DotnetNuke etc, it is possible for one to gain access if your software is not up to date and if you have a poor hosting account.

There are ways you can enhance your security like using .htaccess and so on. I'll advice you login to your hosting account and go through your log files to see from what geographic location the attempt was made. Try as much as possible to find out why the error log was triggered and, depending on how important the site is to you; if you have a poor hosting account, try upgrading it.

Prevention they say is better than cure.
