PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Electricity Gap: Where The Burden Falls by Internetsombody(op): 7:30am On May 19
The goal was not just to build dashboards, but to simplify complex electricity sector data into something decision-makers, businesses, and everyday Nigerians can understand.

Tool: MS Power BI

My background

I'm a Power BI Data Analyst with proficiency in using Power BI's Power Query, DAX, Data modeling capabilities to transform complex business data to uncover meaningful and actionable insights to support data-driven decision-making
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Electricity Gap: Where The Burden Falls by Internetsombody(op): 7:20am On May 19
METERING OPERATIONS

- The South West recorded the largest customer base and strongest metering performance.
- Ibadan had the largest customer base overall but less than half of customers were metered.
- Yola recorded the weakest metering rate at 15.5%.
- Millions of customers still depend on estimated billing.

Key recommendations
- Expand prepaid and smart meter rollout.
- Reduce dependence on estimated billing practices.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Electricity Gap: Where The Burden Falls by Internetsombody(op): 7:18am On May 19
ENERGY OPERATIONS

- DisCos received 197,960 GWh of electricity between 2017 and 2023.
- Only 154,512 GWh was successfully billed to customers, resulting in a billing efficiency of 78.1%.
- About 21.9% of energy was lost through technical and commercial inefficiencies.
- The data also shows that higher electricity offtake does not always result in stronger billing performance.

Key recommendations
- Upgrade aging distribution infrastructure.
- Improve transformer maintenance and feeder monitoring.
- Strengthen meter reading accuracy and billing systems.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Electricity Gap: Where The Burden Falls by Internetsombody(op): 7:17am On May 19
REVENUE & COLLECTIONS

- Nigerian DisCos billed about ₦6.6 trillion between 2017 and 2023 but collected only ₦4.5 trillion.
- About ₦2.1 trillion remained uncollected across the industry.
- Ikeja, Eko, and Abuja recorded the highest collection efficiencies, while Kaduna, Jos, and Yola recorded the weakest performance.
- The South West region generated nearly half of total electricity market revenue in Nigeria.

Key recommendations
- Improve digital payment adoption and customer payment systems.
- Reduce estimated billing disputes through mass metering.
- Improve energy accounting and operational transparency across DisCos.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Electricity Gap: Where The Burden Falls by Internetsombody(op): 7:15am On May 19
Here are some key findings from the reports.
OVERVIEW
- Nigeria’s average ATC&C loss stood at 46.8% between 2017 and 2023.
- Ikeja and Eko recorded the strongest operational performance with ATC&C losses of 23.6% and 27.0%, while Kaduna and Yola recorded the weakest performance above 70%.
- Total electricity customers stood at 12.12 million, but over 6.3 million customers still remained unmetered.
- Ikeja recorded the highest metering rate at 80.6%, followed by Port Harcourt, Eko, and Abuja.

Nigeria’s Electricity Gap and Where the Burden Falls

These reports clearly highlight Nigeria’s electricity gap and where the burden truly falls across electricity distribution companies, regions, and consumers.

Before I continue, let me quickly mention this.

Over the past few months, I’ve been building strong expertise in data analysis with Microsoft Power BI as part of the Power BI Data Analyst Program at Data Science Nigeria in partnership with Microsoft through the Elevate AI Developers Program.

Interestingly, my original plan was to focus mainly on Excel. But one thing led to another, and I found myself diving deep into Power BI, data storytelling, dashboard design, DAX, Power Query, and business intelligence reporting.

This capstone project became an opportunity to use data to understand one of Nigeria’s biggest economic and social challenges: electricity distribution.

Now back to the story.
Nigeria generates far less electricity than it actually needs, but one major question remains:

Is Nigeria’s electricity problem mainly a generation problem, a distribution problem, or both?

The data tells an interesting story.

My analysis focused on the operational performance of Nigerian Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) using publicly available NERC data from 2017 to 2023.

Why DisCos?
Because they sit at one of the most critical points in the electricity value chain. They are responsible for distributing electricity to homes and businesses, billing customers, collecting revenue, and managing energy losses.

The findings reveal that the electricity burden is not shared equally across regions or DisCos.

Some DisCos consistently perform better in billing efficiency, metering, revenue collection, and ATC&C loss reduction, while others struggle heavily with commercial losses, energy theft, poor metering coverage, and weak revenue recovery.

One important lesson from the analysis is this:
- Higher electricity supply alone does not automatically translate into better performance.
- Some DisCos receive large volumes of electricity but still fail to bill or recover enough revenue from it efficiently.

That means the problem is not only about generating electricity. Distribution efficiency, metering infrastructure, revenue assurance, and energy accountability also play a major role.

If I were presenting this dashboard to policymakers, the first visual I would lead with is the ATC&C Loss analysis by DisCo.

Why?
Because it combines technical loss, commercial loss, and collection inefficiency into one metric. It gives the clearest picture of operational performance and financial leakages across the sector.

The dashboard does not only show problems. It also highlights progress.

For example, Ikeja and Eko DisCos consistently recorded stronger billing efficiency, metering rates, collection efficiency, and lower ATC&C losses compared to several others. This shows that improvement is possible when operational systems are stronger.

A compound G on heating gives a cracking sound, reddish brown fumes H, a gas J which rekindle/relight a glowing splint and a residue K. The residue K is reddish brown when hot and yellow when cold
i) Identify G, H, J and K
ii) What is the name given to the cracking sound?

Please answer urgently needed. Thank you.
G = Lead Nitrate, Pb(NO3)2

H = Nitrogen (IV) Oxide gas, NO2

J = Oxygen gas, O2

K = Lead Oxide, PbO

The cracking sound is called Decrepitation

Equation of reaction;
2Pb(NO3)2 + heat ==> 2PbO + 4NO2 + O2
